Archbishop’s Annual Appeal --

- Making a Difference

Individuals and families living with

disabilities, particularly developmental

disabilities, often feel at the margins of parish life. They

also typically have additional struggles concerning their

relationship with God, world, church, and school systems.

The Archdiocesan Department of Pastoral Ministry with

Persons with Disabilities works to build structures of

support at the parish level to address this special group.

The department seeks to affirm the Baptism of people

with disabilities, acknowledging their call to participate in

the life and mission of the Church, to the extent that each

person desires and is able. This includes catechesis and

faith formation, the sacramental life of the Church,

evangelization, outreach and pastoral ministry.

Last year, with the help of this department, 112 parishes in

the Archdiocese offered catechesis for individuals with

disabilities. It also promotes faith-based support for

mothers and fathers, Inclusive Family Masses and has

worked directly and indirectly with more than 500

families over the past few years.

Thank you for your support of the Archbishop’s Annual

Appeal, which helps bring to reality the experience of

welcome and affirmation for individuals and families

living with disabilities in the Archdiocese of Newark.

AWARENESS - LISTEN AND RECEIVE

Ask Congress to Protect Your Tax Deduction for

Charitable Giving

The Catholic Bishops of New Jersey are asking

parishioners to help preserve Tax Deductions for

Charitable Giving by contacting their members of

Congress. The tax deduction for charitable contributions is

important for our parishes, Catholic Charities and all non-

profit organizations.

For almost 100 years the federal income tax code

has allowed tax deductions for contributions to charities.

This tax policy has successfully encouraged charitable

giving, especially during times of economic recovery and

when charitable resources are under great stress.

Currently, Congress is considering proposals that

would eliminate, reduce or cap tax deductions for

charitable donations. Any negative action against tax

deductions for charitable giving would significantly hurt

the ability of Catholic Charities and other non-profit

organizations to serve the most vulnerable in our society.

To make it easy to contact members of Congress,

the New Jersey Catholic Conference has established an

automated alert system that is available at:

http://www.capwiz.com/njcathconf/home/.

Please use the alert system on the Catholic

Conference website to ask your Congressional

representatives to preserve the IRS tax deduction for

Charitable Giving. Also please consider joining our

Action E-list so that we can keep you apprised of updates

for this and other important issues.

Word of Life Peace in society is also put at risk by certain threats to

religious liberty: it is a question sometimes of the

marginalization of religion in social life; sometimes of

intolerance or even of violence towards individuals,

symbols of religious identity and religious institutions. It

even happens that believers, and Christians in particular,

are prevented from contributing to the common good by

their educational and charitable institutions. In order

effectively to safeguard the exercise of religious liberty it

is essential to respect the right of conscientious objection.

This “frontier” of liberty touches upon principles of great

importance … rooted in the very dignity of the human

person. They are, as it were, the “[load-]bearing walls” of

any society that wishes to be truly free and democratic.” ~Pope Benedict XVI, Address to the Diplomatic Corps, January 7, 2013
