ExCEL Awards Celebration

Our own Miles Payne was recognized this past Tuesday at the beautiful McNay Art Museum during the

Annual ExCEL Awards Ceremony. The ExCEL Award was created in 1999 to celebrate innovation in public

school education. Today, the purpose remains the same. Each year, one teacher from each area school

district is recognized for the most remarkable difference he or she is making in the classroom.

Together, SACU and KENS have recognized 304 of the finest educators in our community with awards

totaling upwards of $304,000.

We are extremely proud of Miles as our ExCEL Award winner and for the outstanding work she does with

our elementary students as the facilitator of the Success For All (SFA) Reading Program.

Ms. Kay’s 2nd grade class attended San Antonio Museum of Art to learn about Animals in Art. Our focus was on the Pre-Columbian Latin American art (we

learned that means it’s before Christopher Columbus discovered Latin America). Animals had certain significance for the people of that time. We first sketched animals we found in the exhibit then molded clay models of them to

take home.

Senior Spotlight: Sherman Paul By: Lexie Suglia, Senior

1. How many places have you lived before this? -4; San Angelo, Tx, Pensacola,Fl, Odenton, MD, Ramstein, Germany

2. How long have you been at Stacey? -I arrived during the middle of my eighth grade year, so a little over 4 years.

3. What has changed the most about the school since you have been here? -The school administration as we've had a new principal, academic dean, high school counselor, and registrar.

4. What extra-curricular activities have you been involved in? Which one was the most fun for you? -Basketball, Student Council, Student 2 Student, FCCLA, and Spanish Club. Basketball would have to be my favorite as it allowed me to grow as a young man and an athlete.

5. What is your favorite thing about being a senior here? -The support from all of the teachers as they go above and beyond to help you succeed in the future, if you give 100%.

6. Which teacher has had the biggest influence on you and why? -Mr. Fernandez, as he has always been there for me. When I struggled in Geometry, Algebra, or Pre-Calculus, he never hesitated to help me and he never turned me away.

7. What are your plans after you graduate? -My plans are to attend Prairie View A&M University and major in Human Performance with a minor in Psychology.

8. Looking back, what will you remember most about high school? -This is so hard because there are so many memories I will cherish. I will always remember coming into Ms. Detlefsen's office to get transcripts and recommendation letters at least three times a week. Spending a lot of my time in Ms. Cashion and Ms. Osburn's room working on scholarships. I am very thankful for all of their support during my hectic senior year. For without their guidance and support I don't think I could have achieved all that I did. In addition, going to the Student Council State Convention was exciting as I loved going to six flags. Also playing in the AT&T center during the basketball season and reaching the Sweet 16 during the playoffs. My teammates helped me succeed and I'm glad I had the privilege to play with them.

9. If you could start high school over, what activity would you participate in this time around? -If there was one thing I could participate in if I had to start over, it would be Academic UIL.

10. What advice do you have for next year's seniors? -Don't allow senioritis to come upon you. The easiest way to do this is to set a goal and follow it throughout the year. You've made it this far so don't give up now. If you wanted to give up you should have done it three years ago. Your parents, teachers, and families are proud of you. It will be hard, but think about the success you will achieve when you get that acceptance letter or walk across the stage for graduation. If there is no struggle, there is no process. If it was easy everyone would do it. You will reap what you sow, if you work hard you will achieve success.
