Dear Parent or Guardian,
A Grief Counseling group is going to be offered for those that wish to participate in a group counseling experience at
Matapeake Middle School. The group will meet bi-weekly over an eight week timespan. Our start date will be
February 26th and run to May 27th during your child’s 3rd period class (Note: students will receive and excused
absence for the period they attend group and will be responsible for obtaining any missed work from this class.).
During these sessions, your child will have the opportunity to address feelings of loss & grief while developing coping
strategies that may help them improve their perceptions. The group will be led by Mrs. Rhonda Knotts, a grief support
coordinator and director of Camp New Dawn here in Queen Anne’s County. Mrs. Knotts has led many of these groups
both in and out of the school setting and comes to us with a reputable background with working with students at this
age. I will be overseeing the group and attend sessions as needed. Attached is a general overview of the topics you
child will work with during the sessions. The topics and amount of time spent on them may vary based upon the needs
of the group members.
Because the counselor-student relationship is based on trust, the group leaders and the members of the group will keep
the information shared in each of the sessions confidential, except in situations where there is an ethical responsibility
to break the confidentiality agreement. These would include the following:
If a child reveals information to the leader that he or she intends to do harm to themselves or another person.
If the child reveals information about child abuse.
If the counselor’s records and notes are subpoenaed by the courts.
If you have any questions, please contact Mr. France at 410-643-7330. I think this is a wonderful opportunity for
students look for assistance with this common topic in our lives. We look forward to working with your child!
Please fill out the bottom portion of the form and return it with your child to Mr. France’s office by February 23rd,
2016.
By signing below I give my informed consent for my child to participate in the bi-weekly group counseling sessions
taking place at Matapeake Middle School between February 26, 2009 and May 27th and understand that:
The group will provide my child with the opportunity to address feelings of loss and grief, develop coping
strategies, and share ideas with other peers facing a similar experiences.
Anything that the members of the group share with the rest of the group will be kept confidential and will not
be shared with others unless pertaining to the situations mentioned above.
Students will be given an excused, legal absence for the sessions they attend. However, your child will
responsible for obtaining any missed work in their class.

This month……… Which do you prefer using during school; Chromebooks or paper? Chromebooks- Chromebooks are better because it is easier
to research and find information on them for school work. Also, Chromebooks save paper and are eco-friendly. Not to mention, they can be easier and faster to work with. Papers can get lost, and can cause an unorganized binder. Chromebooks, on the other hand, digitally organize all your work and files, making it easier to keep track of all your schoolwork. Plus, with Chromebooks, it’s easier to turn work in; you can turn it in or email it to your teacher at home or other places with wifi, and you don’t need to be at school to do it. And if you miss days of school, it’s easier to get the work you missed because it’s all online. Another bonus of Chromebooks is some students can type faster than they write, so they can do their work more efficiently using computers. Not to mention, we all know that towards the end of the year, there is almost always a paper and pencil shortage, Chromebooks help eliminate that problem. Finally, in the real world, technology is being used more commonly, so it is good to have computer experience.
Paper- Paper is better because it is easier and simple. Paper
is more reliable; Chromebooks die, break, don’t work, etc. Chromebooks depend on many things. A Chromebook might not be charged, the wifi may not be working, or it could break, making it unusable. And the MMS wifi is often not working, making it hard to proceed with class since most lessons are now online. Also, it’s important for students to practice writing and spelling skills. Nowadays, technology seems to do everything for people, and sometimes that not’s good. Plus, some students are distracted by their Chromebooks, and are playing games instead of doing work. Also, if a student is going on vacation or will be away, it’s easier to have their work on paper. It’s harder to carry around a Chromebook and there’s not wifi everywhere. Plus, any student whose Chromebook has broken knows if a student’s Chromebook breaks (even if it’s not their fault) then they miss out on class lessons, class work, and they really have nothing to do until they get a loaner. Also, looking at screens all day can hurt students’ eyes or cause headaches.

This year is leap year on February, 29! This year
will have 366 days instead of 365 days in a year. Most
people don’t know why we actually have a leap year.
A leap year occurs every 4 years to synchronize the
calendar with the solar year, or the amount of time
it takes Earth to make its complete orbit around the
sun. A person's chances of being born on a leap day
is about 1 in 1,500. There are about 4 million people
in the world that are born on a leap day. The
Egyptians were among the first to know that we
needed a leap year, but we didn’t start having a leap
year until Roman dictator Julius Caesar came along.
The next 5 leap years include 2020, 2024, 2028, 2032,
and 2036. Most years that are evenly divisible by 4
are leap years. So would 2152 be a leap year?
…...Yes, it would because it is evenly divisible by 4.

Groundhog Day By: Jordan H.
The second of February every year a
groundhog pops out of the ground and his
shadow tells us if we will have six more
weeks of winter or not. And people are
wondering how accurate he really is.
Over the years, the groundhog had predicted
99 forecasts of more winter and 15 forecasts
of an early spring. But according to the Storm
fax Almanac, the groundhog has the
groundhog has only been right for about 39%
of the time.
Since 1887, there has been 102 records of
the groundhog having a shadow, 7 unrecorded
years, and only 17 records of the groundhog
not having a shadow (1890, 1902, 1934, 1943,
1950, 1970, 1975, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1990,
1995, 1997, 1999, 2007, 2011, and 2013) and
in 1995, the groundhog was a guest on the
Oprah Winfrey Show.
Many people are saying that there is usually
a shadow because of the lights people shine
on the groundhog to get it live on TV and
people taking pictures of the groundhog, but
some of the recent years he hasn’t had a
shadow with the light shining on him, so
nobody can tell for sure.
This year, the groundhog did not see his
shadow, so it will hopefully be an early spring.
Although, we won’t completely know for sure
or not if he was correct until, well, spring!
Black History Month By: Connor M. & Jacob G.
Black history month began in 1915 which was half
a century after the 13th amendment, which stopped
slavery in the US, was put into effect. Black history
month is an annual celebration of important
achievements of African Americans in the US. A
man by the name of Carter G. Woodson and the
prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the
Association for the Study of Negro Life and History.
This organization was dedicated to researching and
promoting the achievements that black Americans
and people of African descent have accomplished.
They chose the second week of February for Negro
History Week which happened to be the birthdays of
Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas. Decades
later the United States started recognizing Negro
History Week. Thanks in part to the civil rights
movement and a growing awareness of African-
American identity, Negro History Week evolved
into Black History Month on many college
campuses. Other countries such as UK and Canada
also have a Black History Month to recognize the
achievements of African-American people.
Abraham Lincoln By: Jessica S.
Abraham Lincoln is a person of significance when it
comes to America’s history. Born on February 12th,
1809, he had very humble beginnings starting in
Kentucky and later Indiana and Illinois. In 1930,
Abraham had worked in manual labor until the Black
Hawk War broke out between Americans and Native
Americans. This is when volunteers in the area elected
Abraham to be their captain. Even though he was never
in combat, becoming their captain gained him a few
important political connections. After the war is when his
political career started. Starting off as an Illinois state
legislator, he wasn’t in the legislative branch for long
before he became interested in law. He had been a lawyer
before briefly serving in the U.S. House of
Representatives, and then went back to being a lawyer.
Abraham had served as a lawyer until 1854 when he was
elected as president. As president, he did many
remarkable things including freeing the slaves and
making multiple remarkable speeches. He’s remembered
as one of America’s biggest heroes. He died from
assassination during his presidency during April 14th,
1865.

Welcome to MMS Mrs. Boffemmyer, our new
Guidance secretary.
Q: What are some things that you like about Matapeake Middle School?
A: I love that everyone has been so welcoming with me coming here mid-year. All of the staff and students have such good school spirit, it has rubbed off on me.
Q: Which schools have you worked previously?
A: I worked at Stevensville Middle School for about 9 years, then Kent Island High School for 3 ½ years.
Q: What hobbies/activities do you like to do in your free time?
A: I love spending time with my family, crossword puzzles, trivia games, anything to keep my brain moving!
Q: What are you most excited for this rest of this year?
A: I am most excited about being able to come into my office and have smiling faces surrounding me each and every day! Whether it be students who are currently with us that I haven’t gotten to meet yet, the ones that I do know, or new students and their families that have just moved into our area that have decided to become a part of our Matapeake Middle School family!
Q: What is your favorite book?
A: I’m not much of a book reader myself, I prefer magazines and articles, but I have read, and I love it every time, “T’was Night Before Christmas” with my nieces and nephews every year, and each time I just love how their faces light up!
Q: What is your favorite food?
A: I love chicken! It can be made 6,873 different ways! (Random number, but it sounds pretty accurate to me :)
This Day in History… Tutankhamen’s Tomb
By: Taylor P.
On February 16, 1923, in Thebes, Egypt, Howard Carter, an archaeologist, enters the sealed burial chamber of King Tutankhamen, the ancient Egyptian pharaoh. Pharaohs were thought of by the Egyptians as gods, and treated with great respect. After death, their bodies were mummified to be preserved for hundreds of years and buried in extensive and decorated tombs, including treasures to go with the pharaohs to the afterlife. Many archaeologists came to Egypt in the 1800’s to uncover these tombs, but many had already been discovered by robbers and their valuables taken. When Howard Carter came to Egypt in 1891, he was convinced that there was at least one undiscovered tomb to be found, and that it was of King Tutankhamen, known more commonly as King Tut. He lived around 1400 B.C., and died when he was still a teenager.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Continued from page 1
This month we not only asked the students for their opinion
but the staff as well. 144 students responded and 17 staff
responded. Of the students that responded 71.7% said they
preferred Chromebooks and 28.3% said paper. Of the staff that
responded 52.9% said Chromebooks and 47.1% said paper.
Here are some of the things the staff and students said;
“Google Docs is a lot more organized than an overflowing
binder" –Student
"It is easier to memorize things when you write it instead of
typing it. This is scientifically proven.”- Student
"I prefer using paper because when we use paper it allows us to
practice our writing, and spelling skills. When we use paper we
also do not have to worry about wifi, or computer not turning
on, or charging our Chromebooks."
- Staff
“Chromebooks give us so many more options for how to teach
and learn! There are definitely some things that are just better
on paper (I still love drawing), but with Chromebooks it is much
easier to gather and apply knowledge in new ways.” - Staff

Xenophobia By Taylor P.
Xenophobia is the intense dislike or fear of people from other countries, races, or religions. This is very commonly seen today and is appearing more and more as there are many debates about letting Syrian refugees into the country as well as changing our Mexican border security. What has caused a large population of Americans to have xenophobia is ISIS terrorist attacks, which are done by extremist Muslims. However, what people tend to forget is that the Muslim population in the world is over 1.6 billion, and that not all of them are extremists and terrorists, and that they are normal people just like us. The same is for some illegal Mexican immigrants. Of course, not all people are good, but you cannot judge an entire group as bad. In Mexico, a lot of the time, people illegally immigrate to America to escape from poverty and crime in the cities to get a better life in America, but all they get is judgment. We must end this xenophobia and treat all races and religions as equals. There are bad people in all religions and races, as there are good, and the good often exceeds the bad.

Induction Ceremony By: Kristi L.
On January 13, MMS held their annual National Junior Honor Society Induction Ceremony. For this chapter of MMS’s NJHS, there were a total of twenty-three inductees, bringing the total to forty-three members. NJHS members must hold true to the principles for which it stands, as well as maintain and encourage high standards in all areas of expertise, including scholarship, service, leadership, citizenship and character. Maddie Taylor, current President of NJHS, says, “I am thoroughly excited for the new members of NJHS to join our chapter. I look forward to hear their ideas to better our school and community.” Each member must complete at least ten hours of community service each year and attend every scheduled meeting. Good luck to all new NJHS members.
Travel Journal: Italy By: Zoe Q.
I have only been to Italy once, and that was for a weekend, which was one day. So I don’t know much about, so I’m on this adventure into the pasta loving culture of Italy with you guys!! And since Stalkin- I mean Valentine's Day (hehe) is just around the corner I looked up the most romantic country, and it was Italy, not France.
Actually, Italy is widely known as a perfect destination for lovers. Art cities, islands, beaches, lake towns, hidden corners and abandoned cities are all wonderful places to visit with your significant others. I don’t know so much about the abandoned cities, but the hidden corners sound fun!
Some of you may be thinking, “What about Venice?!” Again, I have only been there once, and the boat ride on The Grand Canal was a bit rocky. And I thought I was going to fall into the water. But the “City of Water” is very pretty and not all water. The shops that line the sides of the streets and at the ends of bridges have very beautiful jewelry and very elaborate masquerade masks and GIGANTIC masquerade gowns.
Speaking of which…
Masquerade balls were in 16th century Renaissance Italy. They were generally fancy dances held for the upper class, and were very popular in Venice. And are usually held during the Venetian Carnival. This event is held right before Christians Lent.
Now onto everyone’s favorite topic: FOOD! Some main Italian dishes include Mushroom-Sausage Ragu and Tuscan Tomato Bread Soup with Steamed Mussels. And, ladies, if you want to be a real Italian girl you must drink Camomile Tea, which is amazing. And, men, don’t do anything because Italians a crazy friendly and people might get uncomfortable.
But all in all, the place is very lively and considering the inhabitants, a pretty happy place. I totally recommend going there. http://www.lifeinitaly.com/Travel_in_Italy/Romantic_Italy%3A_the_right_destinations_for_couples http://www.wonderslist.com/top-10-most-romantic-nationalities-in-the-world/

Q&A with Dr. Holocker By Emma V.
Learn about her thoughts on the past and present
semester
1. How did you think the first semester went?
I think the first semester went rather well. It went fast,
but well. From looking at the first and second marking
period grades, everyone is working hard! We have the
best kids in the county here at MMS and all you have to
do is walk through the halls and see how well everyone
is doing.
2. What are some things we can look forward to in the
second semester?
Sixth grade’s big event this semester will be
NorthBay. For those of you who have gone, you should
share your experience with a 6th grader to get them
excited. Eighth grade will have a lot of things to look
forward to this spring. They will have the 8th grade
dance, the 8th grade trip to Six Flags and the Transition
Ceremony. This will be an exciting time as they prepare
to leave us and move on to the high school. Seventh
Grade can look forward to finishing up and getting
ready to be the leaders in the building. As a whole, we
have a lot of things planned for everyone that will be fun.
We will have our Annual Relay for Life event in May as
well as our PBIS Field Day. Plus some surprises along
the way ;)
3. What are some of the things you think we can
improve in this next semester?
The one main thing I would LOVE for everyone to do
this coming semester is to take better care of the
Chromebooks. Mrs. B reports to me periodically and it
upsets me to see so many careless damages to the
Chromebooks. Remember, these are not your
Chromebooks these are the property of the school. I am
lending them to you for you to use. The ultimate way for
you to show respect to me is to respect the property I am
lending you for instruction. If you have pictures, music
or even worse, games downloaded on your Chromebook,
they need to be removed IMMEDIATELY. I will start
doing random checks of the Chromebooks and I expect
it to only have your class materials on them. Also, the
Chromebook bags should have NOTHING in them
except your Chromebook and Charger. NOTHING
ELSE. If you put books and things in your bag, you
increase the risk of putting pressure on the computer
case and cracking the screen. So please think about how
you can better take care of the Chromebook I am letting
you use.

This month I will be reviewing The Emerald Atlas
by John Stephens.
In this book Kate, Michael, and Emma, were separated from their parents when they were very young. For 10 years they went from orphanage to orphanage but they always believed their parents would come back. Kate, as the oldest, made a promise to her mother when she was 4, the night when she was taken from her parents, to protect her brother and sister. Kate, Michael, and Emma travel to Cambridge Falls, a magical place hidden from normal people. There they find a magic book and travel back in time. When they travel back in time they face an evil witch called the Countess, make friends with a Wizard, meet dwarves, and fight monsters. Together they and their friends must un-ravel the secrets of the magic book, The Atlas and save the town of Cambridge Falls. But their magical journey does not end there. The Countess has an evil boss whom they find out has taken their parents prisoner and there are two more books of beginning to be found, before they get into the wrong hands.
