MALAWI MOMENTS Happy Mothers Day to the mothers of St. Brendan Parish and St. Joseph Namalaka, Malawi women and the Ho-
ly Spirit; Forces in Africa “One thing cannot be ignored when we speak of the African Church is that if the Holy
Spirit is the invisible force of the Church of Africa, women, without a doubt, are the tangible force. Women are
more numerous, have more courage, are more dynamic, more active and sometimes more competent. Without
women, our churches in Africa would be empty, both as a presence and as a force.” So said Fr. Donald Zagore,
of the Society of African Mission. “In the imagination of the cultural and political structure of African society it-
self, women, despite the vital force they represent, are continually relegated to the background. Male power
still imposes its legendary supremacy. Don’t you think it is about time to look further to involve women in the
Church’s leadership? “ the priest emphasized. “The Church of Africa would certainly gain a lot by opening her
arms to women. (source-FIDWS the Vatican’s mission news service.) For more mission news and resources,

Old Testament
THE ARK OF THE COVE-
NANT IS CAPTURED
1 Samuel 4: 4—5: 9
The Ark of the Covenant was a
heavily decorated box that con-
tained two very precious items—
the stone tablets on which were
written the Ten Command-
ments, and the stick that Aaron
the brother of Moses had car-
ried. This stick bloomed even
though it wasn’t still attached to
its tree. People who lived near
the Israelites had heard of the
Ark and thought it possessed
super powers. They wanted to
see it up close. So what do you
know? The Philistines actually
stole the Ark of the Covenant.
Because they knew nothing
about the one true God, stealing
the Ark brought them nothing
but trouble. Let’s see how they
gave it back.
New Testament
JESUS FEEDS
5,000 FAMILIES
Mark 6: 34-44
When Jesus was walking among
us on earth, people came from far
and near to hear him preach
about the Kingdom of God, and to
ask him to heal their sick family
members. Jesus was a great walk-
er, so in following him sometimes
people would find that they had
wandered far from home and were
very hungry. Jesus felt sorry for the
people. The disciples had an idea.
Why not dismiss the people and
send them into nearby villages to
buy food? But Jesus had a better
idea. He said, “You give them
something to eat.” All they could
find were five loaves of bread and
two fishes. Jesus took the loaves
and fishes, raised his eyes to
heaven, blessed the bread and
broke it, and then gave it to the
disciples for the people. Everyone
ate until they were full. The left-
overs filled 12 baskets. Jesus
had fed 5,000 men and their
families.
LEARNING ABOUT
OUR FAITH
How to Honor Your
Mother
This weekend we
celebrate Mother’s Day.
Famous mothers in the
Bible include Eve, Sa-
rah, Rebecca, Leah &
Rachel, and
King David’s great
grandmother Ruth. You
can honor your mother
by
1) waking up when you
are called,
2) doing your chores
with a smile,
3) thanking her for
helping you grow up
strong and healthy.
Alphabet Soup J is for Jeremiah, a great
prophet who came to Jeru-
salem with an unusual
message. He told the peo-
ple to make peace with
their enemies the Babyloni-
ans and be willing to go
into exile. We’ll find out
more about Babylon in Va-
cation Bible Camp.

ST. BRENDAN WOMENS BOOK CLUB The title of May’s book is a bit misleading—
Letters to a Young Catholic by George Weigel. It
should be called Letter to all Catholics in that
Weigel does a great job of looking at our pre-
sent day world situation through past events in
our Christian tradition. Come join in our dis-
cussion of this book Monday, May 28th at the
QFC Canyon Park Starbucks at 7:00 pm. We
are meeting there due to the Parish Office will
be closed for Memorial Day weekend. Ques-
tions? Call Berni at 425-485-4893 or Anneliese

ONLINE GIVING
Every person’s finances
and family situation is dif-
ferent. Jesus makes it
clear that it matters not
how much one gives, but
that it is planned, calculat-
ed, at least some-
what sacrificial (see Luke
24:1-4), and not simply
from what is “leftover” at
the end of the month. We
propose the tithe (10%) as
the ideal every family can
consider working to-
wards. This means taking
steps to give 5% to one’s
parish, and 5% to other
charities or causes you
have personal passion for.
You can register online at
