Branding is more than just a logo. It is the written,spoken and visual identifiers that help form arecognizable and memorable identity. Itdetermines how people react, think and feel whenassociating with a specific entity. To this end, the City of Chandler’s brand identity iscomprised of the City’s logo, colors, typography,visuals and a lexicon. Given the importance of theCity’s image, it is essential that we safeguard itsidentity by correctly and consistently using thebrand standards set forth in the followingdocument. The proper use is necessary to assureits effectiveness.  

IntroductionThese standards establish and maintain the specificuse of the City’s identity on all print and digitalassets and communication generated by and forthe City of Chandler. These standards supersede allprevious brand standards and guidelines. The City’s brand standards are set and maintainedby the Communications and Public AffairsDepartment and have been reviewed and approvedby the City Manager. All City of Chandlerdepartments, divisions and employees have theresponsibility to apply the identity in a consistentand accurate manner so that together, we foster asense of familiarity and positively strengthen theCity’s identity. 

Any questions about these standards should bedirected to the Director of Communications andPublic Affairs. All digital files of approved art are available atchandleraz.gov/brandstandards. To maintain theintegrity of our logo it must always be reproducedfrom the approved master art and according to thespecifications in this manual. If you are unsure about the proper use of any ofthe brand elements defined in the following guide,please contact Communications and Public Affairs.

LogoChandler’s logo is a distinct representation of themunicipal government of the City and distinguishesit from other private and public entities. The intent is to project our unique identityconsistently so it becomes immediatelyrecognizable and associated with our community.To achieve maximum impact, it is imperative nomodifications be made to any of its parts and that itremains the sole identifier of the City and thedepartments and divisions that fall within it. Anyvariation or creation of sub-logos from theauthorized Chandler logo will dilute theeffectiveness of our brand identity and is strictlyprohibited.

The logo is to appear on all printed and digitalmaterials representing the City of Chandler,including stationery, business cards, fliers,brochures, banners, specialty items, City vehicles,equipment and facility signage, website, socialmedia, mobile applications, City emails,advertisements, and other external and internalcommunication materials. The Police and Fire Departments may use theselogo standards in concurrence with those for theirpublic safety emblems.

Master LogoThe master logo is the official logo for the City ofChandler. Symbolically it represents the sky over the SantanMountains which silhouettes the growing urbanarea which lies above agricultural fields. It consists of three elements: logomark, logotypeand tagline. It is the combination of these threeelements that makes up City of Chandler’s masterlogo. 

Logomark: The visual approximation of the letter“C” representing the sky over a silhouette of theSantan Mountains, which frames a cityscapesilhouette, is a nod to the City’s high-tech industrialbase standing above jagged horizontal crop linesreminiscent of the City’s agricultural heritage. Logotype: The text beside the logomark containsthe words “Chandler Arizona”. Tagline: The secondary text below the logotypewhich contains the words “Community ofInnovation”.

The master logo should be used in its entirety onofficial print and digital communications, such asstationery/letterhead, business cards, ID badges,and legal documents. where the City as a whole isthe main entity. No alterations should be made to the masterlogomark, logotype or tagline. Variations, such aschanges in the typestyle, proportions or placementof the individual elements, letter spacing of type,adding or deleting elements, adding drop shadows,redrawing or repositioning any portions of themaster logo are strictly prohibited.

Primary LogoThe primary logo is a replication of the master logowithout the tagline. It is the logo that is used mostoften, mostly due to size and space limitations. It consists of two elements: logomark and logotype.It is the combination of these two elements thatmakes up City of Chandler’s primary logo.

Logomark: The visual approximation of the letter“C” representing the sky over a silhouette of theSantan Mountains, which frames a cityscapesilhouette, is a nod to the City’s high-tech industrialbase standing above jagged horizontal crop linesreminiscent of the City’s agricultural heritage. Logotype: The text beside the logomark containsthe words “Chandler Arizona”.  

No alterations should be made to the primarylogomark or logotype. Variations, such as changesin the typestyle, proportions or placement of theindividual elements, letter spacing of type, addingor deleting elements, adding drop shadows,redrawing or repositioning any portions of theprimary logo are strictly prohibited.

One-Color LogosThere may be times when a one-color version ofthe City's logo must be used. To maintain theintegrity of the City’s logo, the entire logo must beproduced in the single color. The only approved one color uses are ChandlerBlue, Chandler Burgundy, White and Black.

Logo Type FontThe type font used to make up the City’s logo is partof the visual identity and should never be replacedwith any other type font. The approved type font used in the City’s Logotypeand tagline is Open Sans. To see the City's approved typography, see page22.

Logo SizeMinimum logo size allowedThe minimum size in which City logo may beproduced has been restricted to preserve theirintegrity. The minimum size for the master and primarylogos is 1 inch wide. 

This is measured by the full width from the left ofthe logomark to the right of the "R" in Chandler the"a" in Arizona, and should never be used anysmaller.

When the logo is being used on promotional itemssuch as pens, pencils, etc., the primary logo shouldbe used to make the best use of the logo within thedefined space.

Area of IsolationThe amount of clear space required is relative tothe actual size in which the logotype is used. Oncethe final size is determined, measure the height ofthe capital C in the word Chandler. This measurement is referred to as “X” and willbecome the standard distance from which otherelements must be measured. All elements mustremain “X” distance away from the logo, asdemonstrated.

To protect the integrity of the logo, it must alwaysappear with an area of isolation around it intowhich no other graphic or typographic elementsmay intrude.

Graphics and type should not intrude within 1X ofthis space. X = height of the capital C in the wordChandler. This clear space surrounds the entirelogo to maintain its visual integrity.

BackgroundsAs a rule, the background should be no darkerthan a 30 percent screen of black.A minimum line screen of 150 lines per inch isrecommended when printing the image inprocess color.  

Ensure there is adequate contrast for the entirelogo to stand out from the background. The mosteffective use of Chandler’s logo is when it is usedon white, pale or neutral backgrounds. 

Never place the logo on a visually distracting orheavily textured background.If a background is visually distracting andcompromises the integrity of the logo, the logoshould be placed in a solid panel with a neutralbackground.Never create an outline to place around the logo.

PartnershipsThere may be times when the City is collaboratingwith outside entities and use of the logo isrequired. When the City’s logo is used inconjunction with another entity’s logo, they shouldcarry the same weight and visual consistency.  

If all the other logos are full color, the full color Citylogo must be used. If they are one color, use anyone of the approved one color logos that providesthe greatest contrast with the background and isconsistent with the other logos.

MisuseTo maintain the integrity of Chandler’s brandidentity, our logo must always be used consistentlyand correctly according to the standards outlined inthis guide. Misuse of the logo jeopardizes the City’strademark rights on its logo. Examples on this andthe following page show common misuses of thelogo and are strictly prohibited.

Department,Division,Facility Lockups

A department, division or facility lockup consists oftwo elements and is approved in two variations: theCity of Chandler primary logo and the departmentname or the department and division names.   No City of Chandler department, division or facilityshall create or use a logo: logomark, logotype ortagline other than the approved City logo asoutlined in this guide. Doing so is strictlyprohibited. Department, division and facility lockups will beprovided by CAPA and are not to be designed bythe department. 

Department, division and facility lockups are foruse when creating collateral for a singledepartment, division or facility. 

If collaborating with one or more departments,simply use the City's primary logo and, if needed,list the departments within the asset.

No alterations should be made to the department,division or facility lockup. Variations, such aschanges in the typestyle, proportions or placementof the individual elements, letter spacing of type,adding or deleting elements, adding drop shadows,redrawing or repositioning any portions of thelockup are strictly prohibited.          16

Color PaletteColor is another element that makes up the City ofChandler’s brand identity and plays an essentialrole as a visual identifier. Consistent use of theCity’s color palette visually assists print and digitalassets as being associated with the City and it isimperative the City’s visual identity is maintainedand reinforced in such a manner.

If using a block of color, the foundation of theprint or digital asset must be created using atleast one of the two primary colors.An additional color from the primary orsecondary color palette may be used as anaccent.Only one secondary color may be used on asingle asset.Secondary colors are to be used sparingly. Theyshould not exceed more than 10 percent of thecolor application on any given print or digitalasset. Black is used for all body copy on print assets andChandler Grey Dark on all digital assets.

AaTypography

Typography is another element that makes up theCity of Chandler’s brand identity and plays anessential role as a visual identifier. Consistent useof the City’s approved typography visually assistsprint and digital assets as being associated with theCity and it is imperative the City’s visual identity ismaintained and reinforced in such a manner. Typography tells a story; it affects how users readand understand print and digital assets. How fontsare combined and treated (point size, kerning,leading, tracking, color, etc.) helps draw the user’sattention to the most important information firstand provides a visual hierarchy and structure forsupplement information and the desiredoutcome/call-to-action.

Open Sans is the approved type font for print anddigital assets. There are nine styles within the OpenSans font family:

Formatting and StyleHeading/Title: Title casingCapitalize the first letter of each word except forarticles (and, an, the), prepositions (in, to, on, with,etc.) and conjunctions (but, for, if, or, when, etc.)unless they are the first word in the heading, inwhich case it should be capitalized. No punctuation. Use only one main heading/title per asset. Sub-headings: Sentence casingCapitalize the first letter of the heading. Nopunctuation. At least two point sizes smaller than mainheading/title. 

Body text: Regular sentence casingFollow AP Style. Standard is at least two point sizes smaller thansub-headings, and never smaller than 8 point font. Call to actions: Title casingCapitalize the first letter of each word except forarticles (an, an, the), prepositions (in, to, on, with,etc.) and conjunctions (but, for, if, or, when, etc.)unless they are the first word in the heading then itshould be capitalized. No punctuation. Always two points larger than body text, neverlarger than a heading.

Fine PrintFollow AP Style.  Standard is at least two point sizes smaller thanbody text, and never smaller than 5 point font. 

ALL CAPS should be used sparingly and are toonly be used as headings or sub-headings. ALLCAPS signify the intention to yell.  Never use exclamation marks, unless you intendto imply that you are yelling. Quotes are always in Italics.  Avoid outdated treatments: drop shadows,outlines, 3-D, soft edges, reflections, etc. 23

Visual ElementsVisual elements are the photographs, shapes andicons that make up the most visual portion of theCity of Chandler’s brand identity and play anessential role as a visual identifier. Consistent use of the City’s approved visualelements visually assists print and digital assets asbeing associated with the City, and it is imperativethe City’s visual identity is maintained andreinforced in such a manner.

This is where the story of Chandler unfolds. Theyare a powerful element that helps form arecognizable and memorable identity anddetermines how people react, think and feel whenassociating with the City of Chandler.

PhotographyLifestyle photosLifestyle photos are defined as images thathighlight the people that have made Chandler apremier City to live, work and play. They tell thestory of Chandler through the emotion tied to themessage and are as natural and candid as possible.All photos should:

Contain at least one person – with thatperson/people as the main subject.Focus on the appropriate emotion for themessage.Be candid and natural.Be friendly, welcoming and community-oriented. Represent the diverse population.Be vibrant, modern, appealing.

Beauty shotsBeauty shots are defined as the images, with orwithout people, which highlight the landmarks,buildings and facilities, landscapes, destinations,neighborhoods, employment corridors, naturalscenery, parks, etc. of the built and naturalenvironment.

The heart of the City's brand is photography. All ofthe City’s photography will feature the people,places and programs that have made Chandler theCommunity of Innovation, a sought-after place tostart and raise a family, relocate or start a business,and a premier vacation destination.

ShapesTo keep a uniform look and feel across print anddigital assets, the rectangle, in its various sizes hasbeen adopted as the official City shape. 

The City of Chandler has one secondary shape: acircle. 

A secondary circle is to be used sparingly.

There should be no more than three secondarycircles on a single asset or on a single page withinan asset.

IconographyIcons are another element that make up the City ofChandler’s brand identity and play an essential roleas a visual identifier.
