FINANCIAL AID REMINDERS All seniors should consider applying for financial aid to attend college (4-year, 2-year and technical colleges) even if you don’t believe you will qualify for student aid. Some col-leges want this information on file regardless of whether you qualify for federal aid before they will award institutional scholarships! The FAFSA can (and should!) be completed now. The

website to complete this form is www.fafsa.ed.gov. Please take care not to use a “.com” with this website!!!

If you are a College Bound Scholarship senior, you must complete the FAFSA by your college priority deadlines.

Families can now link filed tax information to your FAFSA using completed taxes from 2015. This should streamline the process.

Some seniors will need to complete the PROFILE in addi-tion to the FAFSA. The PROFILE is a supplement required by a few independent colleges and universities. Please see us if you have a question about needing to fill this out. This can be completed now for those of you apply-ing to colleges that require this form at https://profileonline.collegeboard.com/index.jsp.

Please feel free to contact the financial aid offices of any of our local colleges/universities as you are completing the form if you have questions.

ACT AND SAT TESTING FOR SENIORS Seniors planning to apply to a four-year college are encour-

aged to plan accordingly to take the ACT and SAT. New this

year: The University of Washington – Seattle will be Super

Scoring both the ACT and SAT! This means it is important for

students to send all test scores so that the UW-Seattle can

take the best scores from multiple test dates. Please see your

counselor with questions.

Both the ACT and SAT are accepted at ALL colleges.

To register, students are encouraged to register online. In-

structions for completing registration online are available in

the counseling center. The websites are: ACT: www.act.org

SAT and SAT Subject Tests: http://sat.collegeboard.org/

home

Remember that you can choose which ACT scores are sent directly from the testing agency but SAT will send all scores. You are encouraged to have scores sent to colleges at the time you register to avoid paying extra at a later date. Please see your counselor if you have any questions.

COLLEGE PLANNING NIGHT FOR

JUNIORS AND SOPHOMORES

Meadowdale High School is honored to be hosting the 2017 Junior-Sophomore College Planning Night on Tuesday, Feb-ruary 14th at 7:00 pm. Our keynote speaker will be Mike Sex-ton, Vice President for Enrollment at Santa Clara University.

Following the keynote address, we will offer incredible breakout sessions about various aspects of college admis-sions. Even if you have attended in the past, we encourage you to come again as you cannot see all sessions in one night. Students are encouraged to attend with their parents/guardians. All attendees will also receive the Guide to College Admissions produced by the Meadowdale High School Coun-selors. Breakout sessions include, but are not limited to:

Applying to public universities in Washington state · Opportunities at community colleges · The ACT and SAT · Financing College · Writing the admission essay and personal statement · College for students with learning disabilities · Opportunities for the artistically talented student · Selective college admissions · The NCAA and the student athlete · College for first generation students · Opportunities in Canada · Student Panel · The Parent Perspective

Please call the counseling center at 425.431.7658 for more

information.

UW APPLICATION DEADLINES The University of Washington – Seattle’s FINAL application dead-line was December 1, 2016. If a student has not submitted his/her application by this date, the application will not be considered for admission to the Seattle campus. All applications will receive a holistic review by two readers. Admission decisions for all appli-cants will be mailed between March 15 and March 31, 2017. Applications can still be submitted to the UW-Bothell and UW-Tacoma campuses through January 15, 2017.

From the Career Center!

Did you know your Mav can now view their volunteer hours this year in Skyward? They can look under the Community Service hours to see what hours they have logged! Wondering what they can use volunteer hours for at Meadowdale? Come down to the Career Center and pick up a volunteer packet!

PSAT AND Pre-ACT TEST RESULTS

The MHS Counseling Department is waiting to receive paper

reports for both of these tests. Once received, we will be visiting

history classes to return results and test booklets to students –

we hope within the first couple weeks of January.

In the meantime, PSAT scores can be accessed through College

Board accounts and Naviance. In the meantime, resources avail-

able to students for understanding results:

1. How students access their scores online. A one-page PDF

flowchart that anticipates the hurdles students might encounter

when attempting to retrieve scores and linking to Khan Academy

to take advantage of customized study plans based on the PSAT.

2. Understanding the PSAT score report. What to make of the

different percentile groups and subscores and what you can

learn from the numbers.

3. You just took the PSAT. Now what? A discussion of sensible

next steps after receiving PSAT scores. We feel that the PSAT

shouldn't be an automatic springboard into the SAT but rather a

tool to help make a fully informed decision between the SAT and

ACT.

4. Using PSAT scores to compare SAT and ACT. User-friendly

chart and table to easily compare scores using available concord-

ance information. Also available as one-page PDF. (Note: This

tool has been updated to reflect differences between the per-

centile information CB released in January 2016 versus the re-

lease in June 2016.)

5. How to choose between SAT and ACT when scores are equiva-

lent. The ACT has been more popular in recent years but the SAT

is a better fit for many students. This post examines the more

subtle factors that students and counselors may want to consid-

er when overall scores on practice tests are a dead heat.

6. What is a "good" score on the PSAT? This is not the "right"

question per se, but it's certainly an inevitable question. PSAT

scores are still new, and most colleges will not report scores on

the new SAT from enrolled students until spring 2018. Mean-

while, this tool provides estimated new SAT ranges, as well as

the most recent actual ACT ranges, for a diverse group of nearly

400 colleges and universities. Also available as PDF.

Reminder to all seniors!

Mavs can check out the scholarship list on the Meadowdale Website for great opportunities. Currently some great local scholarships to apply for include the Edmonds Rotary, Edmonds Lions Club and the Foundation for Edmonds School Dis-trict. Students can go to Meadowdale High School’s main page, pick the counseling tab at the top, then click college information and they will see a link for a current list of scholarships. The same list and paper applications are also available in the coun-seling office. Please advise your Seniors to see Ms. Lee with questions.

Share the Joy of the Season

Please join us on Monday, December 19th starting at 6:30 pm at The Hook in Perrinville for an evening of holiday fun as we gath-er to raise funds for the Kenny Hummel Memorial Foundation. The Hook will once again graciously host our event and will do-nate a portion of the days’ proceeds to Kenny’s Founda-tion. They will run Kenny’s favorite Christmas Movie, Elf – The Movie, continuously throughout the evening. We have used funds donated to the Foundation to fund scholar-ships for Meadowdale High School student-athletes to assist them as they pursue their athletic endeavors.

Please stop by and join us if you’re able – any

donation is graciously appreciated.
