NOVENA PRAYER Mother of Perpetual Help, we come before your holy picture to be inspired by the example of your life. We recall your faith and trust when you accepted Gods call to be the Mother of His Son. Help us, your children, to accept with joy our own calling in life. When you learned that your cousin Elizabeth was in need you immediately went to offer your help. May we like you, be concerned for others. We think of you Mother at the foot of the Cross. Your heart was crushed to see your Son in agony; but your joy was great when He rose from the dead, victorious over the powers of evil. Mother of Sorrows, help us to accept whatever trials and disappointments come our way and never to loose heart. May we share with you and with your Son the joy of having courageously faced up to all the challenges of life. Amen. MISSION SUNDAY. Ireland has a strong missionary heritage with many countries across the globe having welcomed scores of nuns, brothers and priests who left everything behind to spread the gospel in foreign lands. They often worked with the poorest of the poor, standing beside those who were disadvantaged, fighting for the rights of the dispossessed as well as setting up schools to educate children and hospitals and medical centres to care for the sick. These missionaries who have travelled far afield to spread the good news are the people who come first to mind when we think of mission. They are the ones who answered the call to be witnesses to Christ to the ends of the earthBut if we only think of mission as something that happens in foreign countries, then it becomes a step removed from us. It is something ‘they’ do and I need not concern myself with it. But Pope Francis in The Joy of the Gospel’ calls everyone to take up the role of ‘preachers of the Good News, joyfully bringing Jesus to every street, every town square and every corner of the earth!
