Master of Science in Nursing
The online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) at Davenport University offers an advanced level of graduate study expanding on the knowledge, skills and competencies acquired at the baccalaureate or entry- level nursing education program. The Master of Science in Nursing prepares post-licensure baccalaureate registered nurses in the advanced nursing role. The curriculum for this program reflects the Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing (AACN, 2014) and the Outcomes and Competencies for Graduates of Master’s Programs in Nursing (National League for Nursing, 2010). The clinical practice experiences for the MSN Generalist are aligned
with the Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing (2011), the Outcomes and Competencies for Graduates of Master’s Programs in Nursing (NLN, 2010) and to student and program outcomes (see Appendix). The clinical practice experiences for the MSN FNP advanced practice role are aligned with the Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing (2011), the Outcomes and Competencies for Graduates of Master’s Programs in Nursing (NLN, 2010), Essentials of Master’s Education for Advanced Practice Nursing (AACN, 1996), Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies (NONPF, 2014) and to student and program outcomes.

Mable Engle Nursing Program
The MSN program builds on foundations in the arts, sciences and humanities acquired during baccalaureate education, which prepares students with the academic knowledge and skills needed to advance to the graduate level. Matriculation in the MSN program requires a baccalaureate degree in nursing. Coursework for the MSN Generalist is grouped into three specific curricular domains:
foundations of advanced nursing, advanced nursing core (direct care), and the advanced nursing role. Coursework for the MSN FNP is grouped into three specific curricular domains: foundations of advanced nursing, advanced nursing core (direct care), and the advanced practice nursing role.
Master of Science in Nursing (37 Credits) — Generalist Concentration
The MSN program prepares the students in the advanced nursing generalist role to become skillful in analysis (critical thinking and reasoning), pathophysiological concepts, advanced health assessment skills, pharmacological principles and applications, evaluation of evidence, critique of research and synthesis of literature to support best practices. Students develop and conduct research
that contributes to nursing knowledge development. The students then learn how to critique research findings that answer nursing questions, solve nursing problems and develop innovative nursing interventions for select nursing populations. Students complete clinical within a variety of settings where they develop leadership skills related to practice improvement.
Master of Science in Nursing (46 Credits) — Family Nurse Practitioner Concentration
The Master of Science in Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program prepares the baccalaureate nurse to care for adults and children of all ages with essential focus on family and community. Graduates of this program will be able to provide health promotion and primary healthcare for families and individuals in the context of their families. The Family Nurse Practitioner program focuses on continual and comprehensive wellness and illness care for individuals across the lifespan to assist with illness management, health promotion and health education. Graduate Family Nurse Practitioner students will be prepared to assume leadership roles for the targeted populations in the primary settings. Family Nurse
Practitioners are prepared to provide care to individuals with acute and chronic illnesses in a variety of primary care practice settings such as clinics, outpatient services and more.
Upon successful completion of the Master of Science in Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner Concentration, the graduate will be eligible to seek certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner, offered by American Nurses’ Credentialing Center and/or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Following successful certification, the graduate applies to the Department of Professional Regulation for licensure as an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) for practice in their State.
