The Loch Ness Monster
1
One of the most famous natural mysteries in GreatBritain is the ‘Loch Ness Monster’. People all over theworld know about it. There are books, films andtelevision programmes about it but it is still a greatmystery. Is ‘Nessie’ real or not?
2
Loch Ness is a large lake in Scotland. The water is verycold and very deep. Around the lake there are mountains, forests and farms. It is a beautiful part ofScotland and many people go there for holidays and towalk in the countryside.
3
People say that a large monster lives in the loch andthere are lots of photographs of it. The people whobelieve in the monster think it is like a sea dinosaur and lives at the bottom of the loch. When it’s hungry it comes up and takes sheep and cows from the farms. Some people think it has a family of little monsters that it gives food to.
4
The people who live near the loch say that it is real. But ‘Nessie’ is good for tourists. A lot of people come to Loch Ness to try to see the monster and spend lots of money there. You can buy everything from clothes to towels with ‘Nessie’ on them! This is good for the area.
5
Most scientists don’t believe in ‘Nessie’. A few years ago some scientists looked at the bottom of the loch with special cameras but they didn’t find anything. They say it’s all a joke. Who is right? People likemysteries. It’s good to know that nature still has somesecrets!

Transport in the future
People are getting very worried about how we can travelin the future. In England a lot of people live in a smallarea and so there are lots of motorways and main roads.More and more cars are using these roads every day andthey are so crowded that there are always traffic jams and accidents.
Thirty years ago, many families had a car. Now, familiesoften have three or four, and the cars are getting biggerand faster. It’s not a surprise that our roads are socrowded.
So, what will happen in the future? Perhaps people cantravel together, sharing one car rather than taking two.Perhaps we can walk or cycle more and get fitter! Perhaps we can have a better public transport system so that people can travel to work by bus or train and not by car. For this, the trains and buses need to be faster, bigger and cleaner than they are now and we need more of them. The trains today are dirty, crowdedand expensive. They are also often late so people don’twant to travel on them.
We can’t continue to put more cars on the roads. If wedo, one day in the future England will be just one bigtraffic jam and no one will move!
1 A lot of people drive cars in England.
2 Most families don’t have a car.
3 More people can go in one car.

A success story
‘Totem’ is one of the most popular boy bands of the lastten years but it wasn’t an easy journey to success forthe boys.
The four members – Mark, Pete, Steve and Gary – met in 1993, when they were thirteen. They were at the same school and found that they all liked the samemusic, played an instrument and all had good voices.Mark started studying piano when he was five and Peteand Steve both got guitars for their eleventh birthdays.Gary played his father’s drums. The idea for the band was born and they started playing and singing togetherwhen they were fifteen. Their first booking was for Gary’s sister’s wedding in the local church hall. For threeyears they played at parties and weddings and peopleloved them. They decided not to go to university and tokeep the band together although Gary was an excellentscientist and Mark won prizes for his art. They workedhard at their music, didn’t get much money and carriedtheir instruments in an old white car.
They really wanted to record some songs but no onewanted to be their manager. Then, in July 1999, Pete saw an advertisement in the newspaper asking for boybands to enter a TV competition. They applied, and oneSaturday evening they sang to millions of people in theUK. They sang a sad folk song and they did it very well. It was beautiful. Everyone loved them and they won thecompetition.
Two months later the boys recorded their first CD and itwas very successful. They moved to London and boughthouses and cars for their families. Now they are the most popular boy band in the UK and last week theyagreed to make a film about their lives. Their life today is very different from when they played in school halls. And all because of one advertisement!

Sports for children
People today have a lot of different health problems. Many of them are because we eat too much and exercisetoo little. The problems can start when we are young andpeople believe that if we can encourage children to startdoing sports at an early age their heath will be muchbetter when they are older.
Sports are also good for children for other reasons. Theycan make good friends, they can learn to work in a teamand they can develop competitive skills. And regularsports activities can stop them from watching so muchtelevision!
Today, children can do more sports than ever before. There are clubs for football, swimming, gymnastics, athletics and many more. And children can start thesesports very young, sometimes from the age of three orfour. There are lots of children who do these sports.
However, not many children continue with their sportswhen they are teenagers. One reason is that the schoolsdon’t give much time for sports and another reason isthat young teenagers prefer shopping, going to thecinema or playing computer games to playing sports. This means they often give up the sports they started as younger children. It’s a pity, but it can’t be much funfor teenagers to have to get up at eight o’clock on aSaturday for swimming practice after a late party night!

Shopping today
There have been big changes in the way we shop inrecent years. Once, we went shopping because we had to. We had to buy food or clothes because we neededthem and there wasn’t a lot of choice. For most peopleshopping was not an enjoyable activity. Today it’s verydifferent. Shopping is now a leisure activity, a hobby, and people go shopping for pleasure. Often, they don’tbuy anything – it’s the looking that’s fun! Saturdaymorning is when you meet your friends in town, gossip, look round the shops, try on clothes and return theclothes you bought last week!
Another big change is that it is not only girls who shopas a hobby, boys do too. Boys today know as much aboutfashion as many girls do and there is a much biggerchoice for them today. Boys don’t only shop for clothes, they buy hair and beauty products too, as well as CDs,computer games and electronic toys like new mobilephones.
The places we go to shop have also changed. Today we don’t walk up and down the High Street looking atdifferent shops. Instead, we spend hours under the roofof a shopping mall. Here we can find everything we want. We can shop, have coffee and eat lunch. We caneven see a doctor or go to the gym! We can do all thesethings without getting cold or wet or too tired.
What more changes will there be in the way we shop inthe future? Will Internet shopping become moreimportant? We must wait and see.
1 Many years ago people went shopping…a to enjoy themselves.b to buy things they needed.c to get out of the house.
2 Young people go shopping on Saturdays…a to spend a lot of money.b because there is nothing to do.c to have fun with their friends.

Unfortunately, City starBrian Stokes was pushed in the match and broke hisright leg. The pitch was very wet because of the rainthis morning. Get better quickly, Brian, City needsyou!
In tennis, Susan Myers played American JenniferDrake this morning. It was a long match but sadlySusie lost. Last year she didn’t play for six monthsbecause of a back problem but she’s better nowand trains four hours a day. She will play anothermatch tomorrow. So, good luck Susie!
In the swimming pool the team from West Martonbeat City in today’s competition. This is the seventhtime City have lost this year. City’s trainer says thatthe swimming team hasn’t got many good youngswimmers because young people don’t want totrain every day at five o’clock. I can understandthat! Who wants to go swimming when it’s dark inthe morning? And now – basketball …
