MATH MANIPULATIVE EXERCISE Everyone make sure you grab 5 square blocks, 10 strips, and 10 small blocks! You will create the following numbers in your table groups with the math manipulative blocks. You will be working as a group, a team, a close-knit circle – you are not done until everyone in your group understands why you have used the blocks you’ve used!

MATH MANIPULATIVE EXERCISE

• Everyone make sure you grab 5 square blocks, 10 strips, and 10 small blocks!

• You will create the following numbers in your table groups with the math manipulative blocks.

• You will be working as a group, a team, a close-knit circle – you are not done until everyone in your group understands why you have used the blocks you’ve used!

17.92• Make sure you are using the proper blocks

to represent each part of the number!

21.09• Is it possible to create this number?• You may have to think about how are you

going to use your tenths blocks!

2.98• Make sure you are using the proper blocks

to represent each part of the number!

0.01• Make sure you are using the proper blocks

to represent each part of the number!

0.396• For this problem: treat the large square

blocks as tenths and go from there!• Make sure you are using the proper blocks

to represent each part of the number!

ADDING AND SUBTRACTING DECIMALS

• Adding and subtracting decimals works the exact same as regular addition and subtraction – you just need to make sure you are lining up the tenths, hundredth, thousandths, etc.

• If you are adding together hundredths and it comes to over ten, you carry the 1 up to the tenths place

• If you were subtracting 9 thousandths away from 4 thousandths, you’d have to break down the hundredths and carry over the 1 from there.

LET’S PRACTICE!• With your blocks – create the number 1.15

• Now with the blocks – add 0.5 to the original set

• How many do you have now?

• If you count them all up, you’ll see that you should have one large block, six tenths blocks, and five hundredths blocks to create the number 1.65

ADDITIONWith your blocks please add the following numbers:

• 2.34 + 1.1

• 0.9 + 3.12

• 4.01 + 0.06

• 1.1 + 0.89

SUBTRACTIONWith your blocks could you please subtract the

following numbers

• 2.34 - 1.1

• 3.12 - 0.9

• 4.11 - 0.06

• 1.19 - 0.89

GREATER, LESSER, OR EQUAL?

1. 19.09 19.092

2. 14.693 14.396

3. 8.010 8.01

4. 3.5879 5.001

5. 16.9 16.899

6. 1.01 + 1.3

7. 1.9 + 0.1

8. 4.78 – 1.1

9. 4.05 + 1.95

10. 2.99 + .33

GREATER, LESSER, OR EQUAL?

1. 19.09 < 19.092

2. 14.693 > 14.396

3. 8.010 = 8.01

4. 3.5879 < 5.001

5. 16.9 > 16.899

6. 1.01 + 1.3 = 2.31

7. 1.9 + 0.1 = 2.0

8. 4.78 – 1.1 = 3.68

9. 4.05 + 1.95 = 6.00

10. 2.99 + .33 = 3.32

ROUNDING DECIMALS• Now clearly mathematicians ALWAYS do everything the

easy way and rounding is no exception!

• When you look at a number with a decimal and you are checking to see if it should be rounded up or down, there are a few ways you can look at it!

1. If the number ends in 1, 2, 3, or 4 you will round DOWN!

2. If the number ends in 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 you will round UP!

Page 18: MATH MANIPULATIVE EXERCISE Everyone make sure you grab 5 square blocks, 10 strips, and 10 small blocks! You will create the following numbers in your table

ROUNDING DECIMALS• We can also look at this using the manipulatives…

• Create the number 1.3 with your blocks!

• Now if we wanted to round it to the nearest whole number (left side of the decimal point!) we have to ask…

• Is it easier to take away those 3 tenths blocks or is it easier to find, pick out, and place 7 more blocks?

• Unless you’re super strong like Mr. Bristow, taking the 3 blocks away is the easiest thing to do!

• We ROUND DOWN!
