Developing the content of the new A Level in Mathematics

Since its establishment in January 2014, the ALCAB Mathematics Panel has been assessing the appropriateness of the current content of the A Level programme in Mathematics as it works to develop a revised specification for the new qualification. The panel, which consists of ten expert members, is chaired by Professor Richard Craster, Professor of Applied Mathematics at Imperial College London.

During the current exploratory, consultative phase as it develops its thinking, the Mathematics Panel is gathering advice from a wide range of sources including:

University Mathematics Departments;

Heads of Department of Mathematical Sciences group (HoDoMS);

The Royal Statistical Society;

The Royal Computing Society;

Other professional bodies;

Awarding Organisations;

A level teachers.

The views of these organisations and individuals will help to shape the Panel's views on the aims of A Level Mathematics, the prescription of core material for the single A Level in Mathematics, and the content of A Level Further Mathematics. The panel is considering the relationship between A Level Mathematics and the related A Levels of Physics, Economics and Computer Science. The panel will also review the requirements for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for teachers arising from its recommendations.

Reporting activity

The Chair submitted a report to the Department for Education early in March 2014 summarising the Panel’s initial thinking and views on A Level content. Following further work and discussion, a report outlining the Panel’s emerging thinking was delivered to the department at the beginning of April.

The ALCAB Maths Panel will deliver its final report on content to the department and Ofqual early in June 2014. The report will be published in due course.
