Maths Workshop

Aims of workshop

• SIP- To raise standards of children achieving level 5 and Outcome 6

• To raise standards in mental maths• To increase children’s confidence and ability in

problem solving• To develop children’s ability to apply

Mathematics across the curriculum. LNF•

• To raise parental awareness and understanding of how Maths skills are developed at Ysgol Owen Jones

• To discuss ways parents can support children with Maths at home.

• To experience mental maths and problem solving activities.

• To understand how Maths is applied across the curriculum.

introduce

The numeracy component of the National Literacy and Numeracy Framework (LNF) sets out expectations for the development of numerical reasoning. It requires learners to do the following:

•Decide for themselves what numerical skills to use

•Apply their method to work towards a solution

•Give coherent mathematical explanations

•Reflect on the outcomes

Structure of a Maths lesson

•Mental Maths starter – daily 10 mins• Main teaching•Activity skills practice•Plenary summing up of key points

Mental Maths Starter• Recall – learning previously learned facts, introducing new facts eg addition doubles and halves

•Skills – add or subtract any pair of numbers

•Strategies – counting on or back along number line, partitioning

1. Introduce a concept

Adding two-digit numbers

Alun went to the shop and he bought 2 apples an 1 orange. The 3 fruit cost £1.15. How much change did

Alun get from £2 he gave the shopkeeper?

Cost £1.15 Pay £2 Change? Take away calculation

less than a £1

£2.00 - £1.15 = £2 - £1 = £1 – 15p = 85p

£1.15 + 85c = £2

Alun will have 85p change

Maths across the curriculum.• Science – measuring how far different cars travel pushing and pulling•Geography – transport survey – data handling•Geography – comparing money in Africa working out how much something would cost•PE – measuring heart rates before and after exercise•Art- measuring wood to cut for frames to make a picture.•History – ordering objects chronologically using place value
