INQUIRING MINDS: Q&A WITH SRFC PLAYERS

DEREK FORAN

1. What animal is your spirit animal and why?I’d have to say French bulldog because they’re cute and dangerous.

2. Describe your skincare routine living under the California sun.I marinate in sunblock lotion before every training.

3. If you could join any band, who would it be?One Direction for obvious reasons.

4. Who is your hero and why?Cameron Iwasa.

5. What do you have for breakfast?Cement and barbed wire because I’m so hard.

CAMERON IWASA

1. If you could live in a book, TV show or movie what would it be?I’d love on the planet in Wall-E, in leisure all the time.

2. What is your go-to karaoke song?It depends on the mood. Something Chris Brown, upbeat and fun.

3. Describe your perfect date. Something like dinner and a movie.

4. If you could speak another language what would it be and why?I would like to speak Japanese. My grandpa spoke and my brother took four years in high school, so he kind of understands it. I went to Japan when I was 14 and I couldn’t understand a thing, so I’d love to go back there and speak the language.

5. The zombie apocalypse has started, which teammates would be most likely and least likely to survive?Least likely to survive would absolutely be Emrah. He’d be too worried about what he looked like and wouldn’t be down to get dirty. Most likely would be the Dominator (Dominik Jakubek). Absolutely.

With the 23-man squads finalized for each country, the countdown to this year’s historic

Copa America Centenario is rapidly reaching zero. Northern California is eagerly putting together the final pieces for the event, which will bring eyes from around the world to Levi’s Stadium starting June 3.

The U.S. Men’s National Team will open the historic Copa America Centenario on June 3 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., when they face Colombia. Kickoff time is 6:30 p.m.

This year’s Copa America is unique in that it marks the 100th anniversary of tournament, also the sport’s oldest international contest. Sixteen national teams and 32 matches will take place in ten different venues across the United States from June 3-26. It is the first time the tournament will be hosted outside of South America.

In all, ten COMMEBOL and six CONCACAF teams will compete in this year’s tournament. The United States is seeded in Group A alongside Colombia, Costa Rica and Paraguay. Brazil, Peru, Haiti and

Ecuador make up Group B, while Mexico, Jamaica, Uruguay and Venezula round out Group C. Lastly, Argentina leads Group D, which also features Chile, Panama and Bolivia.

As expected, even with World Cup qualifiers and the Rio Summer Olympics, countries competing in this year’s Copa America are bringing rosters packed with international talent to the stateside tournament. At Copa America, soccer fans will have the chance to see stars like Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal), Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Douglas Costa

(Bayern Munich) and Keylor Navas (Real Madrid). Two San Jose Earthquakes players—Chris

Wondolowski and Simon Dawkins—will also be representing Northern California while appearing in this year’s tournament. Dawkins will represent Jamaica, while veteran Wondolowski returns to represent the United States.

Wondolowski joins the United States final 23-man roster, which features a combination of players from MLS and oversees. The final roster

includes, Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Colorado Rapids), Ethan Horvath (Molde IK), Matt Besler (Sporting KC), Steve Birnbaum (D.C. United), John Brooks (Hertha Berlin), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Timmy Chandler (Eintracht Frankfurt), Fabian Johnson (Borussia Monchengladbach), Michael Orozco (Club Tijuana), DeAndre Yedlin (Tottenham Hotspur), Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (FC Nantes), Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders FC), Jermaine Jones (Colorado Rapids), Perry Kitchen (Heart of Midlothian), Darlington Nagbe (Portland Timbers), Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes), Bobby Wood (Hamburg SV), Gyasi Zardes (LA Galaxy) and Graham Zusi (Sporting KC).

Among the ten venues hosting this year’s celebration is Levi’s Stadium, the home of the San Francisco 49ers. Located in Santa Clara, California, Levi’s Stadium was designed by HNTB, the same architectural firm hired to design Sacramento Republic FC’s MLS stadium at The Railyards. HNTB designed the Levi’s Stadium with events such as Copa America and the Superbowl in mind to ensure it was a world-class facility for more than just the 49ers games.

In addition to the U.S. Men’s National Team vs. Colombia match on June 3, other matches at Levi’s Stadium include Argentina vs. Chile (June 6), Uruguay vs. Jamaica (June 13) and a quarterfinal match on June 18.

On Copa America matchdays at Levi’s Stadium, match attendees, fans and visitors are invited to experience the pre-match festivities at the Copa America Centenario Fan Plaza, located outside of the stadium. The Fan Plaza, which opens four and half hours before kickoff, features giveaways, food and drinks and other activities.

Apart from the four matches and pre-match activities at Levi’s Stadium, Copa America fans also have a chance to celebrate the once-in-a-lifetime tournament, at Copa America Centenario FanHQ presented by Sprint at San Pedro Square Market on June 2, 4 and 5.

FanHQ admission is free and will feature live music, food, drinks, activities and other Copa America matches on video screens. Republic FC’s own promo crew will be at the FanHQ with giveaways and other prizes.

Josefina and Greg Walker were expecting, but their pregnancy came with a surprise – identical twins sharing a single amniotic sac. The babies were at risk for severe complications, including the possibility that one might not survive. Doctors transferred Josefina to UC Davis, where a team of fetal health experts monitored mother and twins for 45 days, successfully delivering Isabella and Sofia on Leap Day at just 32 weeks. The girls continued their development in the UC Davis Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit’s Level IV nursery and today these rare twins – born on the rarest of days – are both healthy and home.

An extra-special delivery.

This past March, Republic FC Academy midfielder Greysen Garber received a call up to the Guam Boys U-14s National Team, becoming one of the seven Republic FC Academy players to-date to be called up for international duty.

So far in Republic FC Academy’s inaugural season in the U.S Development Academy, three countries have called up various Republic FC players to the youth ranks of their respective national teams. The United States National Team has the biggest representation in the Republic FC Academy with five call-ups among the U-14s, U-16s and U-18s teams. Republic FC U-18s defender Mackenzie Harrington has represented Canada at the U-18 level and Garber rounds out the international presence with his Guam youth team call-up earlier this year.

Garber has been a key player for Republic FC Academy’s U-13/14 side during their inaugural season. Since September, the 14-year-old midfielder has made 18 appearances and nine starts. A product of the San Juan Soccer Academy, Garber scored his first and only goal so far this season in a 5-2 win over Merced Atlas Soccer Academy on Saturday, November 14, 2015.

Garber joined the Guam Boys U-14s National Team for the 2016 Jockey Club International Youth Invitational held in Hong Kong from March 26 through March 29. The annual international tournament, organized by the Hong Kong Football Association, took place in Hong Kong’s Po Kong Village Road Park Artificial Turf Football Pitch and featured two age divisions, U-14s and U-17s.

Guam’s U-14 team had a tough tournament against its counterparts of Hong Kong, Chinese Tapei and Singapore. In three matches Guam was unable to find a win, with the only goal for the team coming from Guam U-14s captain Kyle Halehale against Hong Kong. For his part, Garber played two full matches, one against Hong Kong and the other against Chinese Tapei.

Despite the losses, Guam’s performance in the tournament was an improvement from their showing last year at the EAFF U13 Boys Festival of Football, cutting the deficits from the team’s losses in the 2015 East Asia Football Federation Boy’s U-13s Festival of Football.

Garber’s brother Devin Garber was also called up to the Guam youth national team, albeit to the U-17s squad. The elder Garber plays locally for El Dorado Hills Soccer Club and attends Jesuit High School.

Led by former MLS player and New Zealand international Simon Elliott, the U-14s have made a big impact in the U-13/14s division of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, with a record of 17-4-3. There are no playoffs or official rankings in the U-13/14s division, although Republic FC’s 13/14s will attend a National Showcase in June to cap off their season.

Republic FC’s Academy teams have just two matches left in the regular season before playoffs kick off. The U-17/18s and the U-15/16s will host Strikers FC and Seattle Sounders FC on May 28 and June 4, respectively, at Cosumnes River College. Kickoff is 10 am for the U-17/18s and 12:30 p.m. for the U-15/16s on both match days. The U-13/14s will be on the road on May 28 against their Marin FC Alliance counterparts, and then will return to Cosumnes River College to finish off the regular season against EBU Bay Oaks on June 4. Kickoff is 3:00 p.m.

There is an essential tie between a pint and a pitch. The pub is the last port of call before passing through the turnstiles, and the haven to head to when the final whistle is blown. For generations, it has been the place to predict and then replay the highs and lows, the thrills and spills. The pub is where heroes and hero-worshipers mingle; a gathering place for supporters to cheer on nations and chant against rivals.

“For soccer, or football as most of our fans call it, there’s a social aspect to the sport,” said VP of Marketing and Communications Erika Bjork. “You go to the pub and meet up with your friends and family, and you have a pint, and then you go to the pitch. As a club, we’ve offered opportunities to bring this tradition into the experience in Sacramento.”

With over 20 different beer labels available throughout Bonney Field, Republic FC has been fermenting its relationship with local breweries throughout the club’s existence. Fans can grab their favorite bottled imports including Tecate or Heinken or visit the craft brew stand for over a dozen craft brews on tap including local favorites. The Market Bier Garden is also open after each Repub-lic FC match for fans to enjoy a post-match pint with a little live music on the side.

In March, Republic FC was once again the proud presenting partner at the region’s annual Sac-ramento Beer Week. The event showcases local breweries throughout the week, with many brew-eries and Sacramento-area restaurants hosting events such as food and beer pairings, discounts on local brews and tap takeovers.

“This is the beer mecca of California,” said Rubicon Brewing Company Owner Glynn Phillips. “There are a lot of places making good beer throughout California. But Sacramento, we’re right in the middle. We’re right in the middle of everything.”

With over 40 breweries calling the Sacramento region home, the connection between Republic FC and local beer makes total sense.

“The experience and the comradery and the celebratory nature of beer and soccer is huge,” said Farm to Fork Director Nicole Rogers. “Our beer scene and our athletic scene as a whole is moving in a really good direction.”

The relationship between the pint and the pitch can be seen not only here in Sacramento, but all over the world. When hard times hit English Premier League club Manchester United, then called Newton Health, in the early 1900’s, it was a local brewery owner named John Henry Davies who

came to the club’s rescue. He invested in the club to ease its financial troubles and led the name change from Newton Health to Manchester United FC.

Another EPL club, Liverpool FC and it’s home, Anfield, also have major ties to breweries. The club was founded by Liverpool mayor and local brewer John Houlding in 1892. After Everton FC left Anfield, Houlding decided to put the empty field to good use and formed Liverpool FC, moving the team into the now historic stadium. Anfield itself was originally opened by John Orell, another local Liverpool brewer, who was behind the founding of Everton FC.

“Beer is a lot like soccer in that soccer is the every person’s sport and beer is the every person’s drink,” said LowBrau Bierhall Co-Owner Clay Nutting. “It brings people together and its exciting.”

Republic FC has benefited greatly from the emerging local brewery scene in the California capi-tal; local breweries embody the same soul and swagger that the club celebrates.

In addition, local pubs are known to host Republic FC and other footy watch parties. It is not that uncommon to see various bars at 6 a.m. exuding chants and hanging club flags as local supporters gather. The club has an official premiere pub partner in de Vere’s Irish Pub in Midtown Sacramento that also hosts the local supporter clubs of Liverpool FC and Arsenal.

“Football and pints are about as Irish as St. Patrick’s Day and shepherds pie,” said de Vere’s Irish Pub Founder Henry de Vere. “It’s been overwhelming to see Sacramento embrace what we love most – beer and football.”
