1.DesiredStudentProfile

As a scholarly discipline, science explores the principles and laws that govern natural phenomena.Throughitsendeavors,thisintellectualenterprisehascontributedtoprofoundculturaladvancesasanintellectualassetaswellastoimprovedlivingstandardsandwelfareforallofhumankind.From the earliest days of its establishment, the Graduate School of Science has operatedwithin anatmosphereofacademic freedomandcontinuedtobuildon itsextensiverecordoforiginal researchachievementatdivisionsofMathematicsandMathematicalSciences,PhysicsandAstronomy,EarthandPlanetary Science, Chemistry, and Biological Sciences. Foreign(non‐Japanese)nationalswithresidentstatus"Student"inJapan,includingthoseexpectedtobegrantedtheresidentstatusbythetimeofenrollment,whomeet(orareexpectedtomeetbythedaybefore enrollment, i.e. 31 March 2018 for April enrollment, 30 September 2018 for October 2018enrollment)eitherofthefollowingrequirementsareeligibletoapply.(1) ThosewhocompletedanundergraduateprogramataJapanesehighereducationinstitution;

(2) Thosegrantedabachelor'sdegreepursuanttoArticle104.4oftheSchoolEducationAct;

(3) Thosewhocompletedatotalof16yearsofschooleducationoutsideJapan;

(4) Thosewhocompletedatotalof16yearsofeducationprovidedbyanoverseasinstitutionthroughdistancelearningwhileresidinginJapan;

(5) ThosewhocompletedanundergraduateprograminJapan(limitedtothosewhosegraduatesaredeemedtohavecompleted16yearsofeducation)thatis:A)offeredbyaforeignhighereducationinstitution accredited in the foreign country; and B) designated by the Japanese Minister ofEducation,Culture,Sports,ScienceandTechnology("MEXT");

(6) Thosegrantedadegreeequivalenttoabachelor'sdegreethroughattendinganoverseasuniversityor other overseas school (limited to those whose education and research activities have beenevaluatedbypersonswhohavebeencertifiedbytherelevantcountry'sgovernmentorarelatedinstitution,orhavebeenseparatelydesignatedbyMEXTasbeingequivalenttosuch)andgraduatedfromaprogramthatrequires3ormoreyearstocomplete(IncludesgraduatingfromaprogramimplementedbytherelevantoverseasschoolwhilelivinginJapanthroughdistancelearning,aswellasgraduatingfromaprogramimplementedbyaneducationalfacilityestablishedwiththerelevantoverseascountry'sschooleducationsystemandhasreceivedthedesignationmentionedabove).

(7) ThosewhocompletedaprofessionalprogramatavocationalschooldesignatedbyMEXTonorafterthedatespecifiedbyMEXT;

(8) ThosedesignatedbyMEXT;

(9) Thosewho: A) received not less than three years of higher education (including those deemedequivalent by MEXT pursuant to Article 102.2 of the School Education Act); and B) areacknowledgedbytheGraduateSchoolofScience("GSS")thattheyhaveearnedprescribedcreditswithexcellentgrades;or

(10) Thosewhoare:A)deemedbyGSSat leastasacademicallyqualifiedasthosewhocompletedanundergraduateprogram;andB)aged22yearsorolder.

‐ InterviewswillbeconductedinJapaneseOREnglish.Prior to application please contact a Division faculty member you wish to have as your academicsupervisor.Admissionsdecisionswillbemadebasedonaholisticviewof thewrittenexamresults,oralexamperformance,andcharacteristicsoftheresearchfield. Intheoralexam,applicants'aptitudeforandknowledgeinthefield,communicationskillsrequired

toeffectivelyengageinresearch,andeagernessforpursuingresearchwillbeassessed.

Thosewhounderperformontheoralexammaynotbegrantedadmissionregardlessofthewrittenexamresults.

7.ExaminationFees

JPY30,000tobepaidbetween5and19January2018|PaymentmadeoutsidetheperiodwillNOTbeaccepted.(1) Pay examination fees according to the “PaymentMethod forApplicationFeeswithConvenience
