Blessing of Candles
God of night and of
day,
we praise you for the
brightness of our sun,
for the softer light of
the moon
and the splendor of the
stars,
for the fires of earth
that bring us light and warmth
even as they imperil all who use them.
By the great and small lights we mark our days and
seasons,
we brighten the night and bring warmth to our winter,
and in these lights we see light:
Jesus, whose light we receive in Baptism,
whose light we carry by day and by night.
In the beauty of these candles,
keep us in quiet and in peace,
keep us safe and turn our hearts to you
that we may ourselves be light for our world.
All praise be yours through Christ,
the light of the nations,
the glory of Israel,
forever and ever. Amen.
—Catholic Household Blessings & Prayers
Let us open our eyes to the light that comes from God,
and our ears to the voice from heaven that every day
calls out this charge: If you hear his voice today, do
not harden your hearts (Ps 95:8).

SIX STEPS TO PRAYER by St. Francis de Sales
St. Francis de Sales, one of the great spiritual directors
among the saints, offers six steps to prayer that can allow
you to enter more deeply into meditation and conversation
with the Lord:
1. Place yourself in the presence of God. Remember
that God is near you. Take a moment to invite him into
your time of prayer. Meet him as if you were meeting a
friend.
2. Ask God for his assistance. Ask that he would help in
your meditation. Pray that God uses this time to draw you
closer to him.
3. Read over a passage of Scripture or some other
spiritual work. In this case (a book of Pope Francis
quotes), your spiritual reading will be the words of Pope
Francis, but also consider supplementing this with
Scripture, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, or other
spiritual readings.
4. Take some time to reflect and think over what you
have read. Your goal is not necessarily to learn
something but to enter more deeply into a relationship with
Jesus and to understand yourself and God more
intimately. Listen to what God is trying to tell you.
5. Have a conversation with God about your reflections
and thoughts. In this step, you want to ask
yourself: What stood out to you in your spiritual
reading? What is God trying to tell you through what you
just read? What feelings arise in your heart? Talk to God
about these things.
6. Conclude your time in prayer. In your conclusion, St.
Francis recommends thanking God for your time in prayer,
making petitions for yourself and others, and developing a
practical resolution. Take what insights you have gained
and apply them to your life in a practical way. For
example, do you need to be more faithful to prayer? Do
you need to forgive someone?
As St. Francis de Sales and many other spiritual writers
make clear, there is no perfect method or process for
prayer, which is ultimately the work of the Holy Spirit.

We will have the Saint Blaise
Blessing at all the Masses this
weekend, Saturday, January 30,
2021, and Sunday, January 31,
2021, at St. Joseph and St. Anne
Parishes.
Because of COVID, the Office of
Sacred Worship has instructed Priests and
Deacons to give the prayer of blessing, without
candles, as the final blessing for the Mass.
St. Blaise Bishop and Martyr
As the bishop of Sebastea in Armenia, he died as a
martyr during a wave of persecution under the
emperor Diocletian. His feast is marked by one of the
most popular Catholic devotions: the blessing of
throats with lighted tapers. This practice combines
features of two stories about the saint’s life: one in
which he healed a boy with a fishbone stuck in his
throat, and another in which a woman, visiting him in
prison before his death, brought lighted candles to
brighten the gloom of his cell.
St. Blaise is also remembered for his kindness to
animals. For some time he escaped persecution by
hiding in a cave which he shared with a number of
wild creatures. After he had healed them of all their
ailments they gladly accepted his blessing and offered
him company and protection. Even after his arrest,
his solicitude for animals continued.
“Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and
martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of
the throat and from every other illness.”
