Hub students attend both lecture and Hub classes.

The Math Hub is a computer lab with ALEKS and MyMathLab software installed.

In the Hub, students work alone or with help from an instructor or tutor.

Help is also available in the Hub outside of class time.

Hub classes are modified self-paced.

Students may work at their own pace, but must finish the modules by due dates throughout the semester and the course by the last Hub time for their class.

To access ALEKS from the www.fdtc.edu website, click on Students in the top right hand corner, then click on ALEKS.

Put up the yellow HELP sign when you want the tutor or instructor to help with a question, start a test, etc. Someone will come as soon as possible. Continue to work on the problem or something else while you are waiting.

The pink TEST sign should be raised whenever you are taking a Knowledge Check or a Scheduled Assessment.

Page 6: MATH 031/032/101/102 Fall 2015 15 Week Term ALEKS

There are many people who are here to help you be successful in the Hub such as: Course Instructors, Tutors, Assistants, Work Study Students, Other Faculty, Math Department Chair.

Everyone that helps you in the Hub is assisting your instructor. They are to be treated with the same respect you give to your instructor.

Guests frequently visit the Hub and should also be respected.

Page 7: MATH 031/032/101/102 Fall 2015 15 Week Term ALEKS

The tutors in the Math Hub are assistants to your instructor. They are people with strong math abilities, but do not “have all the answers”.

Tutors are here to offer assistance, guidance and support, NOT to do the work for the student.

Students outnumber the tutors, so please be patient if you have a question. Raise the “HELP” flag on the computer monitor and continue working on a different exercise until a tutor can help.

The Math Hub does not offer private math tutoring.

“Assessment & Learning in Knowledge Spaces”

How Does ALEKS work???

Aleks is an individualized, adaptive learning tool that provides a constant cycle of learning and assessment based on each individual student’s learning rate.

Aleks uses artificial intelligence to determine what you know, what you do not know, and what you are ready to learn. Aleks will only allow you to work on topics that you are ready to learn.

Page 9: MATH 031/032/101/102 Fall 2015 15 Week Term ALEKS

Aleks will assess you in two ways. Knowledge Checks and Scheduled Assessments.Knowledge Checks – Are not password protected and can be completed anywhere. Aleks automatically assigns you Knowledge Checks when you complete 5 hours of work in Aleks or learn 20 objectives. Knowledge Checks do not affect your average but will affect the amount of work you have to do in your “pie”.Scheduled Assessments – Are password protected, must be completed in one sitting, and can only be taken in Hub class or the Hub Testing Room. They are assigned to you when you complete each module with 100%. Scheduled Assessments do affect your average and will also affect the amount of work you have to do in your “pie”.

Page 10: MATH 031/032/101/102 Fall 2015 15 Week Term ALEKS

The Initial Assessment is meant to be taken “cold turkey”….to see what you really know.

Do not try to beat the Knowledge Checks by doing a “little review”.

Even if you “beat” a Knowledge Check, you will not have a sufficient knowledge base to do future work and will not be prepared for the Scheduled Assessments.

Instead, let the Knowledge Check identify where you need to do work. Then spend your study time where you need it.

Page 11: MATH 031/032/101/102 Fall 2015 15 Week Term ALEKS

It is alright to choose the “I Don’t Know” button if you are doing a Knowledge Check and you do not know how to do a particular problem or problems.

When doing a Knowledge Check (without password) or when doing a Scheduled Assessment (password protected), you can NOT go back to previous problems. You can only work forward.

Page 12: MATH 031/032/101/102 Fall 2015 15 Week Term ALEKS

Electronic course management access code, graphing calculator and ear buds as listed on syllabus are required for the course.  Students who do not have the required materials and/or who are not enrolled in the approved electronic course management system by the end of the second Friday of the semester may be withdrawn by the instructor.

Note: A textbook is NOT required for this course. If you would like to purchase a color copy of the textbook, you can order a loose leaf three hole punched book through ALEKS for $15 (plus tax)…free shipping.

A calculator can be used for any exercises or tests, including the final exam for MAT 031, 032, 101, and 102.

A TI-83, 83+, 84, or 84+ is the required calculator for all four courses. TI-89, TI-92 and TI-Inspire are NOT allowed to be used on any test.

An Important Note about Calculators: A TI graphing calculator is required for this course.  Students are advised not to add any programs or applications to their graphing calculator.  It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that ALL added programs/applications have been removed. If your calculator has added programs/applications, ask your instructor about removing them. The use of added programs/applications is not allowed while testing and will be considered a violation of the college’s academic dishonesty policy.

***Math 101/102 students will be required to use the gold FDTC graphing calculator supplied by the Hub for out of class testing.***

Statistics have shown that the majority of students that do not complete 60% of their material with mastery by the 60% withdrawal date are not successful in completing all requirements by the end of the term. These students then receive a grade of “F” for the course. Therefore, the FDTC Mathematics Department strongly urges students to withdraw from the hub course if these minimum requirements have not been completed. A withdrawal at this point assigns a grade of “W” to the course which does not affect the student’s GPA. Math Hub students should have demonstrated MASTERY of the following material by the given w/d date. If the student has not completed these requirements, he/she will be urged to withdraw from the course.

COURSE Minimum Completion by October 28, 2015 031………………Modules 1, 2 and half of 3 032………………Modules 1, 2 and half of 3 101………………Modules 1, 2 and half of 3 102………………Modules 1, 2 and half of 3

Module #1: 9-10-15 Module #2: 10-8-15 Module #3: 11-15-15 Module #4: 12-3-15

Modules need to be completed on or before the dates listed above.

If you don’t complete your module by the due dates, your grades will reflect it and the work that was not completed in that module will roll over to the next module. Do not get behind and let your work spiral out of control!!!
