A.L.E.P offers the opportunity to complete high school in a non-traditional way, allowing students to earn a pay cheque and credits through their existing job. PROGRAMS AVAILABLE AT HURON EXPLORING OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM (EOP) (can be linked to SHSM) The Exploring Opportunities Program is for students with an interest and aptitude in the manufacturing, construction or transportation sectors (e.g. Precision Machining, CNC programmer, millwright, welder, furniture maker/cabinetmaker, construction millwright, industrial millwright…). Students may accumulate up to 5 credits while gaining valuable work experience and developing the essential skills and work habits needed for a career in manufacturing, construction and transportation.
This program benefits you if:
you are interested in participating in an Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP)
you are interested in the option of Accelerated Level 1 College Apprenticeship Training during the school year
you are considering participating in the Specialist High Skills Major Program (SHSM) in Manufacturing, Construction or Transportation. Some certifications that may be included by the program: CPR, First Aid, WHMIS, Fall Arrest, Propane Safety and CAD. Sample courses: 4–5 credit package

SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJOR
OPPORTUNITIES in ALL DESTINATIONS+ HIGH SKILLS+ ENGAGING LEARNING ENVIRONMENT = SHSM! The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a ministry approved specialized program that allows a student in ANY PATHWAY (College, Apprenticeship, Workplace, University) to hone in on skills in a specific sector while earning a high school diploma (OSSD). By using only a few of your electives, you can earn a SPECIALIZED DIPLOMA including industry standard training as you discover opportunities that will help you develop your personal learning goals. Everything will be documented on your transcript as proof that you have filled the requirements needed to earn an SHSM diploma. Begin by selecting SHSM on the right hand side of your screen of your course planner.

MAJORS AVAILABLE AT HURON HEIGHTS Arts and Culture — (Artisan and Craftsperson, Hairstylist, Graphic Designer, Broadcast/Audio, Artists, Public Relations or Advertising, Museums and Art Galleries). We encourage students to take at least one course in Indigenous Studies or Technology related to their field of interest as one of their four required major courses.

Underlined occupations – These have ACCELERATED OYAP options where you can potentially spend time in college/ union training facility and earn your Level ONE Apprenticeship in Semester 2 of your grade 12 year.
DUAL CREDIT PROGRAM A Dual Credit course allows senior students to earn high school credits and college credits at the same time in the same course. You can experience college life while still in high school, at no cost to you. This is an opportunity to try something new while exploring different program pathways. For options available, see Dual Credit Tab under High School/Courses in myPathwayPlanner on the YRDSB Main Page. Select dual credit course code YYY4X, and then see a Guidance Counsellor for additional application process. Dual credit course selection will be available in May/June.
Many Dual Credits will count for SHSM Major Credits.
SOCIAL JUSTICE CERTIFICATE
Mission - Our mission is to promote the knowledge, skills, values and practices to meet the social, economic and environmental challenges of sustaining social justice.
Certificate Requirements: Students may earn the social justice certificate by fulfilling three requirements:
a) successful completion of seven courses with an average of 70% from designated social justice course groupings: economic, social, political and environmental;
b) successful completion of 80 hours of community service;
c) participation in extra-curricular clubs/groups which promote a positive school culture through informed decision making and active civic participation (PEACE club, Peer Ambassadors, Peer Mentors, Student Council, Athletic Council, Drama Council, Music Council).

Pathways - This certificate would be beneficial to students who might be pursuing further studies in the areas of: social work, political science, journalism, international studies, international development, global studies, health care studies.
