Max Clifford Guilty Of Indecently Assaulting Teenage Girls

Charges

• After deliberating for 32 hours, jurors found Clifford guilty of eight counts of indecent assault between 1977 and 1985.

• He was found not guilty of two other charges of indecent assault. The jury could not decide on one further count.

• Clifford was granted conditional bail but told by the judge that that should not be taken as an indication of the sentence that would be passed on Friday.

Public, Criminal Offence

• Max’s offence is “criminal” because his assault is counted under the “crimes” in the Criminal Code of Canada.

• His offence is “public” because he is being punished with a law that applies to all individuals the same way.

Resolution

• The court is still deciding on his sentence and will be decided on Friday.

• Everyone who commits a sexual assault is guilty of an indictable offence and is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years and, if the complainant is under the age of 16 years, to a minimum punishment of imprisonment for a term of one year.

• He should at least have to serve the 10 years in prison.

Relation to Canadian Law

• The relation to Canadian law is that the same case could easily happen in Canada and the offender would be charged with the same sentence.
