RPC Matters RPC – THE ESSENTIAL INGREDIENT January to March 2017 RPC Bebo Plastik t +49 4761 8600 e [email protected] RPC Bebo has now developed an innovative coffee capsule material that is able to be industrially composted while still delivering long-term protection of the contents and being able to withstand the high pressurised operation of coffee machines. The new Bebo B2nature™ material features a special multilayer sheet which incorporates an effective oxygen barrier to deliver a long ambient shelf-life and maintain the aroma and quality of the coffee in the capsule. Within 12 weeks of industrial composting only a minor amount of capsule material is left thanks to efficient decomposition, which is assisted by the coffee itself, as it provides valuable nutrients to the compost and improves the nature of the soil. The material can therefore be certified for industrial composting, based on key European and US norms. Equally important, the compostable capsule retains comparable strength and durability to one made from conventional capsule materials to ensure efficient filling and sealing, together with reliable operation in pressurised coffee machines. “B2nature™ means consumers can benefit from the convenience of small portion packs by providing a sustainable means of disposing of them,” explains Matthias Michaelis, RPC Bebo’s Business Unit Manager, Thermoformed Barrier Packaging. COMPOSTABLE CAPSULE RETAINS COFFEE QUALITY With single serve drinks systems continuing to grow in popularity, there is an increasing requirement to balance the demand for capsules with sustainable packaging solutions. “Equally important, the material also offers the high level of protection that means the freshness, aroma and quality of the coffee are not compromised.” The project for this new type of dispenser, named Penguin in reference to its shape, was led and co-ordinated by R&D at RPC Promens who produce the blow moulded top, with RPC Superfos manufacturing the injection moulded base. Each dispenser contains about 5 litres and the improved modernised pack performs significantly better than the one it replaces. A key benefit is the extra emptying power, achieved through a special design at the inner lower part of the dispenser. As Virginie Recoura, senior engineer, Packaging Research and Innovation, at Lesieur explains: “The new dispenser from RPC Promens and RPC Superfos makes it easier to exploit its content. Today our customers – fast food restaurants, canteens etc. – buy the usual amount of sauce at the usual price, but through the new dispenser they actually get up to 16% more of our product thanks to its improved emptying. This means costs savings for our customers and, on a general note, significantly less food waste.” BESPOKE DISPENSER MEANS LESS FOOD WASTE A new bespoke dispenser for seven tasty varieties of foodservice sauces is reducing food waste through improved emptying, as well as adding value to the products of French company Lesieur. The solution is the result of a successful co-creation involving RPC Promens and RPC Superfos. Another value-adding aspect of the attractive Penguin dispenser is its great ergonomic design. Not only is there a feel-good factor for end users pushing the pump, the shape of the bottom also makes it comfortable for busy catering staff to put a hand underneath it when carrying it around. Hassle-free working procedures for replacing empty dispensers with filled ones are another clear benefit and according to a market survey, the dispenser is already tremendously popular among Lesieur customers: “Our analysis shows a strikingly positive feedback,” says Virginie Recoura. “More than 95% of the respondents say that it is likely or probable that they will replace their existing sauce dispenser with our new one.” She points out that the dispenser also ensures the right amount of sauce per serving, which is in line with French legislation on better nutrition to fight obesity. BRANDENHANCEMENT

Created by RPC Design, the 3.5 litre pack features a special recess in the back which is able to accommodate the long fl exible spout that is used to dispense the AdBlue® by providing easy access to the many differently-located vehicle fi ller caps.

This technically-challenging requirement was achieved by increasing the capacity and footprint of the container and at the same time realigning the spout within the footprint.

The injection moulded polypropylene UniPak is easy to open and re-close, and features a liquid-

tight snap-on lid and a visible deterrent to tampering as standard. The strainer is made of the same high quality material as the pack, with which it is designed to fi t perfectly. The artwork, rendered in razor-

sharp photo quality using the advanced in-mould labelling technique, includes an infographic explaining the benefi ts of the strainer to customers.

Angelina Averina, Brand Manager at Santa Bremor, says the pack helps to maintain product quality.

"We opted for the pack with a strainer because it makes it easy for consumers to take some seafood from the container and leave the rest in the brine or oil for later consumption," she explains. "Our product remains juicy, tastes better and also stays fresh for longer when it is kept in the liquid in the fridge. In this way, the packaging solution safeguards the quality of our preserved seafood product, even after opening."

The new seafood range from Santa Bremor consists of a variety of the most popular types of seafood preserves in its main markets including Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Moldova. The selected UniPak contains 500g and is 95mm in diameter.

FISH CONTAINER HAS IN-BUILT STRAINERA UniPak container with an in-built strainer from RPC Superfos is being used to pack a new range of seafood products in brine and oil. The mussels, shrimps, octopus and seafood cocktails – from Santa Bremor, the leading seafood producer in Belarus – are not only benefi tting from the pack’s convenient design, but also from its novelty value, which marks it out from the competition.

“We are happy to have a big volume pack in our assortment,” continues Angelina. “The size as well as the cylindrical shape is ideal for our customers. The strainer represents a clear

advantage, because it makes sure that we stand out from our competitors. Customers remember the new seafood preserves from Santa Bremor because of the convenient strainer.”

The new range and its packaging have received positive feedback.

“We offer a high quality seafood product, complemented by a high quality packaging

solution,” Angelina concludes. “It is good to see that our distributors show plenty of interest in our new series and keep putting it on the supermarket shelf."

Santa Bremor is the largest seafood producer in the CIS region, which is made up of the countries of the former Soviet Union. It offers over 500 different product types through trade representatives in more than 80 cities.

EXCLUSIVE PROVES MOST WANTED Clarins, the world leader in cosmetics, skincare, make up and fragrance, has selected the 75ml Exclusive deodorant stick from RPC Bramlage and RPC beauté for the Azzaro Wanted for men deodorant, part of a new fragrance range. The Exclusive has been developed to meet the beauty market’s trend for cylindrical-shaped deo sticks while its square edge and pure straight lines make it ideal in particular for men’s fragrance lines.

For Clarins, the deo stick has been personalised through the use of silk-screen printing and hot stamping, and the pack is then sleeved by RPC beauté following assembly.

The collaboration with Clarins underlines RPC Bramlage’s longstanding reputation for the design and manufacture of prestige packaging utilising the company’s advanced manufacturing and decoration facilities.

The 88 x 88 mm square polypropylene tub for the new Kremgo® Lett lighter varieties also incorporates a special light protector to protect the cheese and maintain its freshness and taste.

The ability of the IML-T process to apply the pre-printed labels to the pack during the thermoforming process provides all-over decoration with high quality graphics to deliver strong branding. This is further enhanced by the Bebo Print technique of printing the lid sheet prior to thermoforming, which means the entire area of the lid is also covered.

The resulting pack creates an eye-catching and appealing look in competitive retail markets, while the lightweight easy-to-handle design delivers maximum consumer convenience.

CHEESY GOOD LOOKSAdvanced in-mould label thermoforming (IML-T) from RPC Bebo Plastik, combined with the company’s in-house Bebo Print lid printing technology, are helping to enhance the on-shelf presence of the Kremgo® range of cream cheeses from Tine SA, Norway's largest producer, distributor and exporter of dairy products.

The new design for Soulié Restauration’s Garbit brand comprises a thermoformed multilayer polypropylene container produced by RPC Bebo Plastik, combined with an injection moulded PP lid from RPC Bramlage, both in a warm terracotta colour. For effective branding, the lid is embossed with decorative details as well as the Garbit logo.

In addition to its attractive presentation in retail outlets and in the home, which also means the container can be taken directly from oven to table, the barrier pack’s layer of EVOH provides effective protection against oxygen ingress to deliver an ambient shelf-life of 18 months. Equally important, the lightweight, easy-to-handle pack offers maximum consumer convenience.

This latest solution continues the strong working partnership between Soulié Restauration and RPC Barrier Containers, who have collaborated on several

innovative convenience food projects in recent years. As well as its expertise in barrier technology, the ability to source both the container and lid from the

same company was a key factor in RPC’s selection.

“The RPC packs are attractive, practical and maintain the quality of our ready meals,” comments Camille Chatelain, Product Manager at William Saurin. “RPC’s fast-response through the development of the project was

also a major benefi t.”

The new Garbit range comprises three mouth-watering recipes – Beef Kofta &

Spicy Merguez Sausage; Vegetables & Dried Fruits; and Chicken, Lemon & Olives.

EXOTIC READY MEALS GET THE AUTHENTIC LOOKA new range of exotic ready meals from leading French food manufacturer Soulié Restauration, part of William Saurin, is being given an authentic presence on shelf thanks to a bespoke pack from RPC Barrier Containers that resembles a traditional Tajine.

Atria’s consumer studies into its previous pack revealed that end-users liked the shape, size and overall type of packaging they were used to. Based on this important feedback, the new bespoke pack was developed in close co-operation between Atria, its design agency and RPC Superfos.

“Our premium salad series, sold under an almost iconic brand, Forssan, simply needed a new packaging solution after almost 15 years in an unaltered pack,” explains Janne Hautala, Packaging Development Manager at Atria Finland. “These products have been popular in Finland for decades, so we did not want to do anything to jeopardise its status. We were looking for an upgrade, not a complete change.”

The new injection moulded polypropylene tub from RPC Superfos features a variety of printed designs according to the salads inside where previously all packs were identical with only the lid matching the actual content. In addition, an eye-catching indent on the corner of the lid indicates easy opening and re-closure.

“The result is very good,” continues Janne. “We appreciate the bigger opening corner of the lid and the better shelf appeal. Our customers seem to like the new pack, too.”

In addition to its enhanced design, the new pack also represents a weight reduction of almost 20% compared to its predecessor. In addition, it works well on the existing fi lling line with Atria experiencing improved functionality, including faster fi lling and elimination of breakages.

“We are impressed with the way RPC Superfos has handled the project and with their level of expertise,” concludes Janne. “The logistics worked out well including on-time-delivery.

“Though we have come across some minor issues along the way, these have been solved rather quickly, and we’re pleased with the attentiveness and service which we’ve received from RPC Superfos. Indeed, we feel that the packaging supplier listens to us.”

EVOLUTION NOT REVOLUTION FOR SALAD TUB A bespoke tub from RPC Superfos has been selected to pack the popular Forssan range of salads made by Atria Finland. Replacing the range’s previous pack of 15 years, the new design combines a subtle yet effective makeover with a considerably lighter container, reducing the amount of packaging waste.

NEW LOOK FRUTTISSIMA JARS Schwartauer Werke has redesigned the packaging for its classic Fruttissima fruit spreads. Working with RPC Promens Consumer Kutenholz, the new-look pack now features a black lid, while the neck of the jar has been slimmed down and the shoulders widened so that the entire container looks more modern and sophisticated. The blow moulded polypropylene jar retains its volume and fi ll weight of 250g.

The aim of the redesign was to create a stylish look that better identifi es the product as a fruit spread. RPC Promens Kutenholz’s Key Account Manager Björn Müller is delighted that the project has turned out so well and that Schwartauer Werke still relies on packaging solutions from RPC.

Leading food processor West Liberty Foods in Iowa has adopted Sæplast pallets as part of its commitment to become a landfi ll free company and to adhere to the highest standards of food safety. In particular, the company says that the Sæplast pallets offer enhanced reliability and performance compared to the injection moulded versions it had previously used.

“While our original plastic injection moulded pallets provided greater food safety, they were brittle and diffi cult to sanitize,” explains Mr Rick Lindsay, Warehouse Manager of West Liberty Foods. “They also proved to be a high cost solution due to their

PLASTIC PALLETS PROVE THE SAFE CHOICEHigh quality, increased safety and full recyclability are three of the major factors driving demand for RPC Sæplast Americas’ range of rotational moulded pallets in the USA.

lack of durability. We therefore converted to the Sæplast rotationally moulded pallets and triple wall polyethylene containers and both have performed exceptionally well.

“For example, over a year we have broken just two Sæplast pallets compared to the hundreds of injection moulded ones during a similar period, and although the initial purchase costs are higher, the overall cost of ownership is signifi cantly lower than any other option we have tried or analysed. The same is true for our processing bins, which have proved superior in all aspects including the amount of water and sanitizer required to clean them.”

This success underlines the growing popularity and the need for plastic pallets in North America. Wood remains the most widely-used material, but in markets such as food, beverage, and pharmaceuticals in particular, demand for plastic continues to grow. This is due to the material’s ability to mitigate the risk of bacteria cross contamination, the pallets’ signifi cantly longer lifespan than wood, and the fact that they can be completely recycled.

RPC Sæplast Americas Inc. offers a wide range of rotational moulded pallets all of which are manufactured in 100% food-grade polyethylene.

The Varmuza range from Delimax is on the shelf in two sizes – 210ml and 480ml – of the injection moulded pot from RPC Superfos. Each variety makes use of the In-Mould Labelling technique to present an attractive family image, and allows consumers to learn about the Delimax product range, history and ingredients by scanning the QR code with their smartphones.

Another key feature is its strong, user-friendly snap-on lid, with an indent that adds both convenience and distinctive character to the pack.

The pot is the result of market research by Delimax, a long-time collaborator with RPC Superfos.

CUP IS TOP OF THE HOPSRPC Bebo Bouxwiller is producing the beer cups for La Brasserie de Monaco, a famous bar and restaurant that has helped pioneer the growth of luxury beer.

The transparent thermoformed polypropylene cups are being used to serve the bar’s renowned ‘Biere de Monaco’, produced in its on-site microbrewery. They are personalised with the brand logo, emulating the image of the starting block of the F1 Grand Prix.

The cups offer a slim, elegant design that combines easy handling and convenience with excellent strength and stability.

The Brasserie de Monaco is a large bar and restaurant situated on the 'Route de la Piscine' in the Port of Monaco. Many important annual events are celebrated in this privileged and prestigious area, the most famous of which is the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix.

The brewery was therefore added eight years ago with a capacity of 1,500 hectolitres per year. Two people including the Master Brewer are in charge of production of a very good lager beer, a white beer and several seasonal speciality beers.

60% of the production is consumed on the premises and the remainder is distributed to other bars in Monaco.

The dessert combines delicious custard with whipped cream and pieces of waffl e to create an ice cream, and the award-winning EasySnacking™ pot, supplied its 210ml size, provided the ideal packaging format, as Lovro Vučković, Product Manager at Ledo, explains:

“The EasySnacking™ cup is a great solution. The round edges look absolutely great and the integral spoon is fantastic. Kremsnita is a typical Croatian dessert traditionally served in square pieces, so the square shape of the EasySnacking™ container is a perfect match for our new product.”

Ledo expected very good sales before putting the product on the market, and after a successful start, the company has achieved its sales target within the expected time span.

“We did not run any big promotion for the Ledo Kremsnita; all we did was one TV commercial where we introduced the current ice cream range,” says Lovro Vučković. “Ledo Kremsnita was just one of ten types of ice cream, yet it got a good deal of attention. On various social media, we have found many pictures and positive comments about our dessert - and our customers love the spoon too.”

RPC Superfos has been a packaging supplier to Ledo for several years, and the companies have an excellent working partnership as Lovro Vučković confi rms:

“I only have good words to say about the support we get from RPC Superfos. They are helpful, proactive and engaged in our world. They know our products really well and I appreciate it

“We know that our customers appreciate everyday convenience, and this is exactly what our new pack offers them,” explains Petr Grabec of Delimax. “Moreover, we strive to strengthen our relations with our customers through transparent communication and, from my point of view, we are successful in both fi elds through our new pack from RPC Superfos.”

The Varmuza salad and delicatessen range is available in retail shops and supermarkets across the Czech Republic, where Delimax is the number one food producer.

After originally ordering a standard bottle, Hermès subsequently decided to opt for a customised solution to better represent its iconic brand and create effective shelf stand-out. The resulting 300ml PETP bottle is testament to the close cooperation between Hermès and the technical sales team at the RPC site in south-east France.

The bottle features silk-screen printing on the back and a small square label on the front. Its transparent body, luminously tinted according to the range’s seven fruit-or-fl ower-inspired varieties, narrows into a chrome neck to create an elegant overall appearance complemented by a user-friendly black dispenser.

“The job went very smoothly, and both we and Hermès are pleased with the result,” comments Vincent Panaget, France Sales Manager at RPC Bramlage. “The goal for us now is to form a privileged partnership with Hermès for future bottles too.”

Founded in Paris in 1837, Hermès is one of the most famous high fashion brands in the world.

IML-T SPREADS ITS WINGSThe quality and value benefi ts of RPC Bebo’s In-Mould Label Thermoforming (IML-T) have seen the technology being extended into the butter and margarine spreads sector with the introduction of a 500g tub for long-standing customer Kerry Foods.Key to Kerry Foods’ decision to adopt IML-T was its high quality decoration appeal in combination with low lot size per design options, while allowing for highly competitive unit costings and an increased environmental profi le.

RPC Bebo’s design and engineering capabilities delivered a high-quality fi nished pack while ensuring that the customer’s production lines required no changes.

IML-T applies pre-printed labels to a container or lid during the thermoforming process. This enables high quality intricate designs in up to eight colours to be incorporated to achieve a better level of fi nish and greater coverage of the container than direct printing.

The process is fully fl exible both in terms of the type of container to be decorated and the application of the labels.

RPC Promens Industrial Rushden has installed a new automated packing system that offers customers better tray integrity and greater fl exibility in the choice of pack formats while maximising throughput. The PCE Smart Packer has been exclusively designed for RPC. It can run multiple tray sizes, bottle designs and packing formats, and can be programmed to handle any number of bespoke packaging confi gurations, while its multi-axis robot reduces the number of tray variants required.

The Smart Packer can run at maximum line speeds of 1,000 bottles per hour, packing bottles in any orientation, including mixed formats within a single tray with no bottle rotator required. Workfl ows are further optimised by rapid changeover times from as little as fi ve minutes.

The combination of fast throughput and greater fl exibility enables RPC Rushden to offer customers an enhanced fast-response service in fulfi lling their orders. The trays are also better prepared for the distribution chain as they are fully

“We are delighted with the performance of our new Smart Packer,” comments Carl Boniface, RPC Rushden’s Technical Development Manager.

“Its high-level performance is helping to increase the speed and effi ciency of our operation which in turn enables us to deliver enhanced levels of service to our customers.”

Established in 1965, Jagtenberg Plastics is a specialist in HDPE extrusion blow moulding with factories in Heerewaarden, The Netherlands, and Crailsheim, Germany, as well as a through-the-wall operation for bespoke packs at its customer ADM in Antwerp, Belgium.

The company manufactures a wide range of products including jerry cans, vessels, fuel and water containers, and watering cans in a variety of sizes, along with specialist technical parts such as foundation blocks and traffi c beacons. Its long-established expertise and experience mean that as well as the development of its own product ranges, the company can work with customers in the creation of bespoke designs and the manufacture of products from customers’ own moulds.

Additional customisation of products can be achieved through the availability of a choice of decoration options including printing, sleeving, labelling and the incorporation of booklets.

In addition to its technical skills, a key factor in Jagtenberg’s success has been the close working relationships the company has established with its customer base, some of which extend as far back as 35 years. Early involvement in each project ensures a smooth and effi cient process and optimal production at the lowest possible cost.

These core values make Jagtenberg Plastics an ideal fi t within the RPC Group, whose success is also based on its specialisation in plastic products, technical and design excellence and commitment to customer service.

“As a leader in product design and development, RPC Group is the perfect match to help us to continue to grow our business,” explains Eugène Wildöer of Jagtenberg Plastics.

“Our strengths have always been creativity, fl exibility and speed of service, and becoming part of RPC will enable us to further develop these while utilising the additional know-how and experience of the group to create additional opportunities.”

RPC EXTENDS ITS BLOW MOULDING CAPABILITIES The arrival of Jagtenberg Plastics into the RPC Promens Industrial division has further strengthened RPC’s blow moulding offering in a wide range of end markets.

POT HELPS QUARK MAKE MARKA Swedish dairy producer is using the SuperLight™ pot from RPC Superfos to pack its new range of quark. Skånemejerierne chose the thermoformed polypropylene container for its Lindahls Kvark brand after deciding to stop importing from Germany and produce and pack the product in-house.The 500g SuperLight™ is decorated by offset printing in six colours, and features different artwork for each of the 25 fl avours in the range, which include vanilla, coconut and strawberry, as well as other varieties such as low-carb lactose-free raspberry.

After swapping to their own fi lling line, Skånemejerierne’s quark production has become more cost-effi cient with the intention of further strengthening its market position in Sweden and other European countries. Importantly for the company, the change of packaging has gone unnoticed by end-users.

“The aim of the entire project was to maintain the same packaging standard as before, with only ourselves noticing the changes," explains Thore Bengtsson, Purchaser at Skånemejerierne.

"We asked RPC Superfos to deliver the same type of pack as the one we used to import, and we got what we asked for, even within a very tight time schedule. We’ve had superb cooperation with RPC Superfos, who have given us the right product quality, service and support on time and according to plan.”

Full of healthy proteins, Quark is very popular among fi tness fans and athletes.
