INFO SHEET

Conceal Textured Caulk for Wood Conceal textured caulk delivers performance that’s hard to see. Conceal’s 7 colors blend in with the most popular stains used on log and wood homes, and Conceal’s light texture simulates the natural roughness of wood. The combination of color and texture makes it hard to see where the caulking ends and the wood begins. Instead, they just blend together. Although the caulking is hard to see, Conceal delivers performance. It outperforms all other textured caulks currently available. Additionally, Conceal. . . • Cleans up with soap and water• Is resistant to rainfall in 1-4 hours• Has a limited lifetime warranty• Has superior elongation, memory and adhesion

Fundamental Caulking Application Guidelines• Proper substrate preparation and application are

imperative for product longevity. Read this entire Info Sheet (CNL 002) before applying any product.

• Conceal is not a chinking and should be used in joints under 2” wide. If the joints are wider, we recommend either Log Jam or Chinker’s Edge.

• Make certain there is compatibility between your stain and Conceal. We recommend Sashco’s Capture®/Cascade®, High Sierra®, or Transformation® stains for exterior applications and Symphony® interior clear coat for beautiful long-term protection. Best results are obtained when Conceal is applied to clean, stained wood. Call Sashco at 1-800-767-5656 for guidance.

• Check the weather forecast. Finishing products are best applied in moderate weather conditions, i.e., out of direct sunlight, in dry, warm conditions.

• Check the surface temperature. It should be between 40˚-90˚F (4˚-32˚C).

• It is always best to use a bond breaker (usually backer rod) before caulking. Sashco strongly recom-mends the use of backer rod, especially if the home is new and/or the wood is subject to significant movement. If a bond breaker is not used, expect more caulking repairs.

• Tool Conceal to help ensure good contact with the wood surfaces. This will greatly aid adhesion.

• Ideal caulk depth is half of the joint width, but no less than 1/4” and no more than 1/2”.

• Assemble tools and equipment: - Backer rod - Caulking guns - Trowels, spatulas, or foam brushes for tooling - Clean water and rags - Plastic sheets to cover the caulking if wet

weather moves in - Staple gun & staples (if necessary to help with

backer rod installation)• If you have any questions about application, watch

our application videos at www.sashco.com or call us call us at 1-800-767-5656.

Surface Preparation Best results are obtained when Conceal is applied to wood that has been previously coated with a com-patible and thoroughly cured stain. In fact, Conceal has a Limited Lifetime Warranty when applied over any of Sashco’s stains: Capture Log Stain, High Sierra or Transformation. Call us for details on this special warranty – the best in the industry! If not using a Sashco stain, be sure to confirm its compatibility with Conceal. If the stain is older but still intact, clean the wood surfaces thoroughly to remove dirt, pollen, bird droppings, and other surface contaminants. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory and other researchers around the world have recently reported that surface wood exposed to sunlight for as little as 1-2 weeks can become significantly damaged and unsound which may lead to premature adhesive failure of coatings. Such surface wood damage has the potential to also hurt Conceal’s (or any caulk’s) adhesion. Once bare wood has been properly cleaned and prepped to remove unsound wood, stain should be applied as soon as possible. Follow with Conceal caulking. A few stains, especially those high in wax content or non-drying oils, may interfere with adhesion. Some of these coatings can hurt any caulk’s adhesion—whether applied before or after the caulk—so we advise against their use. Check with Sashco if you have questions about your particular product.

INFO SHEET

Log Builder® Caulk All logs move, so Log Builder was specifically designed to absorb most log movement. Most movement occurs within the first few years, when logs lose the majority of their moisture causing them to shrink and the joints to expand. That’s why it’s crucial to use Log Builder from the start. If the logs are extremely “green” (with very high moisture content) it is often best to wait several months before caulking. Log Builder is ultra-elas-tic, which means it will stretch and compress with normal movement. It won’t crack, peel or pull away. Instead, it creates a tight seal to keep water, dust, bugs and wind from seeping into your home—for many years. Log Builder is the smooth sealant for milled and hand-crafted log structures.

Fundamental Caulking Application Guidelines• Propersubstratepreparationandapplicationareimper-

ative for product longevity. Read this entire info sheet (LBR 002) before applying any product.

• Makecertainthereiscompatibilitybetweenyour stain and Log Builder. Best results are obtained when Log Builder is applied to clean, stained wood. Call Sashco at 800-767-5656 for guidance if in doubt.

Surface Preparation Best results are obtained when Log Builder is applied to wood that has been previously coated with a compatible and thoroughly cured stain. In fact, Log Builder has a Limited Lifetime Warranty when applied overanyofSashco’sstains:CaptureLogStainorTransformation Stain. If not using a Sashco stain, be sure to confirm its compatibility with Log Builder. If the stain is older but still intact, clean the log surfaces thoroughly to remove dirt, pollen, bird droppings, and other surface contaminants. TheUSDAForestProductsLaboratoryandotherresearchers around the world have recently reported that surface wood exposed to sunlight for as little as 1-2weekscanbecomesignificantlydamagedandunsound which may lead to premature adhesive failure of coatings. Such surface wood damage has the potential to also hurt Log Builder’s (or any caulk’s) adhesion. Once bare wood has been properly cleaned and prepped to remove unsound wood, stain should beappliedassoonaspossible.Followwith Log Building caulking. A few sealers, especially those high in wax content or non-drying oils, may interfere with adhesion. Some of these coatings can hurt any caulk’s adhesion—whether applied before or after the caulk—so we advise against theiruse.CheckwithSashcoifyouhavequestionsaboutyour particular product.

Symphony Clear Interior Log CoatingWhen natural beauty is your passion, Symphony is

“music to your eyes.” It’s the colorless coating that not only protects, it livens the interior of your home by allowing light to dance off the logs. When applied to bare wood, Symphony enhances the natural grain, color and beauty. But it can also be used over many stains to display an orchestra of visual impact—adding depth and richness to the color. With Symphony, cozy warmth and natural elegance can be yours.

Designed Specifically For Your Log Home• Leaves a slick surface that makes cleaning a breeze—

just use a damp rag to remove dust, dirt and stains.• An environmentally friendly, low toxicity, non-flamma-

ble formula that doesn’t have the offensive odor associ-ated with many other clear coatings.

• Convenient 5-gallon pail packaging that lends itself to spray application, which can save you time and labor.

• Unlike many other water-based coatings, Symphony remains stable through several freeze-thaw cycles.

• Symphony is versatile and can also be used on interior woodwork, cabinets, paneling and wood trim. It is not recommended for floors or exteriors.

Fundamental Application Guidelines 1. Proper substrate preparation and application are imper-

ative for product longevity. Read this entire Info Sheet, SYM 002, before applying any product.

2. You should always test any coatings on your specific logs before applying to an entire wall.

3. Apply only to interior walls where the roof is in place, the product is at room temperature, there are no cold drafts and the wood surfaces are between 50˚F (10˚C) to 90˚F (32C).

4. Tannin staining should be dealt with before applying any interior clear coatings to bare logs. Refer to the section titled “Tannin Staining” for further information on this important topic. If you’ve applied a pigmented coat of stain, tannin staining is usually not an issue.

5. The moisture content of interior wood should be low enough to resist microbial growth before applying any coatings, at least 19% or less. Use a moisture meter to make sure this is a fact. If the wood’s moisture content is higher, wait until it lowers to 15% or less, or add a biocide (such as Stay Clean I/E) to your coating before application.

TANNIN STAININGUgly brown or yellow discolorations in wood are

most often due to tannin staining. Tannins are a natural component in all wood and help give it its natural color. Although tannin staining can occur on exterior wood, it is more noticeable and objectionable when it occurs on the interior of a home.

Tannin staining occurs different ways:• At the surface of logs high in moisture content, when

tannins are moved to the surface by escaping water;• When water drips on or flows over a wood surface

over a period of time. These areas will have a central region of very light, almost white wood, surrounded by an irregular, much darker wood where the tannins have been concentrated.

Usually, tannin discoloration in the surface of the wood is only 1/32” or so deep and can be lightly sanded away. If sanding does not work, chemical cleaners may need to be used. Contact Sashco for detailed information, as these cleaners need to be carefully applied.

Applying SymphonyNEW WOOD

If you’ve decided to keep your logs natural looking and only want to apply Symphony to bare wood, best results are obtained if you sand the wood to a smooth finish with fine sandpaper. Be certain to remove all dust before finishing. Do not use steel wool; it may cause rust stains. For a smoother finish, sand between coats..

FINISHED WOODCompatibility is a huge issue, so logs that already

have some type of stain or sealer on them will need to be tested for compatibility; call us and we will talk you through the testing procedure. For best adhesion to non-Sashco coatings, it is usually best to lightly sand the surface before applying Symphony. Contact Sashco for information on compatibility testing. For best adhesion to non-Sashco coatings, it is best to lightly sand the surface before applying Symphony. Old finishes may need to be mechanically removed if a lighter appearance is desired.

Why You Need A Wood PreservativeYou’ve just spent a long time leafing through

planning books, selecting the logs, choosing the per-fect lot—waiting for your dream home to be built. Why put all that at risk? Rot, weather, insects, fungi allpose a serious threat to your logs. Protect your invest-ment—treat your logs first to make them last.

All wood faces the possibility of rot and insectinfestation—even in dry climates. Fungi and insectsactually consume the cells of dead wood, often causingsevere structural damage, damage that often requireslog replacement—a costly repair.

PeneTreat helps protect your home from the costly damage caused by rot and insect infestation.

What is PeneTreat?PeneTreat is a borate-based wood preservative.

Borates are well-known across the world for their pro-tective qualities. And like other borates, PeneTreat ishighly effective in the prevention of most rot andwood-boring insects.

When using PeneTreat, a protective “shell” coat-ing helps defend your home against dry, wet, andbrown rot as well as termites, house borers, powder-post beetles and carpenter ants (to name a few).

The PeneTreat DifferencePeneTreat is registered with the Environmental

Protection Agency (EPA) for spray and brush applica-tion, which makes it perfect for remedial treatment. Italso means that you can apply it (you don’t have to bea licensed applicator). But, you must follow all appli-cation and use guidelines.

Do not mix PeneTreat into stains. For borates tobe effective and to provide long-term protection, theymust soak into the wood itself, not remain in the coat-ing. Although some stains contain borates, the low per-centage of borate in the stain--generally 2-3% provideslittle to no appreciable benefit. Therefore, follow thePeneTreat mixing and application guidelines toachieve recommended BAE (borate acid equivalent)levels that truly provide long-term, effective protec-tion.

PeneTreat can be applied by brushing, spraying, dipping, kerf-flooding or hole flooding. It comes inpowder form and just needs to be mixed with water forapplication. PeneTreat is packaged in two convenientsizes: 6-gallon pails that are easy to carry and double

as a handy source for mixing the solution and the 3-1/2gallon size—perfect for smaller jobs.

The active ingredient in PeneTreat (disodiumoctaborate tetrahydrate - a refined form of the naturalmineral borax) is less toxic to people and animals than many other chemicals used for wood preserva-tion. However, since no pesticide is completely safe,PeneTreat must be handled and used as directed.Borates do not affect the natural color or strength of wood; they are completely odorless; they’re not corrosive to metal fasteners, nails or screws. And when a “PeneTreat home” is properly sealed againstmoisture, the borates can provide many years of effective protection.

More Protection for Your Money

The best part about PeneTreat is the money itsaves you. Not only is PeneTreat affordable, it savesyou the headaches, time and costs associated withpotential log replacement and damage control.

According to the most comprehensive studyavailable, the depth of penetration of PeneTreat is asdeep or deeper than other borate products that useslow-drying and toxic solvents (like ethylene glycol)in their formulations. Contact Sashco at 1-800-767-5656 if you'd like a copy of this study.

The Basics of Applying CPRPreparation*1. Read this entire Data Tec, CPR 002, before applying

any product. 2. Decide if you need to use the cleaner or

brightener strength.3. Wear protective eyewear, such as safety glasses with

side shields or goggles, when applying this product.Neoprene gloves and long-sleeved clothing are recom-mended to help protect skin. Hydrogen peroxide isreleased when CPR is dissolved in water, so use withgood ventilation.

4. Brush any dirt, loose material or other contaminantsfrom wood surfaces to ensure that CPR makes goodcontact with the surface you wish to clean or brighten. Keep the solution off surfaces you do not want bleached.

5. Use in warm weather, between 60˚ and 90˚F, for best results.

*NOTE: CPR is not recommended for use on Redwood,Douglas Fir or other high tannin woods. CPR mayoccasionally darken these woods - please test first.

Cleaner Strength(for less severe discoloration and surface cleaning)

Mix 1/2 of the container with 4 gallons of clean waterin a clean 5-gallon plastic pail.

Brightener Strength(for aggressive cleaning)

Mix the entire container with 4 gallons of clean waterin a clean 5-gallon plastic pail.

MixingStir thoroughly until the powder is mostly dissolved

(which will take a few minutes, depending on water

temperature). The solution will begin to “fizz” as thepowder dissolves. Not all of the powder will completelydissolve in the solution; even if all of the powder is notcompletely dissolved, the solution is very usable. For thebest and most consistent results, the solution should beused within 4 hours.

CoverageAt either strength, solution coverage is between 100

and 150 square feet per gallon (500-750 square feet per 5gallons), depending on the wood porosity.

ApplicationApply CPR to one wall at a time, starting at the bottom

and working completely across, 2-5 logs high. When thebottom 2-5 logs are completely cleaned and/or bright-ened, then move up the wall to the next 2-5 logs.Continue in a similar pattern to the top of the wall. Workonly on one small area at a time (15-25 sq. ft.) for bestresults. Rinse with clean water as you go. Apply via gar-den sprayer, brush or mop. Allow the solution to work for5-20 minutes, keeping the surfaces wet with additionalCPR solution. For best results, vigorously scrub the sur-faces with a stiff-bristle brush to remove unsound surfacewood. After you’ve cleaned the entire wall with the CPRsolution, starting at the top, rinse the entire wall thor-oughly and allow to dry before application of preserva-tives or stains. Repeat applications of CPR solution maybe necessary for tougher discolorations, more severe UVdamage and/or heavily weathered wood surfaces.

CleaningClean brushes and equipment with soap and water.

WarningAvoid contact with eyes and skin and do not ingest.

Keep away from children and animals. Harmful if swal-lowed. CPR Log Cleaner & Brightener will not harmgrass or most plants — it decomposes into water, oxygenand soda ash. Rinse grass and plants thoroughly withclean water after exposure. Solutions of CPR can be slip-pery until washed away! Take precautions to avoid slip-ping on ladders, scaffolding, decks, sidewalks, etc.
