Common Core Standards: What’s New, What’s Not• Standards Curriculum Materials Methods Assessment

• Not an abandonment of the old – rather a shift to promote greater understanding and achievement

• Children still learn to add and subtract whole numbers• Then multiply and divide• Then learn fractions• And fraction operations• Then decimals, exponents, positive and negative integers• Algebra• Geometry, etc.

“Toward Greater Focus and Coherence”• [M]athematics curriculum . . . must become

substantially more focused and coherent in order to improve mathematics achievement in this country. To deliver on the promise of common standards, the standards must address the problem of a curriculum that is “a mile wide and an inch deep.” • Mathematical understanding and procedural skill
