MATTER – PART 2
WHAT IS MATTER?
Matter - anything that has mass and takes up space
Mass - the quantity of matter contained in an object
Weight - measures force due to gravity
How do we classify different types of matter?
By Phase or State of Matter

What is the difference between chemical and physical - changes and properties?
Physical Property - a characteristic of a material which is observed without a new substance produced
Examples - odor, color, volume, state (solid, liquid or gas)
melting or boiling point
Physical Change - a change where no new substance is formed
Examples - dissolving, tearing, hammering, phase changes or changes of state:
(solid ↔ liquid ↔ gas)
Chemistry - the study of matter and its changes
Chemical Property - a characteristic of a material which indicates its ability to form a new substance or not
Examples - flammability, corrosion of metals, reacting with oxygen
Chemical Change - a change that results in the production of a new substance, also called a reaction
Examples - Burning, corrosion, baking a cake
CaO + CO2 → CaCO3
Reactants → Products
Four General Signs of a Chemical Change
1. Gas formed2. Large energy change3. Precipitate formed4. Color change (change of odor & taste)
