Gluttony and Lust
Death and the MiserShip of Fools
Hieronymus Boschpainted c. 14901500
Death and the
Miserbelongs to the traditionof the memento mori, which
works to warn the beholder of
the the inevitabilty of death. The painting also shows theinfluence of popular fifteenth-century handbooks on the artof dying (theArs moriendi),designed to remind Christiansthat they must choose betweensinful pleasures and the way ofChrist. As Death looms on his
threshold, the miser, unable toresist worldly temptations evenin his last minutes of life, reaches for the bag of goldoffered to him by a demon.[2]
In the foreground,Bosch depicts the miser storinggold in his money chest whileclutching his rosary. Symbols
of worldly power a helmet, sword, and shield allude toearthly follies. The depiction ofsuch still-life objects tosymbolize earthly vanity, transience, or decay wouldbecome a genre in itselfamong seventeenth-centuryFlemish artists.[2]

Come now, and let us reason
together, saith the LORD: though your
sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white
as snow; though they be red like
crimson, they shall be as wool.

Ministry
Then Levi gave a great banquet for him in
his house; and there was a large crowd of tax
collectors and others sitting at the table with
them. The Pharisees and their scribes were
complaining to his disciples, saying, "Why doyou eat and drink with tax collectors and
sinners?"

Two things I asked of You, Do not
refuse me before I die: Keep deceptionand lies far from me, Give me neither
poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food
that is my portion, That I not be full anddeny You and say, "Who is the LORD?"
Or that I not be in want and steal, And
profane the name of my God.
