BACK ON MARKET!

Dear Doreen, I saw an article advising sellers to price their home at the low

end of the market to spur a bidding war. What do you think of that idea?

—Considering LoweringDear lowering,

That’s happening in some areas. I currently am not seeing it here except on short sales. even then, the lender will hire its own broker to get a price opinion and the price will go to the market value. In the end, it’s up to you to set the price on your home. an agent can give you prices of comparable sales, and an overview of the market. If you decide to price at the very low end, be prepared for numerous showings and multiple offers. Be sure to hire a competent and experienced agent who knows how to handle this type of transaction.

The Wrong Kind of Article

I am not a parent of a child at BCHS,

but a resident who receives In&Out. Your article about the cheer was very inappropriate. If this

is going to become a gossip magazine please ask people if they would want such a thing. I have found your magazine very informative in the past, as a new resident of Arizona. This is the wrong kind of article.

Janean GillerAnthem

Coverage Missed Big Picture

My daughter participated in the BCHS Spiritline for the past four years.

Unfortunately, one incident by a handful of teenagers who made a bad choice, has tarnished the reputation of a wonderful organization.

Your article focused on one isolated incident. Nothing was mentioned… regarding the relentless dedication and perseverance of the team, the extraordinary leadership by the coaches, the support from the BCHS administration or the overwhelming support from the students.

This organization did many wonderful things for our community and it was a great experience for my daughter. One negative should not outweigh the many positives.

O V E R T H E P R I C K E F E N C E

By Chris [email protected]

I’ve spent much of the past 16 years trying to get my kids (and myself for that matter) to eat a

bit healthier. The conventional tricks found on well-meaning blogs and parenting sites are, frankly, useless when it comes to my kids. Maybe they’re too dumb or too smart, but even if a brussel sprout is wearing a celery top hat with an apple skin bowtie, it still tastes like a brussel sprout and my kid will spit it across the room faster than you can say “British food!”

HERE’S WHAT HAS WORKED FOR ME…1 Completely remove all junk from the

house. If they are hungry enough, they will eventually eat something good for them. Kale and lentils sounds pretty good when the only other thing in the cupboard is floor polish and wax paper.

2 Write “do not touch” on the food you want them to eat. This works amazingly well. A great variation of this is to write the name of one child on the food container. The other children will scarf it down in no time.

3 Hide healthy food in a treat. This is similar to the technique you use to get your dog to take a pill. Make a

fruit smoothie and throw a carrot in when they aren’t looking. Use this technique in moderation, though. Ranch dressing soup, with a couple greenies tossed in kind of defeats the purpose.

4 Bribery. Works brilliantly with my brood. Prepare a healthy meal and promise a trip for ice cream to members of the “clean plate club.” If they’re young enough, you can just drive around until they fall asleep, smear a little chocolate sauce on their clothing, and in the morning tell them they just forgot. If they still fall for this after the age of seven or so, you might want to see if they’ve been getting into the furniture polish. io

Still Rebuilding the VillageBy Karen [email protected]

Another monsoon season is almost upon us, but Anthem has not yet

finished clean-up from last July’s storm that dumped 5 inches of rain and tore through town with 70-mile-per-hour gusts.

And, if you own a condo at the Village, you’re probably sick of looking at the destroyed block wall at the west end of the property that fell victim to that storm. Count ‘em… nine months have elapsed since the wall came down, but other than some chain link safety fencing erected to keep people from falling over the edge, it appears little has changed at the site.

The approximately 50-foot portion of block wall and view fence that tumbled remain at the bottom of the wash, approximately 15 feet below street level. The damage seems to have affected about 140 linear feet of retaining wall.

When asked why the repairs have still not been completed, Village property manager Scott Ring, on behalf of the Board of Directors, told In&Out, “As the wall damage is still an ongoing claim with the insurance carrier, the Board of the Village at Anthem chooses not to make any comments regarding this matter at this time.” However, Ring did anticipate that if all goes as planned, repairs may be complete mid-June or the first part of July. io

The Village retaining wall remains damaged after a storm nearly one year ago.

Hooked Turtle Coming HomeBy Nadine [email protected]

The pregnant turtle found with a barbed hook in its mouth, and two

more in its stomach, has laid her eggs and is on the mend, according to Dr. Mike Kiedrowski, the veterinarian at Dove Valley Animal Hospital and turtle specialist.

“We sedated her, went down her esophagus where it enters her stomach and removed it,” said Kiedrowski. But the other hook is deep in her stomach and would require cutting the shell. Kiedrowski said since the second hook doesn’t interfere with the turtle’s daily functions, it’s better to leave it. “It will just rust away,” he said.

The turtle laid some 20 eggs which Dr. Kiedrowski will incubate at his home, where he has hatched hundreds of snakes and tortoises.

By the time you read this, the mother will have been returned to Dr. Kirstin

Young at Daisy Mountain Veterinary Hospital and let go in Anthem’s catch-and-release lake from which it came.

Two days before this update, we saw a man jump out of his vehicle on Anthem Way to rescue another turtle that had made its way to the middle of the busy road.

“They are migrating to the lake to lay their eggs,” said Kiedrowski. “It’s very common.” While not native, red-eared sliders are the most commonly found turtle, existing in almost every lake in Arizona, Kiedrowski said. They start as pets and, when they outgrow their domestic situation (or the owners outgrow the turtles), they are released into the wild where “they breed like flies,” Kiedrowski said.

The cost of the X-rays, surgery, incubation, transportation, etc. are borne by the veterinary organizations. “We bite the bullet and pay the bill,” Kiedrowski said. io
