As I See It....By Jim Lee

Opportunity 2021

This past August the APS StampShow was held in Columbus, Ohio. This was the first annual show to fire on most all cylinders in probably the last

five years. Better marketing plan, hard work, strong local organizing committee and above all “location, location, location” made it all work. The last factor will next bubble up again in August of 2021 at Chicago.

There are several factors that make Chicago an unbelievable opportunity. It has always been a strong major show location, witness Ameripex ’86 and World Columbian in 1992. There is a show committee with decades of experience. The ANA is meeting in the same venue, at the same time as the APS. This will present incredible cross over opportunities. The best however, is that this show comes at the midpoint between New York 2016 and Boston 2026.

StampShow 2021, in Chicago provides the perfect launching vehicle for the Boston show five years later. If it becomes a five-day show, instead of four, it can be run as a mini-international with dealers and exhibiters recruited from Europe giving both the opportunity to test out their stocks and exhibits. The focus of the show can be built around a large super booth right up front which serves to promote Boston ’26. It gives them the opportunity to recruit dealers, volunteers, exhibitors, and collectors. They can even sell hotel rooms.

First let me tackle the proverbial elephant in the room. There is a school of thought that says a mini-international show held in Chicago will take away from Boston 2026 which is one way to look at it. However, Chicago can be a catalyst for Boston, a slingshot to provide a build up for the next 10 year international. This has never been done before so let’s look at the benefits that could accrue going forward with this idea.

The quality show dealer population is shrinking because of age and the growth of the Internet as a product delivery system. Why not look at the cross over benefit of partnering with not just the American Numismatic Association, but also bring in the Ephemera Society and the Manuscript Society. Each could provide additional collectors, dealers and exhibits. Let each provide their own court of honor.

The caliber of show that I am proposing could also serve as an opportunity to bring in foreign postal administrations and thus the chance to interest them in the

Boston show. A secondary benefit would be to use the show to launch an all-out effort to attract those postal administrations, not attending Chicago, to come to 2026. This provides a five-year head start on that portion of the show. The large number of postal administrations at Ameripex ’86 and Washington 2006 really helped to provide critical mass for those shows.

Potential exhibitors will have the opportunity to test their exhibits against international judging criteria. Thus, giving them another five years to fine tune their exhibits.

It gives the Boston organizing committee the opportunity to fine tune their skill set in real time by involving them in the show. Most importantly, there will be plenty of collectors to recruit as volunteers. This is the absolute life blood of any show.

It provides a real time opportunity to meet with the decision makers of the United States Postal Service, in a show setting, to discuss ways to meet their needs for Boston. Their theme, booth, and location in Columbus was an outstanding addition and greatly contributed to the overall energy of the show.

Most importantly there is the fund-raising opportunity. It takes a lot of money to stage an international. What better place to cultivate financial patrons for 2026. Give Boston additional space to meet with potential patrons.

Dealers are a second source of capital for funding a major international show. It is an opportunity to sell the booths. Identify and mentor those smaller dealers needed for 2026. The American Stamp Dealers Association can play a major role in the process.

I have just covered some of the major items for expanding StampShow 2021 and providing Boston 2026 with a significant boost! It would be a shame to waste this one in a lifetime opportunity.
