YOUTH CHOIR Sunday, 11:30amYouth in grades 7-12 are welcome to join the fun and fellowship as Youth Choir prepares to sing for worship services and mission trips. Lunch is served before rehearsal begins.
NOTES OF ENCOURAGEMENTThroughout the month of May, please take a few moments to write some notes of encouragement for our Puerto Rico missionaries. Josh will collect them, take them with him, and give them to team members while on mission to keep their spirits up and let them know people at home are praying for them! There will be collection points at both worship spaces throughout the month. Notes of Encouragement should be written generically and not to specific team members.
Missions & MinistryWOMEN ON MISSION Tuesday, May 21We meet this Tuesday at 10:30am in the Chapel. The Knox County Association of Baptists CHRISTIAN WOMEN’S JOB CORPS, or of-tentimes called A HAND UP FOR WOMEN, is a ministry for women who have needs that the Job Corps strive to meet. Our guest speaker will be Barbara Golec. Suggested items to bring for the women are household cleaning items that food stamps do not cover
VBS SNACK REQUESTAdults who are not planning on participating in VBS have the opportunity to say thank you to all of the workers by providing a snack for them each day. There will be about 80 workers and snacks will be provided between 9:30 and 11:30am. Some suggested items are: fruit trays, veggies & dip, cookies, cupcakes, pretzels, potato chips, etc. A sign-up sheet will be in the Sunday School boxes. Thank you!

MIDDLE SCHOOL PAINTBALL TodayOur 6-8th graders will meet in the FLC at 1:30pm to go play paintball with leaders at Sir Goony’s. We will return around 5pm. Cost is $25/person. Simply bring money and a completed Sir Goony’s waiver with you on Sunday afternoon. The waiver can be picked up in the youth space or downloaded from our website.
BARTER THEATER IN ABINGDON Tuesday, May 21Let’s go see Shrek! Leave the Family Life Center at 9:45am and return around 6:30. Cost is $40 for the play and transportation. Bring money for lunch. Call the FLC (688-1206) for reservations.
END-OF-THE-YEAR COOKOUT Wednesday, May 22Our youth and their families will wrap up the year with a cookout! Join us in the Family Life Center at 6:30pm as we eat an awesome dinner and preview the summer activities together.
KENTUCKY SPLASH June 1Our youth will meet in the FLC at 10am to spend the day at Kentucky Splash! Invite your friends to be a part of the event. They only need to fill out a Youth Activities Waiver to travel with us. Cost is $20/person, which includes food and drinks for the day, and we will return at 5pm.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL June 10-13Join us each day 9:30am until noon. For children who turn three by August 15 through 5th grade. Register online at www.cbcfc.org/resources/events or call the church office. We are collecting paper towel and toilet paper tubes for crafts during VBS. Please bring them to the box outside the Sanctuary or in the FLC.
NIGHT AT THE PARK June 30We are headed back to the Smokies Stadium! We have reserved the Pioneer Porch for a church family picnic before the Smokies Game! As we continue to prepare for the Puerto Rico mission trip, let’s review a few facts about Puerto Rico.
From 1493 until 1898, Puerto Rico was a colony of Spain. At the end of the Spanish-American War, Spain ceded Puerto Rico to the United States. In 1900, Puerto Rico became an unorganized territory of the United States and was allowed to send one delegate (non-voting) to the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1917, the people of Puerto Rico were granted U.S. citizenship by an act of Congress. Puerto Rico became a self-governing commonwealth of the United States in 1952.
Puerto Ricans have consistently voted to remain part of the United States. In recent years, they have voted in favor of statehood, but the U.S. government has not acted on the request. Since 1917, Puerto Ricans have been subject to the U.S. military draft (whenever such a draft was in effect), and Puerto Ricans continue to volunteer in significant numbers for service in the U.S. military.
Hurricane Maria, a category 4 storm, struck Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017. Most of the country’s power and water infrastructure suffered heavy damage and over 3,000 citizens lost their lives. Recovery has come slowly, and even today many Puerto Ricans lack access to clean water, power, housing and other resources.
We are sending a team of volunteers to help our fellow citizens. Our mission team will work with Mission Serve in Puerto Rico to address humanitarian needs and to share the gospel in various ways. Continue to pray for and support the team in the days ahead.
