Module 8 Master Doing Business in America:Free Trade Agreements

In America there are several trade agreements (Free Trade Agreements -FTA-, Economic Partnership ...), both regional andextra-regional:

Intra-regional : NAFTA, Mercosur, CAN, ALADI,MCCA ...

Extra-regional : TPP, APEC, Agreements with theEuropean Union ...

Bilateral : FTA's of U.S. with Chile, Colombia,Morocco, Australia ...FTA's of Mexico with Chile,Uruguay...

Furthermore, each American country can have free tradeagreements with third countries. For example, Chile has FTAswith Panama, China, USA, Canada, Mexico, South Korea,Central America, EFTA, Australia, Peru, Turkey and is memberof the Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement(TPP) and APEC.

A company wishing to do business in America should to knowall these agreements in force for all target markets inthe region.

If the country of the exporter (or importer):

a) Has FTAs in force with some American country :The exporter should take advantages of the agreement (tariffreductions, rules of origin, technical standards, investment, intellectual property, public procurement, trade in services ...).

But also need to know if other countries may have agreements inforce with one of these countries.

b) Has no agreement in force with any Americacountry: One possible scenario is that another country (or region) canhave some agreement in force with American countries. Then, the exporter has a disadvantage.

Page 28: Master Business America

8/15/2019 Master Business America

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/master-business-america 28/32

All these factors are essential to design and adapt theinternational marketing strategy for each target market in America.

For example, an Argentinean company wishing to export toUnited States would be at a disadvantage with a Chileancompany, as Chile has a Free Trade Agreement in force withUnited States, and the Argentinean company has all theadvantages inherent to the FTA. The Argentinean companyshould consider this factor in its export strategy to the region.
