Matter is made of atoms
Think about it…
• List some examples of SCALES in which a length or a size represents a much larger length of size.
• If an atom were the size of the round head of the pin in the following picture, how large would the pin actually be?
• 90 square miles (1/7 the size of London) and 80 miles high (15X the height of Mt. Everest)
Atoms are extremely small
• Atom- the smallest basic unit of matter– You can’t see an individual atom, but you
constantly see large collections of them.– Matter is atoms– So small, they can’t be seen with very strong
optical microscopes– One teaspoonful of water contains
500,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 atoms!!
Molecules
• Molecule- a particle formed when 2 or more atoms bond together, or combine– Can be made from atoms that are different or
alike– Water= 2 hydrogen atoms + 1 oxygen atom
H2O
– Hydrogen gas= 2 hydrogen atoms
– Is the smallest amount of a substance made of combined atoms that is considered to be a substance
– Made of different numbers of atoms• Carbon Monoxide= 1 carbon +1 oxygen• Vitamin E= 29 carbon + 50 hydrogen+2 oxygen
Atoms & Molecules are always in motion
• Dust in a light beam? • Molecules in the air are constantly moving
in many directions– They collide and bounce off other particles
• Water (liquid) molecules move too! – Food coloring in water…– They flow over eachother
• Solid molecules vibrate or twist but never move.
MOLECULE DANCE!!!
• Gas/Air particles= bounce/collide
• Liquid/Water particles= flow/spread
• Solid particles= vibrate/twist
