Background

Maverick PR is an innovative public Relations management service provider, focused on promoting

strong marketing concepts and excelling in client satisfaction. Our aim is to improve and maintain

the brands interaction with their internal and external stakeholders. We seek to establish a

partnership with our client and measure our success though an increase in awareness, sales and

overall strength of the brand.

An organisation hand-picked by the Department of Public Relations and Communications Studies to

plan the annual Public Relations Student conference. As member of the Department of Public

Relations and Communications Sciences, a conglomerate of event planning groups, it is a testament

to Maverick PR’s skills and abilities that the organisation was chosen to execute this event. Each

member of Maverick PR is an expert at their field, with years of experience. This gives Maverick PR

an added advantage when compared with their competitors within their field of speciality.

With the brand management and event planning market thriving in South Africa, Maverick PR is at

the cutting edge of a booming market. Providing High end brand management Maverick PR by,

combining traditional brand management techniques and unorthodox, new and innovative methods

aimed at providing the client with a new and superior experience.

Maverick PR has several objectives that they will achieve within the next five years. The first is an

increase in sales, reaching a position of profitability within two years. Maverick PR would also like to

expand their brand from a regional brand to a national one, representing both national and

international brands in the South Africa market. Lastly Maverick PR would like to achieve the status

of the premiere brand management company with a comprehensive understanding of the brands

they represent as well as their consumers.

In addition to the capital contribution provided by the Department of Public Relations and

Communication Sciences of R10 000, Maverick PR aims to raise a further R8583 to meet their capital

demand of R18 583. They aim to achieve this by obtaining funding from various sponsors in order to

execute the various activities required to successfully plan the Department of Public Relations and

Communication Sciences student Conference.

Rehab Books & Technology was born when founder and former NMMU student

Ross Johnston began selling 2nd hand textbooks out of cardboard boxes. Johnston

spotted the need that some students had to sell 2nd hand textbooks and others that

needed them. He identified the difficulties that students were facing in acquiring

textbooks, namely the expense.

In 2012, built their first Rehab Books & Technology shop inside the main cafeteria on

South Campus. Rehab now offers new books, 2nd hand books, technology products

as well as a discount programme for members which can be used at the stores of

participating partners such as Intercape bus service. In addition to servicing the

University community, Rehab also supplies books to high schools in and around the

Port Elizabeth area. Rehab is also involved in many ongoing sponsorship initiatives

and to date has donated over R50 000 to various causes, as giving back to the

community that has supported and contributed to their growth is a strong part of the

Rehab ethos.

News Cafe offers and facilitates a premium entertainment experience for its

aspirational customer base. This is achieved by efficiently serving world class food

and premier beverage choices in an atmosphere that is contemporary, vibrant and

relevant. Situated all around South Africa and up into the African continent, News

café is the market leaders in entertainment venue offerings. Our brand achieves this

Since its launch on 1 October 2011, Bat TV has made great strides in providing

quality viewing entertainment to all facets of demographics residing in and around

the Nelson Mandela Bay area. Bay TV broadcasts in Port Elizabeth and its

surrounding areas including Bethelsdorp, Uitenhage, Ibayi, Despatch, Humansdorp,

Jeffreys Bay, Motherwell, KwaNoBuhle and beyond, making our current target

market size approximately 1.5 million viewers. Our broadcasting languages include

English, Afrikaans and Xhosa, making Bay tv a diverse communications platform.

General content covers local news, sport, youth, children, women's issues, current

Blue Waters is a café-styled restaurant with relaxed atmosphere. It has a wonderful

daytime vibe which is ideal for business lunches. We also cater for romantic night

settings or just a great family meal. The restaurant has one of the best views in Port Elizabeth, with a balcony that overlooks the ocean. We are open from 7.30am till 10pm. Guest speakers

Michelle Campbell Michelle has gathered over 17 years’ experience in the

public relations and communications field both in

South Africa as well as in the United Kingdom.

Michelle has delivered hundreds of successful events

and PR campaigns and loves the fact that her

industry is continuously growing and evolving.

Michelle loves to share her knowledge and

experience, particularly with the youth and is always

happy to get involved in projects where she can do

this. Michelle has worked with clients such as the

BBC, DStv, Starbucks Coffee Company to name but

a few.

Ed Richardson Ed Richardson matriculated from Capricorn High School

in Polokwane. He then went to Rhodes University

where he obtained a Bachelor of Journalism degree in

1977, majoring in Journalism and Psychology. Since

then Ed has worked in on newspapers, television and

radio. His experience includes all types of field

reporting and management. He headed up a television

export service within the SABC and also spent three

years as executive producer of what was then Radio

Today and Audiomix on what was then Radio South

Africa.

Debbie Derry

Debbie Derry is head of communications at Nelson

Mandela Metropolitan University or, to use her phrase,

she is the university’s chief sunshine journalist. Her job

is to sell the good news about NMMU – a dynamic

African university with a big, big future. She and her

team of four do this – grow the university’s positive

image - via events, publications, social media,

advertising, branding campaigns and media coverage.
