PART – 1 PATH TO KNOWLEDGE
(SANKHYA YOGAJNANA YOGA)
Verse 12 to 38 (27 Verses)
FOCUS NATURE OF SELF
SELF in Everyone is set on a Pilgrimage
identifying
it self with varied forms with limited
Temporary Experiences.
SELE does not come from nowhere and
end up nowhere.
SELF goes through in body of 6 Vikaras
and takes another body after this Body
drops.
Contacts of Sense, with world of Objects
make one go through pairs of opposites.
DWANDHVAS - for a Person who
understand Self, both Polar opposites are
the same.

KARM KANDA SUMMAY Contd. Chapter 2
Nature of SELF contd. Nature of SELF ENDS PART 2 KARM YOGA - PATH of action /
BUDDHI YUKTA
The unreal is only in the Present. THE
REAL SELF is in Past, Present and Future
The REAL SELF is imperishable and
Indestructible
Therefore, In war, neither A is the
KILLER nor others killed as only Body,
drop, SELF is Eternal.
FOR SELF one body to another body is
just change of costume.
Weapons, Fire, Water and Wind cannot
hurt SELF
SELF is stable, Eternal, all pervading,
Immovable and ancient.
Self- unmanifest, unchangeable able and
un-thinkable, so one cannot grieve over
it.
Since birth and death are inevitable, one
should not grieve.
Self is un manifested in the beginning,
un manifested after the end, but may
appear manifested in the middle which is
not true.
Self is the Indweller in the body, a
wonder difficult to
Understand but real. With this Lord K
addresses the ATMA MOHA issue.
Now he goes on to address
SWADHARMA MOHA
Fighting a war is open door to
heaven for Kshatriyas
It is a sin if A abandons a Dharmic
war which is avoidance of duty
He will be treated with DISHONOUR
which is equivalent to death
All will think you are a coward for
getting your valor and heroism of the
past
Enemies also will mock at you
with painful words.
Slain, you will go to HEAVEN,
Victorious, he will get KINGDOM.
Having understood pleasure and
pain, gain and loss engaging in
battle will not amount to sin.
Lord K concludes about ATMA MOHAand SWADHARMA MOHA topics.
Verses 39 to 72
Karma Yoga verses 39 to 53
*Lord Krishna tells A that havingtaught SANKYA he will now teach himWISDOM OF ACTION, which requires asingle pointed determination with resolutenature.
Irresolute minds chasing worldly pleasurepursuits are misfit for MEDITATION &SAMADHI.
Lord Krishna refers to the 3 Gunas and askA to remain in SATVA GUNA (GOODNESS)free from YOGAKSHEMA, Preservation &Acquisition of gains which will causeimpurities of mind.
Stick to Action without a motive forfruits of action or attachment toinaction Steadfast in yoga balanced insuccess and failure - Such a mind isSuperior to a mind dissipated and anxiousfor results of action.

Actions thus performed withevenness of mind will be benefitedby freedom from Punya / Papa -He is Buddhi Yukta - Actionsare guided by clear vision of ahigher divine goal.
Those wise men who haveabandoned fruits of action arefreed from SAMSARA and beyondall Evil.
This is guaranteed when theintellect is purer beyond thedelusions having lost all charm ofsense experiences.
When the intellect comes to asteady equipoise, unperturbed byany experiences that reach thesubtle body through 5Jnanendrias, gateway ofknowledge, then one is consideredhaving attained YOGA.
Verses 54 to 72
Verse 54 - Arjuna Asks a Q
Anxious to know the features of the ones whoseintellect has come to equipoise. What is thedescription of the one who has a steady wisdomand has merged with superconscious state
Lord Krishna's response - Jnani Lakshana
A realised mind has set off all Desires of themind and satisfied in the self by self isSTHITHA PRAJNA
He has reached beyond the veils ofIGNORANCE
He is free from attachment fear and anger,un shaken by adversity and prosperity frompleasures
Does not rejoice good or hates any thing bad

Like a BLIND who does not get disturbedby Beauty of objects
Like a DEAF who will not hear criticism
The untasted unsmelt and unfelt. Senseobjects cannot bring joy / sorrow
His Abstinence repels sense objects
Ignorance of spiritual reality functionsthrough SATVA (inactivity) Rajas(Activity) and Tamas (inactivity) andcauses veiling of intellect (AVARANA) anddisturb Tranquility of mind (VIKSEPA). Awise man overcomes all of these
He is steady and steadfast with sensesunder control.

Chapter - 2 concluded (Jnani Lakshana contd.) Chapter-3 unfoldment through action Chapter-3 cont.
Contemplation of sense objects is the cause of all evils. But a Jnani moves around objects free from attachment and Repulsion to attain PEACE and intellect become steady
No knowledge of self to the unsteady, un-intellect, no meditation, and no tranquil mind to the un-meditated.
- A peace less result.
A meandering Mind is like a wind which swings a Boat and takes a way the sense of Discrimination.
2.69 A Jnani is Awake when it is NIGHT to all Being and is ASLEEP when it is DAY for all BEINGS.
What one sees through GOGGLES of Body / Mind / Intellect is very different from a sage who see through SPIRITUALITY.
A Jnani is at Peace like an ocean which is steady despite many waters entering
Such a Prison without I-ness and My-ness attains PEACE (MOKSA) – Oneness with BRAHMAN.

Verse 2.14 Action is required to keep

- But Jnanis who have realized SELF are

Action without attachment is SUPRENE.
Kings like Janaka practice Action (Duty)
and spirituality simultaneously – as a
leader must A follow too. Lord K refers to
Himself as a charioteer
Even Jnanis perform action LOKA

2.30 Prescription for Ignorant Renounce

Arjuna Q Verses 36
Why people still commit sins against
wishes
Lord K - DESIRE and ANGER are the
FOES who envelop INTELECT
Eg. FIRE / SMOKE, Mirror / dust, womb /
embryo
BEASTS of DESIRE
SENSES, MIND Intellect which veil the
WISDOM. To be controlled in sequence
SENSES- superior to body
Mind – Superior to senses
Intellect – Superior to Mind
ATMAN- Superior to Intellect.
SELF can conquer
CONCLUSION - self-less Actions in a
spirit of DEVOTION and self-surrender as
the key to exhaust VASANAS and prevent
new one.
RENUNCIATION THROUGH ACTION -
42 Verses
Arjuna – Verse 4 – (1)
Lord K. - 1-3, 5-42 – (41)
Focus
Legacy / Sampradaya / Parampara of vedas,
Lord’s Avatar Rahasya, 12 Sadanas to
perform by Yogis – The greater path of
Jnana Yoga, the Main Archway to reach
TEMPLE OF SELF – Darshana of glorious
ALTAR. A karma yogi become FIT from
absorption and assimilation of GREATER
TRUTH – PATH OF knowledge
UPANISHADS – Lord to VIVASWAN to
MANU to IKSVAKU to Royal Sages - LORD K
now gives it to Arjuna
ARJUNA’S Q (verses 4) – How do you
know as you were born much later.
KK5
`
Chapter 4 cont.. Chapter 4 cont.. Chapter 5 KARMA SANYASA YOGA
• Lord K. reveals his AVATAR rahasya, as
manifested through MAYA to establish
DHARMA and annihilate the wicked. Those
who knows this and have freed from
Attachment, Fear, Anger reach Him.
• Lord K. reveals that he is the AUTHOR of
the FOUR FOLD VARNAS based on
GUNAS and karmas, though he is not in
REALITY- He is not the DOER, He is
IMMUTABLE and untouched by their Action.
• Lord K. goes on to explain INACTION IN
ACTION and ACTION in INACTION The
Former are devoid of desires and
attachment – sages - whose actions are
burnt by FIRE of knowledge as the have
abandoned FRUITS OF ACTIONS as well
and also indifferent to pairs of opposites
remaining Even-Minded. He is absolved of
all Actions as he knows – BRAHMAN is the
oblation and clarified butter poured as
offering into fire of BRAHMAN. HE SEES
BRAHMAN in each and every Action.
Lord K elaborates on 12 Yajnas
performed by yogis and SADANAS, -
BRAHMA YAJNA being the High
SADANA (verses 24-30) – what is left
over from Sadanas / sacrifices only
belong to them - Such performers will
be liberated.
Advises Arjuna to do likewise see the
SELF. Even the SINNERS OF SINNERS
will use the RAFT of knowledge to
overcome all SINS. The FIRE of
knowledge will reduce all SINS to
Ashes.
KNOWLEDGE IS THE HIGHEST
PURIFIER – FAITH, followed by
control of SENSES guarantees the
knowledge and Supreme PEACE.
Others the Ignorant, Faithless,
Doubters will not gain this
HAPPINESS. Lord K. ask Arjuna to
Renounce Action By YOGA and
overcome DELUSION.
TRUE RENUNCIATION - 29 Verses
Arjuna – Verses - 1 (1)
Lord K – Verses 2 – 29 (28)
FOCUS give up Actions – KARMA after
Karma yoga perfection and move to
SHRAVANA (Listen) and MANANA
(Reflect on scriptures) giving up DOERSHIP
Arjuna’s Q. Verse – 1
Which is nobler / superior PARTICIPATION
IN ACTION or RENUNCIATION OF ACTION
Perhaps ARJUNA’S Mindset KARMA
meant Ritualism, - yajnas, yagas, homas
etc. SANYASA Meant Renunciation and
seclusion, self – Denial etc.
Lord K explain Yoga of Action is
Superior to Renunciation of Action
KK6
Chapter 5 cont.. Chapter 5 cont.. Chapter 6 All about Meditation
Wise men know and speak of both as
beneficial. They see SANKYAS (Jnanis)
and yogi (Karma yogis) as ONE.
Renunciation hard to attain without
Karma yoga which harmonises and
contemplates / quietens MIND – Makes
one know SELF as non-Doer- seeing,
hearing, smiling, touching, eating going,
sleeping, breathing – All go on as per
their Nature - Like a LOTUS LEAF
UNAFFECTED BY WATER
The well poised united one- having
abandoned fruits of Action attains
external peace. He resides in the NINE-
GATE CITY neither. Acting or causing to
Act.
Sages look at all creation with
SAMADARSHAN – as Equal. (verse
5.18) – they are established as
BRAHMAN neither rejoices nor grieves
with pleasant and unpleasant – Engaged
in Meditation of Brahman. He who still
lives among world of objects without
Desire and attachment is a yogi – Happy
Man – such yogi who is happy within,
rejoices within and illuminates within, attains
Absolute Freedom and becomes BRAHMAN.
– All their sins are destroyed and dualities
are burnt. He is intent on welfare of BEINGS
– LOKA SEVA .
Conclusion - Karm yoga performed in
complete devotion to the LORD and
dedicated to Him– Leads to purity of Mind,
then gives knowledge and then Renunciation
of all Actions and lastly MOKSA.
Lord, now introduce the topic of chapter 6,
DHYANA YOGA – The path of MEDITATION
DHYANA YOGA – 47
Arjuna – Verse 33,34, 37 - 39 (5)
Lord K. Verses 1-32 / 35-36 / 40-47 (42)
FOCUS – NIDI DHYASANA
Lord K concludes his advice on first 5
chapters
- HE WHO PERFORMS HIS BOUNDEN
DUTY without depending on fruits of his
Action is both a YOGI and SANYASI –
verses 6-1
He who has renounced thoughts
KARMA YOGA is an External Aid
(BAHIRANGA SAD HAA) for DHYANA
YOGA.
For a MUNI / SAGE, Action is the means
to yoga. After attaining yoga, inaction is
the means
One who is not attached to SENSE
OBJECTS and renounced all THOUGHTS
Is YOGA RUDHA
Self can be a FRIEND to life ONESELF or
a FOE to lower oneself.
Yoga Rudha who has controlled SELF
through Mental Equipoise is peaceful and
balanced in Heat / Cold, Joy / Sorrow.
KK7
Chapter 6 cont... Chapter 6 cont... Chapter 6 cont...
A yogi who has conquered sense and
remains unshaken with knowledge and
wisdom, who considers GOLD, stone and
Earth, the same. He has attained
NIRVIKALPA SAMADHI. He is
KUTASTHA (Eternal Self) – he treats all
beings alike.
Lord K now goes on to present for the
yoga practitioner, mode of SITTING,
EATING with one pointed Mind,
controlled Mind & Senses with Lord in
his thoughts as supreme Goal. Such a
person will culminate in NIRVANA /
MOKSA. Fully liberated
Recommends / insists on Moderation in
Eating, Sleeping, Recreation, Exertion
etc. (verses 2.12 to 2.17)
Yoga rudha becomes Yoga Yukta
when his perfectly controlled mind free
of desires abides in SELF alone – Like a
non-flickering Lamp in windless
space.
He then feels the Infinite BLISE,
transcending all Senses full abidance in
SELF. Knowing there is no GAIN beyond
this.
This meditation should be performed
with a steady undespairing Mind with
determination.
Gradually one gets STILLNESS and
QUIETITUDE of INTELLECT.
Even if Restless and unsteady, one
should bring the Mind back to SELF
Benefits of the Yoga
He becomes BRAHMAN with supreme
BLISS
free from all sins
sees-ONENESS with all BEINGS
He sees LORD everywhere and never
gets separated from LORD.-
LORD K. says such yogi who sees
SAMENESS, ONENESS – Equality
everywhere
- HE IS THE HIGHEST YOGI.
Arjuna Q. (i) – Verse 33/34.
As this yoga appears difficult, wants to
know
The SUREST way of gaining the Right
knowledge - yoga of Equanimity. (in this
case with RESTLESS MIND) – Also
TURBULENT / and un-yielding.
LORD K. explains how to bring
Invincible Mind under control.
By practice and dispassion
ABHYASA, strengthens
SANYASA (Renunciation)
Which leads to

Chapter 6 CONCLUDE
Arjuna wants to have
complete clarity on this
doubt.
Lord K neither in the birth or
future birth, DOER OR GOOD
will ever come to Grief and
woeful end.
Having followed Righteous
Path but could not complete
yoga, will be born in a pure
and wealthy family. Or even
in a family of wise yogis.
He will continue with the
Incomplete yoga of past birth
where he left and would
persue with perfection. Lord
tries to glorify THE PATH OF
MEDITATION more than PATH
OF ACTION and WORSHIP.
The final fruits of meditation
being SABDABRAHMA – OM
– The SACRED MANTRA.
The yogi who has been
purified from sins perfected
through many births finally
attains the HIGHER GOAL.
Lord K conclude
Such a yogi is superior to
MEN OF ACTION
Men of knowledge
(Sadhus) and also superior
to Ascetics..
The BEST MEDITATION
YOGI FULL OF FAITH with
inner self merged in LORD
and who worship LORD, is
the BEST among all YOGIS.
This is ATMA SANYASA

Pradhana Karma for MUMUKSU – seeker of
Moksha
NISKAMA KARMA – Desireless action
for spiritual growth
PANCH MAHA YAJNAS (spiritual
growth)
1. DEVA YAJNA – Service to Lord through
Pujas, Prayers, Tapas, Temple visits and
Japa
2. PITHRU YAJNA – Reverential service
to forefathers, ancestors
3. BRAHMA YAJNA – Reverential
gratitude to Rishis, Gurus, Acharyas,
Scriptures
4. MANUSHYA YAJNA – Service to
humanity
5. BOOTHA YAJNA – Service to all other
living beings
YOGA – Proper Attitude
SAMATVAM – mental balance to be
cultivated by MUMUKSU
4 Healthy Traits
1. ACCEPTANCE: Learn to accept all
actions and results of actions without
expectations. CHOICELESS ACTIONS and
CHOICELESS RESULTS of all actions
2. NON-COMPARISON: No comparison
with anyone while performing actions
and accepting results. This will disturb
mind and balance.
3. HUMILITY: If one does any noble
action, then THANK GOD for choosing
you as an instrument for that action.
Don’t allow this proud moment to enter
your head. Act HUMBLE.
4. DEVOTION: Dedicate all actions to
Lord. Eswara Arpana Bhava. And accept
whatever be the consequences –
PRASADA BHAVA
Anything that happens in my life is the
result of my own good or bad action,
knowing that God will never be unjust to
me.
A DEVOTIONAL ATTITUDE
The above attitude will lead to INNER
GROWTH called SANSKAR (refinement)
BENEFITS OF KARMA YOGA
1. Main Benefit: Transition from MANDA
to TIVIRA MUMUKSATVAM. From
desire for Artha, Kama & Dharma,
spiritual inclination starts for Goal of
Moksha
2. Spiritual Competence: By practising
Karma Yoga, desire for Moksha leads to
competence / qualification
3. Spiritual Punya / spiritual
opportunity to purse Moksha: It helps
to find a Guru for guidance finally. Once
the first Sadhana of Karma Yoga is
perfected, it leads to UPASANA YOGA,
second Sadhana
B) RAJASA KARMA (MADHYAMA) –
Scriptures permit legitimate actions.
SAKAMA KARMAS – desire driven – for
wealth, family welfare. Contribute to
MATERIAL GROWTH
C) TAMASA KARMA – NISIDDHA
KARMA – Prohibited actions – violent,
cheating, falsehood.
Contributes to retarding of spiritual
growth for Mumuksu

JNANA-YOGA (Final Sadhana for Moksha)
(Giving up dependence and Discovery of SELF and independence) - Chapter 6
SEEK WITHIN
1) Security and happiness can
never be found outside
Develop faith in scriptures
2) Realise that security and
happiness is within us – like
key in pocket.
Dispel ignorance
Obtain knowledge
Discover our own nature -
SELF
A Seeker – MUMUKSU
Seeks FREEDOM but has no
direction to accomplish this
Jignasu: An informed
Mumuksu. He seeks knowledge
and he has direction.
Means of Knowledge
(PRAMANAMS) Primary
Pramanam (instrument)
Direct perception (biochemist &
his data)
Secondary Pramanam
Analysis of direct perception
(doctor & prescription)
But, these two are extrovert. To
study external objects.
To study internal SELF
VEDANTA holds the mirror to
see SELF - Study of subject (not
object)
SASTRA PRAMANAM (Role of
a Guru)
GURU is the key to open
scriptures
GURUMUKHATA VEDANTA
VICHARA
This is Jnana Yoga.
Indirect Knowledge
Through study of scriptures.
May not be enough to study
SELF.
Jnana Yoga and Direct
Knowledge
3 stages
SRAVANAM
MANANAM
NIDIDHYASANAM
Consistent and systematic study
of scriptures for a length of
time under guidance of a Guru.
Not passive but active listening
is
SRAVANAM
Student should have faith in
scriptures and Guru. Keep a
note of questions and ask
towards the end.
e.g., A painter evolves a
painting over a period of time
and cannot explain
intermittently.
MANANAM:
This is the stage for asking all
doubts and questions. This
should go on till one is fully
convinced and no more doubts
remain. Then only, one can go
to next stage of Nididhyasanam.
NIDIDHYASANAM:
Independent of Guru.
Process of dropping dependence
and discovering independence
Learns to live alone
Converting knowledge into
emotional strength
Through Shravanam, Mananam,
Nididhyasanam, one becomes
JIVAN MUKTAH, a liberated
person.

BHAKTI (Devotion / Reverential love to a higher principle – God) Chapter 7
BHAKTI – 2 meanings
A) First Meaning:
Bhakti is devotion to a higher
principle – Nature, Pitru, Guru,
Desa, Iswara Bhakti are our
traditions
1) END LOVE: To accomplish
the End Goals we love to
2) MEANS LOVE: We love the
means we use to accomplish the
ends
3) SELF-LOVE: Loving oneself
Self-love is high intensity
followed by Ends-love and
Means-love
LOVE TOWARDS GOD
(Grades of Devotion)
1. Manda Bhakti (Inferior)
Approaching God seeking
favours only. Conditioned Love –
as Means to End-love
2. Madhyam Bhakti
Because God represents
security, happiness, peace
God as the End
1. Uttama Bhakti
Not to look upon God as Means
or End but as God’s love as
SELF-LOVE
From Manda (dear) to
Madhyama (dearer) to Uttama
(dearest)
A) Second Meaning:
Bhakti becomes a course of
discipline to accomplish highest
goal – Moksha. So, it is
BHAKTI-YOGA
Three-fold spiritual
discipline
Bhakti-Yoga is the name for the
3-fold discipline – KY, UY, JY
BY = KY + UY + JY
KY – dedicate all actions to Lord
and accept, without resistance,
all consequences.
Iswara Arpana Bhava, Prasada
Bhava – So, KY has BY as basis
UY – it is meditation upon Lord
for discipline & integration.
Manasa Puja, Parayanam and
Japam are part of UY
JY – Study of scriptures start
and end with prayers to God.
Also, JY is study of identity of
SELF with God.
This second meaning is a
course of discipline including
KY / UY / JY
A) Object of our Devotion
How can someone love an
unknown, unseen thing, God
First Definition of God:
Behind every product, there is a
designer. So, behind Universe,
we have God as creator –
JAGAT KARTA – ESWARA. We
see him in different forms. But,
he is EKA RUPA ESWARA (for
beginners).
Second Definition of God:
Then, we understand God as
cause for world. JAGAT
KARANA ESWARA. He also
creates raw material for creating
the world. Before Big Bang, no
time / space / material. So, God
himself was the raw material.
E.g., spider and its web. He is
ANEKA RUPA or VISWARUPA
ESWARA.
P-7

First level – God created the world
Second level – God is the world
Now, JAGAT ADHISTHANAM ESWARA – God has become everything.
God appears as the world.
He is the substratum of all forms.
He is not affected by anything.
He transcends all forms of creation.
God is formless – ARUPA ESWARA
God appears as the world – Third level.
ARUPA BHAKTI includes EKA / ANEKA RUPA

TATVA BODHA – SADHANA CHATUSTAYAM (SADHANA VICHARAGA) CHAPTER 8
Four-fold qualifications
A student should achieve these 4-fold
qualifications to study scriptures and to
become
ADHIKARI to pursue especially, Jnana-
Yoga.
1) VIVEKA (Discrimination)
2) VAIRAGYA (Dispassion)
3) SATKA SAMPATTI (Discipline – 6 fold)
4) MUMUKSUTVAM (Desire for freedom)
(1) VIVEKA: Through experience, one
should discriminate between experiences of
PREYAS + SHREYAS
PREYAS – Dependence on external world,
risk, unpredictability, sorrow
SHREYAS – Independence of external
world, internal, peace, harmony
(2) VAIRAGYA: Dispassion towards Preyas
(e.g., pickle) and move to Shreyas (main
dish). Preyas is only a means and not an
end. Sadanam, not a Sadhyam
Shreyas – Growing out of Artha, Kama,
Dharma and moving to Moksha.
(3) SATKA SAMPATTI: 6-fold disciplines.
This is accomplished through UPASANA
YOGA.
SAMA TITIKSA
DAMA SHRADDHA
UPARAMA SAMA DHANA
(4) MUMUKSUTVAM: Once Viveka and
Vairagya are achieved, desire for liberation,
Moksha, will increase. Dropping passionate
hold on Preyas and stretching to Shreyas is
MUMUKSUTVAM
Life of Karma-Yoga will lead to 3
qualifications, Viveka, Vairagya and
Mumuksutvam
(1) SAMA (Mind control)
Regulate and direct our energy. Ichha,
Jnana, Kriya Sakti. Control mind. Like dam
across river, steering in a car.
(2) DAMA (Sense control)
Directing sense organs to our chosen field.
Regulating. E.g., TV channels / remote,
Gandhi’s three proverbial monkeys
(3) UPARAMA (Withdrawal)
Withdraw from being extrovert. Chasing
Artha, Kama, Dharma. Create Time for
Upasana and Jnana-yoga. Focus on growth,
not on enjoyment.
(4) TITIKSHA (Forbearance /
Understanding)
Mental ability to experience pairs of
opposites without getting affected. Body /
mind gets tougher by visiting temples,
Vratams, Tapas, etc.
(5) Shraddha (Concentration)
Faith in spiritual teachings
P-8
Develop faith by worship of God, scriptures and Mahatmas. Mental
worship through reverential attitude and physical worship by
Namaskaram.
(6) Samadhana (Concentration)
Short-term concentration while listening to scriptures and keep
mind on focus.
Long-term concentration is while pursuing ultimate goals like
Moksha. Die with fulfilment, PURNA PURUSHA. Use the body as
a boat to cross ocean of mortality. All types of Meditation, Tapa and
Satsanga are meant for Long-term concentration only.
This 6-fold discipline is acquired through Sadhanas – main being
Upasana Yoga.
Four-fold qualification makes a student an Adhikari – one
who has Sadana Chatustayam.

Topic 1: Verses 1 to 10
Arjuna discovers following:
a) Problems of Samsara – Raga, Shoka,
Moha, Conflict, Attachment
b) Desperation – Karpanya Dosha,
Helplessness, DIE (even suicide) than
FIGHT
c) SWAJANA thought rather than
SWADHARMA
ANUSHTANAM, DELUSION
Ignorance of SELF – ATMA MOHA
I, ME, MINE, SWADHARMA MOHA
Arjuna surrenders to Lord Krishna
Arjuna becomes STUDENT. Lord Krishna
becomes GURU (Jagat).
Lord Krishna-Arjuna Samvadhe starts
TOPIC 2: Verses 11 to 38
Essence of UPANISHADS- SANKYA YOGA
SAD – Sitting UPA-GURU
Ni – Receptive, reverential, Surrender
attitude
YOGA – YUJ – to join to a higher level
BG – Based on VAIDHIKA SANKHYA –
ADVAITA principle – Non Duality
ATMA and Paramatma ONENESS –
Consciousness Principle – where ATMA
makes Body, mind, sense organ complex
(Jada, inert) sensient
FEATURES OF ATMA (SELF)
1) ADRISHYAM – Not an object of
experience
2) ABHODIKAM – Not a matter
3) AGUNATVAM – No attributes
4) ADHIKARATVAM – Changeless
5) ANAGAMAVAYI – Not transient – No
arrival, departures

Section – 2A contd.
Features of ANATMA
Anatma is MATTER (JADA / inert) at
different levels
(A)SAREERA TRAYAM
STHULA SARIRAM – Gross body
(matter)
– From 5 elements. Made up of HEAD,
TRUNK, HANDS, LEGS
Visible / experience-able by
others / us
SUKSHMA SARIRAM – Subtle body
from 5 subtle elements. Made up of 5
sense organs of knowledge
(Jnanedrias) – sense organs of action,
(Karmendrias), physiological systems (5
Pranas), plus Mind (Manas), Chittam
(Memory), Buddhi (Intellect) and
Ahankara (self-identification with body,
mind, sense organ complex (BMS)).
Experience-able by us only
KARANA SARIRAM – Subtlest matter
– unmanifested form – invisible to us /
others. Resolution medium
(B) AVASTHA TRAYAM
Jagrad Avastha – Wake up state,
contacts with external world of objects
Swapna Avastha – Dreaming state.
Mentally create a Dream world
Susrupti Avastha – Deep sleep State
(C) PANCHA KOSAM
1. Annamaya Kosa – Food management
2. Pranamaya Kosa – Energy
management through Ichha Sakti, Kriya
Sakti & Jnana Sakti
3. Manomaya Kosa – Desire
management
4. Vijnana Maya Kosa – Knowledge
management
5. Anandamaya Kosa – Happiness
management (sleep)
All above TRAYAMS constitute ANATMA
(Inert Matter), as per TATVA BODHA
(BG does not cover this in such detail)
Lord Krishna explains
Gross Body goes through 6 Vikaras –
changes
Jayathe – BIRTH, SAISAVAM (SHISHU)
ASTHE – Existence, BALYAM
VARDATE – Growth, KAIMARAM
VIPARNAMATE – Modifies Yavvanam
APAKSH YATHE – Decay, Vardakyam
VINAYASATHE – Death, Maranam
Atma is SASWATHAM. ANATMA (Gross
body) is just a costume for ATMA.
When one body drops, Atma takes
another body, like change of clothes.
So, in the war, neither Arjuna is the
KILLER, nor Kauravas, the KILLED –
Only body goes, Atma continues.
Lord K tries to convince Arjuna from all
3 angles.
Spiritual Angle– Only DEHA (Body) is
killed, DEHI (Atma) remains – AJAHA,
NITHYAM
2-2
Chapter 2 Cont.…
Section – 2A contd. Section – 2A contd. Section – 2A contd.
Dharmic Angle – Being a Kshatriya, he
would be performing his duty to protect
PRAJAS. We should not grieve for SINNERS
who don’t deserve to be grieved for. If he
wins the war, he gets kingdom. If he loses
war, he would go to HEAVEN, having
performed his noble act as a Kshatriya
King.
Loukika Angle – If he avoids war, he will
be insulted as a COWARD. He being a
LEADER and SHRESTA, others may try to
follow him blindly.
ATMA is SAT (Ever Existing), AJAHA
(unborn), NITHYAM (eternal) – In dweller
of body, unlimited existence, SAT CHIT
ANAND
ANATMA (body, mind, sensory organ
complex), ASAT (limited existence), goes
through 6 changes – Samanya
and Visesha Niyamaha (Ageing related
issues)
Goes through SANCHITA PRARABDHA,
AGAMI KARMA, Punya/Papa, Samsara
cycle, Pairs of Joy/Sorrow, Heat/Cold,
Pleasure/Pain, Success/Failure –
DWANDWA – pairs of opposites, temporary
pleasures only
ATMA – Consciousness principle
Original consciousness (OC)
Lends sentience to B / M/ S.O. complex
Atma is the CAUSE – KARANAM
ANATMA - (B / M/ S.O. complex)
Matter Princile
Get energised and activated by ATMA
(OC) and becomes reflected
consciousness (RC)
Is a KARIYAM (effect)
ATMA is CHETANAM
ANATMA is Achetanam
ATMA – Beyond Papa/Punya
ANATMA – Subject to laws of KARMA – as
per accumulated Karmas of many births
(Sanchita Karma)
Conclusion: Section 2A
All are SPIRITUAL BEINGS going through a
HUMAN experience, Temporarily, from the
Lowest to Highest Levels.
I Level – I am the Body
II Level – I am JIVATMA
III Level – I am ATMA
Final – I am PARAMATMA – Oneness with
GOD

KARMA YOGA – Path of Action (KY)
Topic 3
BG is Moksha Sastra. If KY is performed to
perfection with right attitude of devotion, it
will lead to Chitta Suddhi followed by 4-fold
qualifications SADHANA CHATUSTAYA, to
make a spiritual seeker (student) an
ADHIKARI to continue spiritual journey to
acquire Jnana Yoga.
Two Types of KARMA
1. Kamya Karma – Adharmic, unethical,
immoral, desire-driven for KAMA or
ARTHA goals.
2. Niskama Karma – Selfless, desire-less,
permitted actions. NITHYA/NAIMITHYA
Karmas along with Pancha Maha
Yajnas, offered with devotion to GOD,
with an attitude of Eswararpana Buddhi
and without expectations – as Prasada
Buddhi will result in internal
transformation – Chitta Suddhi –
equipoise, equanimity and SAMATVAM,
and facilitate in removal of all impurities
– Raga, Dwesha, Kama, Krodha, Lobha,
Moha, Mada and Matsarya
Immediate / Short Term Benefits of KY
– 4 S’s
1. Serenity: Free from stress
2. Set up Harmony: In society, family,
environment
3. Self-Respect: Feel Good Factor – self-
esteem
4. Spiritual Growth Launchpad for
ultimate goal, JY / Moksha
Long Term Benefits of KY
Desire to listen / study BG (Graduate),
Upanishads (PG) & Brahma Sastra (Ph. D.)
How Does KY Help
Reduction in FIR (To remember as a CODE)
F – Reduces Frequency of disturbances to
mind
I – Reduces Intensity of disturbances
R – Improves Recovery rate to bounce back
again
How To Create a CORPUS of KY
1. Free Mind from Dwandwa (Pairs of
opposites). Leads to VIVEKA
(discrimination)
2. Remain FIRM to practise equipoise –
VIVASAYATMICA – Leads to
VAIRAGYA -Dispassion – I DON’T
WANT
3. Remain FREE from YOGAKSHEMA
(protect existing gains / seek new gains)
4. Remain FIRM for ultimate goal of
Moksha, performing Karmas without
expectations of KARMA PHALA
Pancha Maha Yajna – SATVIKA
Mandatory for Human Beings
1. Deva Yajna – Worship of God in any
form – YAGA (rituals) – photo of idol,
Japa, temple visits – As service to Lord
2. Pithru Yajna – Worship/service to
parents, ancestors. Matru Deva Bhava /
Pithru Deva Bhava with reverence
2-4
Chapter 2 Cont.… Section 2B
Sec 2B – Contd. Karma yoga KY – Contd. KY – Conclusion
3. Brahma Yajna Veda Yajna and Rishi
Yajna. Worship of scriptures and those who
gave these to us. Respect through regular
Parayanams, Sahastranama (reading)
4. Manusya Yajna – Service to humanity,
social service and care of children, elderly
5. Bhuta Yajna – Service to all other
living beings – animals, birds, plants,
forests. Many Gods are depicted having
animals as their Vahana, to stress this
aspect.
All these 5 Yajnas come under
SATVIKA / NISKAMA KARMA.
4 Principles of Pancha Maha Yajna
Mandatory - Niyatham Karma
Thanks giving – Gratitude / Attitude
Dharmaha – Universal Harmony
Purification of Mind – SODHAKAM
These Yajnas are DHARMA MOKSA
PRADANA (For inner growth) and not for
ARTHA KAMA PRADANA (For material
growth) – UTTAMA YAJNAS
RAJASA KARMA
– SAKAMA or desire-driven Karmas. If
they are legitimate, they contribute to
material growth / well-being primarily but
very little for spiritual growth. They are
MADHYAMA KARMA
TAMASA KARMA – NISIDDHA –
Prohibited. Takes one away from spiritual
pursuit. ADHAMAM KARMA (LOWEST)
GOAL of MUMUKSU (KARMA YOGI)
Increase SATVIKA KARMA
Reduce RAJASA KARMA
Avoid TAMASA KARMA
Result – Helps to get SADANA
CHATUSTAYA
KY, with Chitta Suddhi and Sadana
Chatustaya, prepares an ADHIKARI
(Mumuksu) for pursuit of JY through
Shravana, Manana, Nididhyasana.
KY enables a GRAHASTHA ASHRAM
person to move to VANAPRASTHA
ASHRAM stage, through a process –
Code named PORT.
P – Reduce Possessions
O – Obligatory duties to be reduced
R – Reduce Relationships, attachments
T – Reduce Transactions
Preoccupations of mind are reduced,
creating space for spiritual pursuit.
Transition from VISHAYA MOGA to ATMA
MOGA
Ability to transcend
AHANKARA (ego)
MAMAKARA (I, Me, Mine, Body)
Raga / Dwesha – Likes/Dislikes
Understand 5 capsules of Vedanta
1. I am eternal – All-pervading
consciousness
2. I am only source of Happiness (B/M/S.O.
are liabilities)
3. I am Akarta, Abhokta by nature
4. Unaffected by any event
5. Convert Life – Burden to Blessing

TOPIC 4 VERSES 54-72 TOPIC – 4 CONT… CHAPTER 2 A/B – Conclusion
PATH OF DEVOTION – STHITHA
PRAGYA
A Jnani, who has already gone through KY
and JY has 3 titles.
1. STHITHA PRAGYA: Unshaken
knowledge. Firm wisdom
2. STHITHA DEHI: In full abidance of
SELF
3. SAMADISHTAHA: Internal in Samadhi,
meditation
Jnani – Sadana & Lakshana
1. In Samadhi – Stillness of mind,
abidance in SELF
2. Out of Samadhi – Responds to
everyone, No joy / sorrow / anger
3. Back in Samadhi – Disengages
effortlessly as a tortoise
4. Out of Samadhi – Engage with world
(No Me/Mine)
He is like an ancient seed, PARIPURNA
PARAMATMA – Emotional stability – Has
moved from Vishaya Ananda to Atma
Ananda.
Lord K responds to A’s Question – Verse -
54
Jnani has understood and seeker
should know.
ANGER – Temporary insanity
Delusion – Permanent insanity
Knowledge – Anecdote for both
Jnani has understood by practising
VEDANTIC MEDITATION (Nididhyasana)
The Process
SRAVANAM Consistent and systematic
study of scriptures with help of GURU.
Participative not passive Vichara
(Enquiry), With full faith and Shraddha.
Reserve the doubts / questions
MANANAM Doubts clarified till
convinced, Till dependence on GURU
ceases.
Nididhyasana Move to independence,
convert knowledge to emotional strength
Through Shravanam, Mananam,
Nididhyasana, one person gets liberated,
becomes a JIVAN MUKTA
Sravanam and Mananam removes
AHANKARA and MAMAKARA and takes
one to HIGHER I.
Nididhyasana:
Yogasastra refers as THOUGHTLESS
MEDITATION
Vedanta refers to meditation without
stopping thoughts but directing thoughts
MATT PRAHA –
Meditate upon God / Ishta Devatha,
called VAHANA DHYANAM
Two Types of Meditation
1) UPASANA DHYANAM – as part of KY,
depend on Eshwara for peace &
harmony
2) Nididhyasana – Discovery of Eshwara
as SELF
Prescriptions for successful
meditation:
Disciplines Yukta Purushaha (shama /
dhama)
Increase Subha Vasana & decrease
Asubha Vasana

KY – KARMA YOGA – 43 Verses – Unfoldment Through Action
Chapter Contents
Verses Topic
1-7 A’s Questions & K’s Response
8-20 Main Teachings of KY
21-29 Duties of Jnani
31-35 Summary of KY
36-43 Problem Caused by Desire
and Solution
SATVA – Unactivity (contemplative)
RAJAS – Activity (action orientation)
TAMAS – Inactivity (Lazy and Lethargic)
All 3 Gunas are essential for societal
harmony and balance
VAIDHIKA Meaning of Karmas
NITYAKARMA – Daily routine duties
NAIMITYA KARMA – Special occasion
duties
KAMYA KARMA – Desire driven actions –
RAJASIKA – MADHYAMA KARMA
NISKAMA KARMA – Desireless selfless
actions – SATVIKA – PRADHANA
NISIDDHA KARMA – Prohibited actions –
TAMASIKA – ADHAMAN
Niskama (Pradhana) Karma has to be
predominant at start of spiritual
pursuit
A first and dominant Sadhana which can
then lend to JY – Jnanendria Pradhana
It is impossible to achieve JY without
KY
TOPIC 2
KARMA – PROPER ACTION
YOGA – PROPER ATTITUDE
A NISKAMA KARMI acquires 3 out of 4
qualifications as per
SADHANA CHATUSTAYA to become an
ADHIKARI (Yoga Rudha) to pursue JY
VIVEKA – Discrimination
VAIRAGYA – Dispassion
Mumuksutvam – Desire
Besides, a Karma Yogi is mandated to
perform PANCHA MAHA YAJNA
DEVA YAJNA – worship & service to
Lord / DEVAS
PITHRU YAJNA – reverence to
ancestors
Brahma Yajna – service to scriptures
Manusya Yajna – service to humanity
Butha Yajna – service to all beings
Topic 1
Arjuna wants to know – which is better –
Karma Yoga or Jnana Yoga – because of
Krishna’s emphasis for both.
Krishna clarifies that one can not achieve
JY without the preparatory launch pad of
KY, through which one gets CHITTA /
ATMA SUDDHI, which is prerequisite to
pursue JY.
Individuals by nature perform actions
and are restless without actions based
on 3 Gunas.
3-1
Chapter 3 cont.…..
SPIRITUAL PATH is a pilgrimage from
KARMA NISHTA to JIVA NISHTA
YAJNA SHISTA: Once we perform the
Pancha Maha Yajna, by offering reverential
service for the benefits, which we derived,
the residual surplus will accrue to us. Even
Sarira Yatra will become impossible to those
BAHIR MUKTAS – extroverts, who don’t
perform yajnas.
FOUR Aspects of KY
1) Pancha Maha Yajna is MANDATORY.
Those who don’t perform are SINNERS
and will get PAPAM
2) Yajnas are expressions of gratitude
3) KY/Yajnas create a BALANCE in Creation
and ensures HARMONY
4) KY is a PURIFIER OF MIND
FOUR Benefits of KY – 4 S’s
SERENITY. Mental equanimity
because of ESWARARPANA BUDDHI
(dedicate all actions as devotion &
service to Lord) and accept without any
expectations, the Karma Phala with
PRASADA BUDDHI
Eswara Aradhana alone is not enough
S – Self-respect and self-esteem as a
contributor
S – Set up Harmony in Family / Society /
Religions
S – Spiritual growth and desire for
scriptural studies
The ultimate result is SAMATVAM.
Equanimity, equipoise, non-comparison,
humility & work is worship attitude
TOPIC 3
Arjuna wants to know whether Jnanis
should continue to perform KY.
Jnanis having acquired knowledge already
through Jnana Yoga – by performing the
three Sadhanas.
– Sravana, Manana & Nididhyasana and are
liberated, realised souls. - There is no need
for performing Karma Yoga and Pancha
Maha Yajnas – They are desireless (No
Artha Kama Dharma)
However, if they are still living among
family, they may perform 5 Yajnas, not for
themselves but as a Lokha Sangraha,
service to society at large.
It would serve as an example for future
generation.
Jnanis have already given up BONDAGE.
MUKHTA SANGA SAMACHARA

Chapter 3 cont.…..
TOPIC - 4
5 Point Programme of KY
Maintain spiritual outlook with JY /
Moksa as only Goal.
Remember that we are only users &
contributors while Bhagawan is OWNER
and Controller – NIRMANATVAM
Reverential attitude in every secular /
spiritual action – Eshwararpana Bhava
Accept all results readily and willingly –
PRASADHA BHAVA
Maintain a Balance Mind in all
circumstances – SAMATVAM, Equanimity,
Equipoise
SAMATVAM YOGA UCHADE
KY will serve as a KAMADHENU,
KALPAVRIKSHA to satisfy all Purusharthas –
GOALS – ARTHA / KAMA / DHARMA /
MOKSA
If not pursued, a great opportunity of
Human Being Birth would be lost and may
have rebirth among 84lakh species!!
KY is an important component of
COSMIC ORDER / COSMIC CHAKRA
A major contributor and also RECEIVER of
Benefits of cosmic chain.
BEINGS – All Beings
FOOD – Need Annam
Rain – Perijayanthe – required for FOOD
Production
Yajnas – Pancha Maha Yajna –
Performance produces rain (Natural)
KARMA – Right & proper action with
perfect attitude
Vedas – Ever existent – Guide posts for life
BRAHMAN – Ultimate reality
BRAHMAN comes from the root, BRIH,
means to grow, increase, expand
He, as human beings, are directly
responsible for two components of cosmic
chakra – Karma and Yajna. All other
components function on their own by their
nature. We being BENEFICIARY of this
CHAKRA, we need to pay back / pay
forward through Karma Yoga and enjoy
residual surplus – YAJNA SHISHTA.
Lord Krishna advises Arjun to practise KY to
perfection to gain Jnana Yoga opportunity.
3-3
Chapter 3 cont.…..
TOPIC - 4 TOPIC – 4 / 5 TOPIC - 5
Lord Krishna concludes his response to
Arjuna’s enquiry:
One can’t directly perform VIVIDISHA
SANYASA without performing KY to
perfection
1. Karma Yoga and Upasana Yoga are a
MUST to have Chitta Suddhi and qualify
as ADHIKARI after acquiring Sadhana
Chatustaya
2. Perform Pancha Maha Yajna
3. Contribute to cosmic order
4. Only Jnanis are exempt from KY
practices
5. Great kings like Janaka have performed
their duties as king, protecting Prajas,
while following spiritual practices
6. He, as a Leader, Shresta should set
example for his Prajas to follow
7. Lord Krishna quotes his own example of
performing his duties as a charioteer,
washing horses, feeding them, etc.
Lord Krishna has conclusively clarified
that Arjuna cannot skip Karma Yoga
(duty of fighting war to protect Prajas)
and directly perform VIVIDHA
SANYASA. Lord Krishna even chides
Arjuna that he should know where he
stands and what he stands for.
TOPIC 5
Lord Krishna proceeds to explain how to
control and conquer DESIRE, the biggest
hurdle in spiritual pursuit.
The world of objects through our sense
organs may give
Rathi – Delight
Tripti – Satisfaction
Santhrushti – Fulfilment
Jnanis too get ATMA RATHI, ATMA TRIPTHI
and ATMA SANTHRUSHTI by overcoming
DESIRE.
DESIRE (Kama) – If fulfilled, leads to
Lobha (greed). If unfulfilled, leads to
Krodha (anger) and Moha (delusion)
Lobha (Greed) – If fulfilled, leads to
Mada (ego, pride). If unfulfilled, leads to
Matsarya (jealousy)
So, DESIRE is the biggest hurdle to pursue
spiritual path.
3-4
Chapter 3 cont.…..
TOPIC – 5 contd. Conclusion Conclusion
How to Deal with DESIRE at 3 Levels?
Indrayani (S.O. Level) – control sensory
impulses which trigger MIND
Manasa Level – Control MIND which
imagines sensory result and instructs
intellect to act
Buddhi Level – Control Intellect which plans
and executes mind’s instructions
Finally, Knowledge of SELF is the subtlest of
all, to control and checkmate DESIRE.
Jnanis practise
Accept Everything
Reject Nothing
Keep Nothing
Reflect Everything
External Bondage to be detached
The route it follows:
KARMA Papa / Punya Temporary /
Distant Polar opposites Vasanas Birth
and Death cycle of bondage
Internal Bondage
Vasanas Desire Thought Action
KY is capable of blocking / eradicating all
bondages.
Action – at level of body
Thought – at level of mind
DESIRE – at level of intellect
KY practised to perfection with right
attitude can lead to Actionless,
Thoughtless, Desireless & Vasanaless
life of purity.

WAYSIDE GOAL – Actionlessness may
lead to Desirelessness, just a by-product
INACTION IN ACTION
Those who see action in inaction and
inaction in action are truly wise among
humans. Although performing all kinds of
action, they are Yogis and Masters of their
Action.
Karma Yogis execute all social duties
without attachment to results, dedicating
fruits of action to God. Although engaged in
action, they are not entangled in Karmic
Reactions. No motive for enjoyment. E.g.,
Dhruv, Prahlada, Yudhistra, Ambarish.
Therefore, their Actions are called
INACTION – AKARMA.
ACTION IN INACTION
There are those who give up their social
duties physically, out of indolence. But,
mind is continuing to interact with world of
objects through sense organs. They appear
lethargic and inactive but are sinfully Active.
Thus, Lord K informs Arjuna that
shying away from war will be SINFUL
and would result in Hellish REGIONS
for such Inaction.
Jnani, having given up Karma phala and
knowing he is AKARTHA, ABHOKTA is
engaged in action without all attachments
or desire. E.g., STEAM drives steam engine
train but it remains where it is. He has
discovered SELF. Does not generate Papa /
Punya or concerned with polar opposites –
DWANDWA.
His Action Has Become INACTION. This
is Jnana Karma Sanyasa Yoga –
Karma Sanyasa in knowledge of self
Divine duties of Jnanis (DEIVA YAJNAS),
Means of Worship (12 Sadhanas)
1. Devayajna – includes Pancha Maha
Yajnas
2. Brahma Jnana Yajna – SAKSHAT SELF
OFFERING (considered the BEST)
3. SAMYAMA YAJNA – Saguna Upasana,
offering senses or mind (Dharana)
4. Outside SAMYAMA – offering
Sense objects, e.g., sound
5. Nididhyasana Yajna – Atma Sanyama
Yajna.
6. Draviya Yajna – offering austerity,
vows
7. Tapas Yajna – offering study of
scriptures
8. Swadadhya Yajna – Daily recital of
slokas
9. Yoga Yajna – breath control
10 Jnana Yoga – understand meaning of
recitals
11. Sanchita Yoga – pursue an objective,
e.g., BUDDHA, Gandhi
12. Pranayama Yajna – regulate all 5
pranas
Inaction in Action will destroy delusion. The
fire of knowledge of self will reduce all
Karmas to ashes (Sanchita, Prarabdha,
Agami, Prayachitha, etc.)
Shamshaya Atma will not get knowledge.
Those with FAITH and SHRADDHA will get
liberation.
NOT BEING THE DOER BY DOING is Jnana
Karma Sanyasa Yoga.
4-2
Chapter 5 KARMA SANYASA YOGA – True Renunciation – 29 Verses
Content Focus
Arjuna’s question:
Which is better – Karma Yoga
(Participation in action) or VIVIDISHA
Sanyasa – knowledge with direct
experience – APROKSHITA JNANA through
Shravana / Manana / Nididhyasana
(Renunciation of action) – leading to TAT
VAT JNANA (samsara destroyed – no
rebirth) and subsequently giveup those
three Sadhanas (S/M/ND) and proceed to
Vidvat Sanyasa (a higher level), full
abidance in SELF. Arjuna thinks he can
avoid war, by skipping Karma Yoga
which requires – performance of his
duty – SWADHARMA
Lord Krishna hints to Arjuna that he should
know where he stands and what are his
qualifications for spiritual pursuit. Even an
ignorant person can pursue VIVIDISHA
SANYASA,
but he should become a qualified ADHIKARI
first with SADHANA CHATUSTAYA (VIVEKA,
VAIRAGYA, 6 discipline – Shat Sampatti)
and Mumuksutvam. For this, one has to
perform Karma Yajna essentially.
Karma Yoga and Karma Sanyasa Yoga
(VIVIDISHA Sanyasa) are not 2 distinct
paths – one follows the other sequentially.
Even Karma Yoga has a component of
Renunciation – namely, not expecting
results of actions performed as
Devotion and Dedication to Lord and
accepting Karma phala willingly.
Correct spiritual path
Perform KY to perfection become a
VISUDDHATMA
(very pure with Satvik Guna and less Rajas
and Tamas Gunas) -> then become VIJITA
ATMA with SHAMA (mind control) and
Jitendria Atma (control of senses),then
ADHIKARI after Shat Sampatti (6
disciplines) and Mumuksatvam (desire).
Then only one becomes qualified to perform
KARMA SANYASA YOGA (VIVIDISHA
SANYASA) to become a MUNI – SARVA
BHUTATMA, free from Ahankara,
Mamakara, Karthrutva, Bhoktatva - Leading
to Realisation of SELF.
Only a Jnani is harmonised & realises that
the 5 Jnanendrias, 5 Karmendrias, 5 Pranas
and Upapranas are all doing their function
by their NATURE, as DOERS. Jnani knows
he is a
5-1
NONDOER – AKARMANI AKARTHA –
untouched, unconcerned, unperturbed by all
actions going around. A Jnani who has
already performed KY to perfection with an
attitude of devotion to GOD. Sacrificing
results, has already attained mental purity,
becomes a VIVEKA YUKTA, gets qualified
with Sadana Chatustaya, then goes to
perform S / M / ND (Renunciation of Action)
leading to VIVIDISHA SANYASA.
SANYASA is two sides of same coin –
CONCENTRATION & RENUNCIATION.
On other hand, an AJNANI, extrovert,
engaged in pursuit of world objects, desires
Adrista (invisible) and distant Karma phala –
Papa / Punya, not knowing when they will
fructify – goes through polar opposites
DWANDHWA – leading to Samsara, Punaravi
Jananam / Maranam cycle.
UPANISHADS permit any one at any of
the Ashrams, Brahmachari / Grahastha /
Vanaprastha to pursue spiritual path and
acquire Sadana Chatustaya to become
ADHIKARI to pursue spiritual path.
PADMA PATRA IVA AMBA
A Jnani remains untouched as a Non-Doer
similar to LOTUS in water where water
forms droplets only on the LOTUS LEAVES.
A TATVAT JNANI performs also actions
easily and effortlessly, without attachments
as he is neither a Karta or Bhokta.
SANYASA is not a physical escapism but a
mental withdrawal from all unintelligent
thoughts, which results in joy, peace &
contentment – in his CITY OF NINE GATES
(DWAR) – 2 eyes, 2 nostrils, 2 ears, 1
mouth, 1 genital & 1 Excretionary opening).
Like a king whose ministers perform all
actions in his presence but without his
involvement – Sanyasi knows that his Atma
is present and just witnesses all actions.
Three Stages
Jiva Bhava – Doer / Enjoyer stage
Karma Yogi – Above will be weakened
Karma Sanyasa – Above will be
renounced completely after the 3 sadanas S
/ M / ND, will get Aparoksha Jnana (direct
experience)
Jnani – is a Loka who just sees the world
of objects.
5-2
Chapter – 5 Contd….
He is not a Karta Karayita (does not cause
action), not a Bhokta Bhojaita (does not
cause enjoyment). Jnani is aware all are
happening by their functions naturally –
SUBHAVA PRAKRUTI as per 3 Gunas.
PRABUHI – a name by which Jnani (DEHI)
is referred to in NAVA DWAR
Jnani emerges as PURE SELF, like sunlight
emerging through a clear, flawless,
colourless plain glass.
Ajnanis – Like a pencil of light through a
prism, splitting into multiple rays in a world
of PLURALITY.
Jnani has absolute vision – PARAMARTHA
DRISHTI – as against normal vision –
VIVAHARA DRISHTI
KNOWLEDGE is not a new creation to be
discovered. It is removal of ignorance to
reveal itself. Like light removes DARKNESS
to reveal objects, sunlight behind the
clouds.
Removal of VEIL of ignorance – AVARANA
– one needs a SATVIKA BUDDHI to
comprehend knowledge which is infinite.
Jiva Mukti with body in place and
VIDEHA MUKTI (KAIVALYA) with body
departed – both have realised SAME
TRUTH about knowledge. Having
attained JIVA BRAHMA AIKYA, they
look upon all Beings as EQUAL, with
same VISION – SAMA DARSHANA –
same like OCEAN not differentiating waves;
GOLDSMITH not valuing Vigraha of different
Gods differently. Equal vision is
HALLMARK of Realisation.
Jnani believes in ONENESS & maintains
EQUANIMITY under all conditions. He is
indeed a BRAHMAN – DIVINE & ETERNAL.
He has no ignorance, no delusion, no
DWANDHWAS.
He has STHIRA BUDDHI.
Like an artist looking at his canvas, near
and far, Jnani has EQUIPOISE in the canvas
of his HEART.
Just a DREAMER throws away his dream
personality, a Jnani has detached himself as
a RENUNCIATE from world of objects and
outside world and disconnected from Body,
Mind and Intellect and lives in his Inner
space, Joy of ETERNAL SELF through his
VIVEKA and VAIRAGYA.
How to cultivate VIVEKA and Vairagya
1) Understand that pleasure (not
happiness) derived from sensory
impulses from world of objects is subject
to LAW OF DIMINISHING RETURNS. As
quantity of objects go up, quantity of
pleasure goes down. It has Adi and Anth
just tickling of senses.
5-3
2) Do not yield to Push & Pull for sensory
impulses as they provide momentum to
Desire and Anger. Before body falls, we
should learn to control KAMA & KRODHA and
have mastery over them.
If our BUDDHI cannot conquer, then we
are no different than Animals without
BUDDHI.
TRUE, STEADY and Permanent Happiness
is possible only then. This is NIRVANA.
Cessation from all sorrows. This is not just
a FLICKER. This is Absolute.
SHANTHAM SHIVAM SUNDARAM
Realisation is not just a melancholic journey
towards an ALTAR or tomb, but an enjoyable
ride towards the PALACE OF TRUTH.
Loka seva becomes his self-appointed
engagement.
This is Absolute freedom.
BRAHMA NIRVANAM
This is KARMA SANYASA YOGA – VIVIDISHA
SANYASA – Renunciation of all SADANAS like
Karma Yoga, Sravana, Manana, Nididhyasana
after attaining purity of thought and mind.
Yoga of true renunciation ends with
SANKALPA VAKYA – OM TAT SAT – That
is the TRUTH.
5-4
Srimad Bhagvad Gita (SBG) – Chapter 6ATMA SANYASA YOGA (Dhyana Yoga – Nididhyasana) – 47 Verses
(Verses 1 – 4)
From Karma Yoga stage to next level –
Yoga Rudha (YR)
Possible only if following three aspects are
absent:
SAMPURNA SANKALPA - Absence of
hallucinations, imaginations about
sensory impulses and absence of
DELUSION that happiness is outside
Giving up desire & wants for world of
objects through sensory experiences
Giving up any attachment to actions
prompted by sensory impulses
Verses 5 to 12
KY is launch pad for Yoga rudha, through
Sadana chatustaya – VIVEKA, VAIRAGYA,
Satka Sampatti and Mumuksutvam. After
Yogarudha stage, one can become Yoga
Yukta through Dhyana Yoga
(meditation)
Yoga Yukta is Jnana (through scriptures)
– indirect – Parokshat Jnana plus
Vijnana (special knowledge) through
Direct Experience – APAROKSHA JNANA
At Yoga Yukta stage, one gets united
with nature, looks at all beings with
equipoise, with Sama Buddhi, eight
kinds of people – all treated equal.
EIGHT KINDS OF PEOPLE
SUHRUT – Helps without expectations
MITRA – Sneha who voluntarily help on
their own
Ari – Who hate, harm and hurt for no
reason of yours
DWESHYA – Revengeful, “Tit for Tat”
attitude
UDASINA – Unconcerned, indifferent
MADHYASTA – Arbitration attitude
SADHUSHU – Noble acts as per Sastras
PAPESHU – Ignoble, violates Sastras
Yogarudha to Yogayukta through
meditation
Conditions:
Asana – posture
Solicitude
Solitary – alone
Clean place
Posture – straight back
Then, ATMA VISUDDHI is possible
Dhyana Yoga (verses 13 to 32)
Shutting down all external contacts
Fix the gaze as if between the two eye
brows
Equalise incoming and outgoing breathe, in
the nostrils
Control mind, thoughts and Buddhi
6-1
Chapter 6 contd..
Verses 13 to 18
Yogarudha – optimum level for spiritual
pursuit through ANTARANGA SADHANA
(by us) through Shravana, Manana,
Nididhyasana
Route
YR plus S / M / ND YY (Jnana + Vijnana)
Tripti (fulfilment)
DHYANA YOGA – Give up possession and
desire for possession.
Matt Chitaha / Mat Paraha.
Mind focussed on Lord as SUPREME
GOAL. Converge all ENERGIES for Higher
Level Pursuit in a Sthiram, Sukham
posture.
One will reach YogaYukta stage with
heart and mind to one point –
Ekangrata

5 stages of mind during meditation
1) KSHIPTA – Rajas – agitated – can’t
meditate
2) MUDHA – Tamas – lazy, lethargy,
drowsy, dull – can’t meditate
3) VIKSHIPTA – Moving from Rajas to
Satva slowly – still can’t meditate
4) EKANGRA – Mind now starts
NIDIDHYASANA – single pointedness –
SARVIKALPA Samaddhi – absorbed in
single thought – Samprejnata Samaddhi
– awareness that I AM SELF / ATMA –
AHAM BRAHMASMI
5) NIRVANA VIRUDDHA – Cessation of
single thought also – NIRVIKALPA
SAMADHI – This is Consciousness
Principle – Final stage
Possible with moderation in lifestyle,
eat, sleep, etc.
Verses 19 to 36
Process
Many thoughts to single thought to no
thought
Like, starting to sleep and ending in deep
sleep (TAMAS stage)
NIRUDDHA NASHA stage - Mind dissolves
in causal body, cessation of mind (TAMAS –
Laya stage)
In Meditation, all objects cease, awareness
remains.
NIRUDHA AVASTHA stage –
consciousness
YogaYukta – Nirvikalpa stage – like a lamp
not fluctuating without wind – NISCHALA
stage
A state of Ultimate Bliss –
PARAMANANDAM
SATYAM JNANAM ANANDAM RAHASYA
6-2
Chapter 6-3
NIRUDHA AWASTHA – No more sorrows.
Mission accomplished. This is Yoga
Sangnitam – no modifications.
VIYOGAM – freedom from sorrow and
delusion
Tips for successful meditation
Give up Sankalpa – attachment
Give up Kama – desires
Verses 27 to 32
4 Levels of Meditation Process
I Level: Mind should stop expressing itself
through senses – 5 Jnanedrias and 5
Karmendrias
II Level: Drop desire by analysing whether
this desire helps me at all – through VIVEKA
(discrimination – stop wanting)
III Level: Drop the I aspect – I, the
individual - body
IV Level: Experience COSMIC sense of
AM-NESS
Buddhi (intellect) and DRITHI (will) are our
two friends to achieve this final meditation
level. Amalgamate these two – like car
driving in a fog, put the fog lights ON and
stay put till VASANAS (KASHAYAS) clear out.
A Yogi, then has PRASHANTHA MANASAM –
Nirsuddha. Rajas has ended. He is in
Super Satva State – State of SHUBHAM
UTTAMAM (Brahma Bhutam)
ROUTE
KY YR S / M / ND
YY superior VAIRAGYA NIRUDDHA
BRAHMAN Bhutam NIRVIKALP SAMADHI
He becomes KARUNA SAGARA – sees
himself in all Beings, All Beings in his SELF.
Like seeing water in all waves, waves in
water.
Yogi is NITYA SUDDHA MUKTA (Dhyana
Yoga Topic Ends)
Verses 33 to 37
AHAM BRAHMASMI thought puts an end to
VIPAREETHA BHAVA and IGNORANCE. You
are SARVATMA BHAVA and look at world
as SARVESHWARA BHAVA – Even at this
stage, some residual Vasanas may surface
but superior VAIRAGYA can destroy Vasana
Kashaya / Mano Nasha Vasana, instantly.
This stage is TATVA Jnana Stage
JIVAN MUKHTA Stage
Such a Yogi is called PARAMA YOGI –
Samsara destroyed once for all.
6-3
Chapter 6-4
Verses 38 to 39
Big Question: Can this stage be
sustainable ever? – Lord K answers.
Difficult, Dur Nigraha but possible,
through Abyasa (practice). Try NAI
RAMTRIYA with SATKARA (Love). Prayasa
will give Para Vairagya. E.g., A small
Jockey can lift a heavy car.
Verses 40 to 47
Lord Krishna clarifies Arjuna’s Question –
what happens when one following spiritual
pursuit meets with death, without
completing S / M / ND, KY / UY, etc.
Spiritual path may be cut short because of
Time insufficient
Life cut short, Praradha over
Vasanas blocking
Vairagya not reached
Does he get Ignoble Death?
He is Yoga BASHTA, Lord Krishna clarifies.
For such a person who has done an
Auspicious Act of following SPIRITUAL
PATH,
No VINASHA
No Ignoble End
No Durgadhi
But will get SATGADHI only. Such a
JIVATMA, even if KY / UY incomplete, will
be given chance to complete S / M / ND in
one of the UPPER LOKHAS till all vasanas
are completed.
He will be born in a family of nobles or a
family of Yogis and restart from where he
left in previous birth.
This explains child prodigies we come
across in life.
Lord Krishna concludes
Spiritual practice in life would never get
wasted. Yogis are in fact superior even to
Jnanis and Tapaswis.
NOTES
1) For a Muni or Sage who wants to attain
Yoga, Action is his Means.
2) For a Sage with yoga, inaction is the
means (quiescence)
3) KUTASTHAH – A term used for eternal
self, means ANVIL. The Hammersmith
places red hot iron on ANVIL and
hammers it to shape but ANVIL remains
same and resists all modifications.
4) Jnana – Book knowledge
Vijnana – direct realisation of what is
thought in books
NO WOEFUL END FOR DOER OF GOOD
performed with DEVOTION,
DEDICATION, WORSHIP

Creates AVARANA
These BHAVAS know that they are
connected with LORD – They are in LORD
but LORD not in them – untouched by
them.
Verses 13 to 16:
The veil of MAYA covering PARAKRUTI is
difficult to be removed, in the absence of
VIVEKA – knowledge of PARAKRUTI.
Those who are MUDHAS, deluded, sinners,
with hypocrisy, arrogance and krodha can
never reach GOD.
Connect with GOD
Putting hands together as NAMASTE, it is
PRAPATI MUDRA. A nature of surrender to
GOD, oneness with GOD, connect with
GOD.
3 Types of SAKAMIS (with desire)
ARTHA – Pray to rid of sorrow
Jignasa – Pray to know GOD
ARTHARTI – Pray to get wealth, etc.,
Artha – Draupathi seeking Krishna's
help
Artharthi – Sukriva for kingdom
Jignasu – Beyond Artha, Artharthi – To
know GOD
ALL ARE DEVOTEES WITH DESIRES
Highest Devotee – JNANI - NISKAMI –
without DESIRE
Pray for UNION with GOD – NARADA,
Meera, Prahlada, Yudhistra
All 4 together- CHATUR VIDA –
The four types of devotees
Verses 17 to 23
Jnanis SUDDHA BHAKT.
GOPIKAS Higher than Jnanis –
PARAMA BHAKTHA
JNANIS are SUKRITANA – know
they are one with GOD, Dear to GOD,
never disconnect with GOD.
EKA BHAKTAS – No love for anything
else. They know BHAGWAN is
SARVAM VASUDEVAM.
Those who are not ready for unfoldment
are DUSUKRITANAHAS.
VASU – To pervade
DEVA - consciousness
Jnanis are also MAHATMAS – very
rare SUDURLABHA.
Those who get connected to
SUDRADEVA (not VASUDEVA)
become slaves of PRETHAS,
PISHASHUS, by performing rituals.
Verses 24 to 28
Even those with SATVIKA,
RAJASIKA, TAMASIKA prompted
desires can be DEVOTEES. E.g.
SATVIKA –Indra
Rajasika – Kubera
Tamasika – BoothaPisashu
Those following SUDRA Devathas
can never reach Him because of
MAYA (Ignorance)
7-2
Pre-condition
Love and Devotion to GOD is possible
only if one ACCEPTS THINGS AS
THEY COME AND REMAIN
UNATTACHED.
One should do what is right and not
what he likes.
LORD K explains further:
One who knows me as follows will
know everything about me.
ADHI BHUTA – pertaining to
the elements, world of objects
ADHI DAIVA – pertaining to all
devathas and sense organs
ADHI YAJNA – pertaining to all
sacrifices, Sadanas and perceptions -
Should know this even at time of Death.
Conclusion – Verses 29 to 30
Summarises as a prelude to Chapter 8.
8 ASPECTS – Primary Teachings
1. Jijnasus – Who take refuge in ME, know
ME as that BRAHMAN as their own SELF,
devoted to TAT.
2. They know ME as ADHYAMAM,
entirety of SELF / BODY / MIND /
Intellect
3. They understand all Sadhanas to be
performed – AKILAM KARMAS – Karma
Yoga, Guru Upasadana, Shravana,
Manana, Nidhyasana
4. They know ME as ADHI BOOTHA,
pertaining to elements and objects
5. They know ME as ADHI DEIVA,
pertaining to sense organs and GODs
6. They know ME as ADHI YAJNA,
pertaining to all sacrifices and
perceptions
7. They know ME even at TIME OF
DEATH, Prayana Kola, steadfast
in mind
8. They come to know
EVERYTHING (MANU)
In Chapter 8, ARJUNA will seek
clarification on all of above 8
aspects.

VERSES 17 TO 28
Brahma Lokha – Abode of KARYA BRAHMAN. Even one with AHAM GRAHA UPASANA, has to return for rebirth. However, if UPASANA was performed with Devotion to LORD and not for pleasure, then he will have UNION with LORD and no Punar Janma.
BRAHMA LOKHA (BL) –Two Paths
Verses 17-19 - Return Path
Verses 20-22 - No Return Path
1. Return back to Rebirth
Brahma Lokha is limited by time.
One day of Brahma – 1000 yrs
One night of Brahma – 1000 yrs
Brahma's age (BL) 43,20,000 (1
Mahayaga) x 1000 x 2 times
(day & night) x 365 days x100
(years)
Now Brahma is in middle age (51 yrs)
At end of 100 years, BL dissolves
in Eshwara (Maya)
PRALAYA, End of Hiranya Garba
Entire collection of BEINGS (AVYAKTA),
manifested and unmanifested, will
return to take rebirth as per KARMAS,
process of DISSOLVE and CREATION
(NATMITIKA)
2. PARAPRAKRITI – higher level
NITHYA PRALAYAM (1)

Into Maya of Eswara
8-2
Verses 23 to 29
A) DEVA YANA PATH
There is only one MUKTI through path of BHAKTHI but
Different names JIVA MUKTI, KREMA
MUKTI
KREMA MUKTI (after death, 2 paths) DEVAYANA – To
highest level of divinity
A RADIANT PATH – After performing Karma yoga and
Upasana yoga to perfection
Non return Vrithi Path

day (AHAHA), Shukla (Bright fortnight Poornima), Deity of
Uttarayana (6 months), (SHUKLA MARG)
B) PITRU YANA – Krishna Marg - A dark path –
AVRITHI PATH
(Return to birth path). Goes to SWARGA LOKHA – By those
who have performed Karma yoga only. Poorta Karma – noble
actions – Assisted by Deity of smoke, deity of night, deity of
Dakshinayan (6 months), dark fortnight of moon Will stay till all
punyas are exhausted, Then, return back to earth
Realm of mortals
FINAL DEVATHA for DEVA YANA PATH
PRAJAPATHI will reach Karya Brahma, reach HIRANYA
Both Paths are SASWATHA, ever there Luminous Shukla Path
and Dark path – Krishna Marg
LORD K advises:
Not knowing we are on which path; one should not get deluded but
remain steadfast in devotion to GOD.
One who has understood all 7 features of LORD, will reach higher
realm, PARMA STHANA, Ultimate abode. This is guaranteed by
Srutis and Smiritis.
This chapter focussed on VIVAHARIKA
contemplation through UPASANA, AHAM GRAHA UPASANA, in 3
realms of Gross, Subtle and Causal.
8-3
Introduction
Focus on Chapters 7 & 9
Realisation of nature of LORD
PARAMARTIKA
NIRGUNA BRAHMAN
JNEYA BRAHMAN
BRAHMAN
Focus on Chapter 8
Contemplation of nature of LORD
VIVAHARIKA
(Transactional) – SAGUNA BRAHMAN
UPASANA of SAGUNA BRAHMAN leads to
KARMA MUKTI
Knowledge of NIRGUNA BRAHMAN
leads to JIVAN MUKTI – Hence
Nirguna Brahman is never
worshipped, it is our own reality,
OURSELF, SAT CHIT ANAND. It is
formless. No attributes.
BHAGWAN (ESHWARA) = NIRGUNA
BRAHMAN + MAYA
Verse 1 to 3
BG is an instrument, PHEMYA KARANA
Pramanam – To gain knowledge.
It is BRAHMA TATWAM
KRAMA MUKTI – Gradual liberation
JIVA MUKTI – Through Bhagvad
TATWA, is instant liberation
LORD K wants to grant royal secret to
ARJUNA because:
Arjuna is ASUYA (Not jealous) and
ANUSAYA (does not find fault) and is
interested in ANAND PRAPTI,
AJNANA / DUKHA NIVARTI
it is called Royal Secret because it is
UTTAMA, PAVITRA (PURE). Arjuna
can see it for himself, PRATYA KSATA
- Method is easy, SUSUKHAM
Results will be AV YAYAM, permanent,
no decay.
Verses 4 to 8
JAGAT – gross / subtle /
causal – PRAPANCHAM
JA – Jayate – Birth
GA – GATCHATNE – Dissolves
TA – TISHTOTE – stays for some time
All these reside in LORD
VYAKTA – Manifested / perceived
AVYAKTA – Substratum, not perceived,
imperishable
4 statements by LORD
1. I PERVADE ALL – SAT CHIT ANAND
– unmanifested form
1. ALL BEINGS ARE IN ME – I am the
substratum – All beings and world are
in ME
2. I AM NOT IN THEM – I am
untouched by them – I am not subject
to changes, I remain unaffected by
them, I support them
3. They are not in ME – This is my
LORDLY nature, VAIBHAV
(Secret)
e.g., ROPE pervades SNAKE. SNAKE is on
ROPE. ROPE is untouched by SNAKE.
SNAKE is not on ROPE (No SNAKE –
illusion)
Means,
In ignorance, we see manifestations.
In knowledge, we see reality
Chapter 9 RAJA VIDYA and RAJA GUHYA YOGA – Royal Secret – 34 verses / 116 pages 9-1
BHAGWAN is both the creator and the
creation (e.g., spider spins its own web)
ABHINNA – Same, not different
NIMITHA – Material
UPADANA – (Efficient)
KARANA – (Cause)
e.g., Clay is material cause, Potter is
efficient cause
BHAGWAN is both Material and Efficient
Cause
Air moves violently in Space, AKASH. But,
AKASH remains untouched by VAYU
At the end of a Life Term, KALPA; all
beings dissolve in PRAKRITI and I send
them back at the beginning of next
KALPA, to return as MAYA,
manifestations.
LORD K says
I ANIMATE, VITALISE, ENERGISE the
PRAKRUTI again and again.
SAT – Never comes to end, Always
there
ASAT – Could be experienced
NITHYA – Neither SAT nor ASAT,
Comes to end
MAYA – ANIVACHANYA, can't explain
Verses 9 to 12
BHAGAWAN does not do any action by
himself, but through agency, MAYA. He only
energises and invigorates MAYA by his sheer
presence.
MAYA covers Bhagawan (AVYAKTA) like a veil
(AVARANA).
Ignorance covers Truth and obscures the
difference between REAL and UNREAL.
LORD says
SHRISTI – creation
STHITHA – sustaining
LAYA – destruction
All these do not bind Him
They relate to COSMOS
He is UDASINAMATHI (indifferent) He is
just witness, Consciousness – SAKSHI
He accepts everything, rejects nothing
Reflects everything, keeps nothing,
like a mirror, indifferent to all that
goes on.
MAYA acts automatically in
His presence
LORD K laments that many have not
understood that he is AVATAR
(PARAMBHAVAM) and not a human
being. Such persons get into
RAKSHASHA NATURE (Tamasika and
wicked) and ASURA NATURE (Rajasika,
always tickled by senses and desires).
They are seized by MOHINI, deluding
nature, full of hallucinations, only vanity
and no spirituality in them. Their whole
life is in vain. Only Satvika nature helps
spirituality and lead them to
MAHATMAS. The Rakshashas and
Asuras are DURATMAS.
9-2
Verses 13 to 19
Lord extols virtues of MAHATMAS
Good hearts, big ANTAKARNA
Accommodative and accept others without
intolerance
Therefore, Devi Prakruti - DIVINE
NATURE, Mind is SAMSKRUTA
They know God as AKSHARA
(imperishable), AVYAYAM, source of all
beings
Ananya Mana – United with God
Listen to GURU at his LOTUS feet with
pure intent, revel in Kirtans of GURU
Practice Shravana and Manana, digesting
what they listened and learnt, with clarity
and understanding, like a cow which takes
food in bulk and chews slowly, with all
qualities of Sadhana Chatustaya
VIVEKA and VAIRAGYA. STHITHA
(Firm), like Harishchandra for truth,
Mahatma for Ahimsa, Sri Rama for
obedience
This will lead to knowledge of AHAM
BRAHMASMI, the BHAKTI way of devotion,
prostration before LORD
Lord K suggests a way different from
Shravana, Manana and Nididyasana for
those who can't take this route
3 Types of Jnana Vijnana
1. (UTTAMA VENI ) EKATVENA:
Through oneness with GOD. Consider the
5 elements, Sun / Moon (cosmic
luminaries) and JIVAs as ASHTA
MURTHI
2. PRUTHAKTVENA: This is PRATIKA
UPASANA, worship Lord in any form,
Ram, Krishna, etc This is called MADHYA
VENA
3. BAHUTHA VISWATHOMUKA: Pray
manifold manifestations of GOD including
Indra, Vayu, Jal, Agni, etc. After the above
3-2-1 route, they can still perform Shravana,
Manana, Nididyasana with attitude of
Niskama Karma (ADAMA VENA)
Verses 16-19
Lord concludes: I AM everything
EVERYTHING is ME. There is nothing beyond ME. Explains His Forms. I AM KRATU – Bhoktha and Prabhu of 5 YajnasSWADHA – Offerings to PITHRU AUSHADA – Herbs, medicines, fruits Mantraha – ChantingsAgni – Fire
HAVANA KRIYA – Action of offering FATHER of this worldMother of this worldKARMAPALA DATA – Grandsire of sustainingPURIFIERSyllable OM
VEDA – All 4 vedasGATHI – Goal
Bharti – NourisherLORD, ABODE, SHELTER
ORIGIN - PrabhavaDissolution – PRALAYA Foundation – STHANA BEEJAM – SeedAKSHARA – Imperishable
Now LORD K says, what he does
SUN – Provide heatCloud – To create rain Nectar – in a fruit
Death and Immortality
SAT and ASAT Invisible and Visible
9-3
Verses 20 to 22
Lord K refers to SAKAMA KARMIS
(desire, motivated)
Will remain in realm of Punar Janma
Worship Vasu, Rudra, Aditya, Sudra
Devathas, custodians of elements, i.e.,
to obtain SOMALATHA JUICE. To
perform rituals to reach SWARGALOKA,
for pleasure not for Chitta Suddhi and
Bhagwan Bhakthi
If they perform all such acts with rules
as per 3 vedas, they will still go to
Indra Lokaa to enjoy their PUNYA
currency
After this brief vacation, they will
return to SAMSARA cycle
They just get GATAGATAM
(temporary)
They ignored VEDA VIHITA KARMA to
go to higher Goal Veda/Vedanta teach
us – To think This and THAT, and not to
do This and THAT
BHAKTHAS
Follow ANANYA. Think of Goal of
LIBERATION
Believe in CHITTAYANTA, oneness with
God
Gravitate towards Bhagwan, even united
with God, NITHYA ABHIYUKTA –
PARAMA VIRAKTA
Lord K says, Though BHAKTAS have no
desires, He takes care of:
Their YOGAKSHEMA as WAHAMI
(servant), RAKSHAKA, BHAKTA SEVAKA,
PARIPALAKA, PARADINA – treating BHAKTA
as SWAM and HIMSELF as SWAMI
Verses 23 to 28
Lord says, The SAKAMA KARMIS –
though they may worship all the
functionaries created by HIM, only their
methods are AVIDHI, rooted on various
rituals, practices and sacrifices, will not
take them to path of liberation. They don't
follow Sruthis and Smrithis, they don't
know that I am the Antaryami, In Dweller,
the Bhoktha of their offerings, Kharm
Phala giver of their sacrifices.
They don't follow Bhagwan Smarana. So
their result also FINITE, as they follow
AVIDHI POORVIKAM and AJNANA
POORVIKAM as they have very little
SATVIKA BHAVA.
Lord K states that there is no need of
anything to worship him like Patras,
Pushpam, Phal, Holy water, etc.
Devotees need not put any efforts for
these. He does not look at DEVOTEES
per se but only their love, devotion,
BHAKTI, which are their own self effort.
Lord does not ask for any space in
our lives but space in our HEART.
9-4
Lord just wants
TAT KRUSHA MADARPANAM. Change
orientation from AHANKARA to
BHAKTHI. As long as one has offered
himself and his actions with Love and
Devotion to Lord, considering Him as
BHOKTHA and PRABHU, no Papa/
Punya, Sukha/Asukha, Bandans etc
should bother us.
Verses 29 to 34
One may think that Lord is discriminating
between Bhakthas and Abhaktas by not
being compassionate to the latter – An
absence of SAMATVAM ?
Lord hastens to add
I am SAT CHIT ANAND to every
being, equal to ALL
I am neither hateful to some and more
dear to others
But those who have offered everything
to me with love and devotion with a
SATVIKA, crystal clear ennobled mind
with all thoughts for me only, have
CAPTURED ME.
e.g., SUN is throwing SUNLIGHT on all
objects equally but a mirror captures more
than a stone. So, BHAKTHAS' devotion
captures more as compared to Abhakta’s
ignorance. Bhagwan can not remove
ignorance from Abhaktas unless they
change course. One who come near fire
get warmth under KALPAVRIKSHA Tree get
comfort.
Lord continues that even Sudurachara
of worst deeds and character, by chance
gets to know about BHAKTI and follows
with single minded devotion got Bhagwan's
grace. Such a person will get SASWATH
SHANTI as opposed to ANITHYA
SHANTI. Narada converted robber to a
Bhaktha
Lord Krishna asserts Arjuna, None of His
devotees would be allowed to suffer or
perish. He will help ADHARMATMAS to
turn DHARMATMAS. Even those who are
born as ANIMALS will get liberated if
their mind had devotion to GOD in them
from past births. Even those with
RAJASIKA Bhava, like Vysyas only
chasing profits and TAMASIKAS always
lazy will get transformed if they worship
Lord with devotion. If this is so, the
SATVIKA Bhava persons who already are
devoted to HIM, have nothing to worry.
He therefore asks Arjuna to pursue
path of liberation from this Lokha
which is ASUKHA and ANITHYA.
9-5
Lord K concludes
When mind is somewhere, thoughts are somewhere and
Head and Heart somewhere – bring them all together to
focus on Lord only with MANMANOBHAVA, MAT CHITAHA
and MAT PARAHA
Some explanations about Lords' 4 statements
1. I PERVADE ALL – VIVAHARIKA level (Transactional
Reality)
2. All Beings and Objects are in ME – Superimposed
on ME – VIVAHARIKA level
3. I AM NOT IN THEM – VIVAHARIKA level
4. THEY ARE NOT IN ME
PARAMARTIKA level
– SAT CHIT ANAND
– Absolute reality
AVATARS
In Ramayana, Lord as AVATAR did not perform
miracles. In Mahabharata, Lord performs
miracles.
AVATAR is MAYA PATHI not MAYA
DASAN
At PARAMARTIKA level Relationshipless
Relationship – like VAYU in AKASHA, SNAKE
on a ROPE is Illusion but substratum ROPE is
required for superimposition to take place
BHAGAWAN did not create universe but MAYA
did
The relationship becomes BRAHMAN and
universe is relationshipless
9-6
Introduction

support to entire universe
2) All beings on ME – superimposed on
ME
3) I am NOT in them – untouched by their
changes, unaffected
4) They are not in ME – They do not
exist, I AM THEM
Chapter 7 dealt with PARAPRAKRUTI and
APARAPRAKRUTI. E.g., SUTRA MANI GANA
Chapter 9 – higher level, Entire realm
pervaded as above, 4 steps
(B) SOPADHIKA DRISHTI
Limited, Conditioned Manifested – life in all
beings
Verses 1 and 2
Sopadhika is for DHYANAM
Contemplation through UPASANA
To gain intellectual caliber, capacity, Chitta
Suddhi, Ekangratha, Vivasayatmica
Leads to KRAMA MUKTI.
NIRUPADHIKA is for JNANA
Realisation of Lord through practice of
Shravana, Manana, Nididhyasana leads to
JIVAN MUKTI
SOPADHIKA - Saguna nature
Brahman with a form
Eswara- vast, elaborate
NIRUPADHIKA -Nirguna nature
Brahman formless
Pure consciousness, Subtle
Not easy to understand
PARAMAM VACHI – Supreme knowledge.
Requires elaboration
Lord K decides to dwell in detail as even
Devathas and Mahatmas have not been
able to understand and Arjuna wants to
KNOW ME fully
GOD is
UPADHANA KARANA – Material
cause. Clay, Gold, Wood
Nimitha KARANA – Efficient and
intelligent cause. Potter, Goldsmith,
Carpenter
Verses 3 to 5 – Lord K continues
I AM ANADI – beginning-less, ancient,
ultimate, eternal
I AM AJAM – I am unborn
I AM LOKA MAHESWARA – I am both
Upadana and Nimitya Karana of
the world. For both, individual and
universe Thought and expression
of all Beings.
One who knows ME is the
BUDDHIMAN – will get liberated
from all SINS, PAPA, PUNYA,
KARMAS, VASANAS
Lord K proceeds to elaborate on what
he controls
Chapter-10 VIBHUTI YOGA – DEVINE GLORIES (42 verses, 132 pages)10-1
I AM
Buddhi Intellect Asam Moha
SHAMA SATHYAM DHAMASAMA SUKHAM DUKHAM
BHAVA ABHAVA BHAYA
ABHAYA AHIMSA SAMATVA
TRIPTI TAPAS DHANAMYASHA AYASHA BHAVA
All above emotions are LORD only. All thoughts, expressions, virtues happen in His presence. He is the KARANA.So, SEEK GOD IN EVERY THOUGHT,EXPRESSION without worry.
Verses 6 to 10
Lord K continuesThe SAPTHA RISHIS (7), the SARATH
KUMARS (4), the MANUS (14) are born out of whom, to create all creatures in one KALPA – our present MANU is VAIVASYATHASaptha Rishis and Sarath Kumars are Progenetors of KnowledgeManus are Progenetors of Physical FacultiesThey together created both internal and external, thoughts and beings, VIBHUTI YOGA – manifold manifestations
e.g., A ray of light through a prism gives at
multiple rays
YOGA is when all the manifestations are
ONE.
ONE ALONE IS MANY
MANY TOGETHER IS ONE
ONENESS FOCUS IS YOGA
One who understands MANYNESS and
ONENESS knows ME – unshaken
AVIKAMPA YOGA – Tremor less and
unshaken
The knowledge leads to Love / Devotion /
Bhakti/ Mind resting in ME / Senses
absorbed in ME / enlightening each other
of my traits till they are satisfied /
delighted
Lord says for such persons, he HIMSELF
will bestow highest vision, bless them with
BUDDHI YOGA. They will attain AVI KAMPA
YOGA because they are steadfast,
unshaken. I will liberate them
Verses 11 to 16
YOGA is NIRGUNA BHAVA (One-ness)
VIBHUTI is SAGUNA BHAVA (Many-ness)
This knowledge is SAMYAK
DARSHANA, has AVIKAMA
YOGA, no delusion/confusion
In Jnana, one acquires, assimilates and
holds on to knowledge.
In Bhakti, Bhagwan gives knowledge
Bhakti / Janana leads to MOKSHA. God
embodies himself in the Heart / ATMA of
BHAKTA, destroys ignorance, grants
knowledge like JNANA DEEPA which is
existing already and revealed.
Like Marjara (cat) holding kittens in its
mouth,
MARKATA (monkey) holding its babies in its
chest, God will hold a true BHAKTA and lead
him to liberation / Moksha.
10-2
Arjuna, in verses 12-16, confesses that he
has understood and convinced about
LORD, his nature, Vibhutis, as it came from
Lord Himself. However, he wants to know
much more about many VIBHUTIS which
none other than Lord only can share /
reveal.
Verses 17 to 32
Arjuna, out of intellectual curiosity, wants
to know how one can connect with Lord in
meditation and in what forms and objects,
he can think of Lord. He says whatever he
has heard is like Amrutha (nectar) but
would like to know much more of Lords
VIBHUTI and Yoga power.
Lord K responds that his Vibhutis
(Glories) are limitless and would share
the ones that are prominent only.
I AM ADHI, MADHYA and ANTA of all
beings, objects, universe
I AM THE SHRISHTI KARANA (creator),
STHITHI KARANA (sustainer) and LAYA
KARANA (dissolver) of all beings,
objects, universe

Verse 1
Arjuna admits that Lord K has completely
dispelled his SHOKA and MOHA by
revealing SUPREME SECRET
– KNOWLEDGE OF SELF
(Chapters 1 to 6)
My delusion that I am the DOER and
KILLER is destroyed.
My sorrow that I would be killing my own
SWAJANA, is also destroyed as I would be
doing my duty – DHARMIC. Both,
SWADHARMA MOHA and ATMA
MOHA are removed through
KNOWLEDGE OF SELF.
Verse 2
Also, I have understood,
You are THE CREATOR, SUSTAINER and
DISSOLVER.
All that is dissolved, come back as
BEINGS (Like waves in ocean).

ANEKA ADBHUDHA DARSHANAM
(Many wonderful sights)
ANEKA DIVYA ABHARANAM (Divine
jewellery)
ANEKA DIVYA UDYATA AYUDHA
(Weapons pointing upwards)
Divine garlands, apparels and
fragrances
All wonderful, resplendent and endless
from all sides
Radiance of 1000 suns blazing the sky
Arjuna sees
Standing in one place, singularity of
TIME, SPACE, OBJECTS
Sees entire universe in infinity
Awestuck, with uncontrollable wonder
(AVESHA) Bows and prostrates with folded
hands (KRUTANJALI)
Tells Lord – I see Lord Brahma on lotus,
celestial serpent (Adisesha), Rishis in your
body, with manifold arms, stomachs, face,
eyes, ANAND RUPAM every side,
Entire cosmic form – SARVATHAHA – see
you with crowns, club, SRICHAKRA
(Discus),
A mass of radiance, unable to look at,
blazing all over, incomprehensible,
APRAMEYAM
Verses 18 to 25
Arjuna continues to describe the
VISHWARUPA visioned by him
You are
PRIMORDIAL consciousness
Akshara Purusham
Veditavyam – to be experienced by
Shravana, Manana, Nididhyasana
Aasya Visvasya Param Vidhanam –

You are Anantha Viryam
Your eyes – sastha / Surya
Your mouth – DIPTA HUTASHA
VAKTRAM – with scorching heat and
effulgence
You alone can fill space between Earth
and Heaven
You pervade all directions
Now Arjuna says
All are trembling seeing your UGRA form.
Your Devas are entering you. SURA
SANGATHA. All Rishis and Siddhas wish
all well with folded hands. All are aghast
and astonished. I am also terrified with
fear.
Perhaps conveying a message that
Cosmic form can be pleasant and
unpleasant. He is feeling terrible
seeing Lord's Rupa with flaming
mouths, fiery eyes, requests Lord to
calm down and be gracious.
11-2
Verses 26 to 34
Arjuna is terrified to see Lord's VISHWA
RUPA with wide open mouth and sharp
teeth through which All enter
Mouth with PRALAYA AGNI and
dumbfounded, ill at ease
Rushing into His mouth like rivers into
ocean. Like moths and flies rushing into
fire in full speed, knowing that they will
die, courting death
Lord shows him WHAT WILL HAPPEN in
war ahead of time
That Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, 100 sons of
Dridarashtra, warriors on Pandava, Kaurav
will meet their end.
Arjuna dares to ask Lord
Who are YOU? Why this manifestation of
ugly Ugra Rupa? Prostrates and appeals for
calm.
Lord K responds
I AM CONSCIOUSNESS with JNANA and
KALA SHAKTI and KRIYASHAKTI
Power to create, sustain and destruct. I
have come to punish all performing
ADHARMA.
I am annihilator of TIME.
I am CHAITANYA, embodying power of
destruction.
I HAVE COME FOR DHARMA
STHAPANA.
Lord K now asks Arjuna, the Ambi
Dexterous (can use both hands for bow
and arrow) to fight into war as he now
knows the result of war and attain honour
of glory.
Lord K saya Arjuna is the NIMITHA
MATRA – instrument in hands of Lord
So he should go ahead and do what he
was meant to do, emptying his EGO, that
he did it or doing it.
NIMITA MATRAM BHAVA SAVYA SACHI -

and fight without fear or anxiety.
Verses 35 to 46

Verses: 20- Lord K addresses PURUSHA
and PRAKRUTI
The field (Ksetra) and the Knower of the
field (Kestrajnam) together provide with
ONE WOMB for the UNIVERSE
PRAKRITI - Beggingless MATTER with all
23 Modifications. With GUNAS PURUSHA
beginningless SPIRIT,
ATMA, consciousness with no modification
in Gunas
PRAKRATI Is the CAUSE in the
Production of the Effects which are 13 in
numbers. 5 Great Elements, 5 sense
organs, & mind, Intellect & Ahankara the
KARANA Purusha is the cause in
Experience, of Pleasure and Pain (KARYA).
This Process is KARANA KARYA
KARTRUTVA - At the INDIVIDUAL
LEVEL
PURUSA is the Enjoyer of the SAMSARA,
seated in PRAKRUTI. experiencing the
Qualities born of PRAKRUTI.
This PURUSHA seated in the Body is also
The SPECTATOR PERMITTER SUPPORTER
besides being the ENJOYER
Those who understand the Qualities of Purusha
and Prakruti together –
This knowledge will liberate him, he will have no
rebirth.
With this LORD K completes what he answers in
verse 4
--------------------------------------------------------
Verse 25-35 Lord k explains the several paths,
Sadhana and benefits of knowledge
-------------------------------------------------------
PATHS TO SELF KNOWLEDGE
STAGE – 1 KARMA YOGA
These seekers find Study of sastras impossible
due to their VASANAS – take time to acquire
quietude and tranquility,
Stage 2 Pain of SANKYA YOGA
Seekers who don't have right and adequate
altitude of VIVEKA (Discrimination) & VAIRAGYA
(Dispassion) – MADHYAMA MARG
Stage 3 UTTAMAMARG – seekers who
meditate, behold the SELF in the SELF by the
SELF
These Yoginis by meditation behold the SELF
(Consciousness) in the SELF (BUDDHI) by
their own SELF intelligent - by there
ANTAKARANA. Eg. WAVES, RIPPLES,
FOAMS are all in OCEN of water.
These three types of seekers have different
degrees of SATVIK Bhavas
FOR those with TAMAS (Inertia) Lowest class
of ASPIRANTS – who listen to others - They
also can go beyond Death through DEVOTION
- Lord K Stresses on Efficacy of Prayers,
SRUTHI, PARAYANAM
Then LORD K states what is the Supreme Goal
to be achieved through these Paths
whatever is BORN moving or non moving is
from the union of ksetra (Field) and
ksetrajnam (Knower by the Field. (SAN YOGA)
3
Lord to continues that SELF which is a
one individual’s Purusha and Prakriti is
the same ONE SUPREME SELF present
everywhere. The seeker who sees the
SUPREME LORD existing in all Beings
That is the Imperishable residing in the
Perishable, the undying seated in the
dying is the one who sees the
SUPREME LORD.
To dispel any notion that Since
individuals are different and therefore
their SELF should also be different,
LORD K clarify that the (Purusha) is not
the one performing various action but
the Prakriti will Gunas and Modifications
is the one performing Action SELF is
Actionless, changeless and therefore is
equal in all Beings.
The One who sees that all verity of
Beings are Supported by the STRATUM,
One SINGLE SELF he alone become BRAHMAN
himself.
To dispel any thoughts That the SELF residing
in the Body must all necessarily acquire all
the vasanas of the body,
LORD K stresses that SELF is the stratum
supporting the PRAKRITI without being
touched and tainted as it has no attributes,
being the Imperishable.
To explain and illustrate the Actionlessness of
SELF and the taintlessness despite all the
activities of Prakriti around it, Lord K provides
2 Examples
The SPACE AKASHA is the subtlest of all
Gross Elements and refers to Accommodation.
Akash remains the SAME even though stone
walls may make a Prison, Iron bars
may mate a cage Akasa allows everything
to remain in it but nothing can contaminate
it.
The all Pervading Space never gets Soiled
by what it accommodates.
The SUN illuminates the whole world but its
light is not contaminated by the object on
which it Falls.
Same way PARA MATHA the Ksetrajnam,
illuminates the whole field ksetra without
being tainted by it.
THOSE who come to know of this
knowledge, the distinction between Ksetram
and Ksetrajnam will reach the SUPREME
GOAL SPACE, (Akasha) and SUNLIGHT
(PRAKASHA) have many things in Common
with ATMA.
ONLY ONE, ALL PERVADING, Action less
Don't move, remain Same (no change),
indivisible, unaffected, supports and
Accommodates and CAN NOT BE
COMPREHENDED.

Summary even though all the beings have the three Gunas, they differ because of the predominance ofone over the other two. It is also possible that the proportions may change one gaining predominanceover the other two and vice versa.Verses 19/20 Lord teaches the means of transcending the Gunas. Once the seeker realizes that thePurusha is Higher than the Gunas and only the Prakruti has the Gunas, Doership etc, he becomesGUNATHITHA beyond Gunas so, one has to discriminate and own up the Gunathitha, Purusha as ONE
SELF. Only through this knowledge of SELF, One can attain Liberation from BIRTH, DECAY,PAIN and DEATH and all-in Immortality.
CHAPTER 14 GUNA TRAYAM VIBHAGA YOGA-The Three Fold Qualities – 27 verses - 87 pages
Verse 21 Arjuna asks 3 Questions to
Lord K
1) Characteristics of a person who has
gone beyond 3 Gunas. What are the
signs (Lingas) of such a Person
2) Gunathitha Achara - Conduct of
such a Person
3) Gunathithatva Sadhanas means
to go beyond the Gunas
He remains unaffected by the opposite
experience and treats them
alike Sukha - Dukha (Pleasure & Pain) –
Alike to Priya & Apriya (Dear a not so dear)
The same in case of Ninda and Samstuthi
(unsure and Praise) – Treats alike a dod of
Earth (Loshta) a precious stone (Ashama) and
Gold (Kanchana)
-Always self Abiding (SUASTHA)
Verse 25 same in Mana Apamana (Honour
and Dishonour) same to Mitra and Avi (Friend
& foe), Sarva Arambha Parityagi (Abandoning.
Every undertaking) (Not take up or Give up
any action)
Verses 23 24 25 essentially answer Arjuna
second Question, The Gunathitha Achara
(Conduct) Gunathitha is similar to STHITHA
PRAJNA (Chapter -2) and PARABHAKTA (12th
Chapter)
Verse 26 Lord is answer Arjuna’s 3rd
Question- How does one become
Gunathitha, go beyond the Gunas.
Lord K presences BHAKTI as the
SADHANA. AVYA BICHARENA
Bhaktiyogena
- Unswerving Devotion
- To go beyond Gunas and become,
BRAHMA BHYAYA
Verse 27 In the concluding Verse, Lord K
declares He HIMSELF is the ABODE of
BRAHMAN
AMRUTASYA- The Immortal
AVYAYASYA- The Immutable
SASVASATYA- Everlasting
DHARMSYA- Dharma
Ekantikasya SUKASYA - Absolute BLISS
Thus Lord declares that ultimate Goal is
achieved through YOGA OF DEVOTION
Verse 22 A Gunathitha (Jnani) does
not hate or recognize the Gunas –
PRAKASHAM, PRAKRITHI and Mohanera
(Light, Actively and delusion) when they
are present, because he knows he is
detached from these caused by Prakruti.
Nor, he longs for them when they are
absent. Presence and absence of Gunas
do not affect a Gunathitha.
Verses 23 & 24 He is in a state of
Udasina Asena. He is seated unmoved,
unconcerned unanswered knowing how
the Gunas operate.
