CELEBRATING 500 YEARS OF CHRISTIANITY

IN THE PHILIPPINES

On March 16, 1521, the explorer Ferdinand Magellan of Spain landed on the Visayas Islands, planted the

Cross, and several days later on March 31, 1521, offered the first Mass on the island of Limasawa, Leyte.

This year, Filipino Catholics throughout the world are celebrating the Quincentennial Commemoration of

Christianity in the Philippines. “Gifted to Give” is the theme chosen to mark this year-long commemoration.

The theme is an apt reminder of how the Filipino people truly embraced and nurtured the Catholic faith we

have been gifted and now are tasked to share it with others. Our gift of faith is our gift to the world.

“By God’s mysterious design, the gift of faith we have received is now being shared by the millions of

Christian Filipino migrants in different parts of the world,” as His Eminence Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle

remarked in a message to Pope Francis this year. The celebration of 500 years of Christianity by Filipinos in

the 7,641 islands, and the more than ten million living in almost one hundred countries in the world, is an

affirmation that faith is deeply woven in the hearts, the culture, and the identity of Filipino Christians, who

have continuously chosen to remain faithful to the Catholic Church.

Pope Francis, in his homily in Rome to celebrate the occasion, encouraged the Filipino people “to persevere

in the work of evangelization “ and said, “The Christian proclamation that you have received needs constantly

to be brought to others.” Indeed, he said, “The Gospel message of God’s closeness cries out to be expressed

in love for our brothers and sisters.”

At this Holy Mass, we are invited to join Filipino Catholics to pray in thanksgiving for the gift of the Catholic

faith and recommit to courageously go out on a mission to bring God's love wherever they are.

SAINT LORENZO RUIZ DE MANILA

“Through [the] work of evangelization and conversion, Jesus Christ became a Filipino. He entered the hearts

of your forefathers. He shared the hopes, the sufferings, and all the dramatic events of your nation’s history.

His grace transformed lives. His saving message shaped your culture. And he did not hesitate to call a humble

son of Binondo of Manila, to become one with him in the great mystery of his saving passion and death, not

in his own land, but far away in Japan, as a seed transported to another field, at the beginning of another

heroic page in the history of evangelization in Asia.

Saint Lorenzo Ruiz calls Philippine Catholics of today to uphold and strengthen their nation’s baptismal

consecration. His example urges you to meet the challenges of the present with the same strength of character

and trust in God with which he faced the supreme test of love. In a special way, Saint Lorenzo Ruiz calls

Philippine families to grow in dignity, harmony and responsibility as the ‘domestic Church,’ where each one

learns to be at the service of all, witnessing to the sanctity of human life at every stage and in every condition.”

Address of His Holiness John Paul II to the Philippine pilgrims attending the canonization of St. Lorenzo

Ruiz and the other Philippine Martyrs (Sunday, October 18, 1987)

SAN LORENZO RUIZ

Koro:

Sa ‘yo, San Lorenzo martir

Ang bayan ay umaawit

Ng ‘sang magandang papuri

Na abot sa langit.

Kami ay iyong turuang

Ang buhay ay ilaan

Sa lubos at ganap na pagtataya

Sa Diyos at inang bayan.

Yamang kami sa ‘yo’y di maiba,

Kalahi nami’t kabalat.

Iisang bansa ating pinagmulan,

¡Perlas ng silangan!

Tulungan mo’t akayin mo

Kami sa tunay na kabanalan.

(Koro)

Sa’yo, bayani’t kawal ni Hesus

Atas niya’y natupad.

Sana kami laging maging tapat

H’wag nang masindak

Sa anumang kaharasan;

Ang kamatayan man ay maharap.

(Koro)

LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING (Read in English) 2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14

It also happened that seven brothers with their mother were arrested and tortured with

whips and scourges by the king, to force them to eat pork in violation of God's law. One

of the brothers, speaking for the others, said: "What do you expect to achieve by

questioning us? We are ready to die rather than transgress the laws of our ancestors."

At the point of death he said: "You accursed fiend, you are depriving us of this present

life, but the King of the world will raise us up to live again forever. It is for his laws

that we are dying." After him the third suffered their cruel sport. He put out his tongue

at once when told to do so, and bravely held out his hands, as he spoke these noble

words: "It was from Heaven that I received these; for the sake of his laws I disdain them;

from him I hope to receive them again."

Page 7: MASS TO COMMEMORATE THE 500 YEARS OF CHRISTIANITY IN …

Even the king and his attendants marveled at the young man's courage, because he

regarded his sufferings as nothing. After he had died, they tortured and maltreated the

fourth brother in the same way. When he was near death, he said, "It is my choice to

die at the hands of men with the God-given hope of being restored to l ife by him; but

for you, there will be no resurrection to life."

The Word of the Lord. R. / Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 31: 3-4, 6, 7, 8, 17, 21

SECOND READING (Read in Tagalog) 1 Peter 3:14-17

But even if you should suffer because of righteousness, blessed are you. Do not be afraid or terrified

with fear of them, but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give an explanation

to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, but do it with gentleness and reverence, keeping

your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who defame your good conduct in

Christ may themselves be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that be the will

of God, than for doing evil.

The Word of the Lord. R. / Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA

GOSPEL John 15:18-21

Jesus said to all,

“If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow

me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save

it. What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself? Whoever is

ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes in his glory

and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.”

The Gospel of the Lord. R. / Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

GUIDELINES FOR THE RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION For Catholics As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy

Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be

properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and

normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive

the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason

where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the

obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as

possible (canon 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all.

For our fellow Christians

We welcome our fellow Christians to this celebration of the Eucharist as our brothers and sisters.

We pray that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us

closer to one another and begin to dispel the sad divisions which separate us. We pray that these

will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ’s prayer for us “that they may all be one”

(Jn 17:21).

Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the

oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully

united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion. Eucharistic sharing in exceptional

circumstances by other Christians requires permission according to the directives of the diocesan

bishop and the provisions of canon law (canon 844 § 4). Members of the Orthodox Churches, the

Assyrian Church of the East, and the Polish National Catholic Church are urged to respect the

discipline of their own Churches. According to Roman Catholic discipline, the Code of Canon

Law does not object to the reception of communion by Christians of these Churches (canon 844

§ 3).

For those not receiving Holy Communion

All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in their hearts a prayerful

desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another.

For non-Christians We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we

cannot admit them to Holy Communion, we ask them to offer their prayers for the peace and the

unity of the human family.
