Multicultural arts definitely provides avital ingredient in achieving a stronglevel of development inmulticulturalism for our community. While the importance and benefits ofmulticulturalism are often articulated, frequently the support and theinfrastructure does not necessarilyequate to the need or demand onmulticultural arts organisations likeMulticultural Arts Victoria. What doescontinue to happen is thatmulticultural arts attractsextraordinary people doingextraordinary things.

Melbourne City Council articulates theimportance of diversity and aresupporting the development of theinfrastructure. Recently, MAV receivedtriennial funding from Melbourne CityCouncil, who clearly support diversityin their Arts and Cultural Program.MAV is proud to work in partnershipwith the Melbourne City Council toensure diversity in the Arts isdeveloped and profiled in the City ofMelbourne.

In the next months coming activities we have a fine example ofextraordinary people creating extraordinary projects. We have aworld poetry festival commencing in the second weekend ofAugust, at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA). In Other Wordsis an event planned by Lella Carridi and Janna Hilbrink who arepassionate about words, poetry and translation. This is inauguralevent, will no doubt make a significant mark in the culturalcalendar of Melbourne. MAV congratulates Jana and Lella on theirvision, passion and dedication to the project.

Another inspiring individual is Wairangi Paki from Te RangatahiMaori Cultural Group in Perth. He was instrumental in the building ofTe Karangatahi, the first Australian built traditional Waka (canoe). The Waka has been brought to Melbourne through the generoussupport of the Victorian Multicultural Commission and theMelbourne City Council. The Waka will be launched on the YarraRiver on September the 3rd at 11:00 am with the blessing of theindigenous community. Multicultural Arts Victoria is working closelyin partnership with Te Roopu Ataawhai, the custodians of theCanoe, in Melbourne. The project Te Kotahitanga (Unity) isbringing the New Zealand and Maori communities together tocelebrate Maori & NZ culture with the wider community. The Wakais a spiritual entity and will acknowledge and celebrate NewZealand indigenous Maori culture. The New Zealand Consulate, NZBusiness Council, Federation Square, ArtsWA, Parks Victoria, JMAand Tenix are also supporting this important cultural project.

In September, Multicultural Arts Victoria, as part of kultour, thenetwork dedicated to touring quality multicultural arts, is presentingRemember Me in Lismore and Brisbane; a contemporary dancepiece. Unfortunately, Melbourne will have to wait to see this uniqueproduction. MAV will continue to seek funding to presentRemember Me and other contemporary, indigenous andmulticultural dance works in Victoria. Jane Carew Reid, kultourcoordinator, based at MAV has finalized a quality program fortouring in 2006, which will be announced later in the year, whichonce again will open up opportunities for touring qualitymulticultural arts which will include contemporary dance. AustraliaCouncil is to be congratulated on their vision and support for thedevelopment of multicultural arts.

MAV continues to create new opportunities for artists throughestablished and new partnerships. Multicultural Arts Victoria iscontinuing to present an exciting program. On 29 July Deli Divaswill be held, another high quality concert at the Iwaki Auditorium.supported by Music Deli Radio National. MAV is also workingclosely with the Spanish Consulate, Mr. Federico Palemero toexhibit the works of Spanish artist Luis Bayonas. Luis will exhibit aseries of works in Collingwood on 1 October.

Also to be congratulated, is Tony Yap and his creative team whoperformed in Malaysia at Malaysian Dance Festival 2005 throughthe generous support of the Australian High Commission and theRivergrass Dance Company in Malaysia and Arts Victoria. We alsocongratulate Unified Gecko on their successful Australia CouncilFunding to tour internationally to Turkey in June and July.Congratulations to artist and writer Xenia Hanusiak who hasreceived a three month funded Fellowship from the State library forGolden Threads, based on an opera on the gold fields in Bendigo.

Our extraordinary staff at MAV, are also doing extraordinary things.Miriam Abud is currently in Senegal, getting married; wecongratulate Miriam and Hadim. Anita Larkin, our refugee festivalcoordinator is touring Turkey with Unified Gecko on a well earnedrest after a very successful Refugee & Asylum Seekers Festival.Anita who was supported by Khaled Abdul Wahab did a fantasticjob. Also, Elda Koro has returned to her homeland Bosnia. We arevery lucky to have the expertise of Kris Wong and Rosie (Geek Girl)while staff are overseas.

At board level Stefan Romaniw has been invited to the Ukraine forseveral months; during this period Natalia Moravski will be ActingChair. Marcello, our long standing Board Member, is in Canada asa guest lecturer at the Ottowa School of Art and Ruth Rentschler, our Deputy Chair, is presenting papers at conferences in Irelandand Canada. Excerpt from Poetic Essay: Arnhem SandDid I see Australia saved?A crucial moral victory for the land or the fruit on the tree ignored?I’m not certain what it means but I can tell you what I saw and I’ll try to tell itwith peeled eyes, because you are my countrymen and women and I knowthat enough of you admire decency and honour, reverence and love.I saw babies and children and youths enthralled and involved in theintellectual and spiritual processes of their parents and extended family. Notgoing through the motions, not with sardonic reluctance, but fully there, inthe moment, committed.……..I saw a community grappling with the massive spiritual and social problemsof our age, struggling to bridge all generations with a faith so profound thatall could believe, to plan a way forward of such sophistication that anyeventuality could be met and accommodated.Oh, I was proud of my countrymen, relieved to see that my country could stillsucceed in the business of including all in life’s richness, life’s rewards.………It doesn’t matter that this ground was the sand of Gulkula, more shifty thanDocklands, this was the Garma Festival, and the Yolngu community, despiteall the strife they have endured, were on the Bunggul ground and united in away I’d never seen a people united before. It is inspirational that a spiritualidea, that an intellectual concept, that art, that family can be so fused withone heart, one blood.……..Bruce Pascoe will be presenting a paper on indigenous writing on Sun, 14Aug as part of the in other words festival of poetry in translation.

Te Kotahitanga (unity) is a unique cultural project presented byTe Roopu Ataawhai Inc. (Melbourne) and Te Rangatahi Inc(Perth) in partnership with Multicultural Arts Victoria. Kaupapais the founding principle of Maori cultural life. It is theuniversal, underlying spiritual force that promotes unity.Melbourne will be able to experience the kaupapa of the Maoripeople of Victoria in September. A traditional hand carvedWAKA TAUA (war canoe) is now in Melbourne for a two yearperiod.

Te Roopu Ataawhai are custodians of Te Karangtahi, the 40foot WAKA that has come from Perth. Nga Hoe Waka, rowersfrom Melbourne’s Maori community, will row the WAKA on theYarra River near Birrung Marr on September 3rd at 11.00 am– 12.00 noon. Nga Hoe Waka will perform a traditional saluteas a mark of respect to the elders of both the Aboriginal andMaori communities and guests.

The aim of Te Kotahitanga is to foster unity, Maori culture andto pass on the culture to the young in the community. TheWaka will be pivotal in Maori community cultural celebrationsto be held at Federation Square and Birrung Marr on 3September.

Wai Paki from Te Rangatahi was instrumental in the building ofthe canoe in Perth. “We the Maori people see the Waka Tauaand carvings as a living entity, physically linked to ourancestors. It provides pride, respect and understandingtowards one another in the wider community,” says Wai.

The Taonga (sacred carvings) of the Waka are made of Totaratimber that was brought from New Zealand. The Taurapa (rearcarving),Tauihu (front carving) and Rauawa (side carving) arevery beautiful and were hand carved by the community inPerth led by a team of master carvers from New Zealand .

Te Roopu Ataawhai and the New Zealand community feels

strongly that this knowledge should be maintained and passedonto the children. Bringing the Waka from Perth has enabledthe Maori community to do this and as a community to learnmore about their culture and to develop cultural pride withintheir youth. The Waka will sail on the waters with the blessingof the Koori community.

Pat Taipari Te Roopu Ataawhai explains, “The Waka displaysskills and craftsmanship created by the carvers from NewZealand and Perth. The detailed carving represents ourancestors, the different tribes, community, the differentcountries of the world and the creation of heaven and earth –thus making this magnificent work of art very sacred becauseof its spiritual significance.”

To see the Waka on the water will be a spell bindingexperience and to hear the raw energy of the warriors (rowers)do the haka and hear the traditional Maori calling will be spinetingling. The Waka, with its intricate carvings, shell inserts andfeathers to attract good spirits, will then be brought back toFederation Square where it will be on display for all to see.
