Where's the innovation? In this issue we carry our first preview of

the massive Bauma exhibition and review

Februarys ARA show. Looking at what the

aerial lift manufacturers had on display in

Atlanta and what manufacturers are telling

us they will launch at Bauma, one wonders what happened to real innovation?

Most equipment manufacturers agree that new products are the life blood of a

growing business, the same applies to the health of an industry. It looks as

though the major aerial lift producers are running out of steam when it comes to

new ideas or are they simply resting on their laurels in a fat and happy market?

Don't get me wrong, this 'impression' does not come from any in-depth analysis,

more a gut feeling after discussing Bauma plans with most manufacturers in

January and then walking around what used to be the hottest new product show

in the aerial lift business in February. A slower pace of development might of

course be related to the fact that the powered access market is reaching a level

of maturity, where it is harder to make a true breakthrough?

In terms of innovation the crane industry is currently setting a shining example,

there is no argument about its maturity, some claim that it is even approaching

its dotage. Yet some 10 to 15 years ago the industry was in the doldrums, new

models on offer were hardly any different to 10 year old products in its

customers fleets… leaving no pressure to trade up…so many simply refurbished.

Then the industry came alive and over the past six to 10 years has been a

hotbed of new product development. Modern cranes have longer booms, faster

set up times, easier transportation and new concepts, or at least new angles on

earlier concepts have sprung up.

A few years back the aerial lift industry needed to take a breath, it needed to

slow down a bit and improve the quality and reliability of its products while

reducing manufacturing costs. That task has all but been completed now and

what the industry needs, using jargon, is to be 'stretching the envelope', moving

things along, even 'thinking out of the box'.

New products that bring true user benefits forces or encourages rental

companies to turn their fleets over faster. It differentiates the better companies

from the 'rent-a-wreck' suppliers and enhances rental rates. Perhaps as

importantly it produces a steady stream of good used machines for developing

markets where powered access is in its infancy and where the cost of labour

will not justify new.

The industry would do well to step up development while it can afford to

make the odd mistake or two or it might face the double whammy of a lack

of interest in a falling market.

Limerick-based Skylift has ordered more than €15 million of aeriallifts from Genie industries. The deal covering a wide range of productsis targeted purely at servicing the domestic Irish market. The companysays it is the first of a number of planned major investments in newequipment over the next 18 months cementing its position as the lead-ing access equipment supplier in Ireland.

Skylift was founded in Limerick almost 10 years ago by managing directorJohn Cusak and now has locations in Limerick, Cork and Dublin.

Ainscough Crane Hire has once again hit the acquisition trail purchasing Nationwide Crane Hire - which trades as Crane Services of Leeds - for an undisclosed sum.Crane Services has a fleet of 36 cranes including some of the largest mobilesin the UK. Its three Liebherr 500 tonners and Liebherr 1000 tonner on order, provided users with a big telescopic crane alternative to Ainscough. The moveeffectively gives Ainscough a stranglehold in this sector of the market.Chairman Martin Ainscough said: “We are delighted to have concluded thispurchase and our intention is to run Crane Services as a separate businessin the immediate future to ensure the minimum disruption to its customers.“ David Slack owner and MD of Crane Services will remain with the business forfour months as a consultant to ensure a smooth handover of the business. Slack said ““it was important for me to ensure a secure future for the staff andemployees, many of whom have worked with me for many years, some sinceschool. They have built up this business side by side with me and frequently goneabove and beyond the call of duty to get the job done I am sure that they will continue to prosper under the Ainscough banner.”David Slack and his family took full control of the company just over a year agowhen it purchased the remaining 50 percent of Nationwide Crane Hire from business partner Bob Dickey.

Venpa 3 - the Italian rental company- has bought Locatelli, the Bergamobased crane manufacturer. Locatellispecialises in rough terrain andsmall city cranes in the rangingfrom 12.5 to 60 tonnes capacity.

Venpa was originally an offshoot ofGenie distributor CTE and still has a

level of common ownership withthe CTE group. It operates from 36 locations in Italy and EasternEurope with 3,500 machinesincluding aerial lifts, mobile cranes and general constructionequipment. No financial details ofthe deal have been released.

On February 6th a Moog MB250 underbridge inspection platform onhire from ES Access was hit by the mainline Paddock Wood toGillingham train traveling at around 60 mph. Amazingly no-one wasinjured in the accident although the platform suffered major damage.Investigations are continuing, but reports suggest that the platformwas incorrectly instructed to set up on a bridge over the mainline railway, rather than on a river bridge about 150 metres further downthe M20 motorway.

The train hit the centre part of the platform's deck scattering parts for quite adistance along the track. The windscreen of the train - the point of impact -

was also shattered. Fortunately neither the operator from ES or thecontractor's staff were in the platform when the train struck.

Keith Hunwick, proprietor of ESAccess told C&A that the platformoperator was one of his mostexperienced, with full certificationand factory training on the Moog

platforms. In accordance with normal British Transport Police procedures, the operator was immediately arrested, but later released on bail.

Senior managers of the UK'sConstruction Plant-hireAssociation (CPA) met withStephen Williams, HSE's chiefInspector of construction, inFebruary, following the incidentsin London and Liverpool. On the agenda was legislation, standards and industry goodpractice. Various items wereidentified for further development, including best practice guidanceon maintenance and thoroughexamination of tower cranes.

Canadian based mast climbingmanufacturer Fraco has opened itsown, majority owned distributionand rental company in Hampton,Middlesex. Fraco (UK) Ltd will beheaded by managing director KenBeesley, who also owns a minorityshareholding in the new business. The first units- all single mast 1.8 tonne capacity ACT 4s - haverecently been delivered to a site inBristol which is looking to take 22units in total. A further 16 unitshave been quoted for sale to aLondon contractor.

Arcomet-AirtekArcomet of Belgium has acquiredthe 50 percent holding in AirtekCranes UK that it did not alreadyown, from Airtek Safety and has appointed Steve Rooney asmanaging director of the newArcomet-Airtek Cranes.

The CPA says that this guidancewill be drafted 'to produce robustpractical information which willcontribute significantly to raisingstandards in the industry, buildingon the work already carried out bythe CPA's Tower Crane Interest Group'.

“The HSE is pleased to see theindustry taking ownership of theneed to improve health and safety. We had a very constructive meeting with the CPA and welcometheir very positive approach,” said Williams.

Hi-Lift's newly formed division Eco-Lift has purchased 10 Maedamini crawler cranes - a mixture ofMC104, MC285, MC305, MC405 and LC785 models.

This is a new venture for Hi-Lift. Its sistercompany Hi-Reach powered access has seven depots across the UK and a significant customer base and the company clearly sees potential inadding mini crawler cranes to its range.

“We hit the ground running on March1st with a team of fully trained staff, capable of providing effective technicaladvice for our customers,” said Hi-Lift'smanaging director Paul Richards.

10 year checkThe UK's Transport and General WorkersUnion is calling for an annual check onall cranes over 10 years old. It is alsourging the HSE to blitz sites to ensurecompliance with tower crane regulations.

Health and safety officials from theTGWU have distributed posters to sitesacross the country to gain support.Forty-one MPs have apparently signedan early day motion backing the campaign. Bob Blackman, T&G national officer, said: “I understand that contractors are starting to take ownership for crane safety. They'rechecking cranes as they come to site, rather than relying on hirers.”

A cracking liftManitowoc 21000 crawler crane has lifted an 812 tonne hydrogenationcracking unit during reconstruction of the Beijing Yansan PetrochemicalComplex in China. The crane, owned by oil company Sinopec, easily positioned the 32 metre high unit - the largest lift in the project.

Sinopec used Manitowoc's Max-Er superlift attachment, boosting the crane'smaximum capacity to 907 tonnes. The crane was rigged with a 54 metre mainboom for the lift which took less than 30 minutes from picking the vessel to final positioning. Ma Zengtao, Sinopec's crane manager.

Terex Aerial Work Platforms - largely tradingunder the Genie brand - saw 2006 revenues

rise by 41 percent to $2.09 billion despite slowing domestic demand for telehandlersand trailer mounted lifts in the fourth quarter. Gross margins jumped from 19.8 percent to 25 percent while income from operations almost doubled to $525 million or 17.8 percent of sales, up from 12.9 percent for 2005.

Terex Cranes upTerex cranes saw revenues rise to $1.74 billion last year up 37 percent on 2005.

Gross margins rose substantially from 13.4 percent of sales to 16.8 percent or$293 million. The net effect was a rise in operating income of 256 percent to$155 million or 8.9 percent of sales compared to 4.7 percent in 2005.

The crane group's order book more than doubled to $1.13 billion or almost eight months.

The Terex Corporation as a whole posted revenues up almost 25 percent to $7.65billion with net after tax income more than double that of 2005 at $400 million. The group's backlog grew by almost a $1 billion to $2.49 billion.

The large self erecting tower crane caused extensive structural damage.

Another big GerkenDüsseldorf-based Gerken has taken delivery of a Bronto GL101 truck mounted lift, the highest work platform in the world. The Bronto joinsGerken's 100 metre Ruthmann unit. The new lift went directly to work, inspecting an external stainless steel stack at a newspaper printing plant, for damage following almost hurricane level winds. With its lighter weightand more compact dimensions the company was able to manoeuvre theBronto much closer to the building than would have been possibly with the Ruthmann which has been in the fleet for three years. “These characteristics make the GL 101 suitable for new fields of use which untilnow were not possible for 100 metre platforms,” said Ludger Pottbecker, head of the vehicle mounted lift division at Gerken.

Finnish trailer-mounted platform specialist Dinolift is expanding.Production this year is set to double to more than 1,000 units, The company delivered its 5,000 lift in August 2006 and will shortly deliver its 6,000th..

To cope with this increase, a new 3,500 sq metre extension to its mainfacility in south east Finland is being built resulting in a total of 18,000 sqmetres of production space. To further expand, the company is looking tonew export markets including North and South America - in co-operationwith Haulotte - and to Eastern Europe, particularly the growing Russianmarket. Total revenues in 2006 exceeded €20 million.

Liebherr confirms UK rentalLiebherr has confirmed that it will open its previously announced UK rental business within the next six months. A separate company,Liebherr Rental Ltd will be based at the company's UK headquarters in Biggleswade but equipment will also be based in Bathgate, Scotland and Wigan, Lancashire.

The additionof the BrontoGL 101 meansthat Gerkennow has 11truck mountedplatforms over70 metres.

Liebherr has been crystal clearabout its intentions and stressedthat it will only offer products forrent that it does not sell to rentalcustomers. These will include specialist earthmoving, quarryingand demolition equipment. Thecompany has stated categoricallythat it will not be entering thecrane hire market and is also notlikely to add telehandlers to its fleet.

Liebherr is currently recruiting amanaging director for its rental operation and has placed orders for55 machines with a total value ofaround £7 million.

Liebherr's Mietpartner rental opera-tion in Germany along with similar operations in France, Italy and Spaingenerated revenues of €143 millionin 2005 from 124 locations.

Wolffkran expanding all overGo-ahead tower crane producer Wolffkran has opened a production facility in Lübben, maintaining its 'made in Germany' if not 'made in Heilbronn' status. Around 80 staff are nowemployed at the new facility producing around 1500 generictower crane elements per year. According to managing directorDr Peter Schiefer, even multiple shifts and 50 additional staff at its Heilbronn facility have failed to meet increased demand.

The company has also entered into two sales and marketing agree-ments. Abu Dhabi-based Kanoo Machinery will concentrate on thehire and sale of cranes in the United Arab Emirates and its agree-ment with Streif Baulogistik will lead to a Wolffkran hire fleet in theUkraine. “As with our partner HTC in England, we are opening upnew markets not by establishing a branch of our own, but by col-laboration with a local service provider”, says Schiefer.

Unic Cranes Europe is set tounveil what it claims is theworld's biggest mini craneat Bauma. With six tonnescapacity at three metres and a hook height of 19.5metres, the URW-706 is now the largest crane in the Unic range.

Despite its size the unit is still able to pass through astandard double doorway.

The 706 also features a threemetre long, self-stowing flyjib, another first for a minicrane, together with anoptional searcher hook.

Tony Rumsby the, proprietor of Wonalift-Hevingham,Norwich, died suddenly on Jan 24th aged 67. He leftthree specific requests for his funeral:

1.His beloved Coles 825 truck crane was to transporthim to the funeral;

2. He was to be buried wearing his hard hat, coveralls, boots and Hi Viz jacket and finally

3. His wife Lorraine, was to say a few words athis funeral.

All three wishes were granted to prepare him for the next life and those in attendance heard Lorrainegive a tribute that left many hardened construction professionals with tears in their eyes.

To say Tony led a colourful life would be an understatement. There are many stories, including onewhere on a site in Gt. Yarmouth, the agent explainedhe had a yellow and red card notice. One yellow cardmeaning you are being watched, two yellows lead tothe red card, which means a sending off. Rumsbyturned to the site agent and said, "I drive a crane, I do not play football, so stick that Red Card up your a**e," and drove off the site to another job. The industry has lost a true character and is the poorer for it.

New crane andaccess eventA new cranes and access event - Vertikal Days - is set totake place on September 19th and 20th at Haydock Parkracecourse. Organised by The Vertikal Press, publishers ofCranes & Access, the event is aimed at bringing together UK industry professionals for a two day 'get together'.Rental companies, fleet owners and lifting professionals will have a chance to view the latest products, meet with a wide number of suppliers and discuss their purchasing or technical requirements for the year ahead.

Based on the successful formula of Platformer Days in Germany, there are no parking charges and hospitality is included.Qualified visitors can pre-register, be invited by an exhibitor or purchase an all inclusive pass.

There will be no earthmoving or other unrelated equipment, no large distances to walk, and apart from a short wait at thebuffet or the bar, no queuing!

For exhibitors, there is a fixed price entry which is all inclusive. The organizers say that no special ground preparation, privatecatering, stand structures or graphics are allowed. The only add-on is a basic gazebo/cover to keep out any rain.

If the event takes off it could become a regular event, either atthe same location or rotating between southern and northernvenues. Leigh Sparrow, of Vertikal said: “The plan is for this to become a UK industry event with the participants deciding its development in terms of location and frequency.”

The cannier scaffold contractorslike Brogan Scaffold, BFT andSGB have seen the writing on thewall and are moving into mastclimbing work platforms in a bigway. It now seems that the mastclimber rental or rather 'contracting'business - after having startedout disastrously with poweredaccess rental companies - iscoming to rest in the façade orcontract scaffolding rental sector, after having moved there via afew specialist companies.

This evolution certainly makessense. Good contract scaffoldershave the engineering and planningskills, the erection teams and mostimportantly the mind-set for thisbusiness. Not to mention of course, the customer base to really developthe concept. The biggest obstaclethey face is to overcome the notionthat they are a scaffold companyand realise that they need to think of themselves as a façadeaccess specialist.

It can be argued that the mastclimbing work platform businesstakes traditional scaffolders into thepowered access business, but a formof powered access that they canunderstand and excel with. Thisdoes not mean that large scaffoldcompanies will take over the mastclimber market completely. Far fromit. There will always be room forthe devoted specialist and many ofthe big scaffolding companies thatare moving into mast climbers arewisely creating - or as in the caseof SGB, buying - specialist divisionsto handle their mast climbers.

More producers…More product diversity

At the same time mast climbermanufacturers are offering anincreasingly diverse range of products. This ranges from small trailermounted mast climbers for low

level and light duty work such aspainting, caulking etc… through tomid range products, still the mostpopular in Europe, to heavy duty -high capacity mast climbers thatcan not only carry large loads, butalso handle substantial cantileverplatforms, long decks and multiplelevels. In recent years NorthAmerica has favoured the bigheavy duty mast climbers, mostoften powered by an engine andhydraulics, while Europe hasfavoured lighter duty models withelectric power and drive.

Canadian manufacturers havebecome the champions of the ultraheavy duty mast climber marketand devoted a good deal of effortinto promoting factory designedsolutions for highly specialised configurations. The two principlemanufacturers are Hydro Mobileand Fraco. Both of which have nowstarted to sell in Europe with Fracomaking the running. It also has a significant and growing presence in a number of countries on the

continent. The company's firstentrance into the UK and Ireland -through Universal Sky Platforms in London - started well and thenfoundered. Since then it hasbranched out and been far moresuccessful selling to companiessuch as Brogan Scaffold.

In order to service these companiesit has recently established a majorityowned UK affiliate in Middlesex-Fraco (UK), headed by managingdirector Ken Beesley, who also ownsa minority shareholding in the newbusiness. In addition to servicingits UK and Ireland customers, Fraco(UK) is planning to establish itsown rental business as the marketdevelops. Scanclimber, Finnish basedbut manufacturing in Poland, isanother company that has done wellat the heavier end of the marketwith its special heavy duty mastthat is common across most of itsrange. Unusually the Scanclimbermast incorporates a ladder on oneside which also acts as additional structural support.

There is a quiet revolution going on in the mast climber market with usage in many western countries beginning toescalate significantly. Contractors now appear to be getting themessage that they are a cost effective and efficient alternativeto façade scaffold, not to mention a safer or at least a more predictable access method.

A wide range of cantilevers and wrap-aroundscan be incorporated.

Mastclimbers do not have the aesthetic or security problems of façade scaffold.

Two cooling towers at the Neurathpower plant in Germany neededa suitable hoist to transport passengers and materials fromground level to the landing location during the slipform construction. However, with alower diameter of 108 metres anda 39 metre difference betweenthe bottom and top diameters, thechosen hoist had to cope withthe substantial concave profile of the cooling tower.

Since the sliding formwork used forthe concrete pour changed heightcontinuously, a key requirementwas that the hoist could adapt tothe constantly changing structure.

Oy Scaninter Nokia eventuallysolved the problem together withGerman contractor Wiemer &Trachte adapting the two tonnecapacity Scanclimber SC2032Fwith 3.2 metre by 1.5 metre cage.

In order to adjust the hoist mast tothe concave profile of the structure, precision engineered distancesleeves were inserted betweeneach 1.5 metre mast section onone side in order to give the mastthe same curve profile as that ofthe cooling tower.

A closer spacing of the tie-inanchors - at 12 metre intervalsrather than the normal 21 metres -not only helped create the curve, but also made a strong base for the

Modular and commonality are thelatest buzzwords in the industry. AS Climbers of Italy pitched thisfeature strongly when it opened forbusiness a couple of years ago andhas already built up a significantbusiness on both sides of theAtlantic. More recently Hek hasannounced that it will launch itsnew modular system range of light, medium and heavy duty mast climbing products at Bauma.Meanwhile Alimak is promising tounveil some new electronics andremote access features that mightjust change the face of the rackand pinion business?

Is this the age of the mast climber?

With an increasing number of producers coming into the mainstreammarket with ever wider and moreversatile product ranges, the marketfor mast climbers is likely to continueto grow at an increasing pace.House builders throughout Europerarely think twice about the accessthey use for new builds - they typically call in their regular scaffold company and have themerect façade scaffold. In the UK andIreland this has typically been tubeand coupler, due to its cheap purchasecost and almost unlimited versatility. However tube and coupler requiresa high level of expertise to bothdesign and erect and it is alsobecoming increasingly difficult tofind young people who are preparedto put up with the manual labourinvolved, not to mention the challengesof erecting it safely without breakingmanual handling rules.

Mast climbers are in comparisonrelatively easy to erect or install, do not require the same degree ofreconfiguring and those using themcan work at the absolute idealheight. There is no climbing up and down on ladders and of coursematerials can be loaded at groundlevel, which is far safer than in theair. With such benefits it is certainthat the mast climber is set to go mainstream and grab a far great slice of the market than itcurrently enjoys.

15 metres of free standingmast - at up to 16 degreesoff of vertical! - at the top, which was required toavoid of disruption withthe formwork.

The power supply cablealso had to be speciallyinstalled. A cable trolleywas placed underneaththe hoist cage and theground station was slightly elevated to accommodate this. Due to the changing inclinationthroughout the entire lift, cable guide problems would have been extremely likely. In order toovercome this, the cableguides were manufacturedwith special rollers that minimised the cable tension.

Wiemer & Trachte's newhoist has been working well for the last ninemonths. The unit also features additional equipment such as a frequencyconverter which considerablyreduces the starting current andthereby provides soft start and stop for a more comfortable rideand an automatic rack lubricationgrease pump.

m a s t c l i m b e r sc&aThe new £160million ManchesterCivil Courts building is the largestsuch building since the RoyalCourts of Justice were built inLondon 135 years ago. Designedby Denton Corker Marshall, theslim 16 storey structure is markedby the random cantileveredcourtrooms at each end of thebuilding and its 60 metre tall central atrium.

Its design uses fresh air and naturallight to reduce energy consumptionand deep groundwater to help cool the buildings 47 courtrooms. However, the biggest contributor to its 'sustainability' is the cladding.

Robert Simcock project managerfor cladding contractor JosefGartner said: “There are six different types of walling on thisproject, two of which proved to bea real challenge. The first was thedouble skinned facades, with analuminium/steel/glass unitised curtain wall system as the innerwater barrier with an external glassrain screen 1.5m away. The secondwas the outer wall of the 11 storeyatrium, which is glazed on bothsides. Both facades feature internalarchitectural stainless steel walkwaysbetween the two skins.”

The hanging atrium wall is believedto be the largest of its type in Europe. Its translucency emphasises the visual impact of the internal walkways;but in fact the internal void alsofunctions as a giant ventilation duct to carry warm air upwardsand outwards.

Access headaches“Two major access problems had

to be faced from the outset,” hesaid. “We had to be able to handleand fix panes of glass weighing upto 700kg each and we had to havean access solution that allowed usto work on both the inner and outerfaces from one side only.”

In practice the most challengingarea was the courtroom cantilevers,or 'fingers'. The lowest of these isat the first floor level while thehighest is nearly 100 metres aboveground. Worst of all, each can-

tilever is different, with the court-rooms protruding at seemingly ran-dom lengths on both thenorth/south elevations and on theeast, forming a gigantic threedimensional cladding nightmare.Traditional scaffolding could not bedesigned to satisfy the architectsrequirements. Suspended platformswere considered, however, theywere not stable enough and could

cranes, allowing both to operateindependently. Platforms were upto 19 metres in length with a 3.5tonne lift capacity.

Tying in was a major headache. Insome places the first feasible tie-inlocation was more than 30 metresup. So SGB installed two twin-mastmast climbers back to back andtied together. “Overall we had todevelop five special wall ties forthe job, including cantilever ties upto 3.5 metres long,” said Bryce.

In some areas the platforms couldget no closer than two metres fromthe workface so SGB installed lightweight extensions that couldbe hooked onto the front edge ofthe platforms to bridge the gap. All platforms featured full debrisnetting and were fitted with harness running lines to allow operators to safely removeguardrails for loading and unloading.

Innovative monorail To cope with the tricky task of handling heavy sheets of laminatedhigh performance glass measuring upto 2.4 x 8 metres and manoeuvringthem into position in their frames,SGB devised an innovative overhead

monorail gantry crane, which wassupported by and attached to thetwin masts of each platform. Eachmast had to rise 10 metres abovethe top floor taking the mast heightto over 100 metres and requiring aspecial roof tie-in structure.

With limited storage space on sitemost deliveries were 'just in time',with cladding components oftenbeing transferred from delivery vehicles straight onto the platformsand up to the workface.

Simcock said: “Solving the atriumand 'fingers' challenges was a massive benefit to the whole project. The platform extensionsand overhead cranes were brilliantideas, and the platforms were notjust capable of carrying a heavyload, they were stable enough todance on. The MCWPs were also much quicker to install and dismantle than conventional scaffolding would have been.”

not carry the payload, handlethe glass or reach into thefaçade. So in desperationGartner turned to SGB-Mastclimbers to see if mastclimbing work platformscould manage the task.

“The first technical challengewas the load the platformshad to carry - up to 3,500kgsat a time. Then there werethe limited opportunities fortying into the structure. And we also had to copewith the fact that the façadewasn't uniform in any directionor on any plane,” said SGB-Mastclimbers operationsmanager, Robert Bryce.

Mast sectionsIt took 12 months of brainstorming and planning forSGB and Gartner to comeup with a solution.Eventually 21 mast climberswere deployed, utilisingaround 3,000 metres of mastsections. One platform wasspecially built to fit aroundone of the project's tower

to attach the heavy granite panelsto the massive tower. Al Laith'ssolution was to surround the towerwith mast climbing work platforms. It selected HEK MSM Super mastclimbers, including six single-mastmachines with heights of 185, 160and 120 metres and two twin-mastmachines with a height of 80metres. Each system has beeninstalled with an anchor separationof eight metres, with platformlengths varying from four metresup to 19.4 metres. Each mastclimber has a different mastheight, in line with the positioningof the glass and granite panels onthe tower. The glass panels giveway to the granite panels, along an angled line. The glass panelswill be installed from the inside of the building.

Some of the reasons behind Al Laith and Dhabi Contracting'sselection of mast climbers forinstallation of the granite panelswas to dramatically reduce thenumber of anchor points required, and to speed up the erection and

In this, the first of two introductionsto the show, we give you a flavour of what you can expect. If you aredithering over whether to visit or not- do it. If you haven't been before youwill not regret it - this year promisesto be the best yet.

But leave yourself enough time to getaround the show and don't be put of by the seeming lack of hotel rooms. If you are a loyal customer with one ofthe big manufacturers you might findthat they have a room that they will behappy to turn over to you. Alternativelyuse a travel agent, they tend to haverooms that they have block booked.

If you are looking for a bargain you canalways book a hotel room well outsideof Munich, possibly in the foothills ofthe Alps. Try to select a location on therail network so that you can take thetrain directly into the showground mak-ing the journey in much easier.

This year the open-air area to the northwest is more integrated into the mainarea and is accessible without usingbridges over the dividing road. There is

also an additional one and a half halls -C3 and C4.

For those interested in cranes, accessequipment, telehandlers, lorry loadersand attachments, mast climbers, hoistsand systems scaffold - as well as asso-ciated products - there is an enormousamount of equipment to see, mainly inthe open air area to the east and north.

This is the first Bauma preview giving abrief look at the major launches that weknow are happening. Obviously, Baumabeing the world's largest equipmentshow, manufacturers gear their productdevelopment plans around its timing, and many would rather make a biggersplash at the show when launching anew product. So, as always, there willbe lots of unexpected launches duringthe show. DinoliftDinolift will be launching a new modelbut is keeping details close to its chest. However, business is on the up atFinnish trailer-mounted platform specialist. Last year's production was500 units, delivering its 5,000th Dinoduring the summer. This year the company hopes to double annual production to more than 1000 units, delivering its 6,000th unit in the process.

FassiFour new models will extend Fassi'sheavy 'Evolution' range. The F500 andF560AXP replace the F480A andF530AXP. Seven versions will be available with two to eight hydraulicextensions. Maximum lift height is 20.3 metres with the F500A maximumlifting moment is 51.5 tonne metresand 56.3 tonne metres for the F560AXP.

The F600A and F660AXP are theEvolution models of the F540A andF600AXP. Two to seven extensions and a max lift height of 20.3 metres issimilar to the F500 and F560 but liftmoments of 56.8 and 62 tonne metresgives a little more capacity.

The addition of the LO61 hydraulic jiballows even lightweight cranes to be fitted with a third articulation. The new jibhas a 1.2 metre hydraulic extension aswell as an optional manual extension. Itwill be available with the F65A - giving10.3 metres extension with a maximumcapacity of 430kg and on the F80A giving390kg and an extension of 12.15 metres.

HaulotteHaulotte will unveil its own range oftelehandlers which will include twomodels, the four tonne capacity and 17 metre lift height HTL 40-17 and the three tonne capacity, 14 metre HTL 30-14. The company says it isfocussing on the construction sectorand is aiming for 'robust and easy todrive machines'.

All telehandlers will initially be straightmasted units and built at Haulotte'snew Spanish facility. Longer term, thecompany hopes to reduce the proportionof turnover from platforms to about 50 percent. No new platforms for 2007look out for those at Conexpo 2008.

HinowaHinowa is launching an unusual machine- the tracked forklift. Aimed at the construction, road and landscapingmarkets, the unit is ideal for sites that aremuddy, sandy or have steep gradients.Basically it is a tracked dumper chassiswith a rigid masted forklift on the front.Lift capacity varies from 400-1400kg.

LiebherrOnce again Liebherr's stand is huge - thelargest at the show. With 75 exhibitsfrom its extensive construction machineryrange, it needs the 13,000 sq metre,open-air site to house the 12 mobile, 5 crawler and 9 tower cranes - to namejust the lifting exhibits!

Centre of attraction is the entirely new, nine axle LTM11200-9.1 all terraincrane. Claimed to be the most powerfultelescopic the unit has a 100 metreboom - 16 metres longer than the previous record holder the LTM1500-8.1.With a total weight of 108 tonnesincluding four outriggers and completeslewing platform with both winches, the unit can be driven on the road. The JT132.8 is the smallest in the modulardesigned, topless saddle jib range.

On the Bauma stand will be a 55 metrejib unit with a tip load of 1.7 tonnes.Maximum load is 8 tonnes in four fall operation.

One of the main advantages of this unit is the entire jib section with hoistand trolley unit, trolley, hook block, ropes, cables and control cabin are pre-assembled in the factory and transported on a single truck reducingerection time considerably.

Jost also plans to launch two 400tonne metre cranes - the JL416.24 - a luffing crane with maximum jib of 60metres and 5.1 tonnes tip load - andthe JT412.24 - a saddle jib unit with amaximum load of 24 tonnes, maximumjib length of 80 metres and 2.5 tonnesat the tip.

JLGSmallest but probably one of the mostimportant recent releases is JLG's compact Model 1230ES. Seen for thefirst time at the ARA show in Altanta, this new self-propelled mast lift weighs790kg yet provides upto 3.66m platformheight, 1.66 metreslong and 0.76m widesmall enough to be transported in a lift. The 1230ES featuresenergy saving electricmotors on the frontwheels, which JLGclaims gives up tothree times the numberof duty cycles as other models.

The Igo T70 uses a two-section telescopicmast to increase its working heightbetween 20 metres and 32 metres inincrements of 3 or 6 metres. The cranehas a maximum capacity of 4 tonnesand lifts 1.3 tonnes at its maximumradius of 40 metres.

The Igo MC13 is equipped with a traileraxle, making it highly mobile andmaneuverable. The crane is claimed to be erected in less than 30 minutes, making it a perfect candidate for short-

term jobs. Maximum capacity is 1.8 tand maximum jib is 22 metres, at whichradius the Igo MC 13 lifts 0.6 tonnes.

ManitouShown initially at Intermat, Manitouwill be officially launching theManiaccess 150TP telescopic mastedplatform. Fitted with a 5.0 metre longplatform extendible to 6.3 metres and2.3 metres wide, the unit can lift1tonne to a height of 15 metres.

Its large working platform and good liftcapacity makes the unit particularlysuited to the cladding and glass instal-lation sectors. Its four wheel drive withcrab steering allows good manoeuvra-bility and with its telescopic arm at halfmaximum height, it gives the unit aworking platform length of 15 metres ata height of 8 metres.

Snorkel, JLG, Bil-Jax, MEC,Custom, Xtreme and Sumner alsolaunched new products, but moreevolution than revolution. This isa clear indication that the aeriallift industry is maturing and that the rapid developments ofearlier years are behind us. Most development spending isnow being targeted at refiningexisting products and designingcost out. While this is likely to be of greater value to rental companies it does make the ARA less interesting.

AttendanceThis year's show was originallyscheduled to be in New Orleans, but was switched to Atlanta afterhurricane Katrina hit. The totalnumber of visitors slipped from6,490 last year to 5,613. In termsof space, the show was sold outwell before the doors opened, with25 companies going on a 'standby'list in case of cancellations. Inorder to prevent this happeningnext year the ARA has contractedfor more space in Las Vegas.

Genie 40ft Boom and tallnarrow scissor

Genie unveiled its new 40ftZ40/23nRJ boom lift - based on theZ45/25DC the new model is clearlytargeted at JLG's M400AJ. Thenew Genie has slightly more out-reach and platform height and ahigher travel speed, otherwise it isvery similar to the JLG. In order to'up the ante', Genie has installed anew AC motor direct electric drivesystem, possibly the first aerial liftto use this technology. Benefitsinclude regenerative braking; moretorque; a higher drive speed andthe ability to counter rotate thedrive wheels for better turning. However apart from its fast drive

to ensue that the machine isalways perfectly level - it will notrise above 22ft unless the jackshave been properly set. The resultis a tall, narrow scissor lift that willpass through a standard singledoorway and yet weighs only350kgs more than a 26ft narrowscissor at 2,352kgs.

Snorkel and 85ft Articulated Booms

Snorkel is runner up in terms ofinnovation with its AB85RJ. Thisnew 85ft platform height articulatingboom lift is both the first Snorkeland the first 80ft boom to offer arotating jib. The models main benefit though is its working envelope. It has a working outreachof almost 19.5 metres - an industrybest - at an up and over height of8.5metres. With zero tailswing, thanks to its dual sigma type riser, three section top boom and articulated rotating jib, this lookslike the best new product fromSnorkel in years. The company took a good number of orders forthe new model at the show.

Ho Hum inAtlantaThis year's American Rental Association's RentalShow was upbeat and successful, in spite of lowerattendances. On the other hand the absence of newproduct development was very noticeable. Time was when at least one manufacturer rolled out groundbreaking new lifts every year. Genie clearlywins the innovation award this year, with an AC drivetrain on its 40ft boom and a levelling system on anelectric scissor lift to create the GS3232.

The other new product from Genie, the GS3232 'skinny mini' electric scissor lift offers definitive benefits. The new model uses the 820mm wide chassis and basic platform from the GS2632 combined with the scissor stack from the GS3246. The big new feature is the four inboard jacks it uses

The GS3232 can still drive whileelevated up to 22ft. If working atthis height and needing to go higher, the platform must first be loweredand the jacks set with a simple autolevel button. The jacks provide the32ft height without excessive counterweight so that the 3232 canuse the same drive train as thesmaller GS models. An additionalbenefit is that the machine can beleveled by up to five degrees side toside and three degrees end to end.

SkyjackSkyjack had no new products ondisplay but had plenty to talkabout. The company showed thefinal production version of its 45ftstraight boom and the first CE unitwill be at Bauma. Skyjack has also significantly stepped up itsengineering efforts and will launcha 60ft straight boom at the end ofthis year with a 45ft articulatingboom to follow in 2008.

In order to provide more Europeaninput into its product developmentprogramme, Skyjack has employedDavid Hall who was previouslyresponsible for Manlift engineeringin Europe. In addition to expandingits aerial lift range, Skyjack is looking at telescopic handlers andcarrydeck cranes.

UpRightThere was nothing new on theUpRight stand in terms of products, but the difference from last yearcould not be more radical. In itsfirst American show with its newowner, UpRight was out to makean impact with its US relaunch. In order to do this the companyraffled a $75,000 Shelby Mustangand announced that it was close to signing a contract on a newgreen field production facility in

California. It also announced aBenelux distribution agreement withPlatform Sales Europe with rights to sell in Eastern Europe and othermarkets. As part of this deal PSEordered 1,200 scissor lifts in addition to a 100 unit order forAB38 boom lifts.

HaulotteHaulotte used the show for the USlaunch of its big boom lifts and newsales and service outlets. It alsoexhibited a Haulotte branded DinoLift which it is distributing in NorthAmerica and other markets. It stated categorically that it has noplans for a USA production facilityuntil it has the sales volume tojustify it. Alexander Saubot said “I have seen too many other companies follow the advice that to succeed in the USA you need toproduce here, only to find that aftermaking the heavy investment nothing changes. We will not makethat mistake.” Haulotte will useBauma for this year's new productlaunches with four new aerial liftproducts plus its own telehandlermodels to debut in Munich.

MECMec unveiled its new large roughterrain scissor lift range - the 91series with 25, 33 and 41ft platformheights and 900, 680 and 450kg liftcapacity respectively. All units are91 inches/2,310mm wide, 3.65metres long and include a 1.2 metreroll out deck extension. Auto leveling outrigger jacks are optional. Also new on the stand was the3772RT a 37ft/11.2 metre platformheight version of its compact roughterrain scissor. With its 1.8 metrewidth, 2.98 metre overall length and auto-levelling jacks this productoffers something new. The companyalso confirmed that it has settled itsdifferences with Manitou which hadtaken legal action against MEC'sEuropean master distributor.

JLGThe interest on the JLG stand relatedmore to its new owners, Oshkosh, rather than its products. Oshkoshbranding was already in evidenceand senior managers were presenton the stand, including chairmanBob Bohn. Oshkosh made it veryclear that it is 'a hands on - in it forthe long term owner'.

“We are owners and operators notbuyers and sellers of businesses”said Charlie Szews, interim president. He also stressed that Oshkosh has a strong belief in the power of innovation and has a history of'firsts' in its other businesses.

The onlynew productfrom JLGwas the1230ES mast lift. The company has clearlyreversed engineered an UpRightTM12, adding some significantimprovements along the wayincluding direct electric drive, saloon style gates and componentaccess. It claims to have 236

percent morebattery lifethan theUpRight andthanks to itselectric drive- fewer hosesand fittingsand thus less chanceof oil leaks.

The UK construction industry hasalways been conservative - with asmall c - about changing constructionmethods. 'That's the way we havealways done it' was a commoncomment when rejecting the benefits of a new fangled piece of equipment. The backhoe loaderfor example - for so long themainstay of the small UK buildingsite - has now been surpassed bythe telehandler (along with themini excavator) primarily becauseof the changing methods in theway we supply materials to siteand therefore a change in theconstruction process. Looming onthe horizon, literally, are the quickand easy to setup cranes thatoffer benefits that are particularlyattractive to an increasing numberof builders and contractors.

The HSE has been keen to reducesite traffic and therefore accidentsfrom equipment such as the telehandler. A compact, rapid set-up crane situated on one sideof the site can help achieve this. The use of remote controls with thecrane also allows the operator tostay with the load, positioning itwith more precision and thereforemore safely.

The use of a crane also allows construction materials to be centralised resulting in more benefits such as easier site deliveriesonce again cutting down on sitemovements - ie accidents. A crane permanently on site also reduces the number of visits by mobile cranes and timelost through site inductions andproducing paperwork on every

occasion. And its fixed locationgives known radii and correspondingsafe working load, making for simplified lift planning.

But there are two factors that haveswayed the thinking of the traditionalconstruction worker more than anyother- these cranes can save moneythrough increased productivity andnow, because they are increasingin popularity, they are easier tosource which has also lead to more competition and thus keener hire rates.

While self erecting tower cranes of all types have increased in popularity over the past five years orso, the trailer crane is just startingto gain a foothold in the UK.

Three manufacturers now offerproducts here - all German-made.Klaas distributed by Octopus UKbased in Bromsgrove, Böcker byPfaff Silberblau and more recentlyPaus available from Unic-GGR.

Germany is besotted with the self erecting tower cranes at theexpense of telehandler sales andmore recently contractors havetaken to the telescopic trailer cranefor applications such as the placingof roof trusses.

The upcoming Bauma exhibition inMunich will see the launch of atleast one new trailer crane joining a growing range of product.

Westphalia-based Böcker willunveil the lightweight aluminiumAHK 31/1400, trailer crane that canalso double up as a work platform.

The unit - which features a completely new, tandem axle trailerchassis - has a maximum lift heightof 31 metres and a maximum liftcapacity of 1.4 tonnes.

The new radio remote control alsohas remote diagnostics and fullvisual information of the load onthe hook and boom position.

Weighing 3.5 tonnes the unit canbe towed by some of the larger4x4s and once on site, can be selfpropelled if the optional drive unit ischosen. In fact we would stronglyrecommend this feature for finalpositioning of the unit.

With a man basket attached themachine has a maximum platformheight of 26 metres and lift capacityof 250kg. The platform also offers35 degrees of rotation in eachdirection allowing it to be squaredup to the working area.

According to Klaas distributor andhirer Octopus UK and its rental division 'The Little Crane Company',the trailer crane market has grownconsiderably since it first showedits machines at last year's SEDexhibition. The company now has a growing fleet of trailer cranesworking throughout the UK primarilybecause these machines canaccess and work on sites wherespace is restricted. It now has acomplete mechanical handling division which offers cranes withfully trained operators or on a barelease -self drive basis. It also offersthe option of contract lift serviceswith an 'appointed person'.

Increasing pressure to complete projects even quicker, changesto Health and Safety lifting regulations and more and moredevelopments using congested, brown-field sites has made UKand Ireland contractors look seriously at trailer and small selferecting tower cranes. Now more common, many are probablywondering why these machines have taken so long to gain afoothold in the UK. C&A takes a look at what is currently available.

Klaas K19-28 trailer crane can lift upto 1.3 tonnes and offers a maximumlift height of 28 metres. It has afour section main boom and a threesection jib for extra up and overreach resulting in a load of 250kgto a radius of 19 metres at a hookheight of 16 metres. The unit alsohas 360 degree of continuous rotation. Like the new Böcker, theKlaas can also be used with a self-leveling basket and is movablewithout the towing vehicle thanksto a self-drive jockey wheel.

Last August, Paus appointed Unic mini crane distributor GGRGlass-Unic as the UK distributor for its Skyworker aluminium trailercrane range.

The 1.2 tonne capacity, 2.1 metrewide, self-propelled chassis weighsin at just below the critical 3.5tonne trailer weight limit. The aluminium main boom and ninemetre fly jib provide a maximumlifting height of 30 metres and amaximum working radius of 25metres. Standard radio remote control and a 360 degree slew add to the cranes versatility.

However these units are more suited to short term, specific liftssuch as the installation of a set ofroofing trusses, or to carry out a liftin a specific area, for example insituations where a very low groundbearing pressure is a necessity.Longer term jobs requiring 'wholesite' coverage are far better suitedto the self erecting tower crane.

Self erectors are available with anumber of different chassisoptions, ranging from a simple setof bogie wheels for unloading purposes, low speed trailers or trolleys, to road going trailers andcrawler undercarriages. Howeverby far the most popular are thestandard units with a set of unloading wheels. Delivered viatruck the smallest units can travelwith their counterweight in placewhile the larger units unload andinstall their own counterweightsonce they are set up.

enough to make this a sensibleoption. As a result virtually all ofthe experienced companies rentingout self erectors insist on installingthe cranes themselves.

An experienced rental company canhave the crane ready and workingin a few hours. A key aspect of theset up is of course the electricalsupply available. Increasingly contractors are using generatorswhich can simplify this aspect ofthe set up. The next thing to consideris the training of those who willoperate the crane. A special CPCScourse is availablefor pedestrian controlled towercranes and it isessential that allstaff on the sitewho are likely to becalled on to operatethe crane aretrained at least tothis standard. Mostrental companieswill help arrange this.

Thanks to the relatively low costof smaller self erecting cranes, therental rates of between £500 and£800 per week will not break thebank, especially considering thebenefits of reducing the number oftelehandlers on site and avoidingsome if not all mobile crane rental.

Potain has been making small towercranes for as long as any majorproducer and has been a pioneer ofthe small self erectors. It says thatits self-erecting crane range is oneof its fastest growing product lineswithin the Manitowoc crane groupand is launching two new modelsat Bauma - the compact Igo MC 13

The theory with these cranes isthat the builder buys or rents hisown tower crane, takes it to siteand sets it up himself. In reality setting these cranes up properly isnot only the most critical part of theentire operation, it is also relativelyhigh skilled. In Germany and France, where more contractors own theirequipment, it is true they do operatethe cranes in this way. But manyyears of familiarisation and veryregular use ensures that this is asafe and normal thing to do. In theUK and to a lesser extent Ireland, few contractors have the necessaryexperience or use them often

In many parts of Europe thistype of crane is set up to handlelifting work even on single dwellingsites. Maximum lift capacity is 1.8 tonnes while the maximum jibis length is 22 metres at whichradius the unit can lift 0.6 tonnes.

Liebherr’s latest fast-erecting crane -the 22HM - is a larger version of its13HM first seen in 2002. With abigger, two tonne lift capacity andits 'super-raised' jib under hookheight of 33.4 metres, the HM22 is aimed at construction tradeslooking for good lifting capacity and compact size.

The 22HM can either be towed viaa fifth wheel coupling or drawbar or transported on a three axle truckat up to a maximum speed of 80 km per hour.

The undercarriage is, according to Liebherr, completely new.Undercarriage steering - where the crane superstructure can bereleased allowing the undercarriageto turn freely - is also joined by theability to steer the crane manuallyvia the remote control, at speedsup to 10 km per hour. At speedsmore than this, the crane switchesto trailing steering axle which

The jib can bemoved steplessly from 0-20degrees and from 20-40 degreesmaking it a lot easier when working alongside steep pitchedroofs for example. The unit also has a ballast slider for moving the cast iron ballast and fitted as standard are the frequency controlled slewing gear and rotarypower connector.

The vertical mast of the 22HM andother self erecting tower cranesgives a distinct advantage overtrailer cranes thanks to their up andover capability allowing them to setup in very narrow streets and stillclear the roofs of buildings.

Despite the slow start, there are nownumerous self erectors available in the UK, mostly from well established manufacturers based inItaly, France and Germany. One thatisn't is Mantis Cranes.

tractor unit can move the 20 tonnerig to site in a single vehicle journey. The TC25 can deliver a one tonneload to 20 metres or 750kg load to25 metres at a hook height of 19metres. According to the companyinterest and order intake lookspromising. Mantis is obviouslydoing well having moved into newpremises late last year while alsotaking on more employees.

As with many types of crane, Italyis by far and away the home to thelargest number of manufacturers of self erectors. In addition to thebig international names there area vast number of small local

suppliers, some of whom havemade it to the UK.

Terex Comedil, one of the largestproducers has launched the newCBR 40H which can lift the sameas the smaller CBR 36H despitehaving a hook height 2.7 metreshigher and a jib four metres longer. While Comedil is a major player inthe UK top slewing tower cranemarket is has been less successfulwhen it comes to its self erectingcranes - in spite of a wide product range.

Another Italian producer Vicario hasbeen sold in the UK for many yearsby Vanson cranes of Granthamwhich is celebrating its 25th yearin business. Vanson markets the

line under its own name and untilrecently also operated a rentalfleet. However in October last year the company sold most of itsrental fleet to City Lifting (See Face to Face page 58) in order to concentrate its efforts on sellingtower cranes. The company offersa range of 12 different models ofself erectors starting with the VC15(See Rob the builder opposite).

Cattaneo - available in the UKthrough Weaving Machinery nearEvesham - launched three newcranes at the end of last year - the CM73A, the CM76B and the largest the CM90S4. Mostcompact is the CM73A measuring11.9 metres long and 2.95 metreshigh in travel mode. The crane can set up in a space no largerthan 3.3 metres square and lift750kg to a 21 metre radius at aheight of 18.2 metres. With thisload, the jib can raise by 18degrees above horizontal, increasing the hook height by fivemetres. With lighter loads (500kg)the jib can raise up to 30 degreesgiving a maximum under hookheight of 27 metres.

FB Gru - available from DunhamCrane Hire - has launched the compact, 12.2 tonne tow weightGA136 which features twin cylinders to provide a faster

Rob the builderVanson Cranes recently supplied a VC15 tower crane to smallbuilder Robin Bonds Builders of Barnstable. This self-contained,compact unit, the smallest in the Vanson range is aimed at smallsites and is ideal for use in congested urban or even retail environments where it would normally be impractical or costly for other types of construction cranes to operate. It has a retracted transport width of only 1.6metres, 2.2 metres high andonly requires 2.7metres square of ground space.

In spite of its diminutive size, it can lift 1.5 tonnes to seven metresradius at 15 metres height or will take 600 kg to 15 metres at thesame height, maximum hook height is 19 metres.

“As we mainly build single or double unit houses and small factory buildings we have very much appreciated this small and manoeuvrable crane” said Robin Bonds, the company's managingdirector. “Not only is it very compact and very versatile, but it solvesmost of our Health and Safety problems by taking away the need formanual lifting. This is now done by the crane, so we don't have tohave guys going up and down ladders carrying materials. Instead thecrane is used to lift all of the roof slates, trusses, tiles, blocks etc. It is a superb piece of kit, which we get a lot of use out of and I amsurprised that there aren't more of them around.”

“It is easy to use and training is fairly straightforward and this onlycosts around £300 per person, which isn't excessive. The VC15 isideal for the small builder like us,” he said.

The VC15 is completely self-contained, and incorporates a ballast handling derrick to avoid the need to bring in lifting equipment. As a result it can be erected and dismantled using just two people. The jib can also be folded to avoid violating another party's airspace.Although it is essential that the operators are properly trained to do this.

Once erected, it is well suited to three and four storey constructionwork and has the added advantage of a minimal physical impact onthe site. Only a single phase 3KW mains or 5 KVA generator isrequired to power the crane.

As with all of Vason's VC cranes the VC15 includes 'soft start' on each of the crane's hoist, trolley and slew functions. This technology enables the load to be positioned much more precisely and also creates a smooth hook action.

“Once our clients have had a VC crane they soon realise the cost savings that can be achieved due to its operational efficiencies, speed of operation, low operating costs says Vanson Crane's managing director,Trevor Vanson. “Also, its ability to reduce handling risk is becoming an important factor in a builder's' decision making process.”

The VC15 is the smallest self erector in the rangefrom Vanson Cranes.

When folded, self erectors are smallenough to gain access through some surprisingly small openings.

erection time. Working from a 4.2 metre square outrigger base, the unit has a one tonne lift capacity at 36 metres with a hookheight of 22.5 metres. The jib canalso be raised to give an increasedhook height of 30 metres reducingthe radius to 34.9 metres. Dunhamsays that it sold around 30 cranesinto the UK last year but like mostmanufacturers, this figure is on theincrease. Dunham is unusual in thatthe company is also a builder anddeveloper and has been using selferecting tower cranes on its sitesfor many years. It only decided tostart selling them two years ago.

Several other Italian companiessuch as Gru Dalbe - with its HS380 - and Gelco Clever Cranemanufacture self erectors but asyet they are not available in the UK or Ireland. As well as offeringconventional self erectors, GelcoClever Crane has an interesting self lifting chassis option where the base of the crane can be jacked up by 2.75 metres to allow car or pedestrian accessunderneath.

The unit also is very short, courtesyof three section telescopic tower, and with the four wheelsteering motorised chassis whichcan cope with gradients up to 25 degrees to manoeuvre itself into very tight spots. The telescopictower also allows the height of the crane to be changed when working.

The Gelco Clever Crane's 4WD chassis can cope with gradients up to 25 degrees..

Clever Crane's telescopic chassis allowsup to 2.75 metres of head height givingaccess to cars and pedestrians.

However as the market growsand powered access expandsinto an ever wider range of applications, a greater number ofcompanies find themselves usingone or more lifts almost constantly. If you are in this position it couldbe worth looking at a lift or twoof your own. You can of coursebuy new, however if the cost puts you off you might well beconsidering a second hand lift. Inthe following pages we provide afew tips that might prove helpful.

Consider how involved you want to get

You have decided to buy secondhand, but where do you start?

The first two things you should askyourself are:

1. How much effort do you wantto put into your purchase?Tracking down the very best deal might consume more in time and expenses, not to mention distraction from your day job, than you save from finding a bargain.

2. What sort of back-up supportdo you want? If you need orwant to pick up the phone andhave your hand held all the way, there is no point in buying a usedlift from the USA or at an auction, sight unseen. It could end upcosting more than a new machine!

If you want to make it easy andstress free you should look at buying from a reputable companythat will make your purchase assimple as buying a new lift. We willaddress this type of purchase later.

In the meantime we'll consider theoptions for the more adventurousbuyer, some of these only makesense if you get a real kick out oftracking down a bargain-basementdeal or you are buying a large number of lifts.

The options include: Large public Auctions, such asthose held by Ritchie brothers. These massive events, often lastingthree days, mostly offer generalplant and earthmoving equipment. However the number of aerial liftsgoing on sale is increasing steadilyand range from unused models frominventory to units that barely function. All lifts must be sold on the daywith no reserves allowed. The verybest deals are to be had when thereare few lifts in the sale thus failingto attract buyers for aerial lifts, becareful though that the low pricedoes not tempt you into buying a liftthat is totally unsuitable for yourapplication. Although if it is a bargainthat is simply too good to pass up,it might be worth taking it homeand using it as a trade-in against anew or used product that is closerto what you need.

You can now bid on-line at theseauctions, however we would adviseagainst this unless you have hadsomeone physically inspect themachines first.

Single company auctions:

There has been an increase in thenumber of auctions of a single company's equipment, usually a liquidation sale. But Hewden, theUK's largest rental company, asstarted holding auctions each yearto dispose of its surplus equipment. The rules are the same but at leastyou know where the equipmentcomes from and it might be morelocal to you.

Buying on line:

This is an increasingly popular wayto buy many items and anyone tradingin used aerials will have a web sitewith a list of available machines.Unless you know and have a relationship with the company youare buying from we would stronglyadvise against making a purchasesight unseen. It is better to use theweb to make contact then inspect themachine and conduct the purchase inthe traditional face-to-face manner. At least in the first instance, aftergetting to know who you are buyingfrom and building up a layer of trust, web and email can work nicely.

Buying across the pond

The low dollar makes used machinesadvertised on American web sitesor publications look very attractiveindeed. Beware though, aerial liftssold in North America are built toANSI specifications and rarely carryCE approvals. A JLG sold in theUSA can be quite different from theCE version sold in Europe.

a used liftAerial work platforms are largely arental item, with such a wide variety ofproduct types and heights it suits mostpeople to rent what they want, whenthey want it. In markets such as the UK,Ireland, Sweden and Holland over 85percent of all aerial lifts are rentedrather than purchased.

This need not put you off, unlessyou felt that our first two warningsregarding effort and support, applyto you even 'somewhat' if so skipthe next section.

If you are interested consider thatboom lifts are easier to convert thanscissor lifts, diesel is simpler thanDC power and larger is more practical than small. With thesethree pointers you could end up

with a really good deal. Most manufacturers have designed theirboom lifts, particularly the largerones, to convert fairly easilybetween Ansi and CE, you willthough need the manufactures co-operation to obtain CE certification and could be questionedat the port for importing non CEmarked products.

A general rule is to forget smallelectric machines, these require farmore modification, including batterycharger, gates, guardrails and oftencounterweight, not to mention theoverload system…. life is too short.

Beware definitions 'Good', 'Excellent' and Rental-Ready

Another point to be aware of is that“good condition” and “rental ready”often has a different meaning oneach side of the Atlantic. Manybudding business relationships haveturned nasty over these definitions. To quote an actual example: A reputable rental company I knowin North America sold a container oflifts to a reasonable European buyer. He carried out remedial work on thelifts, tested and charged them and

in good faith and confirmed to hisbuyer that they were in good condition and ready to rent. Whenthe buyer opened the container inhis yard he was horrified. Hethought the paint on the 30 monthold machines was poor, the solidtyres had chunks out of them and tohim they looked scruffy and not atall rentable. The buyer thought he hadbeen lied to and was most upset.

This highlights the biggest singleproblem when buying used equipmentat a distance, one persons 'excellent'is another mans 'scrapper'. This can be bad enough neighbour toneighbour but the gulf can be evenlarger internationally. Avoid buyingfrom across the pond unless youare doing it regularly, and can develop the relationships and the systems to deal with CE conversions, even then it is best to avoid small electric scissors.

Less adventurous buyingSo having explored some of themore exotic ways of buying usedaerial lifts what about advice forthose who want a nice machine, low mileage - one lady owner withsome local support?

Our definitive advice is contact oneof the companies that has made abusiness of supplying good usedmachines to end users and localrental companies. The number ofcompanies doing this has expandedrapidly in recent years, mostly divisions of larger rental companiesas they renew their equipment more frequently and seek to get the maximum value for their old machines.

Youwill quickly note that the averageage of the lifts being sold by onecompany will vary compared toanother. Some hirers such as Easi-UpLifts have adopted a policyof changing out their fleet everythree years and will mostly havevery young machines for sale, while others prefer to run units onfor five years and some longerthan that and so will have lowerprices. It all depends on what you are looking for.

Try a manufacturerManufacturers or their distributorscan be a good source for usedequipment, while the number ofmachines that they trade-in hasreduced in recent years, most

companies still do part exchangedeals and can be a particularlygood source for used examples of their own models and willsometime offer a good warranty. The best deals can come fromthose that are not set up to sellused equipment, as they simplylook to get used machines off theirbooks and out of their hair beforethe ends up rotting in the cornerof their yard.

Buy from those you know

If you rent machines from one of the larger companies, they will almost certainly also have a re-sale department that will behappy to sell you a good used lift. As you have an ongoing relationship with them, theyshould make sure that you are well looked after. Do shop around though before making afinal decision.

of a platform capable ofsupporting a 70 tonnecrane at the CorusSteelworks in Scunthorpe.Commissioned by CraneServices which was contracted to slab-castersDanieli Davy Distington, the project was initiallydelayed by six hours dueto treacherous winds but was completed after a two-phase installation.

Phase one outside of the pit, involved the placing of 60box panels to allow a 400tonne crane to move inclose enough to be able tofirst of all lift thematerials intothe 25 metredeep steelworkspit, to build upthe platform, followed by the70 tonne crane.Phase two, thebuilding of the

platform in the pit, involved 800 timber railway sleepers,75 half-sleepers and 300sandbags to build a sleepercribbage. This was then fullydecked with a further 70 boxpanels to create the finalpanel platform for the craneto operate from.

Mark Barratt, senior projectmanager at Eve Trakway, said:’This was an extremelydifficult procedure made all the more tricky by the conditions we faced. In theend it was a combination ofsuperb teamwork and experience that ensured the project was completedsuccessfully.’

ALLMI focusc&a

The first task was to set out aimsand objectives, the underlyingtheme of which was to raise thestandard of loader crane operators. An application process wasformulated, requiring applicants todetail their standards while providingthe Forum Executive Committeewith the ability to identify areas for

improvement and provide anynecessary advice and guidance. The Forum is providing outsideorganisations with an idealcommunication channel to theUK's lorry loader owners. The Health and Safety Executive(HSE), for example, has beenrepresented at two of the threegeneral meetings held to date, providing members with guidanceon important issues, such as workingat height, falls from vehicles, thelegislative requirements surroundingthe use of lorry loaders and safetyalerts resulting from accidents. While VOSA (Vehicle and OperatorServices Agency) has used ALLMIto inform members of the requirementsfrom vehicle inspectors in relationto lorry loaders.

The two sides of ALLMI complementeach other extremely well. On the onehand are the crane manufacturersand service companies, which canprovide technical expertise, while on the other hand the operatorsprovide invaluable feedback to the manufacturers on the products andservices they are producing.

The interchange of ideas andopinions takes place partly viageneral meetings, but also throughthe Forum’s representatives on theALLMI Technical and TrainingCommittees, which between themproduce guidance on all aspects oflorry loader use. Amongst otherthings, the Forum has already had

a direct involvementin the developmentof the recentlyreleased ALLMISlinger / Signallercourse, the revisionof the ALLMI Codeof Practice and thetraining programmefor thoroughexaminations andload tests of lorryloaders, which is

due to be released later this year.

The Forum's representative on theTraining Committee, Peter Duckettof WTB Group, comments: “Beingpart of the ALLMI TrainingCommittee has been a pleasure anda privilege. Through my representation, end users are provided with theopportunity to actually shape anddevelop the industry's leading trainingprogrammes in accordance withtheir needs and requirements.”

When it comes to issues that memberswant to discuss in between meetings, the recently introduced on-lineForum allows members to discussloader crane related issues over theweb. While it has been an eventfulfirst year there are more developmentsplanned for the year ahead as theOperators Forum gathers momentum.

The CPCS has announced a consultation process in preparation for amajor review of the scheme. The CPCS management committee saysthat it has already listened to the needs of scheme users and has takenon board the comments, criticisms and suggestions over the past 12months from employers, its road shows and opinion in the media. It hasused this to develop recommendations for the future of the scheme. The consultation process, it says, is the next step in forming a blueprint forthe future of the scheme. The consultation period will run until mid May, withrevised plans for the scheme being unveiled in June. Key proposed changes by the committee include:• The introduction of a new CPCS technical test for all entrants to the scheme,

removing the requirement for an Intermediate Certificate end test. • To bring the Health and Safety test to the beginning of the qualification

process to ensure workers are aware of health and safety risks beforeundertaking plant training or the CPCS Technical Test.

• Streamlining of administration processes to simplify and speed up paperwork• Requiring candidates to register for the S/NVQ to be able to obtain a red

'Trained Plant Operator' card and reducing its validity to one year toencourage candidates to progress through the qualification.

• Removing age and experience criteria - the Health and Safety Test,CPCS technical test and relevant S/NVQ are all that would be requiredto obtain your card.

• Removal of the requirement for candidates to hold their Trained PlantOperator (red) card for six months before progressing to blue -to simplify progression through the scheme.

JUST THE TICKET!

The association has agreed withthe Health & Safety Executive(HSE) that the utilisation ofPASMA's latest Tower InspectionRecord, designed specifically foruse with mobile access towers, constitutes full compliance with the inspection and recordkeeping requirements of theWork at Height Regulations.

Measuring just 195mm x 70mm,they provide a quick, simple andeffective means of identifying andrecording the status of a mobileaccess tower on site. This latest PASMA safety item can be ordered on-line atwww.pasma.co.uk

Other PASMA safety products available include the Operator'sCode of Practice, the PASMASafety Video/CD and the PASMAPocketCard.

For the record

17 year old winsfirst PASMA shield Sam Parker, 17, was the winner of the inaugural PASMA Shield at the LeedsCollege of Building, the UK's only specialist further education constructioncollege. A second year roof, slating and tiling student, he is currentlyemployed by G Horne Roofing Contractors Ltd.

Sam Parker at the awards ceremony with guest speaker, Robert Higgs OBE,chair of the Heating &Ventilation Contractors’Association (L), and WilliePoching of Leeds Rhinos (R).

It could reasonably be argued that an operative using a mobileaccess tower, when it has beenassembled and is in its completedstate, need not be trained andcompetent in assembly, alterationand dismantling. However, suchan operative would neverthelessrequire to be trained and demonstrate competence in thebasic principles of work at height.

The Advisory Committee on Workat Height Training (ACWAHT) hasdefined a competent person as

"a person with sufficient professionalor technical training and knowledge, actual experience and authority toenable them to:

Carry out their assigned duties atthe level of responsibility allocatedto them. Recognise potential hazardsrelated to the work (or equipment)under consideration. Detect anydefects, or omissions in that work(or equipment), recognise any implications for health and safetycaused by those defects and omissions, and be able to specify a remedial action to mitigate those implications."

The answer to the essential question posed is that, since assembling, altering or dismantling a mobile access tower is also "work at height", the operativeengaged in assembling, altering ordismantling must be competent inthis activity, "or if being trained, issupervised by a competent person".[WAHR, Reg. 5]

This leads to the conclusion thatmobile towers should not be assembled, altered or dismantled by non-PASMA (or equivalent)trained operatives, since theRegulations state that such activitycan only be undertaken by such a person if that person is beingtrained, and is under the supervisionof a person who is competent toconduct that training.

It is PASMA's assertion that a person who is trained as a user isnot competent to train other users, since they would not have beentrained or assessed on their abilityto "carry out their assigned duties at the level of responsibility allocated to them", i.e. in this case, their ability to train others.

Can PASMA user cardholderssupervise untrained operatives?

Making access safe, practical and productive will be the theme of this year's Access Industry Forum's Conference at the NEC on Wednesday, 23 May 2007. The AIF has arranged an impressive line-up of expertspeakers including Bill Callaghan, Chair of the Health & Safety Commission, and Ian Greenwood, head of the HSE's Falls from Height Team.

Based on case studies featuring familiar workplace situations, the AIF team - including PASMA - will be demonstrating different solutions to the same problem, highlighting the pros and cons in each case. If booked before 20 April 2007 tickets cost just £95.00 each, including lunch. Email [email protected]

Compared to other crane oraccess industry reports by 'generalresearch companies' that areoften not worth the paper theyare printed on, this is relativelyaccurate, quite thoughtful andwhile expensive for what it is -useful. Its main problem lies inthe fact that it tries to do toomuch and in spite of this it stillincludes a lot of filler, includingpublicly available construction

and spending statistics.A good deal of this informationis only marginally relevant andalong with the fact that itattempts to cover the full gamutof access equipment, both from amanufacturing and a rental per-spective means that it is forcedto skim on detail.

However if you are preparing abusiness plan for your bank thiswould be a handy report to useand reference in order to spruceup your presentation.

The report is priced at £595 andcan be ordered directly fromAMA Research on 01242-235724 or on line atwww.amaresearch.co.uk.

Steve Martin is the founder andowner if Xmo Strata a leading UKsign maker and contractor. Hefounded the company six years agohaving spent nine years with anothersign company. Angry and frustratedwith the corner cutting and dirtytricks of his industry he decided towrite a book exposing the industry'sdark underside and throwing downthe gauntlet to the cowboys. Hesays that he expects 'heavy flak' forhis public stance but says that “ifthere is going to be flak, bring it on.”

The largest section of the book, which is boldly entitled 'SafetyQuality Tricks and Lies. Dirtytricks in the British sign industryand 100 questions your signcompany doesn't want you to ask!'

takes the form of asking andanswering 100 questions thatMartin says you should ask yoursign company.

He runs through everything fromcredentials to finance, spendingmost of his time on health and safety, where he claims too many signcompanies cut corners and takechances. He particularly urges signbuyers to demand that suppliersprovide proof of employee training, especially when they are using alloytowers or aerial lifts. He also pointsout how an accident on a customer'spremises could land them in courtalongside the sign contractor whomay be long gone by the time thecase is heard.

Finally he exposes a number of dirty

tricks that he saysway too many signcontractors practice, and most of which areclearly fraudulent. He offerssuggestions and tips on howto catch such charlatans out.

It is very obvious that Martin hasa vested interest in exposing suchpractices and it is not likely to makehim the most popular guy at industryconferences. He does risk comingacross as over sanctimonious attimes, however it is refreshing forsomeone to provide such a candidlook at his own industry while stillactive within it.

If you buy any volume of outdoorsignage or are a supplier to signcompanies, this book is worth buying.

Be warnedthough it is not a

particularly 'good read'but more an informative eye openerto dip in and out of.

The JLG 10MSP must be the smallest scale model of an aerial lifton the market in spite of the fact that it is to the hefty 1/32 scalethat JLG is using on its latest series of scale models. The little model of its self propelled stock picker is highly detailed andexceptionally well made. The platform extends to full height, with atight tolerance on the mast sections, opening saloon style gates andfully steering front wheels. The loading shelf is adjustable as it isin the real thing.

All in all an excellent model and one that will not hog shelf space likethe 1/32 versions of JLG ultra booms, telehandlers and big scissors.

To the editor,

The increasing amount of tower crane accidents seems to be dividing opinions. Some say that it is unfortunate, just like buses, none turnup for ages and then three at the same time.

I beg to differ.

Accidents happen because of at least one failure in a particular area. Whether they happen all at the same time, or are nicely spread outisn't the issue. The main reason for the recent accident increase is a reduction of overall standards in the tower crane industry - primarilydue to the lack of an experienced, fully trained and committed workforce.

Let's start at the top - the crane drivers. Not being ageist (or any ist) but younger drivers do not have the experience or the commitment tothe job. This is exemplified by the fact that many sit for hours on mobile phones during work time - some even saying they can't do a liftbecause they are on the mobile! As in the current radio ads that warn us about driving a car and being on a mobile - it is very difficult todo two things that take effort and concentration at the same time.

This point has been raised before - by Geoffrey Marsh chairman of the CPA's crane's committee - so I am not the only one.

Drivers also don't have the mechanical sympathy required. Maybe it is lack of experience, maybe current courses are not sufficient, maybeit is just the attitude of today's younger workers. And because there is a demand for drivers, ones that are not great can get another jobquite easily.

What can be done? Encourage more into the industry, train them better, give them more experience and easiest of the lot - get rid of themobile phone!

Dear Sir,

I work at Manchester Airport in the Airfield Operations Department where the main part of my job is Aerodrome Safeguarding, which basically means protecting the airport's operations against temporary and permanent obstacles. As such, I am looking for a way of communicating the safety obligations incumbent upon Crane or aerial lift operators wishing to use lifting equipment in the vicinity of airports.

We seem to have differing experiences when dealing with crane operators and contractors. Some operators seem to be aware of the limitations involved during operations in the vicinityof the airport, and contact us well in advance of any lifting operation with the appropriatedetails, whilst others appear to be blissfully unaware that they need to contact us at all.

Would it be possible for you to publish an article in your Magazine in order to raise awareness amongst the crane operator community? I would also be grateful if you could possibly be able to supply me with contact details for any Associations and other IndustryPublications there may be.

I hope to hear from you soon,

Yours sincerely,

Shaun McAleer,

Airfield Operations,

Manchester Airport.

(Ed: We contacted Mr McAleer and are now planning to cover this important subject in detail in a

subsequent issue of Cranes&Access In the meantime it might be worth reminding your operators and

customers on the need to notify airports when working with high equipment near an airport.)

Dear Sir,

I am an avid reader of Cranes&Access and think that what you are doing with the magazine is first class. On a couple of occasions however I have thought thatyou have been wrong to have allowedyour pages to include some personalisedcomments. One concerned commentsfrom Malcolm Bowers and more recently a comment in your annual rental rateguide pointed at an individual. Unless you are trying to take the publication in the direction of the Sun then I think such personalised commentsare out of place and do you no credit.

That is my opinion but I know that I amnot alone in sharing this view.Yours Sincerely,

City Lifting celebrated 25 yearslast year. Yet in a relatively short space of time, much haschanged with the company andthe equipment.

“My father was in the formworkand concreting business in the '60s and early '70s and used selferecting cranes mounted ontrucks,” said Jepson. “I can remember we had three cranes

Boilot Petolat BP1000s on a LeylandOctopus a Thames Trader and a GuyInvincible - several of those are nowcollector's items. He either usedthem on his contracts or hired themout to other concrete firms. Whenthe formwork firm finished hebecame “Lorry Mounted TowerCranes Ltd.”

However, rather than following his father into the family business, young Jepson trained as a toolmaker and then mechanicalengineering at college. Unfortunately(or fortunately) when he qualifiedthere were either no jobs for toolmakers or the money was poor,so he ended up working for hisfather. At this point the yard was anold bombsite in Bow, East London.

“We were renting off the counciland it was very cheap, but weneeded more space. So my fatherdecided - against everyone's advice

- to get a place in the Isle of Dogs in the days when everyone was leaving the area.”

More by luck than judgement, thesite later was bought by the DailyTelegraph (for rather a lot of money)for one of the early developments ofthe 'new' Canary Wharf. In factJepson seems chuffed that fromCity Lifting's new premises inPurfleet, he can see Canary Wharfwhere it all started and where heworked when it was derelict bigsheds and empty docks.

Jepson's first direct experience withcranes was operating one of hisfather's Munster self erectors. Herecalls the one and a half hours ittook to set-up the crane outside thesite before driving it, fully rigged, intofinal position. “Stabiliser/levellingjacks were 'mandraulic',” he says,“ie turned by hand.”

The fleet grew with the addition oftwo static cranes - Potain 427'sbought from utilities contractor J.Murphy & Sons - but a disagreementwith his father resulted in Jepson, now 23 years old, leaving and setting up on his own.

“I initially ran the two Potains, droveone and rented out the other,” he said.“Living in Romford and securing a longcontract in Woking before the M25 wasbuilt meant that if I wasn't passingthrough Parliament Square before5.50 every morning, I was late!”

It was in the early days that Trevorgot used to working seven dayweeks - something he still does.

The two cranes expanded to fourand Jepson started working withother crane people and companies. This resulted in him gaining a goodreputation as a fitter/repairer andoffering these services more andmore through the early 1980'swhich proved quite lucrative.

“I used to have a fixed 4 hour minimum call-out charge and diagnosed the problem usually within half an hour. This was farquicker and cheaper than any otherservicing companies which seemedto take days to sort out cranebreakdowns.”

City Lifting grew through the late80's so that by the start of the 1991recession it had a fleet of 23cranes, all Potain.

CityLifting-‘it does what it says on the tin’City Lifting has provided specialist lifting solutionsfor the last 25 years. With most work in andaround London, the company has built up a variedfleet to cope with contractors requirements in thecongested city. Mark Darwin of Cranes & Accessmanaged to intercept its busy managing director,Trevor Jepson just long enough to find out a bitmore about the company.

“That recession was really hard,”recalls Jepson, “very few craneswere out on rental and even whenthey were, many of the companieshiring them went bust so we didn'tget any money.”

To keep his head above water, heturned to the booming Far East market, selling most of his fleet toMalaysia, Thailand and Singapore. He however looked to Dubai usinghis skills to gain repair or erectioncontracts. But he would limit histrips to a maximum of two weeksat a time. One contract was for just one day!

During this time, the business waskept ticking over in the UK by hisbrother-in-law Phil who has beenwith the company for many years -since he was 20. Jepson has neverstopped diagnosing and fixing problems and dovetails well withhis business partner of 10 years,Bob Jones, who's main role is looking after all aspects of thetower crane side of the business.Jepson's wife Clare also works inthe business as well as his eldestson Daniel.

Today City Lifting has a fleet of 120 machines and employs about65 staff.

The company is probably bestknown for its fleet of Spieringshydraulic folding cranes, the firstbeing purchased in 2000/2001. Thecompany still has one of the firstcranes made by Leo Spierings -number 10 of the 500 or so thathave now been manufactured -although it is not currently in use.

“We bought it second-hand,” saidJepson. “It has an old type engineand the steering is poor, not manydrivers like taking it out any more.

Each Spierings we purchased hadimprovements over the last, theyhave got better and better. I nowthink they are without doubt, thebest cranes for the job. We currentlyhave one of the new, seven axleSpierings SK2400 - AT7 on order for delivery in June and the oldmachine will be used in partexchange. We also have a five axle on order.”

In total, City Lifting has about 14Spierings, 12 mobiles - mainlyDemag - with capacities up to 100tonnes, three mini cranes (Meadaand Unic) and the rest top slewingtower cranes. The self erector fleetwas boosted to about 30 in Octoberwhen it purchased the VansonCranes' Vicario rental fleet whichaccording to Jepson are 'strong, simple, reliable and easy to drive'.

“I like the Demag cranes and theCity versions in particular. The AC55City and AC30 City are invaluable inLondon where the more compactthe crane the better,” he says. New additions to the mobile fleetsometime later in the year willinclude a four axle, 100 tonneDemag AC 100 and a 35 tonne AC 35.

City Lifting has a depot further northin Grantham purely as storage for thetower cranes. If any maintenance or repair work is required, thecranes are brought down to themain workshops and the new paintshop facility in Purfleet.

The company is currently re-organising the new facility but is struggling because of the continuous amount of work and the quantity of equipment thatcame from its two previous yards in Brentwood.

The company is also the Comansaagent in the UK and offers the fullrange of its flat top cranes for saleand hire. However, due to thenature of the UK tower crane hiremarket with most major hirers 'inbed' with a manufacturer, they areeffectively just for hire.

“We are in the process of gettingrid of some of the older towercranes but keeping the TornborgMagni S46's and looking at a newJost hydraulic luffer to replace thesmaller Tornborg Magni S40's.”

The Magni S46 is a slightly unusualcrane in that it has a 'K-type' articulated jib, jointed at the half-way point, making it ideal forworking close to other cranes orwhen oversailing adjacent propertyis an issue. It also has Wolff 100 Bluffers and Potain 331B's - similarhe says to the new IG70.

City Lifting has more recentlydipped its toe into the mini cranemarket with the introduction ofthree Maeda and Unic mini cranes. In fact it has ordered the first ofUnic's new URW-706 currentlyunder development. With a sixtonne lift capacity at three metresand hook height of 19.5 metres, the 706 claims to be the world'slargest 'spider crane'. The companyalso runs a zero tail swing, remotecontrol Manitex 30124 boom-truckcrane which is useful in certainstreet applications.

Two other very portable cranes worthy of a mention in the fleet are a seven tonne capacity VansonVC20 mini luffing roof top cranewhich can be broken down intopieces no heavier than 120kg, taken in a lift and hand assembled if required, and five Ferro minitower cranes which again can be erected by hand.

“We used a Ferro mini tower cranefor the regeneration of Brighton pierafter the fire - specifically forrebuilding the big dipper,” saidJepson, “it was the only crane lightenough yet with enough height andlifting capacity to do the job safely.”

“Although I still enjoy being at thesharp end of fixing cranes, it highlightsa problem that affects the wholecrane industry but particularly in towercranes - a lack of good techniciansand drivers,” he says. “Drivers needto be trained to a higher standardand be more mechanically aware ofthe equipment for which they areresponsible. They all sign for thecondition of the crane every weekbut when I visit site it can be a realeye opener.” The new CPA towercrane interest group booklets forproject managers and crane driver will explain and spell outeverybody's responsibilities.

Until recently City Lifting insisted onsupplying its own drivers for everyhire but with the introduction of themini cranes it has made an exception.

“Drivers tend to have their ownmachine, but will take out similarmachinery,” he said. “Most of ourdrivers like the Spierings cranes, butfor a few the 30 metre high cab is abit of a problem. These guys stickwith the Terex Demags.”

“We currently have very good drivers but I am looking for a towercrane electrician and three fitters -one vehicle and two for towercranes. We advertise locally but itis getting increasingly difficult tofind good people, primarily becausethere are no specific college courses. This is a good industry to work in,school children just need a bit moreencouragement and the industryneeds to be more positive aboutwhat it can offer.”

Treadcheck is a new system thatcan automatically check the depthof tread as the vehicle drives overa sensory mat.As the truck tyre rolls over thesensor, the recorded changes inthe magnetic field are used togive the relative height of theinterior tyre construction fromthe horizontal plane. This is thencompared against data from anew tyre giving a very accuratetread depth reading. And becausethe system takes multiple readingsacross the tyre, uneven wear canalso be identified. The tyre mat is wide enough toaccommodate two side by side

tyres as found on a truck, trailer orcoach. If the mat is connected tothe internet a tyre reading can beanywhere in the world for anindividual truck. Each tyre can alsobe identified by a unique radio tagthat can be detected by the matcontroller as the vehicle approaches.

Used in conjunction with managementsystem software such as Truckfile, information can be set and storedby the owner on the minimum nonserviceable depth as well as anadvisory depth for a warning of low tread.

“The science has now been provedand we have a working prototype,”said Paul Clarke managing director

of Treadcheck. “We nowintend to go intopre-production testing, pilot the first few matswith operators and thenlater in the year get theproduct out to the marketboth in the UK Europe andthe rest of the world.”

The Treadcheck researchproject has been helpedover the past two years bythe European Commissionand has partners from severalEuropean countries, but the UKhas been chosen as the first marketin which to release the product.

historic cranesc&a

The powered access industry is no better. Although a youngerindustry there have been somerecent excellent examples ofolder truck mounted lifts beingfully restored for promotional purposes.

The excavator has a shared historywith lattice cranes, so we askedArthur Smith to tell us about thework of the Excavator PreservationTrust in the hope that it might spura few crane and access companiesinto taking some action to preservehistoric machines of the past.

Since the 1920's the rope operatedexcavator has been one of the mostuseful and versatile machines in the building of modern Britain. The smaller universal excavatorequipped as a shovel, drag-shovel,skimmer, dragline, grab or cranewas from many years the mainstayof building and construction sites.Larger stripping shovels wereemployed in quarrying, obtainingthe raw materials for roads andbuildings. The biggest machines of all, the walking draglines, wereengaged in removing overburden togain access to coal deposits etc.

Sadly, for those interested in allthings mechanical, the excavatorswe once knew are disappearing. The first to go was the skimmer, replaced by wheeled loading shovels, then rope operated shovelsand drag shovels were supersededby hydraulic excavators. Still hold-

ing their own, at least to somedegree, are the larger draglines, grabs and cranes with models ofthe latter now capable of liftingloads of up to 2,000 tonnes andheights of up to 200 metres. The loss of these machines is sadbut inevitable, as has been the lossof the British manufacturers whichproduced them, such as Ruston-Bucyrus, Priestman, Ransomes & Rapier, Smith Rodley and Newton Chambers.

We are fortunate however that asmall number of people have recognised the historical importanceof these older excavators and theundoubted interest in this type ofmachinery. Ian Hartland havingfound a use for an old excavatorsome years ago began collectingthem at his quarry in Threlkeld,Cumbria. Then in 1985 he readPeter Grimshaw's recently publishedbook 'Excavators' which directedattention onto the different types ofexcavators and their manufacturers. He promptly contacted Grimshaw, a life long enthusiast of thesemachines and put him in touch with Philip Peacock. Peacock livedin Hull, the former home ofPriestman and had grown up withan avid interest in its machines, later becoming a plant fitter, driverand finally a manager with a cranehire company.

The three became instrumental inthe formation of 'The VintageExcavator Trust', starting with a

'portakabin' at Hillhead in 1997 andan advert in Camden MiniatureSteam Services Book. Suddenlypeople who thought they were theonly ones interested in old cranesand excavators were broughttogether, becoming members of the Trust. Hartland's quarry becameits base and members started sending their own machines to joinHartland's collection. There are now over fifty machines on display, many of them in working order andothers in the course of restoration. Each year, in May and September, a working weekend is held at thequarry where members of the public can see a variety of themachines in operation. Addedattractions include a mining museum and the restored narrow

The second most numerous brandat the Trust is Priestman. Again the various models and types are well represented, many of them belonging to Adrian Patterson whohas a well equipped workshop atThrelkeld. His collection boasts acomplete range of Cubs from theMkI to the MkVI and a VC 15, along reach hydraulic drag shoveldesigned by Priestman to replacethe dragline on many duties. Othermakes include NCK and Smith.

Until recently the emphasis hasbeen on the preservation of ropeoperated machines, but it is recognised that early hydraulicmachines are becoming historicallysignificant and of course all of ushave fond memories of the machineswe knew in our formative years.

PreservingthepastAlthough mobile cranes have been around for over acentury, cranes as we know them largely date fromthe 1940's. While a few examples from the 40's, 50’sand 60's have been preserved, most are left rotting inyards or worse still have been cut up.

gauge railway up into the quarry onwhich the Bagnall steam locomotive'Sir Tom' can be seen.

The excavators include many modelsby Ruston-Bucyrus, with various front end equipment, includingcrowd-shovels, drag shovels, skimmers, draglines, grabs and liftcrane attachments. Models includea number of 10, 19, 22 and 33-RBs,a 16, 17 and 38-RB, plus the massive 61-RB. Biggest of them allthough is a 110-RB electric miningshovel, in the process of being re-assembled following its movefrom the Castle Cement quarry near Clitheroe.

It is therefore appropriate to havesome machines that younger members grew up with. In additionto the aforementioned VC 15 otherexamples include a PriestmanMustang and Beaver along withtwo Ackerman face shovels. TheBeaver was basically a MkVI Cubwith the cable drums removed andhydraulic bucket hoist and dragfunctions fitted. The mechanicalslew and travel functions remained. This hybrid arrangement was notpopular with operators and subsequently few British attemptsat producing hydraulic excavatorswere successful.

The cranes at Threlkeld are mostlycrane versions of excavators. Anexample of a machine based on anexcavator but designed specificallyas a crane, is the Ruston-Bucyrus25-RBSC, this consists of a 22-RB superstructure mounted on a 30-RB under frame resulting in a useful crane with a 30 tonne lifting capacity.

There are a number of smaller private collections around the country with collectors tending to concentrate on a particular manufacturer. Andrew Beaulah hasa farm near Hull with a substantial

crawler tractor collection. He allowssome Trust members to keep theirexcavators, mostly Priestmans, there and holds working days, inFebruary and July.

Walking draglines are generally tooexpensive to be kept in workingorder for demonstration purposes, however a Bucyrus-Erie 1150Bwalking dragline has been preservedas a static exhibit at St. Aidan'snear Leeds. This 1200 tonnemachine fitted with a 215 ft. boomand a 19 cu yd bucket worked atthe RJB Mining opencast site until1988. After the site was closed and

There does not yet appear to be aspecific crane collection open tovisitors although there are manyinteresting examples around. Mostpreserved railways have one ortwo, from large breakdown cranesdown to small hand cranes, butwhere are the early mobile cranes, and the products of such companiesas Coles, Jones and Ransomes & Rapier etc…?

This 22-RB, recently restored by RichardBragg, is a typical example of a dragline.Their long reach made them ideal for keeping waterways clear amongst many other tasks.

The 200 tonne 110-RB is thebiggest machine at Threlkeld.Donated by Castle Cement it iscurrently being re-assembled.

The narrow gauge quarry railway is an additional attraction at Threlkeld. Here thesteam locomotive 'Sir Tom' is giving a ride tothe catering ladies who ensure that visitorsdo not go hungry on working weekends.
