From Father Conner
Congratulations to our new Catholics!
SJoA congratulates Andrea Reed, Andy Pitts, Jaidyn
Duplechain on the occasion of their becoming Catholic! They
received the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First
Holy Communion at the Easter Vigil Mass last Saturday night.
Each of us congratulates you and we welcome you as
parishioners of SJoA!
Congratulations to First Communicants!
We congratulate Mary Jane Vizena, Mali Rodriguez, Nahla
Moreau, Raynnie Abshire who made their first penance this
weekend and will receive First Holy Communion this Sunday.
These are singular times of grace indeed! For which of us can
sufficiently describe the reality of God entering into the soul in
such a profound way? The beauty of such an occurrence borders
on the indescribable. May our love of Jesus, truly, really, and
substantially present in the Most Holy Eucharist never become
cold or routine. Additionally, I take this opportunity to remind
you that a plenary indulgence may be obtained by those who
attend a First Holy Communion Mass when the usual conditions
are fulfilled.
Divine Mercy Info
Today is Divine Mercy Sunday. We have a Divine Mercy Holy
Hour at 6:00 pm. A special plenary indulgence is available to
those who fulfill the usual conditions. Information is available at
the entrances of the church as well as on the parish website:
www.sjoaoberlin.com. We hope you join us for this special time
of mercy and grace.
Confirmation this Tuesday
Please pray for our high school Confirmation Candidates. They
will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this Tuesday, April
25th, at 7:00 pm, at Sacred Heart, in Oakdale. We pray that they
receive this sacrament with intense love, so that it can shape
them into soldiers of Christ to bring the light of their Master into
this dark and desolate world, full of violence and strife, and
infuse the aroma of holiness into it. All are invited to attend the
Confirmation Mass.
Final Exams for CCD Year
Final exams for CCD are this Wednesday (April 26th). Please
make sure your children are present and well prepared for
testing. Completing the final exam is necessary for advancement
to the next grade.
CCD Pre-registration
A note to parents for this Wednesday at CCD: We encourage
you to remain here and wait for your children to finish their
exams. The exams will likely not take the full period of time to
complete and the children are free to leave once the exam has
been completed. Additionally, by remaining on campus, you can
register your children for next year’s CCD program. We will
have a CCD pre-registration for next year’s program this
Wednesday. Costs for next year’s CCD program are: $15.00 for
grades 1-8 and $15.00 for grades 9-11.
CCD Closing Ceremonies Our closing ceremonies will be this Saturday, April 29
th, from
11:00 am until 2:00 pm. We’ll have plenty of good food (BBQ
burgers, chips, sweets, etc.) plus a whole lot of fun (waterslides,
fun jumps, etc.). We hope all children who were enrolled in our
CCD program this year will join us for this time of fun. We’ll
also hand out student awards at the beginning of the closing
ceremonies. An important note about modesty for the CCD
closing ceremonies: short-shorts are not permitted; shirts will
be worn by at all times (in other words, boys won’t remove
shirts for the slides and ladies will keep shirts and shorts on over
their bathing suits). Anyone inappropriately dressed will be
asked to leave.
Brief Background of the Divine Mercy Devotion (From EWTN’s website) From the diary of a young Polish nun, a special devotion began spreading throughout the world in the 1930s. The message is nothing new, but is a reminder of what the Church has always taught through scripture and tradition: that God is merciful and forgiving and that we, too, must show mercy and forgiveness. But in the Divine Mercy devotion, the message takes on a powerful new focus, calling people to a deeper understanding that God’s love is unlimited and available to everyone — especially the greatest sinners.
The message and devotion to Jesus as The Divine Mercy is based on the writings of Saint Faustina Kowalska, an uneducated Polish nun who, in obedience to her spiritual director, wrote a diary of about 600 pages recording the revelations she received about God’s mercy. Even before her death in 1938, the devotion to The Divine Mercy had begun to spread. The message of mercy is that God loves us — all of us — no matter how great our sins. He wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy. It is a message we can call to mind simply by remembering ABC. A — Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him in prayer constantly, repenting of our sins and asking Him to pour His mercy out upon us and upon the whole world. B — Be merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let it flow through us to others. He wants us to extend love and forgiveness to others just as He does to us. C — Completely trust in Jesus. God wants us to know that the graces of His mercy are dependent upon our trust. The more we trust in Jesus, the more we will receive.
