Materials List for ENG1055L Communicating & Understanding 3D Forms (aka 3D Comms) Paper A3 Bleedproof marker paper. Good brands are Letraset, Frisk, Goldline etc. A pad of A3 Cartridge paper. Pencils You will need a range of graphite pencils for drawing: 2H, HB, 2B, 4B etc. Softer drawing pencils and charcoal/conte pencils will also be used for some sessions. Crayons You will also need a range of coloured pencils. These should be soft. It is essential is that you have a good stock of Black and White crayons. The best brand used to be Berol Karisma Color (also known as Prisma Color), but these are no longer imported into UK (unless you know different!). An excellent alternative is Derwent ColourSoft. Avoid cheapo Tesco-style Value specials. Gouache A Pentel correction pen is really useful for simple highlights in rendering. Tippex is an adequate replacement. White gouache and a brush will give better results, but is not as handy. A set of coloured water based gouache or acrylic paints are also needed. Markers Initially, a basis range of colours (red, blue green) would be useful. Perhaps more important is a range of greys. Cool Grey is a colder colour used for metals etc. Warm Grey is a warmer colour used for rubber/plastic etc. In the first instance a lighter and darker version of either warm or cool will suffice eg C3 and C7 or W3 and W7, for example. the best brands are: ChartPak Ad Markers (for broad areas of colour)- £3-£4 each, Letraset Tria

Materials List for ENG1055L Communicating & Understanding3D Forms (aka 3D Comms)

Paper A3 Bleedproof marker paper. Good brands are Letraset, Frisk, Goldline etc.

A pad of A3 Cartridge paper. Pencils You will need a range of graphite pencils for drawing: 2H, HB, 2B, 4B

etc.

In the first instance a lighter and darker version of either warm or cool will suffice eg C3 and C7 or W3 and W7, for example.

the best brands are: ChartPak Ad Markers (for broad areas of colour)- £3-£4 each, Letraset Tria - £6 each or Pro Markers - £2-£3 (for more intricate work)Other possibles in addition, include: Kurecolor, Edding. Avoid Magic Markers.

Pastels Pastels should match the tone and hue of the marker, which – in reality – means that they need to be a couple of tones darker (they look lighter on paper once they are scraped down). Buy to match markers, plus a mid-dark blue for sky tones and a black

Rembrandt pastels are the best. In general, avoid square bodied pastels as they tend to be quite hard. Avoid cheapo Tesco-style Value specials. Do not buy OIL pastels, these are completely different.

Charcoal will also be used for some drawing sessions, as will white/grey/black conte pastels

Erasers Use plastic erasers, rather than rubber based art erasers. Mars Plastic by Staedler are excellent. You will constantly be cutting them up, so get a few! We only use erasers for pastel work, NOT for rubbing out drawings!

Pads These are used to lay pastel down on the paper. Make up pads from Boots or Superdrug will suffice

Spraymount Used to stick work down. Use 3M. Avoid cheapo Tesco-style Value specials.

Talcum Talc is used to smooth the paper before applying pastel and to mix with pastel. Any unscented baby powder will do.

Fixative If all you want to do is stop your drawings from rubbing off, then cheap fixative or even hair spray will do. If you want professional automotive renderings, ONLY Letraset 103 Matt Fixative will suffice (approx £8 per tin)

Sundry There are other items that will come in useful: a Swann Morton scalpel (with a No. 11 blade), a pencil sharpener with a container to hold the sharpenings (WH Smith or similar).

Templates Ellipse and circle templates are worth investing in if you intend to become a serious automotive designer (£100 - £200 per set). We have these for Studio use, so don’t worry too much about these. Sweeps and French curves are also useful. A simple set of French curves can be found in WHS or similar for £3-£4, but a set of sweeps £10-£20 from the internet are far superior.

This year we are experimenting with the idea of supplying Media packs of essentialitems. this is not for profit, but simply to ensure the correct materials are sourced.
