Mrs. Kathy Smith Coker ‘98 and Mrs. Liz Affronti McCabe received the Margaret S. West Excellence in Teaching Award. Accompanying a plaque was a check from the West Foundation for $1,000. This award is presented to one lower school and one upper school fac- ulty member who exhibits excellence in teaching through interest and enthusiasm of the subject matter, and who shows genuine compassion for his or her students. The financial contribution is given to the recipients in honor of their active interest in learning. The selection committee for the award consists of a member of the West family, the headmaster and the lower school principal. Mrs. Coker, who is a third grade teacher, completed her ninth year at Wilson Hall. She is the advisor of the state champion Lower School Battle of the Books team. Mrs. McCabe, who completed her fifth year at Wilson Hall, teaches Advanced Placement English Language, English III, and Senior Writing. She is the head coach of the varsity soccer team and JV volleyball team, and she serves as the advisor to the Dance Marathon Committee which raised over $15,000 for Prisma Health Children’s Hospital this year. This prestigious award, which is the highest honor a Wilson Hall student may receive, is presented to the graduating senior who possesses the ideal qualities of a Wilson Hall student. The recipient is selected based on his or her academic achieve- ment, leadership abilities, character, and contributions to the school, community, and church. The selection of the recipient is made by the unan- imous vote of the committee consisting of three faculty members, the headmaster, a member of the executive board of the PTO, a member of the board of trustees, and a member of the Wilson family. Given in mem- ory of her father, who was one of the founders of the school, Mrs. Helen Wilson Taylor ‘76 presented the award during the graduation ceremony. Matthews ReceivesState Service AwardMary Catherine Matthews ‘20 received the Larry K.Watt Award presented by the S.C. Independent SchoolAssociation to recognize the academic service-basedachievements of seniors. It is one of the highest awardspresented by the association which has over 110member schools, and Mary Catherine is the only stu-dent who attends a AAA school in SCISA to receive theaward. To be eligible for the award, the student mustbe nominated by the school and recommended by theheadmaster. The nominee must have a minimum of50 hours of documented community service after Juneof the student’s junior year (Mary Catherine has 440hours) and a minimum 3.0 GPA. Once nominated, thestudent must submit a 500-word essay outlining theimportance of community service as well as three let-ters of recommendation from school or communityleaders who have personally witnessed their serviceinitiatives. Mr. Fred Moulton, Headmaster, presentedMary Catherine with the award at her home.

The school’s newspaper, The Baron Bulletin, won the Best in State award in the S.C. Inde-pendent School Assoc. State Publication Competition. This is the 27th time the newspaper,which is advised by Mr. Sean Hoskins and Mrs. Elizabeth Mayes Hyatt ‘02, has won thisaward. The newspaper, for which Emily Banghart ‘20 served as the editor-in-chief, alsowon the awards for Best Photography and Best Layout & Design. Emily won the awardfor Best Editorial for “Animal Testing Should be Banned in the US” and Hayley Champion‘21 won the award for Best News Article for “Prisma Health Launches the CommunityHealth Mobile Unit.” Miller Jones ‘21 received an honorable mention for his sports feature“Etienne Plans to Return to Clemson for Senior Year.” The 2019 edition of the yearbook,Idylls, won the Best Photography award and received honorable mentions for copywriting,layout & design, and theme development. Sarah McCreight ‘19 served as the editor andMr. Hoskins, Mrs. Hyatt, and Mr. Ben McIver are the advisors for the yearbook.

Yoder & Hill NamedStar Student & TeacherEach year the student who achieves the highestscore on the SAT and has attended Wilson Hallfrom 10th-12th grades receives the honor ofbeing named the Star Student, and this year thehonor went to Naomi Yoder ‘20. In turn, the stu-dent has the great privilege of choosing the StarTeacher, who is one of the faculty members whohas greatly influenced his or her education atWilson Hall. Naomi chose Mr. Hugh Hill, a sci-ence teacher. Mr. Hill visited Naomi’s home topresent her award, and Naomi recorded a videoof her presentation that was emailed to herclassmates and the faculty.

McClun Presented Young AwardSarah McClun ‘20 received The William F. Young Academic Achievement Award and waspresented the award at her home by Mrs. Susan Barfield, Academic Dean. The award is

given by Dr. and Mrs. William F. Young in honor of their children, Lynn Young Anthony ’81,Rick Young ’83 and Sarah Young Gessner ’87, who graduated from Wilson Hall, and in

honor of the faculty and administration who guide, nurture, educate and motivate stu-dents. The award recognizes students who have exhibited the greatest improvement in

his or her grade point average during the school year. In addition to recognizing achieve-ment, this award was created to motivate students in their pursuit of learning.

Senior Book AwardFaculty members presented a book of their choice with a personal inscription to the student who earned the highest average in his orher class. Normally the book awards are presented during the Senior Awards Program, but since the campus was closed during the springthe teachers visited the homes of the recipients to make a personal presentation. The 53 members of the Class of 2020 received their diplomas during a morn-

ing ceremony on June 4 on Spencer Field. As part of the 50th class to grad-

uate from Wilson Hall, the members of this class are now among the 2,517

people who count themselves as one of our school’s alumni.

Class President Elise Osteen offered the invocation, which was followed by

the Co-Salutatorian speeches of Sarah Cain and Mary Catherine Matthews

and the Valedictorian speech by Naomi Yoder. The 49th John S. Wilson Award

was presented to Mary Catherine by Mrs. Helen Wilson Taylor ‘76.

Justice Buck James ‘78, South Carolina Supreme Court, was the keynote

speaker. Mr. William Croft ’90, Chairman of the Board, presented the diplomas

and Mr. Fred Moulton, Headmaster, offered the confirmation of graduates.
