Public Impact!By Nathan Johnson, AIA, NOMA, AIA Minnesota President

I met our photographer at the recently-completed RondoCommemorative Plaza project in August to scout out potentialshots for Architecture MN. Within 15 minutes, a group ofabout 30 students from Benjamin E. Mays School descendedon the site. I marveled at how they engaged, playingwindchimes, running up and down the sculpted hill, and sittingatop the hill on the granite curb, very much as we envisionedit when we developed the design. I like to refer to thesemoments as happy surprises, finding the public completelyimmersed in something I helped create.

Every project I have worked on is a herculean effort of a great team: client, architect, consultants, contractors and others. Something that has been at the forefront of myconsciousness most of the year is thinking about the public impact of architecture.

What we do is very important. We can see people actively using the spaces wecreate. The sustainable impact of the buildings we design is well documented. Butwhat about the cultural impact of the places we create? I have more questions thananswers, but if we look at the defining character of most cities and communities, oneof the highlights is their architecture. So, even without empirical data, we can say yes, what we produce does impact culture and by extension has substantial public impact.

This is my last article for Matrix as 2018 AIA Minnesota president. I say this with a lotof optimism and pride. One of the consistent themes I have heard through the year isimpact. Through our strategic implementation plan the board has been hyper-focusedon implementing our strategic priorities:

1. Build and Mentor the Profession of Architecture2. Make Architecture Accessible, Understandable and Highly Valued.

2. Make Architecture Accessible, Understandable and Highly Valued.

We believe the strategic priorities can be very impactful. There have been programshifts, new endeavors started, and existing programs strengthened in our first year ofimplementing the Strategic Plan. 2019 promises to be an even more robust year, withsubstantial public programming being introduced. Lake Superior Design Retreat has apublic event planned in Duluth in the first quarter of the year, AIA Minneapolis isactively planning Open Doors Minneapolis for May, and AIA Minnesota has completedits first program with MNHS at the Mill City Farmers Market this fall, with moreprograms being planned for 2019.

Our biggest event, A'18 MN, the Minnesota Conference on Architecture, is in a fewdays. I look forward to having a dialogue with you about the Strategic Plan, currentAIA Minnesota initiatives and how we can have ever greater Public Impact!

GOVERNANCE CHANGES PROPOSED FOR THE AIA NORTHERN MN BOARD

At its December 6th Annual Meeting of the AIA Northern Minnesota membership, changes to thechapter's bylaws related to the size and composition of the Board of Directors will be considered.

The AIA Northern Minnesota Board of Directors is recommending these changes to "right size" theboard in the context of the size of the chapter (just over 100 members). Currently, the size of theBoard of Directors requires that approximately 10% of the total AIA Northern Minnesotamembership be serving on the Board of Directors at any one time. Over the years, this has maderecruitment for board positions challenging. (In contrast, the AIA St. Paul Board of Directorscomprises less than 3% of its membership, and the AIA Minneapolis Board of Directors comprisesabout 1% of its membership.)

Related to the recommended bylaws change to reduce the number of board members, the Boardis recommending that the Executive Committee be eliminated, as it has not been utilized in recentmemory and would not be necessary in the context of a smaller board.
