PresentationThe Master in Economics and Finance (MEF) was created in 1999 with the objective of preparing top-level special-ists in two increasingly important areas: economic analysis and financial theory.

In recent years, major breakthroughs have taken place in these fields, both in terms of application of scientific knowledge to economic policy and in the way financial markets operate: the MEF provides students with a sound foundation in these subjects.

ObjectivesThe MEF aims to:

• Provide a current and solid theoretical base.

• Develop the analytical skills needed for practical work and research.

• Encourage involvement in research projects and famil-iarize the student with current fields of research.

• Make the student conversant with the use and appli-cation of theoretical concepts and the preparation and analysis of models.

• Provide the student the appropriate quantitative train-ing to carry out doctoral studies in any institution, both Spanish and foreign.

Structure

ContentMathematical analysis for economic research: The aim of this course is to fully cover the main concepts and techniques of mathematical analysis, probability and statistics that will be required for the rest of the Master’s Program.

Econometrics: Basic statistical and econometric techniques used in microeconomic data analysis; temporal series analysis.

Economic theory: Development of the main ideas and tech-niques required for general equilibrium model analysis; analysis of recent macroeconomic models with neo-classical features: analysis of models that prompted the theory of in-dustrial organization.

Finance: Introduction to modern financial theory; the concept of market risk and risk assessment models; the concept of credit risk and measurement models.

Topics in economics and finance: The program will show stu-dents different areas related to economics and finance, so they can target their academic profile to one or another field.

Research seminars: Students must attend and actively partici-pate in Research Seminars that take place every week at the School of Economics and Business Administration and whose components are members of the School and professors of im-portant national and foreign institutions.

Research project: The research project consists on the elabo-ration of an original research paper on a topic related to one of the subjects studied during the program. It should represent a significant contribution to the subject from a theoretical or empirical point of view, and be of sufficient quality to be published in a scientific journal.

MethodologyThe course consists of both lectures and practical work by the students on exercises and problems. Much of the work requires the use of computer programs in the fields of economics and finance. The students are required to prepare throughout the year brief presentations of seminal articles in the economics and finance literature.

CareersThe Master’s program is ideal for people who wish to work in fields such as:

• Financial management firms, particularly large corporations and multinationals.

• Firms working in the field of finance: securities and stock exchange companies, investment banks, trust funds.

• Research departments in public and private entities and organizations with core competencies in designing economic policies at the supranational (European Central Bank, Euro-pean Commision, etc), national, or local levels.

• Teaching and research in universities and business schools.
