Message Notes

newcovchurch.org/give

At the heart of why people believe or disbelieve in God, why people grow or decline in character, why God becomes more or less real to us— is our approach to life in all seasons. When we look to the Bible to understand this deep pattern, we see that the great theme of the Bible itself is how God brings fullness of joy not just despite hard seasons but through all seasons including the more difficult times, just as Jesus saved us not in spite of but because of what He endured on the cross.

Next Steps

Opportunities to Serve

@timsjohnsonkbj @newcovlincoln

Respond to the following:

How do you respond when hard seasons hit and it seems that God is “absent?”

How do you respond when others don’t understand your commitment to Jesus?

What steps do you take to resist giving up and losing hope when you are struggling?

In verse one of 1 Peter 1, Peter referred to himself as one who is called by Jesus, under the orders of Jesus. We are all driven and/or called by someone/something. Who/what is presently calling “the shots” in your life?

Do you worry about your eternal destination? Re-read verse four. How would being secure about your eternal destination change your outlook if you are in a hard season of life right now?

Do verses 6-7 sound like a “pipe dream” when it comes to the outlook we should have during hard seasons? When was the last time, if any, that those verses were true about a hard season you encountered?

That “pipe dream” can be a reality if faith in God is embraced. 1:8 Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and even though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy.The Hebrew background for the word “believe” refers to a person in a stable stance, their feet positioned so they could not be pushed over. It came to be used metaphorically for someone who was dependable, loyal, or trustworthy. The Greek equivalent is translated into English by the terms "faith," "believe," and "trust," “rely,” “hope.” Biblical faith/trust is not primarily something we do, but someone in whom we put our trust. It is God's trustworthiness, not ours, which is the focus. The focus is not on the abundance or intensity of human faith, but the object of that faith.

Re-read verses 8-9 which talk about the outcome of believing, trusting, relying, hoping and leaning on Christ.

Make time this week to contact a mature follower of Christ and share your responses to these Next Steps.
