Pain is Inevitable, But Suffering is Just Plain Recourse (Stupid)

In the everyday craziness of my life, I left the house one day to run an errand and didn’t realize that I had left my wallet on the dining table at home. I went about here and there doing what I needed to do, taking care of the business I had to take care of. Slowly, one by one, my mental checklist was be-

ing checked off. The last order of business before I went home was to go grocery shopping. I grabbed my shopping cart and went in. I grabbed what I needed to get and proceed-ed to the checkout line. Before loading my items onto the conveyer belt, I reached into my pocket and suddenly realized I didn’t have my wallet! I was in sheer panic

mode! I quickly returned everything and went to the car to see if I left it on the seat. Realizing it wasn’t there, I re-traced my steps calling places that I have been previously on that day to see if I had left it there. In sheer terror of now having to cancel credit cards, losing cash and hopes that no one had already used my cards, I called my wife to tell her what happened.

“Did you leave it at home?” was her first words. I told her I’d go look and hung up the phone. I rushed home, and there it was, as if a spotlight was shining down on it. I felt stupid, embarrassed, and relieved all at the same time. For us as Bonbu, unenlightened persons, we know situations like this all too well. One of the parables the Buddha is said to have taught is the parable of the “Second Arrow.” It goes something like this. Say you are walking down the road minding your own business and suddenly, an arrow comes flying through the air and hits you right in the thigh. The first thing that would come to

your mind is “Who shot this at me?” The response is never, “Hey, I should pick up a bow and arrow and shoot my other thigh!” What the Buddha is trying to say is, why would anyone want more pain and suffering, especially when the first arrow was enough. Many times, we are the one constantly shooting ourselves day after day. For me, the first arrow was unintentionally, being dumb enough, or unknowingly walking out of the house without my wallet. The second ar-row, the sheer panic I was in and the moments that lead up until my discovery. I was suffering enough when I realized what I did, but I went ahead and shot myself again, when I had no con-trol of the situation and went into panic mode, not to mention, the shame and guilt. The second arrow was really un-necessary. Many times, we feel the need to rid ourselves quickly the reaction to certain situations that we may go through in life. We may beat ourselves up or others, we may get upset, so start to blame others, however what it comes down to is simply this, it’s just plain recourse of us CHOOSING to shoot ourselves when we are down, when we don’t have to.

When we shoot ourselves the second, third, fourth time, we are choosing to avert the situ-ation and add in more things than necessary to add to the situation espe-cially if it detracts the very characteristics that we portray to others and the very definition to how we define ourselves. The Buddha tells us that we cannot control that first arrow, but the sec-ond one is a recourse in how we react to the first arrow. This recourse is purely optional, and we are the keepers to how we react. We should reflect and ask ourselves if we are shooting ourselves a second time because we are obsessed to find an answer that suits our needs, even though it’s far from the truth. Are our afflictions consuming our lives with constant thinking, judging, or obsessing unnecessary things?

We may be unenlightened people, but that should not be our excuse, we have the option to be in control of our actions. In the end, as one person put it, “The Teachings (of the Buddha) is often summarized as ‘Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional.’”

Rev. David Fujimoto

President’s Corner Here we are in the last quarter of the year. Many of the sangha members

enjoyed a memorable trip to the World BWA Convention and extended their trip

with tours. I enjoyed a parliamentarian convention in Las Vegas and was so fortu-

nate to have my daughter join me for the San Francisco and Las Vegas trips. We had

a great time and learned many new things. Dean, Doreen, Rene, Brandon and I also

attended the 56th State Lay Convention hosted by the Hawaii Island Lay Association

and were inspired by the new ideas, activities and great hospitality. Had many op-

portunities to network at all of these sangha activities.

Coming up on October 18-19 are webinars originating in Honolulu with Milila-

ni Hongwanji as a host site. This program is for ordinary folks like us to face the seri-

ous problem of rising suicide and suicidal thoughts in our local communities. Check

out the details on the flyer and spread the word to your friends and family as this pro-

gram is open to the public.

Save the afternoon of Saturday, November 16 for an EcoSangha Workshop from 1

to 3 p.m. presented by Karen Akahoshi of San Jose Betsuin. Karen presented a workshop

at the World BWA conference in San Francisco with the founder of the EcoSangha Move-

ment at the Buddhist Churches of America. All Sangha members and friends are encour-

aged to come out for this workshop as we face the reality of climate change as Buddhists

and world citizens.

As we go to press, we are all observing Peace Day at the Bishop’s Lounge at the

VegFest and the Feast for Peace at Mililani Hongwanji. Coming up soon are our joyful Kei-

rokai featuring the class of 2019, those born in 1939. Invitations to join the dharma school

students are going out to the class of 2019 but our records are incomplete. If you were

born in 1939 and do not get contacted soon re this special activity, contact June Asato or Rev. Fujimoto for

more information.

June & Susan with Rev. Yukiko Motoyoshi, former resident minister at

Mililani Hongwanji.

Please kokua for our annual Foodland fundraiser thanks to the legacy of founder Maurice Sully Sullivan for giving back to the community. For the month of September, Foodland Maikai members are invited to make donations up to $249 to Mililani Hongwanji and Foodland will match a portion of it. Simply, at any Foodland checkout, tell the cashier that you wish to make a Give Aloha donation to Mililani Hongwanji, Code is 77543. Thank you for your generosity and spirit of aloha!

BWA 40th Anniversary Luncheon

Wow! What a memorable time we had in San Francisco at the 16th World Buddhist Women's Convention over the Labor Day weekend. It was inspirational, entertaining, educational, and just plain fun to be amongst women, men, and ministers from the Mainland, Canada, South America, and Japan. Because some of our members were affiliated with other BWA units before Mililani, it was especially gratifying to see friends from Denver, New York, San Jose, and other locations.

After a long 5-hour flight, we arrived at the hotel quite late, at 10:30 pm, so you can imagine our delight when we were greeted at the hotel lobby by the friendly face of Ann Ishikawa, who had arrived there earlier in the day. She said she was there to welcome us to San Francisco! Thanks, Ann!

During the opening service the next morning, there was an address by His Eminence Kojun Ohtani, Monshu, and a welcome by Rev. Kodo Umezu, Bishop of the Buddhist Churches of America. The keynote speakers, who kept to the theme of "Living the Nembutsu", were Keiko Toro, an independent Buddhist scholar, and Rev. Yukiko Motoyoshi, resident minister of the Buddhist Church of Stockton, CA. Many know Rev. Motoyoshi, as she served as Mililani's min-ister from 1985 - 1990.

Later that day, we attended workshops, seminars, or shopped at the WBWC Marketplace for unique gifts and omiyage, many made by the Bay Area BWA units. The main event was on Saturday night, when, after greetings and a satisfying dinner, we were entertained by the District units. The Pacific Northwest District gave a moving rendition of "Getting to Know You", along with spectacu-lar images of the Pacific Northwest that were flashed on the screen. It was followed by the Hawaii District. About 50 members sang a BJ Soriano composition, followed by 27 cos-tumed dancers who did a hula to "The Gold-en Chain". If interested, you can google fa-cebook and Hawaii Buddhist Women's Asso-ciation to view the hula. We owe a deep sense of gratitude to Kevin Yoza, son of Pres-ident Diane, who served as photographer of the event, and who sent videos and photos online to the Mililani BWA members.

During the banquet, we were seated at tables of 10 with members from other locales, so those who had trans-lation apps were seen in cross-language conversations. Those apps really work!

On Sunday morning, after formal events, we were treated to some Buddhist insights by five outstanding Bud-dhist leaders representing the five regions of South America, Japan, Canada, Hawaii, and the US. After the closing ser-vice late Sunday morning, everyone was invited to attend the "American Bon Dancing" event, held across the street from the hotel -- a festive end to a great weekend!

A heads-up for everyone -- the next World BWA Convention will be held on May 10-11, 2023, in Kyoto. Other Mililani BWA activities for the fall include CARE Day on Oct. 4, spearheaded by Carrie Kawamoto, and Ehime Maru Cleanup on Nov. 2, chaired by Debbie Hiyakumoto. The bi-monthly visit to the Wahiawa Rehab Center is scheduled for Nov. 5. Finally, on Saturday, Nov. 9, the annual Oahu United BWA Convention/Seminar is being held at Waipahu Hongwanji. More information and sig-nups at the Oct. 13 meeting.

We kicked off our first day of this school year’s Dharma School on September 1st with our annual Rally Day, filled with fun games, prizes, snacks, and goodie bags! Thank you to Xander Babcock for being our first emcee of the school year representing the Dharma School/Jr. YBA. He did an awesome job as always!

This new school year also brings a new Dharma School Director! We are so excited to welcome David Thomson to this position. David and his wife Madonna have four children, three of whom are current Dharma School students. We sincerely ap-preciate David taking the lead and he will be supported by the other Dharma School teachers. In celebration of Peace Day on September 21st, the students made their own peace flags on Sep-

tember 15th, which were then hung in the temple on September 22nd. Then after the Ohigan family ser-

vice, the students learned and shared more about Peace Day with a book reading focusing on peace.

Here’s what we have planned for our Dharma School lessons/activities for October:

• October 6th Interview Keirosha honorees for the November 3rd Keirokai recognition service/program

• October 20th Field trip to Foster Botanical Gardens

• October 27th Meditation teaching and practice

On October 6th we will be interviewing this year’s Keirosha honorees, the Sangha members who are celebrating their 80th

birthdays this year. This is always a nice activity where the students can learn more about our special temple members and espe-

cially what it was like when they were growing up.

Then on Sunday, October 20th, we will be taking a special trip to Foster Botanical Gardens. Families should plan to meet

at the gardens at 9am. We’ll take a tour of the gardens and view their Bodhi tree, the same type of tree that Siddhartha Gauta-

ma meditated under and achieved Enlightenment and became the Buddha. Sangha member Winnie Singeo, who retired from

Foster Gardens, will be our tour guide. We will provide snacks and drinks for everyone.

To end our busy month, on October 27th Aunty Jill will lead the students in “chocolate” meditation and also read the

book, “Peaceful Piggy Meditation”. Don’t miss this calm but yummy lesson!

Please feel free to see Dharma School Director David Thomson or teachers Roger Babcock, Claire Doi, Jill Kyhos, Susan

Oshiro, or Gay Tanaka if you have any questions or need more info about our activities.

Growing Green

It’s been in the works for a while now but the temple’s hydroponics garden is finally in place! The garden, which was Chloé Oshiro’s Girl Gold Award project, was first proposed a few years ago. Chloe’s proposal was reviewed, revised, and approved by the Girl Scout Council and a few days before leaving for college, Chloé put the finishing touches on her project. Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil by instead using mineral nutrient solu-tions in a water solvent. The temple’s small garden is currently growing butter lettuce, which hopefully will be ready to harvest in a few months. It is the plan to use the lettuce to make salads for Sunday service refreshments or other temple events. Chloe’s inspiration was the Green Hongwanji initiative that came out a few years ago. The “green” goals were to make temples more environmentally responsible as an expression of our Buddhist values. Hopefully our little garden can get bigger and provide even more greens for the temple in the future.

Chloe wishes to thank Rev. David Fujimoto for his help and guidance with her project. And thanks also to the Sangha for

their support and assistance in sustaining the garden.

Memorial Services Mililani Hongwanji conducts memorial services in hon-or of those who have passed away. The Shotsuki Memorial Ser-vice is a general memorial service which are held monthly to remember members and friends who passed away during the month in which the memorial service is held. These services are held primarily for those individuals that do not fall in the yearly service interval cycle. Nenki Hoyo Memorial Services are memorial services which are held separate from the monthly memorial services in yearly intervals. These separate private services can be held before, on or after the memorial dates. It is a personal oppor-tunity to gather as a family to encounter and listen to the Bud-dha Dharma and remember your family members and friends who have passed on and through these services, we are able to

reflect on all that we have received from them in our daily lives. It also

gives families the opportunity to reconnect with members they otherwise would not see during the course of the year.

Minister’s Private Visitation Are you unable to come to the temple? Please call Rev. David Fujimoto at 808.625.0925 to request a private visit. The minister would love to reach out to you and be the bridge between you, the temple and the sangha!
