Gather items that will help your child calm down and make the
transition to sleep. The items can be part of an already established
routine such as a toothbrush, comb, soap, washcloth, and so on. A
familiar book and perhaps eye pillows could be included. Prior to
beginning the routine each evening, begin by dimming the lights for a
nonverbal signal that it will soon be bedtime. Use a soft voice and if
anyone is watching TV, that person should turn it down. As you work
through the box the items can be returned to the box or “put to bed.”
