WHAT IS MATERET MAGISTRA?[ ]
• An encyclical that explores the role of the church and efforts to achieve social progress and justice in the world
• “Mother and Teacher”– refers to the role of the church– describes a necessity to work
towards authentic community in order to promote human dignity
Pope John XXIII– wrote the encyclical
and promulgated it on May 15, 1961
– Pope from October 28, 1958 to June 3, 1968
CONTEXT OFMATER ET MAGISTRA[ ]
Millions of people live in poverty in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Advancements such as space exploration, automation, nuclear energy and improved communication technologies pose new problems for industrialized nations.
Multiplication of social relationships; this socialization is both a symptom and a cause of growing public intervention in aspects of personal life.
• Workers earn little money while others have huge incomes from performing less important and less useful tasks.
• People don’t have the right to property or individual freedom.
Unindustrialized countries need assistance. Wealthier nations are asked to provide help for poorer nations.

1. A balance in the common good
2. Focus on agriculture
3. The human person is the focus
4. A just distribution of wealth
5. Private property is a natural right and encourages workers to organize to secure a just wage
6. Countries should become more independent and should cooperate more closely
7. Individuals are the foundation, cause, and end of all social institutions and it cannot be separated from the church's traditional teaching regarding human life
8. Governments are to ensure that everyone has access to essential public services, including roads, transport, communications, water, housing with modern installations, health services, elementary through to professional education, religious and recreational facilities
