Teacher, what is matter?

Matter is anything that

occupies space and has

mass.

Three states of matter

Solid-rigid materials with definite shape and volume.

Liquid-definite volume independent in each container but has no definite shape.

Gas-has no definite volume and shape.

4

Molecular Structure of Solid

Particles in a solid are tightly packed, usually in a regular pattern. They vibrate (jiggle) but generally do not move from place to place.

5

Molecular Structure of Liquid

Particles in a liquid are close together with no regular arrangement. They vibrate, move about, and slide past each other.

6

Molecular Structure of Gas

Particles in a gas are well separated with no regular arrangement. They vibrate and move freely at high speeds.

7

Physical Properties of Solid

Color- orange

Shape- round

Size- big

Texture- rough

8

Special Properties of Solids

Malleability- the ability of solids to be hammered into thin sheets.

Hardness- the ability to resist physical changes.

Strength- A measure of a material's resistance to failure.

Brittleness-the ability of matter to be broken down into pieces.

9

Properties of Liquids

Have no definite shape.Have definite size and amount.Take the shape of their

containers.Move freely or they have the

ability to flow.

10

Properties of Gases

They are easy to compress, They expand to fill their

containers, and They occupy far more space

than the liquids or solids from which they form.

11

Measuring Matter Matter can be measured.

Measuring devices that are used are the weighing scale, ruler, meter stick and graduated cylinder and tape measure.

12

Good Effects of MatterMatter is everywhere. We can see it in the

kitchen, garden , dining area and many more. Solid objects like books, ball pen and paper are used in the school. Substances such as soy sauce and fish sauce are use to give taste to the foods we

eat.

13

Bad Effects of Matter

If matter is not properly utilized like the knife , it will

cut your hand or finger. Thus, if matter is not place

in it’s right place for example the pesticides,

children may reach it and it will poison them.

14

Safety Measures

Label the containers.Read directions before using.Return things to their proper places.Keep harmful substances and

breakable objects away from children.

Ask the assistance of older people.

16

Weighing ScaleTo cause the bend down with added weight.

17

Inch rulerStraightedge strip as of wood or metal for drawing straight lines and measuring lengths.

18

Graduated CylinderA solid bounded by two parallel planes and such a surface, especially such a surface having a circle as its directrix.

19

Meter stickTo measure with a meter. To supply in a measured or regulated amount

20

Tape MeasureA tape of cloth, paper, or steel marked off in a linear scale, as of inches or centimeters for taking measurement.
