What is Teach on the Beach?

Teach on the Beach is a sustainable social enterprise of

embedded adventurous volunteers from the

United States in the Ghana education system through partnerships with government schools and

our own innovative after school programs.

Aaron Adler- Started work in Ghana in 2003 with Ali- Created NewsHour in 2007- Based in Toledo, OH

Alison Van Essendelft- Got Aaron off campus and teaching- Currently teaching in the Bronx- Foundation for our teaching efforts- Based in New York, NY

Volunteers Wanted

• Success of Teach on the Beach = Volunteer Mentors• Weekly Volunteer duties include:

– 7am – 9pm every weekday– 12 hours in the classroom– 15 hours after school mentoring– Saturday enrichment programs

• team sports, computer classes, reading club, etc.

Good start. We'll need a pitch for them them and one for investors. Here's the elevator... Ask for Volunteers -> Vs need to be mentors -> Ms who act as Teacher/Counselor. "Don't just teach... Teach on the Beach. Inspire, engage, learn, grow, be the change, etc." Investor pitch needs to be similar with added budget figures, players involved, goals, plans, etc.

• Experience Ghana. Organize and lead an educational excursion to a historical or ecological site with sponsored students.

• Meet Global Citizens. King of the Western Region of Ghana , members of parliament such as the former Defense Minister, UN election observers, UNDP staffers on the ground, Peace Corps country directors, and more.

• Develop Programs and relationships so that the next intern can continue your work for the next and the next.

Our Programs

• Busua Primary School– Teaching is in short supply, we try to fulfill the demand – Befriend, help and encourage teachers– Lead students from school to after school programs

• After School– We have story books, textbooks, computers, art supplies– Volunteers teach our students to teach other students

NewsHour Past

• Started in 2007 when Aaron Adler was working in an orphanage in the forest region of Ghana

• Aaron invited the older children in the orphanage to watch the news with him and other volunteers, and then asked them to talk about it

• To ensure participation, he had to create a safe, accepting, and casual environment– i.e. Adults help steer the conversation, but don’t interject

their opinions!

NewsHour Present

• The safe environment helped the program grow and grab the interest of the children

• Today, many of the same students are still doing NewsHour daily, improving listening, note-taking, speaking and writing abilities

• NewsHour is now a weekly program at:– Bishop Luers High School in Ft Wayne, IN– Seaholm High School in Birmingham, MI

MissionTeach on the Beach serves to encourage learning and create a brighter future for the children of Ghana, their country and the World by:

1. Sponsoring a select group of disadvantaged students to become agents of change.

2. Bringing volunteers from diverse backgrounds to advise, mentor, and aide in providing a broad education.

We work closely with local communities and schools to enhance the effectiveness of our sponsorship program, but ultimately our goal is for our students and volunteers to teach, mentor, and challenge their compatriots..
