Chapter 1
Introduction
Overview maxSTATION Release 6.0.8 is a full install update to Release 6.0.7
intended to support existing customer upgrades to WINDOWS 7, and
include fixes (refer to Bugs Fixed Section) to previous 6.0.x Releases.
This release is a one-DVD installation disk. All prerequisites for the
installation of a maxSTATION are on this DVD. The installation
process guides the user through the installation. The maxTOOLS is
optionally installed, by enabling the check box on the installation type
display to Include Legacy support.
The DVD includes a folder that contains an installation file for Chinese
Fonts. This is not installed automatically, but is available for Chinese
Windows installations.
The release DVD also includes a folder that contains an installation file
for .Net 4.0. This should be automatically installed if not already on
the station, but some Chinese Windows laptops failed this installation.
This folder is included so that the .Net package can be manually
installed without going to the Internet to download files. In order to
fully use .Net on Chinese Windows, a Chinese language pack (not
included on the DVD) should also be installed.
This document contains highlights of the changes and new features in
this release. Descriptions of the bug fixes can be found in section Bugs
Fixed. There are other supporting documents that give additional
information about this release.
For full installation or upgrade instructions, refer to the Release 6.0.8
Installation Instructions (InstallationInstructions608.pdf).
Release 6.x requires a version 6.0 USB dongle.
Windows 7
Release 6.x runs only in a computer running Microsoft Windows 7.
Windows 7 64 bit Professional and above are supported by this release
of maxSTATION.
Release Overview
Valmet 1-2
As a result of the use of Windows 7, the maxSTATION should have at
least 4 GB of memory, due to the larger memory ‘footprint’ occupied
by the operating system.
Update details for all Release 6 versions are included below.
Release 6.0.8 Update Details
New DPU Security Access Configuration
This release adds support for configuration of Workstation read-only
access to specific Controllers within a Domain.
The following parts of the system are required to take advantage of this
new feature:
1. A DPU MR running at least version 6.1.1
2. A new Configuration tool in MCS\Setup called
DpuStationSecurity.
3. The new version of the DPU Security pop-up included with this
release.
4. The new version of maxDPUTOOLS included with this release
that downloads the security information to the controllers.
For more information about the DpuStationSecurity configuration tool,
please refer to Manual 278609 System Resource User’s Guide.
maxFileSync and Primary Domain Check
The maxFileSync utility has a check when adding a station as a Slave to
a Master group for a match of the Primary Domain of the Slave with the
Primary Domain of the Master. If they do not match, the user is asked
to confirm that the addition should continue.
IOBusConfig support for DPU MR
Added support for new I/O modules types and I-Module bus used by
the DPU MR.
mxsProxy
The mxsProxy application, which provides proxy access to
maxSTORIAN data across multiple domains, has been updated to allow
for a maxSTORIAN service name that does not start with “_MXS” via
command line input “/Include=<maxSTORIAN Service Name>”.
For more details, please refer to Manual 278730 maxSTORIAN User’s
Guide.
Valmet 1-3
DPUMRSetup
This program has been modified to disallow installation of controller
files older than version 6.1.0.7. If older 6.1 files exist when this utility
is run, it will prompt the user to install the latest version. Versions
older than 6.1 (e.g. 6.0) will be excluded from the selection list if they
are on the disk.
Standard Configuration Libraries for Allen Bradley EIP and
SCM
The configuration libraries for the version 6.1 controller and above
have been updated to support redundancy. For more details on the use
of these updates, please refer to Manual 278718 DPU-ACN Links
Configuration User’s Guide.
SbpSpy
This release adds the ability to resize the dialog that shows Message
Details to allow viewing more information without scrolling.
maxDPUTOOLS Improvements
This release includes the following improvements to maxDPUTOOLS:
1. Added checks for exceeding point and reference counts before
a download. Download dialog now shows these counts along
with limits, and % usage.
o When exceeding 90% the display shows warning in
yellow.
o When exceeding 100% the display shows error in red,
and requires download confirmation to proceed beyond
the recommended limits.
2. Added new workstation read only security download when
present for the MR and MR2.
3. Corrected date string comparison of custom block differences
during incremental download.
4. Improve incremental download to minimize any temporary
increase in service counts, by recognizing and deleting marked
services sooner, rather than waiting until add services fully
completes.
5. Omit AlmSev and Defeat writes on download when these
attributes are wired to a parent. DPU was passing these through
unlike other attributes, where the write is ignored when wired.
6. Corrected incremental download differencing error, due to
wrong HID lookup for a nested custom block.
7. Improved the Add Group dialog to allow creating a hierarchy
without exiting the dialog. Also provide immediately switching
to block addition mode for the last group added.
Manual 278597 maxDPUTOOLS User’s Guide has been updated with
details about these changes.
Release Overview
Valmet 1-4
maxINIT Interactive Interface
This release adds the ability to resize the maxINIT Dialog. It also
includes a new feature that will filter out everything except SBP errors
when the “ShowErrorsOnly” keyword is used.
For more details, please refer to Manual 278594 Auxiliary Functions
User’s Guide section “Creating extra services and values for display
support”.
Standard Displays Changes
ReportServerStatus.MN
The History Report Server Status display did not provide correct
navigation to the pop-ups for detailed information about the History
Report Service. To correct a customized version of the display with the
problem make the following change to the Navigation for each pop-up:
From: "SystemStatus\RptDetailsTabular.MN" dp1=%param2%
To:"SystemStatus\RptDetailsTabular.MN"dp1=[%{param1}]%{param2}
ForcedPtSummary_DPU4E.MN
This display is similar to the standard Manual Points Summary display.
This Forced Point Summary display shows only ATAG and DTAG
points that are in manual mode. Buttons with navigation to this new
display have been added to the other summary displays.
MR2 Controller Displays
New controller detail displays have been added in support of the MR2
version of the maxDNA Controllers. The DPU4fStatus display has
been updated with Templates for providing navigation to these new
displays.
WorkStation support for DPU MR2
This release adds preliminary support for the new MR2 controller. This
includes:
1. maxDPUTOOLS support, including the 7.0 Master database.
2. New MR2 Details displays
3. DPUMRSetup support
Valmet 1-5
4. Standard Libraries for version 7.0
5. NetAnalyze support with a new icon to represent the MR2
6. CheckBios support to recognize the MR2
7. Note: a Controller version of at least 7.0 is required to make
use of these new features.

when closing a pop-up has been added.
Release Overview
Valmet 1-6
Change the MCS Registry User default setting from “No” to “Yes” to
eliminate this new feature. Then restart the system.
maxSCRIPT Run Command Enhancement
The maxSCRIPT Run command has been enhanced with the addition of
an optional third parameter to define command line parameters to the
program being started. For example, to run a custom application with
one parameter:
Run "C:\Custom\Applications\MyApp.exe, NoMatch, MyApp %param1%”
Please refer to Manual 278588 – maxSCRIPT User’s Guide for details
on Using the Run Command in Volume 5 of maxDNA documentation.
New Report Subsystem Features
The Report Subsystem has been enhanced as follows:
1. Separate Start of Shift Time
2. New Shift information added to the database
3. New Report attributes
4. User interface improvements when creating reports
5. Improvements to online Report user interfaces
Please refer to Manual 278583 – History Reports User’s Guide for
details in Volume 2 of maxDNA documentation.
Report Control Panel Application
The Report Control Panel has been enhanced as follows:
1. Both the Generated and Archived report listings now include
Start and End time, interval, and coverage type (Demand,
Hourly, Shift Daily…).
2. The generated and archived report listings can be filtering by
report, coverage, and time of creation.
3. The initial display and updating performance are faster.
4. Larger list capacity can be achieved.
Please refer to Manual 278583 – History Reports User’s Guide for
details in Volume 2 of maxDNA documentation.
New Report Print Preview Application
A new Report Print Preview program can be launched as a popup in
maxVUE, via a maxScript Run command, to preview a report
previously generated in the report package subsystem. A typical
application is to add a button to the horizontal toolbar on a maxVUE
display to view the last generated Hourly, Shift, or Daily version of a
select report by name, related to the current maxVUE display content.
Valmet 1-7
Refer to chapter 6 of the Manual 278583 – History Reports User’s
Guide for more details.
Legacy Report Migration
Note that in Windows 7 the legacy report export options for Lotus 123
and Excel 5.0 Extended are no longer supported due to a change in
Crystal reports. These will be automatically changed to Excel 5.0, when
a report definition is opened in the editor. Refer to Chapter 3 of this
document.
Event Subsystem – Duplicate Events for same Point
The Event subsystem has been enhanced to allow for duplicate events
with different severity level for the same point at the same time.
New maxSTORIAN Statistics
Two new statistics have been added for maxSTORIAN retrieval:
1. FIRST – the value of the point at the start of the interval (as
opposed to SAMPLE which is the value at the end of the
interval).
2. DIFF – meaningful for use with counter-type values only –
shows the difference between the start of the interval and the
end of the interval with automatic detection of a counter
resetting during the interval.
New CheckBIOS Utility
The CheckBIOS utility is available via the maxDPU Utilities menu.
This program checks the BIOS settings of all of the DPU MRs and
ACN MRs that are accessible from the workstation. Non “MR”
controllers are skipped. Click the “Check DPUs” button on the dialog
to collect the BIOS settings. If all MR BIOS settings are correct, the
following pop-up will appear:
Controllers with incorrect BIOS settings will be shown on the dialog.
A DPU MR or ACN MR with incorrect BIOS setting will operate
erratically and be prone to resets and takeovers. DPU MR releases
from December 2014 (6.1.0.5) and onward contain an automatic BIOS
fixer. ACN MR release 6.1.0.7 (June 2015) has an automatic BIOS
Release Overview
Valmet 1-8
fixer. A controller with bad BIOS settings should be upgraded to one
of these releases as soon as possible. Note that the MR SD flash must
be updated on a local card reader to get the BIOS fixer.
Virtual DPU Backup
Relaxed the timeout for BackupVirtual link failure from 2 seconds to
10 seconds. In addition, this value is now configurable via a command
line option “/ReadTime n” where n may be between 2 – 30. If not
supplied, the value defaults to 10. This relaxed failure detection
eliminates unexpected virtual DPU takeovers during heavy workstation
CPU usage.
maxDNA List Control Pop-up Navigation
Special consideration needs to be taken when configuring display
navigation associated with clicking on a maxDNA List Control.
The List Control provides the ability to show a grid of information
about system points. The cells of this control may be configured to
show information about multiple unique points in the system.
Each cell may be configured to allow the use to take an action when
that cell is clicked – write a value or set the selected point for the
information shown by that cell.
The control as a whole may also be configured to perform pop-up
navigation when it is clicked. This is often accomplished by setting the
display path like this:
"Popups\%{%{param1}.objtype}\%{%{param1}.objtype}-control.mn"
where param1 is set to a system tagname. The requested pop-up is
configured to use the selected point for displaying information.
This works as long as the user clicks inside a cell on the List Control
where every cell is associated with the same system point. The list
control sets the selected point and requests maxVUE Runtime to
navigate to the pop-up.
However, if there is a border around the List Control and the user
actually clicks on the border around the List Control, the selected point
is not set (because the click was not in a cell) and the pop-up content
will be based on whatever the selected point is at that time.
This problem can be resolved by changing the display path to be:
"Popups\%{%{param1}.objtype}\%{%{param1}.objtype}-control.mn" dp1=%{%{param1}.tagname}
Valmet 1-9
and changing the pop-up(s) to be based on DP1 expansion, rather than
on the selected point.
Note that this means all pop-up navigate (e.g. right click menus,
horizontal toolbars) must use this technique.
SimConsole Improvements
New features have been added to the SimConsole interface:
1. Reset Wait Time Setup – the user may specify a time in
seconds to wait before commanding Virtual DPUs to start
running.
2. Protected Scenarios – the user may define specific scenarios as
protected to keep them from accidentally being overwritten or
deleted.
3. Reset time improvement – Virtual DPUs are now commanded
to reload simultaneously if running on different maxSTATIONs
instead of processing each one serially.
Note: It is no longer necessary to copy the SimConsole executable from
C:\Mcs\Simulation to C:\Custom\Applications\Simulation.
For more details on running and setup of SimConsole, please refer to
Chapter 7 of Manual 278707 – Virtual DPU Simulation in Volume 5.

maxDPUTools changes
Release Overview
Valmet 1-10
Changes have been made to the Online differences, DPU upload, and DPU
Bulk Upload dialog displays to include the showing of the current status of both
DPUs of a DPU pair. The intent is to allow the user to choose the Inactive Hot
member of a DPU pair for the selected operation. Previously for differences
and Bulk Upload, only the active DPU was used by default. Selecting the
Inactive Hot DPU will produce the same results as using the Active DPU, and
avoids the additional loading on the Active DPU, which has the potential to
slow peer-to-peer subscription data transfer, causing problems when these data
transfers are critically timed. The dialog displays now accentuate with highlight
text that an Inactive Hot DPU is the preferred choice to use when present.
Please reference the updated online manual entitled
“278597_maxDPUTools_B5” in the folder “C:\MCS\maxDOCS\_Release 6.0
Manuals\278611 Volume 2”.
In addition, updated master configurations and libraries are included to match
the recent releases for DPU 4F version 4.6, and DPU MR version 6.1.0.1.
These include changes in the optional Network Storm configuration, and
support for the new features of the FBG and EFB algorithm blocks.

VB Script to Convert Trend Displays
This release includes a VB script that may be used to aid in converting
trend displays when upgrading from the older 4 x 3 monitors to the
newer wide screen monitors. The two older Trend Wrapper controls do
not stretch themselves to fit on the wide screen monitors, but the
Sizable Trend Wrapper does. This script processes MNT files created
by maxVUE Editor and converts to a new MNT file using the Sizable
Trend Wrapper with the properties from the older wrappers.
The new MNT files may be imported using the maxVUE Editor which
will convert the displays to use the newer Sizable Trend Wrapper.
More detailed instructions may be found in Publication 278594

2. Under the "Bitmap" tab, a "Use HalfTone" check box. Use this
to display bitmap using half tone drawing mode.
3. Added a new tab "Drag" in the control properties to provide the
following options:
Write Value Identifier: Specify this identifier to enable
writing a value represented by the position of the cursor on
the Bar Control. Clicking at the current value position and
dragging the cursor to a new position will write to this
identifier.
Confirm on Release: Check this box to have the user
confirm that a write to the Write Value Identifier should
actually be performed.
Intermediate Write Value Identifier: Specify this
identifier for use with the check boxes below it. This

identifier will show either the current value of the Point
Identifier (specified in the Live Data tab) or the value being
calculated while dragging the bar.
Follow Read Identifier when not dragging: Check this
option to set the "Intermediate Write Value Identifier" to
the value of Point Identifier (from the Live Data tab) when
not dragging.
Create Temporary in LSS: Check this option to specify
that the Intermediate Write Value Identifier should be
created as a temporary LSS service. If "Create Temporary
in LSS" check box is unchecked, then the Intermediate
Write Value must be an existing Service and Attribute.
Show value while dragging: Check this option to display
the value in a tool tip representing the position of the Bar
when the bar is being dragged.
Count Major Ticks in Range: Use this option to display
major tick marks on the bar control. The bar is divided into
“Count” spaces with a major tick mark dividing each space.
Major Tick Color: Specify the color of the major ticks by
clicking on the bitmap next to Major Tick Color.
Count Minor Ticks in Range: Use this option to display
the minor tick marks between major tick marks on the bar
control. The space between each major tick is divided into
“Count” spaces with a minor tick mark dividing each space.

Release 6.0.2 Update Details
SimTransport User Interfaces
When SimTransport is run as a service, the user interface that shows
Virtual DPU status via its dialog window is not available. Changes
have been made to remedy this:
A tab showing the information that would be shown on the
SimTransport dialog application has been added to
SBPMonitor. This tab is only shown if SimTransport is
configured to run.
SimTransport has been updated to support browsing of the
information it maintains via the Point Browser.
maxDPUTools
Improvements have been added to validate the maxPAC bus address
assignments based on the rules for modulo address alignment, and span
of addresses required per the different buffer types combined with
maxPAC attribute setting. Fast DIB address ranges will also be
validated.
Data validation for the address will take place on the detail grid as entry
is completed. Dropdowns have been added to now show HEX address
format as well as integer value. Complete Validation can be demanded
but will also run prior to an install. Errors such as invalid or
overlapping address assignments will prevent a download from starting
until corrected. A docked validation pane will appear on demand to
show the results and allow navigation to the detail when correction is
needed.
The Hardware tab has also been improved to show the range of bus
addressing used by a buffer, and will include yellow or red background
highlighting of problems along with error message tooltips.
Advance configuration support has been added for the new model DPU
MR and ACN MR. Each has a 6.0 release version master configuration
included. The configuration file types will use file extents of
“DPUMR”, and “ACNMR” to distinguish them from the “4E” and
“4F”. Upwards conversion is supported for migration of existing
configurations to the newer versions as needed.
Refer to the updated “278597_maxDPUTools_B3.doc”.
Valmet 1-23
maxVUE Editor and Runtime
Improvements have been made to maxVUE to handle the situation
where it may be opening a display with unregistered (custom) OCX
controls. These OCX controls could be embedded in the display itself
or part of an MNG Group.
An OCX that is embedded in a display will be drawn as a white
area with red stripes.
An OCX that is part of an MNG will not draw.
A warning message is output when such an OCX is discovered.
maxVUE Editor will not save a display with an embedded OCX
that has caused the warning message. A display that uses
MNG(s) with this warning will be saved, but a source display
used to generate the MNG will not be saveable.
The layers dialog in maxVUE Editor may be used to find
embedded OCX controls and delete them so the display can be
saved if desired.

Extended are no longer supported due to a change in Crystal reports.
These will be automatically changed to Excel 5.0, when a report
definition is opened in the editor.
Perform these steps on the station that will run the History Report
Server before configuring the server to run. Failure to perform these
steps may cause the Report Server to abort.
