Welcome! Sign In and Points

• Be sure to sign in on an officer’s computer. Be sure to place your last name in column A, first name in column B, and your email.

• For every activity you participate in, you will receive a certain amount of points. These points will be used to determine how many times your name will be entered into the lottery for a prize at the end of the semester (this is done at the end of fall and you start over in the spring).

• Spring 2015 prize was $25 Amazon Gift Card.

Fellowships and Scholarships

• There are plenty of fellowships and scholarships out there! You just need to take the time to apply for them!

• There are graduate and undergraduate fellowships/scholarships available.

NSFGRFP

• National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program

• The fellowship supports the individual, not the research:• Stipend of $34,000 for a 12-month period• $12,000 cost of education allowance (you do not need to pay

the fees!)

• You are eligible to apply if:1. You are a U.S. Citizen2. Not enrolled in graduate school and will have adequate

preparation to attend graduate school in fall 2016, or Have not completed more than 12 months of a graduate program in a supported field of study (as of August 1st, 2015).

NSFGRFP

• What is the application like?• One Personal, Relevant Background and Future Goals

Statement (3 pages, including references).• One Graduate Research Plan (2 pages, including references).• Three letter of recommendation.• Must provide all the basic information about yourself and your

studies.• Before filling out application, make sure you know all of your previous

publications, presentations, honors, awards, and scholarships/fellowships.

• In “Other Experience”, not only add what jobs/research/internship/co-op experiences you have had, but also leadership positions on campus.

• Does not require a GRE score.

NSFGRFP

• How I approached the application process:• I read the solicitation all the way through. After reading, I found

out that I needed to focus on the NSF Merit Review Criteria:• Intellectual Merit• Broader Impacts• “Therefore, applicants must include separate statements on

Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts in their written statements in order to provide reviewers with the information necessary to evaluate the application with respect to both Criteria as detailed below. Applicants should include headings for Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts in their statements.”

• I found several websites and blogs of NSFGRFP fellows which gave a lot of great advice for the application process and statements. Check out UT’s very own Mallory Ladd: http://malloryladd.weebly.com/nsf-grfp-advice.html

NSFGRFP

• How did I choose who to write my letters of recommendation?• I chose my letter of recommendation writers based on the NSF Merit

Review Criteria: intellectual merit and broader impacts.• Dr. Pharr (research advisor, intellectual merit, could discuss my ability

to perform quality research and advance knowledge)• Dr. Mandrus (professor for MSE 514, intellectual merit, could discuss

how well I performed in the classroom)• Dr. Rawn (broader impacts, could discuss how I have mentored young

students in science and introduced women to science)• I did not know how their letters turned out, but that is how I chose my

writers. I could have asked my undergraduate research advisor, but it had been a year since I had worked with him and I thought it would be best to ask those professors who I have had recent interactions with to write my letters. Obviously, everyone is different and you must do what you think is best for you!

NSFGRFP• Quick Key Information:

• Program Solicitation: http://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?WT.z_pims_id=6201&ods_key=nsf15597

• Engineering/Materials Research Deadline: October 27th, 2015• Reference letters due November 5th, 2015• Apply online: http://nsfgrfp.org/

• Quick tip: in the statements, be sure to state HOW the NSFGRFP will help you SUCCED in your graduate studies (do you need support to do research out side of the country, how will you utilize the resources)

• If you do anything related with ORNL, SAY IT! They like to see you discuss your resources and connections with places like ORNL.

• In your statements, bold/underline/italicize important points.• Try to tie your statements together with a common topic or show you have done

something in the past that has prepared you to perform well in graduate studies and research,

• I do not mind helping anyone through the process!• You can ask me to read my statements as a hard copy, but I do not feel comfortable

with submitting them electronically (I do not want them on someone’s website or blog).
