Join Good Shepherd’s Stephen Ministry team in providing Christian support to individuals in our congregation. Stephen Ministers provide their listening presence, prayer, and Christian caring to anyone going through a diffi cult time.
We will begin informational interviews in June. Training would start mid-Sept and conclude mid-March. Trainees need to attend 2 hour sessions, held weekly, usually on Tuesday nights.
For more information or to indicate your interest, contact Pastor Sheryl Erickson, [email protected]
FOOD RECEIVERS NEEDED
Good Shepherd’s Food Pantry receives deliveries every Tuesday morning from Second Harvest Food Bank. We need volunteers to receive these deliveries in June and/or October.
Deliveries arrive between 7:45am – 8:30am. The church offi ce calls you the day before with the time of delivery. Food Receivers need to be able to lift up to 40lbs. They place all delivered food in our pantry freezers or on our shelves.
Substitutes are available when needed. You can work as an individual or a team.
Contact Pastor Sheryl at [email protected] if you are interested.
GrowthChrist is Risen! He is Risen indeed!!Alleluia! Alleluia!
Easter blessings to you all, brothers and sisters. Good Shepherd continues to move into a new day in mission and ministry and I am grateful for all of your prayers, support, feedback and participation in the life of your church.
We learned in January that our church has been living beyond its means for many years. Good Shepherd’s leadership has undertaken many steps to bring our fi nances, structure, ministry and worship offerings in line with our actual budget and membership numbers. These changes have caused many to wonder about the future direction of Good Shepherd and, as I predicted at the annual meeting, made many of you angry and/or sad that these changes had to happen with little to no input from the wider congregation.
Good Shepherd’s Lent was truly a wilderness wandering.
I needed this Easter more than I have ever needed anything in my entire life. The experience of listening to the Gustavus Chapel Choir on Palm Sunday, being a part of the Maundy Thursday bread making and foot washing, the darkness and beauty of Good Friday, the amazing Easter Vigil with an adult baptism, Bhutanese youth dancing and singing, Sarah Iverson and John DeHaven’s music, culminating in the Easter “Alleluia! Alleluia!”… it all added up to a new birth for me. How has this Easter brought new life and light into your lives?
I am excited to watch new life, new ideas and new energy make itself known in our midst. As our committees begin their work, summer ministry and mission fi res up and we adjust to new realities in our life together please do remember to keep praying for your church! Also stay tuned as we fi nd ways to adjust our feedback mechanism so that the church committees can be the conduit for your ideas and responses moving forward. And don’t forget you can still go online to indicate your interest in participating in one of those committees!
Christ is Risen!Alleluia! Alleluia!

Recently when I was at the Madison airport gift shop I noticed a sweatshirt that said, “Drink Wisconsinably.” It seems Wisconsin is proud of its excessive drinking. A recent study published by 24/7 Wall Street that was conducted through UW Madison and the Robert Woods Foundation showed that 12 out of 20 of the drunkest cities in America are in Wisconsin. Madison, Wisconsin is ranked the 4th drunkest city on this list. In Madison, 25.5% of adults drink alcohol in excess and over a third of driving deaths were attributed to alcohol. The Center for Disease Control shows that alcohol is the fourth leading cause of preventable death and 88,000 people die each year from alcohol. UW Madison is often ranked as the number one binge drinking campus in America.
We have a problem with drinking. I do counseling with several clients who drink in excess but don’t see it as a problem because all their friends and family drink as much as they do. Alcohol is often a factor in marital problems and is a leading cause of divorce. If you or a loved one have concerns about drinking, now is a good time to address your concerns. I offer alcohol assessments to look at drinking habits and to determine if there is a problem, and if there is what the various treatment options are. To schedule an appointment, you can call the Samaritan Counseling Center at 608-663-0763 ext. 100 (for new clients) and tell them you would like to schedule with Dr. Dan Feaster for an alcohol assessment.
Rev. Dr. Dan Feaster is the Executive Director, a psychotherapist, and a certifi ed Alcohol and Drug Counselor at the Samaritan Counseling Center in Monona Wisconsin.

Adopt-a-School Snacks
Thank you to all who remembered snacks for theOrchard Ridge students during the busy Easter season. Thanks to your donations, we were able to deliver many bags and boxes of snacks to welcome the children back to school. We were greeted by one of the offi ce staff who was so thankful for your generosity. Rhonda Anderson’s grandson informed us that there are 30 some days of school left, so that means a continued need for snacks.Snacks like: pretzels, baby carrots, Cheez-its, graham crackers, fruit snacks. Rhonda has been the “other Church Snack Lady” since she joined the Adopt-a-School team this year.

Wigglers in WORSHIP
Church School fi nishes for the year on May 21. Now is the time to plan on including Summer worship as part of
each weekend.
Top 5 Reasons to Bring Your Wiggler to Church
1 – Wigglers will see the many parts of the body of Christ. It is important that Wigglers see many different people and ages coming together to worship God. Hopefully, they will recognize worship as something that happens at all life stages.
2– Wigglers will learn the rhythms of worship AND learn words to several songs and prayers. These rhythms and songs will help them be a part of worship services in many different places and stages later in life.
3- Wigglers have a natural interest in the people around them. Use this interest to widen your church friend circle. Older worshipers enjoy talking with young worshipers and have valuable stories to share with you and your Wiggler.
4- Wigglers fi nd serving fun! Wigglers make great greeters and, with guidance, ushers and coffee hosts. Who knows the best way to set up doughnut holes and lemonade than a Wiggler!
5 – Intentional habits set a foundation for your Wiggler. Proverbs 22:6 – set your Wiggler on a faith fi lled road and it is easier for them to continue to follow it as they are faced with different paths as they age.

Outreach and Hospitality in Light of the Empty Tomb
I’ve been overwhelmed by the response of people interested in the conversation surrounding outreach
and hospitality at Good Shepherd. In my fi rst six months as your pastor I’ve also been amazed by the outstanding reputation our church has in the community. As Easter people, what do the words
“He is Risen” mean for our many missions and ministries? In the Easter gospel from John we fi nd Mary Magdalene weeping at the empty tomb. She has seen the stone rolled away. She has seen the
linen wrappings lying on the ground. She has seen the angels sitting in the tomb where Jesus laid. Amidst
her grief and tears she is unable to recognize the risen Christ. This woman who is shown time and again as a pillar of faith, strength and love in our gospels, says
over and over, “they have taken away my Lord.”
Amidst the joy and excitement I have felt at both campuses this Easter season, I have also had
conversations that sound more like, “they have taken away my…” I know these are painful and very real
feelings. Just like Mary standing at the tomb and in the shadow of the cross. Her world has changed and the future seems uncertain. As a church community, we
know these feelings fi rst hand. But Jesus calls to Mary, and after she recognizes him, his fi rst words to her are
“do not hold on to me.”
Jesus was preparing the way and ascending to his father. In just a few short verses he will tell the
disciples, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” As Easter people we are sent out into the world. But with the joy of Easter, sometimes in our worship and ministry life as the church we much also experience a
few Good Friday moments. A preacher once described his church saying, “We are Easter people living in a
Good Friday world.”
As Easter people I am excited about the future of outreach and hospitality at Good Shepherd. It is a future where we will hold the strength of our
relationships on par with the strength of our bottom line. Outreach and hospitality fl ourish in the areas
where our relationships are strongest. If you expressed interest in outreach and hospitality expect a call soon from members of our task force to talk about where
you see Jesus sending us in the years to come! If you didn’t fi ll out a committee card but would like to talk
call me at the church or send me an email, [email protected].

Thank You for Supporting the Gustavus Adolphus Choir!
A very special thank you to all those who participated in housing, feeding, and welcoming the over 90 college-age youth and staff who presented special music during Palm Sunday weekend! The concert and worship were a resounding celebration of praise, and the faculty and choir were blessed by the warmth and hospitality they received while staying at Good Shepherd.
Good Shepherd String Ensemble Forming!A new instrumental group is starting at Good Shepherd! GS String Ensemble is looking for string players ranging from 5th grade and up. Musicians will be focusing on duets, trios and string ensemble pieces with a few solo pieces thrown into the mix. Our time together will be Christ-focused and includes group & solo performance as well as music theory, music history and going over basic musicianship skills. We plan to perform twice a year either during worship, in the lobby between services or in the Sanctuary during a concert. For more information and to sign up, please contact the group’s director Kristin Landis, [email protected].

DiscipleshipBeatitudes for Stewards of the Earth Blessed are they who reverence all created things as sacred; in God’s eyes all creation is good.Blessed are they who understand that creation is like a beautiful tapestry with every strand depending on all the others.Blessed are they who see the beauty of Earth as a refl ection of the beauty of God, who creates it.Blessed are they who do not waste or spoil Earth’s resources, which are for everyone, even those not yet born.Blessed are they who reverence the earth—the breath of God and the Spirit of life.Blessed are they who reverence for life-giving waters that sustain the Earth’s climate and nourish Earths inhabitants.Blessed are they who reverence the soil that supports our homes and our footsteps and yields abundant harvests.Blessed are they who reverence the trees and other plants that call down the rains, stabilize the soil, and freshen the air.Blessed are they who reduce what they consume, reuse what they can, and recycle what they can no longer use.Blessed are they who praise God the Creator in their reverent and gentle use of all things on Earth.

Children/Youth Church School Offering Update Many Thanks for Your Giving!
Thanks boys and girls for making this another good year for church school offerings. As of the fi rst of April the offerings for this year total $1,689.51!! For a second year the children’s offerings will be used to help feed God’s children here in Madison and Verona through the three food pantries our church supports – the Good Shepherd Food Pantry, the Allied Drive Food Pantry and the Badger Prairie Food Pantry AND in faraway countries where the Heifer International works to end world hunger and poverty by providing animals that both feed families and help to provide them with an income. One third of the children’s offerings stay at Good Shepherd to help pay for supplies and other expenses. In early May the children will again get to vote on which animals their offerings will purchase for Heifer International.
Please continue to support these organizations during the summer months by encouraging your child(ren) to bring their church school offerings when your family worships. Many thanks girls and boys (parents & grandparents) for your faithful and generous giving!
