THE IDEA THAT CUTTING-EDGE DESIGN CAN ONLY COME FROM

ARCHITECTS WHO REMAIN UNTOUCHED BY THE CONSTRAINTS OF

BUSINESS OR FINANCE IS NOW OBSOLETE. IN FACT, CONTEMPORARY

PRACTICE HAS SHOWN THAT ALTHOUGH EXCELLENCE OF DESIGN IS

NECESSARY FOR SUCCESS, IT IS BY NO MEANS THE ONLY REQUIREMENT.

Business acumen and management know-how now play a key role in the success

of an architectural practice. The Master in Architectural Management and Design

bridges the gap between advanced design and the management skills that are

essential to succeed in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC)

industry today. This multifaceted program is designed to cover the specific needs

of professionals who already have a sound working knowledge of theoretical

and applied principles, and now wish to acquire and apply business expertise in

the field of AEC. Today, many professionals in architecture, design and in other

creative fields are inhibited from progressing and expanding their influence due

to their inability to effectively use business tools and vocabulary.

Furthermore, students can expect to develop their interpersonal skills through

hands-on practice and extensive teamwork.

A WORD OF WELCOME

Dear Prospective Student,

One of the most exciting

and promising conditions

of our time is change.

The world grows and

innovates faster than

ever before, pushed

by leading companies,

teams and individuals.

Design in general, the

architecture, engineering,

and construction (AEC)

fields, and many other related ones are experiencing deep

transformations at all levels.

Traditional and widely accepted models of design production

used to put little attention on anything beyond the act of

designing and its direct implications. Today, our impact as

professionals increasingly depends on our understanding

across disciplines, innovation-driven dynamics and team

structures, value creation and communication, finance and

strategy, and technology as the basis of business model

generation. As outstanding professionals, your companies

will perhaps be the most complex and essential design of

your lives.

The Master in Architectural Management and Design –MAMD–

is specifically oriented to create leaders in this context. Close

collaboration between IE Business School and the School of

Architecture & Design brings together entrepreneurial spirit

and world-class expertise in management and strategy, with

excellence in design.

The Master is not only unique for its content, but also for the

thriving and diverse community that constitutes its essence

and for its blended format, in which IE is a leader. The capacity

to combine professional work, research or other interests

while taking this course, together with the master’s strong

orientation towards practice and entrepreneurship are unique

aspects that make the Master so appropriate for today´s

world. The Venture Lab will allow you to test and develop your

personal or company skills and projects in a real and practical

way, with views to directly applying what you have learned.

The Master in Architectural Management and Design

experience is a solid combination of online periods and

face to face periods in Madrid and London, hosted by the

Royal Institute of British Architects. The weeks that students

and faculty are together in the classroom create numerous

opportunities to discuss what has been learned in the online

periods, to push forward the ongoing venture projects,

and provide an intense experience of team learning and

collaboration, which is essential in our time.

Join the Master in Architectural Management and Design, and

become a leader, in a world where the impact and awareness

of design are growing exponentially.

We look forward to working alongside you.

Sincerely,

Jerónimo van Schendel

INTRODUCTION MODULE 5

MODULE 1

INTRODUCTION MODULE 3

INTRODUCTION MODULE 2 MODULE 2

INTRODUCTION MODULE 4

MODULE 1

THE AEC PROFESSIONAL AS AN ENTREPRENEUR I

• Entrepreneurial Management

• Personal Strategy

• Design and Business Communication

Since its inception, IE Business School has embraced the entrepreneurial spirit as a core value, and is now an international reference in the field of entrepreneurship. In fact, the School itself was founded by entrepreneurs, and the entrepreneurial spirit is an integral part of its day-to-day fabric. In this first module, students learn how to develop a compelling business model. They are encouraged to come up with new venture ideas, form teams with colleagues and spend several months developing business models that are “investor ready.” For many, the culmination of this exercise is a reality check of their business models, while for others it is the beginning of turning these ideas into their future entrepreneurial ventures.

MODULE 2

THE AEC PROFESSIONAL AS A MANAGER I

• Financial Planning

• Economic Environment

• Strategy Fundamentals

• Marketing Fundamentals

This module provides students with a foundation in general management which helps them build a solid foundation for the in-depth exploration of an organization as a whole, not just as a sum of its parts. Most areas of management are case studies using practical examples, which deal with real or fictional problems that may arise in different company contexts, and are analyzed from global or national perspectives.

MODULE 3

THE AEC PROFESSIONAL AS A DESIGNER

• Introduction to Design Management

• Strategic Design

• Cost Control and Design

• Marketing and Design

• Computational Design

• Building Information Management

The third module addresses how design decisions have business implications and vice versa. It also provides advanced design skills and state-of-the-art software knowledge to be applied in a multidisciplinary integrated practice. In London, as part of the Architects Backstage series, students attend lectures with architects representing top practices such as Foster + Partners, AHR-Global, Chipperfield, OMA, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, GENSLER and Zaha Hadid Architects. Each one of these practices excels in coupling management and design strategies and shares with students their experience of the back office work needed to achieve outstanding design.

MODULE 4

THE AEC PROFESSIONAL AS A MANAGER II

• Project Management

• Technology Management

• Managing Legal Issues

• Human Resource Management

During this module, a more in-depth approach is explored through the techniques of strategy implementation in multinational organizations, to provide students with the necessary tools to adapt to an environment of constant change.

MODULE 5

THE AEC PROFESSIONAL AS AN ENTREPRENEUR II

• Venture Lab

The program culminates with the Venture Lab, which allows students to conceptualize their own architectural businesses through a business plan that integrates all their recently acquired management and design skills. As opposed to the standard practice of judging purely design and technical excellence, the Venture Lab extends criteria beyond the project’s design to include critical business aspects such as marketing, finance and strategy, among others.

SOFT SKILLS LAB

Students have the opportunity to participate in innovative workshops in areas such as team building and effective communication, virtual collaboration, and decision-making that will push them beyond their comfort zone and expose them to real-world professional situations.

VENTURE LAB PRESENTATION

During the last face-to-face period in Madrid at the end of the program, students will have the opportunity to present their Venture Lab projects to a panel of experts including architects, business angels and IE Business School professors, where they will receive valuable feedback.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

You will only need to take time off work for 7 weeks to attend face-to-face sessions over a period of 1 year. This will only require 2 trips to Madrid and 1 to London.

MADRID. FEBRUARY, 3 WEEKS LONDOn. JULY, 3 WEEKS MADRID. FEBRUARY, 1 WEEK

At the beginning of the Master At the beginning of the 3rd term At the end of the program, which includes your graduation ceremony

1ST TRIP 2ND TRIP 3RD TRIP

TYPICAL FACE-TO-FACE WEEK

• You will meet all professors and classmates face-to-face.

• 5 sessions a day.

• 1 hour session of group work per day.

• All sessions take place in Madrid and London.

Architects Backstage Students also meet top-tier, internationally recognized architecture and design professionals who share real world experiences through specialized lectures. Students have a unique opportunity to learn from practitioners about the processes and strategies that have helped shape their careers to achieve excellence. Featured speakers in past intakes included Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, Foster + Partners, Zaha Hadid and OMA.

TYPICAL ONLINE WEEK

Online learning sessions run for one week and comprise 3 main phases:

1. Individual preparation: reading cases, chapters, technical notes, etc.

2. Group discussion and assignment: Case discussion and completion of the group assignment as indicated by the professor.

3. Live Videoconferences: every Friday from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., students participate in online sessions which allow both professors and students to transmit audio and video material live via webcam. This makes the online learning experience as rich as the face-to-face experience.

4. Online forum: There will be, case discussions from Monday to Thursday each week, allowing students and professors time to read and assimilate the opinions posted before submitting their own well-thought-out written comments to the forum. Several discussions are held in parallel, facilitating links among the different aspects under discussion, thus enriching the learning process. As the online campus runs actively 24/7, you can choose the time to participate that best suits your schedule. The online discussions are moderated by the professors, who guide students’ opinions in order to obtain the best possible results for each case.

IE LEADERS IN BLENDED EDUCATION

IE is not only recognized worldwide for its full-time master’s programs, but also for the online education that the institution offers, mainly for Executive Education. IE´s online MBA programs were ranked 1st worldwide by the Financial Times (2015 ranking).

Thanks to the innovative use of new technologies, which allow us to replicate face-to-face teaching techniques, you wil l be able to enjoy the same interactive experience you would have in a traditional classroom.

The face-to-face periods allow you to create personal relationships and meaningful bonds with the people you will work with throughout the year. These periods combine workshops, company visits, meals and classes that require physical presence. The residentia l periods, an essential part of the blended experience, allow you to build deeper re lat ionships and understand the different perspectives and viewpoints of your classmates.

The IE Online Campus is a web platform that allows students to access all of the program’s online activities any time they wish from any location. The campus is also accessible from smartphones and tablets.

FINAL PROJECT - IE VENTURE LAB

During the final term, students of the Master in Architectural Management and Design develop their final project in the Venture

Lab. They integrate much of the material covered throughout the entire program, and through their own research, discussions

and creativity, they shape and plan new business ventures. Preparing, writing, and presenting a business plan is a useful final

project, not only for those who are looking to launch their own businesses, but also for those who perform any management

role that demands opportunity identification and execution.

A special panel of experienced professionals gives valuable feedback on each project. Many of our students have even

taken a step further and put into practice the business venture they developed during this program, turning ideas into reality.

Every year, the student with the best proposal wins an award. Here are some of the projects:

ATELIER MEL, by student Maria Ruiz Pardo

Atelier MEL designs and manufactures exclusive art pieces,

combining the most advanced digital design technologies

with ancient artisan glass techniques.

A young team of architects, engineers and glass artisans

started the project in 2014 with the purpose of rethinking

the glass tradition to take it one step further.

Based in Spain, the country where all its products are

manufactured, it soon expanded its market overseas.

Currently Atelier MEL develops projects in the USA, China,

India, the Middle East and Europe.

G-CAMPUS, by student Elvira Conejero

G-CAMPUS is a global platform that aims to move one step

beyond conventional architecture practice by improving

Gensler’s performance internally. A new model of internal

communication and collaboration is proposed at local and

global scales, updating existing content and programs by

adapting them to the new technologies and new design

strategies. This is always based on Gensler’s culture, which

it has been able to maintain throughout its history and

growth.

Trebol, by Maria Ruiz - Atelier MEL

CLASS PROFILE

IE´s Master in Architectural Management and Design is aimed at a range of profiles in the field, from young professionals who wish to start their own practice or ascend in their current firm, to designers, engineers or planners who wish to acquire the tools and expertise needed to advance and undertake new roles, to partners in AEC firms who want to update and hone their skills.

WHY MADRID?

If you decide to join us at IE, you will be part of more than a master’s program. Your learning will go beyond classroom training; it will extend to a rich array on- and off-campus activities, and the cultural and professional life in the excellent city of Madrid.

• Madrid is the capital of Spain and Europe’s fourth-largest city. It is the epicenter of

Spanish culture, business, and politics.

• IE’s campus is around 20,000 m2 in size, spread across 17 buildings strategically situated in

the Salamanca neighborhood, in the heart of the city.

• Spanish is the native language of 500 million people worldwide and the world’s second

business language. Learn it or improve it for free at IE, through extracurricular classes on

campus.

• Madrid is strategically located in the center of Spain, the core of Europe, connecting all major

Spanish cities and international destinations. You can travel throughout your student years all

around Europe, on short trips with affordable flight fares.

• Madrid is the foremost financial and industrial center of the country. It is home to Spain´s

largest stock exchange, and to important national and international companies.

• Madrid´s geographical location gives it a priceless advantage: an excellent climate. Enjoy

the weather with a pleasant stroll on a sunny winter day, or sit down and enjoy the spring

breeze in one of the many “terrazas” (café terraces).

• Madrid is also known for being a city that never sleeps. Every night you can enjoy hundreds

of shows, bars, restaurants and nightclubs.

• Although Madrid is one of the top 5 cities in Europe, it is distinguished as offering affordable

living and good prices for social, cultural and gastronomic experiences.
