The key elements are to show a design ability / competency and are encouraged to show design process, development and thinking behind your work; your personal approach to design / urban context, including your inspiration (either in photography, art, design, sketch book etc). It is necessary to include your responsibility of design projects and/or design role within projects in the portfolio, dates or timeframes worked on the project and potential outcomes / lessons. It will be important to show at least 1 digital (AutoCAD, sketch-up etc.) drawing and an approach to 3-dimensional modelling/drawing at scale. You can include your own academic writing that has been evaluated at your previous institution of study/ relevant research work or material that clearly illustrates your urban approach and design interest. This portfolio will be assessed by a Selection Committee.

Representation

COURSE OUTLINE: 12 credits, Level NQF 8

Urban Design Representation is conducted in the first semester. The course aims to develop analytical and presentation skills for use in the urban design studio by exploring everyday urban spaces.

The objectives are:• To learn representation of the city through sketching,

drawing / mapping using digital tools (GIS etc.) and other tools of representation, including film, photogra-phy by exploring the use of post apartheid divided city space.

• To illustrate how everyday “in-between” spaces and ways of inhabiting space can facilitate social activa-tion and movement in space.

How do we represent?...left-over, divided city space;

...activated space “in-between”

UD Theory I / ACD

COURSE OUTLINE: 12 credits, Level NQF 8/9

URBAN DESIGN THEORY / ASPECTS OF CITY DESIGN is conducted in the first semester. The course is about reviewing the typology of cities and urban design through theory and case studies. It aims to investigate the value of city design through considering performance at a local neighbourhood area / precinct scale. A case study located within the Western Cape is used as part of the workshop series co-designprocess.

COURSE OUTLINE: 20 credits, NQF 9Urban Design Theory II is conducted in the 2nd Semester. This seminar series relates to critical readings ad discussion focused on urban theory in the local African context and the intersection between urban design and the social agenda. Debates are intended to revolve around themes of the everyday African City: informality, public space, gover-nance and partnerships, inequity and marginalisation.

UD Studio (PART A)

COURSE OUTLINE: 48 credits, Level NQF 9 (40% - A)

Urban Design Studio PART A is conducted in the first term. It is a course combined with Landscape Architec-ture, Planning and Urban Design students.

The overarching aims of the term is to introduce the complimentary and conflict dimensions of design, while, simultaneously, exposing the students to values of democratic planning and design processes. The studio also offers ways of unpacking value systems that disrupt and transform dominant - but often entrenched - ways of ‘knowing’ and ‘doing’ in the built environment. The studio will expose the students to various ‘design think-ing’ and place-making tools for the purpose of engag-ing with creative urban form responses. The students will learn how to engage with the process of urbanism through exploring principles, ideas, models and precedent, and how to use these to guide action.

APG 5083F:

UD Studio (PART B)

COURSE OUTLINE: 48 credits, Level NQF 9, (60% - B)

Urban Design Studio PART B is conducted in the second term. It is a course combined with Landscape Architecture and Urban Design students.

Ideally this studio is based in a context “outside of the metro”, preferable in an African City - this is to be determined based on the funding and availability of time and resources by students. A local context will be developed if an international city is not possible.

CONFLICTING SPACES

TERM 2: ruralSTUDIO ROBERTSON

APG 5084F:UD Research

Methods

COURSE OUTLINE: 20 credits, NQF 9

The course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to develop a research proposal for the Urban Design Research Project (UDRP) (SEMESTER 2), or final project as part of the MUD.

This research proposal developed will include:• A clear statement of the research questions, aims,

rationale, including context, background information that will guide the UDRP - upfront engagement and research will be important prior to the mid-term break;

• An overview of literature and the theoretical framework for the UDRP;

• Methodologies to be used for the UDRP;• Explanation and connection to relevance of the

topic relative to urban design;• A draft bibliography;• A clear timetable for your research;• Completion of the required UCT ethics forms.

5-day MODULE: Research Methods

What makes a good research question?

... link to theory, precedent or practical examples, context specific, city design...

APG 5086S:

UD Research Project

COURSE OUTLINE: 60 Credits, NQF 9Urban Design Research Project is conducted in the second semester. The aim of the research project is to develop and demonstrate integrated research ad urban design skills; identify and address a well-defined urban design issue or question in the context of a site; develop an ability to analyse design orientated research findings according to explicit criteria; and to present and support an urban design re-sponse to the issue/question raised through appropriate methods of Urban Design inquiry and representation.

The Research Project must be original, rigorous and make a strategic contribution to the discipline of urban design locally and in South Africa / internationally.

SEMESTER 2: Urban Design Research Project (UDRP)
