Millions of people have read How to Win Friends andInfluence People, the classic self‐improvement book firstpublished in 1936 by Dale Carnegie ‐ our godfather ofleadership studies. You could argue that Carnegie's book should have beencalled "How to Win Friends and Positively InfluencePeople." In our modern drive to increase reach and buildplatform, it is easy to get so caught up in numbers that weforget how influence can be negative as well as positive.Often, negative influence comes in the form of our naturaldrive to want to win at EVERYTHING, even at the cost oflosing loved ones.
What does it mean to win? What does this idea of "winning" anybody mean? Christians have long spoken of "winning souls" for Christ. Suchlanguage goes all the way back to the ancient Proverbs. Do we need to win people to our church or organization?To our way of thinking? Do we just need to win arguments? continue reading

Rev. Lawrence A. Drum, 97, who died on March 19. Rev. Drum was preceded in death by his wife, Andrie, in2006. He was ordained in 1955 as a minister of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, and became UnitedMethodist when the denominations merged. He was an ordained elder who served the West Ohio congregationsof Edgerton (1955); Belmore Center (1956); Zion (Wauseon, 1960); Broken Sword, Lykens, and Olive Branch (1968);Salem (Toledo, 1970); Central (Toledo, 1976); and Grace (Walbridge, 1979). Phyllis Jean Goff, 81, who died on January 17. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. William J. Goff,who was a retired elder at the time of his passing. As a pastor's wife, she served alongside her husband in churchesin the Rocky River Conference (1956); Western Pennsylvania Conference (1958); and his appointments in West Ohioas Protestant Chaplain, Ohio Penitentiary Columbus (1967); Protestant Chaplain, Ohio Reformatory for Women,Marysville (1973); and York Center United Methodist Church (1993) in West Mansfield. Obituary. Services were heldin January at the United Methodist Church of the Master in Westerville. Condolences may be made online at HillsFuneral Home. Rev. Dr. M.A. "Bill" Kunkle Jr., 82, who died on March 14. Bill is survived by his wife, Esther.
